Talk about Futurama Direct to DVD

Good news, everyone?

Over the last week, several sources from within the animation business have indicated to us that there is renewed talk at FOX about bringing fresh Futurama content directly to DVD. We corroborated this with other sources close to the show before publishing the information.

The talk is of course still in a preliminary stage. Options reported to us include one or more Futurama movies in case of a go-ahead.

Even though Futurama is not sure to return and the likelihood of its return is currently unknown, this is the first time in the past few years that we have heard of Futurama being discussed at the upper levels of FOX. They'll likely have a good look at the sales of the upcoming Futurama Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection.

As soon as we get more information on the Direct to DVD story, we'll let you know right here.

The dvd looks like a great idea for birthday presents. I'm buying in bulk :).

The really nice thing about this rumour is the reliable sources- still, early days...

Any chance of naming the sources?

Re writing staff: Bringing back the writing staff won't be a big problem really. You don't really need all the writers back from Futurama for a movie.

Re sources: I can't give out names at the moment really. But we've been pretty careful with theis news item and didn't publish on the first sight of a rumour. Think we've also shown to be trustable in the past on those things.

Yeah new Futurama episodes would be great!
I think this is a great chance to show FOX that they still could make money with futurama so that they perhaps think about renew futurama. that would be really fantastic.

Like always: sorry for my bad english :-)

You guys should post addresses to the Fox Execs and anyone else who has some pull with this so letters can be written to them supporting new episodes or a movie.

This flimsy hope is sadly the best Futurama related news we've had since before February 2002. Nevertheless, I'll take it.

Commencing blind hope...

I am glad to hear this great news!!! I must buy more copys of DVDs.

I am having my fingers crossed.

this statement I'm about to make is purely a guess, and not an actual fact or anything.
But, it would make sense that maybe they'll air 4 episodes on cartoon network, that all link together. kind of how they did with that star wars animated thing.
then just release it as an uncut movie.
seems possible, at least. considering ive never really heard of a tv show that just has a straight to video movie aside from scooby doo in the last 10 years.

I was thinking that since family guy came back the ratings must be good for fox to start thinking about futurama again. But the little appearance by bender on the simpsons a few weeks back changes that since I know it takes a while to make a simpsons episode..
Although I could be wrong on the appearance by bender, it could have just been something by matt to show that he still has hope for a return of futurama...
None the less I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of monster robot maniac fun collection.

if its true (which im praying it is) im looking for my check book now lol

This sounds so odd-- Futurama is an expensive show to produce, why wouldn't FOX air it?

Perhaps they could air it in a summer season, or some other sort of mid-season replacement. There are plenty of times when there is nothing but crap on FOX.

It just seems really odd that FOX would spend all that money and not show it on TV, especially when having it on TV is probably the best way to boost DVD sales.

Still, though, I hope it's true either way.

#25 by Officer1BDI
Oh man, please let it be true.... As long as we get the main voice actors back I will be a happy, happy Futurama fan. Z8D

I'd actually prefer a movie (or three) over a set of new episodes, because I think this is one of the few shows that has enough depth to create a successful feature-length DVD, and I'd love to see what the writers would come up with. Plus, a movie would be long enough to tie up a number of loose ends while throwing new twists our way.

Well, regardless, I'm still buying Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection.

#26 by Endocrom
I'd buy that for a dollar... well, I'd spend much more than a DOLLAR. (within reason)

I am posting this from the future and hoping that it doesn't fall on deaf ears. We now know that the continuation of Futurama is the only thing that would have prevented the downfall of our society in 2078, which will begin with an invasion from the planet Spatulon 5. A series of financial crises will wreak havoc on the planet, followed by a shortage of brief underpants. Only by the continuence of Futurama can civillization as we know it be saved. Please alert the folks at FOX that new content MUST be produced to save our fair planet. Thank you.

I prefer a movie (or however many) over a new series too. It just seemed that in the 4th season it was starting to make its downfall and I hate to say this guys but if I were from Fox I woulda cancelled it too.
Look how much ppl hate the simpsons now because of its continuation. Thank god it was cancelled.

Anyway, this is probably going to get flamed and all but I hope there are others who can see where Im coming from.

A movie would be the best way for Futurama to tie up its loose ends.
5-19-2005

#30 by idontgiveoutmyname
yah, I think we see where you come from, but even after The Simpsons first started going down hill it still managed to give us some gold. 4 seasons to cancel Futurama was way too early, since they have so much more to explore in the Futurama universe compared to the simpsons universe, and the Simpsons managed beyond 8 seasons before it started downhill.

If they don't do this, then they can bite my shiny metal ass! Let's hope they bring back futurama, and straight to DVD is fine by me, it means no commercials.

Well If Family guy came back because of DVD sales....then bring back futurama and cancel King of the Hill and AMerican DAD.

It's not working out and too much Seth McFarlane is a bad thing.

#39 by icweiner
I hope this is true. It better be. I'm going to buy maybe at least 5 of the Robot DVDs.

As much as Fox is touting its new animated Sunday night lineup, you'd think they'd be more than willing to fit Futurama in there. They're listing "Animation Encores" for the coming Fall and Spring lineups - who knows what that means - and a probably crappy non-animated show called "The War at Home" which is going to try to be a MitM ripoff with slightly older kids. My recommendation: Ditch TWaH after the 13 episode order runs out, and replace it with Futurama, right after The Simpsons!
