The Futurama on Comedy Central Cuts Guide The original 72 episodes Created by Matt Garvey (garvey at snpp dot com) for use on CGEF 18 Jun 2008 From January 2003 to December 2007, Cartoon Network aired Futurama as part of its Adult Swim block, almost entirely uncut. Since January 2008, having won the contract, Comedy Central has been showing it instead. It's actually mostly intact, but I took it upon myself to see what might have changed. A brief introduction to the guide: This list is presented in production order, not airing order, although for a while Comedy Central's broadcasts were in airing order themselves. I figure this is the order most viewers are familiar with (if any), and it's easier to search through. The episodes as shown on Comedy Central are generally not cut (in the body) but are slightly time-compressed to fit their time slot (about 21:30). I've adapted the format of the Simpsons syndication cuts guide (at snpp.com) to take up a little less space, with changes and other remarks on the right-hand side. Each part of an episode is listed with its running time on CC out of the full running time, with the difference displayed in parentheses. The major problem of Comedy Central's format is the credits. Comedy Central, like most cable channels, hates credits, and seems to do everything possible not to show them in their original form. For some reason, Futurama has gotten a worse treatment than their usual (text credits* on the side while promos run); almost any time it is followed by another episode of Futurama, or South Park, or Li'l Bush, a "scrap of paper" view at the bottom left of the screen overlaps the start of the next show, with tiny text credits flashing by in it. This has the unfortunate side effect of obscuring most of the opening taglines when another episode of Futurama is up next (as well as anything else important down there, such as the lines of text during South Park's "4th Grade" opening titles). (*This is my name for credits that are displayed in various forms, using a basic text format, without being tied to a particular font or timing or pagination. The distinction is computer text vs. shrinking a video.) For the first few weeks, Comedy Central experimented with different levels of transparency to the black background of the credits, making stuff behind it somewhat legible, but now they seem to have settled on opaque. Also rocky at the start was the timing of credits, as often they would come in late (skipping the cast, for example) or wrap up early (in particular with later South Park episodes, which have a commercial right after the opening). Furthermore, the contents of the credits were not always correct (usually the wrong production code was the only error I could spot). I have not made a detailed study of every line of the credits, though. Usually only when the show is followed by something else, such as standup, the credits are in typical side-text design, and even then, there are often errors in production code (despite guest stars and such being correct). Most of the time, the very last note of the credits music can be heard at the end of this; if I ever catch such a broadcast of an episode with special credits, I'll see if the end of *that* music can be heard instead. Additionally, it seems that season "5" episodes, when using the side credits, have a 20th Century Fox logo after 30th (but use 30th only on the scrap-of-paper credits). Interestingly, on CN, it was generally the other way around: the first four aired seasons had 30th and 20th, but the last had 30th only, possibly because CN didn't get them until November 2003. Overall, though, don't expect to see or hear any extra content from the credits. It sucks, I know. I've noted episodes where that's cut, but not lengthy descriptions. (Consult or buy the DVDs!) I've taken the liberty of marking each credits section as 0 out of 36 seconds. Also of particular note: the logos for Curiosity Company, which vary in both video and audio from episode to episode, are all the same still image on Comedy Central. Every episode on Comedy Central is rated TV-14, though individual episode ratings varied originally on Fox (many some form of TV-PG). I might also note that the closed captioning image at the top right slightly gets in the way of the "tasty human burgers" sign in the main title when there's no cold opening, but it disappears in time to be read partway through. Although I refer to it a few times, I'm not really including records of TBS, which occasionally broadcast the show from 2003 onward. I seem to recall that text credits were used there, too, but that's about all I know, and they're not regular enough to bother with. I've used the DVDs to do the comparisons and get the original timings, as I don't have most of the Fox airings on tape. With a few exceptions, these reflect how the show originally looked anyway. In addition, the chapter breaks help illustrate where act breaks are, with (production) seasons 1, 2, and 4 being perfectly standard in this respect, while season 3 is all over the place (and in one case--3ACV05--doesn't mark a certain act break at all). Almost all episodes are compressed uniformly; since most are the same basic length, compression of about one second per minute is used. (Two episodes are shorter and use different methods.) My timings are accurate within a second or so; you might notice that sometimes, for example, one 7-minute act is shortened by 6 seconds and then a 6-minute act is shortened by 7, but I'm not tidying up all the numbers just for that. A few episodes trim some long, generally silent and still shots, ruining the dramatic pause, and I've noted them. (I wonder if there's some degree of automation to this process that makes such fraction-of-a-second trims. I've noticed the same sort of thing on syndicated episodes of Family Guy.) You might notice that short pieces (the main title and most cold opens) are listed with more precision; this is to illustrate that all are still compressed, even when the difference is less than a second. I will admit that there's a certain mathematical or scientific fallacy going on when I keep that level of precision in the episode totals, but the idea is just to give you an idea of the change. A few notes about the difference between Cartoon Network and Comedy Central airings: CC does have a few advantages. For the most part it preserves the original break placement; Adult Swim's two-act format meant that many episodes were split in the second act, and the other breaks were eliminated, without even a short gap between them (leading to, for example, a ruined meta-joke in 1ACV05). Also, CC has no problem with the "Zombie Jesus" lines. If you have any questions, corrections, additional information, etc., please let me know. Summary of major changed/missing content, etc.: 1ACV01: Still "Radio City Mutant Hall" 1ACV03: Missing opening tagline ("As Seen on TV") (2ACV12: "Sweet Zombie Jesus" intact) (2ACV13: "Holy Zombie Jesus" intact) Special credits: (Not that the usual theme is unworthy, but most non-casual viewers know it.) 1ACV02 1ACV08 1ACV09 2ACV04 2ACV14 4ACV04 4ACV05 (that's what I say) 4ACV06 4ACV11 4ACV16 4ACV17 ==[ 1ACV01 ]=========================================== Space Pilot 3000 === 21:26 / 22:23.5 COLD 3:01 / 3:04 (0:03) INTRO 0:28 / 28.5 (.5) ACT I 5:30 / 5:34 (0:04) The man before Fry originally asked the tube to take him to "JFK Jr. Airport"; this is how the line appeared on the first two network airings (3/28/99 and 6/15/99). However, on 7/16/99, JFK Jr. died--in a plane crash yet--and for the episode's third airing on Fox (8/8/99), the destination was changed to "Radio City Mutant Hall." (According to Haynes Lee, it was not changed on Global in Canada.) The replacement line has been used everywhere: DVD, CN, and CC. (Those with the DVD can find the original line in the animatic, though.) No editorializing from me, though, just all the details I know.
