Futurama Episode Guide

'Futurama Season 1' premiered on March 28th 1999 with 'Space Pilot 3000' - the only episode Matt Groening himself (in cooperation with David X. Cohen) wrote. While the core characters are introduced in that episode, Amy, Hermes and Dr. Zoidberg had to wait for the second one. The 9th and last episode of Season 1 - 'Hell is other robots' - was aired May 18th 1999 and continued the Simpsons tradition to include some musical part now and then.

'Futurama Season 2' aired from September 26th 1999 to May 21st 2000. With 20 episodes, it was the longest season the show got to see. While the first season mostly aired on Tuesdays, Season 2 jumped to Sundays but for a few. The Sunday timeslot held Futurama to being pre-empted throughout the autumn/winter sports seasons. Still, many fans currently see this season as the best. The Season Finale 'Anthology of Interest 1' had a new format of 3 mini stories which was meant to become Futurama's Treehouse equivalent.

'Futurama Season 3' got a late start on November 5th in order to save it from future pre-emption, to no avail. The next 3 months saw no more than 4 episodes. While this season had definite highlights, it gave many fans a strange after-taste due to some less popular episodes. Storywise, Fry's past and the role of the Nibblonians were shed some light upon. Much to the dismay of the fans, FOX decided not to leave it with starting the season late, but to also end it early on May 13th 2001 without airing 'Anthology of Interest 2'.

'Futurama Season 4' had no more luck in respect to being started late, shortened and pre-empted time after time due to its early Sunday time slot. No sooner than December 9th 2001 did this season start. Notable events were the late hour airing of 'Tale of two Santas' which was skipped in season 2 due to excess violence and then the sad February decision by FOX to not order any new episode for the next year as they already had dozens of episodes in the can. A big secret of the show was lifted in the episode 'Leela's Homeworld'.

'Futurama Season 5' is the last season that aired on FOX. Yet again, it started late into the year on November 10th 2002 -- this time mostly because FOX only had 16 episodes left to air. All the episodes were originally produced for either season 3 or 4. The premiere episode 'Crimes of the Hot' featured ex-vice president Al Gore voicing himself on his crusade to fight global warming. As Futurama was dropped from the February and May sweeps the last 8 episodes were aired during the summer postseason time.

All 72 episodes were originally created in 4 production runs called 1ACV to 4ACV. The ACV is a code assigned to Futurama by FOX and has no further meaning. FOX however did not air the episodes in their original order, nor did it stick to the intended schedule line. As both the DVDs and Cartoon Network do honor the production runs, you can also access our Futurama Episode Guide divided into these 4 production runs:
Futurama Episode Guide: 1ACV - 13 episodes (released on DVD)
Futurama Episode Guide: 2ACV - 19 episodes (released on DVD)
Futurama Episode Guide: 3ACV - 22 episodes (released on DVD)
Futurama Episode Guide: 4ACV - 18 episodes (released on DVD)
