The best pilot I have ever seen. They filled it with a ton of jokes and added the main characters without feeling forced.

The beginning of one of the best shows on television

Absolutely brilliant episode setting the standard for future episodes to beat. I love the fact that they did'nt introduce the whole crew in the first episode but saved Hermes, Amy & Dr Zoidberg untill "Space Pilot". This gave room for the other characters to breath.

Where it all began. Not the funniest of episodes but contains a subtle wit which set the mold for all following episodes.
Bender is the star here as his evil but loveable character is introduced.

Not a laugh-out-loud episode like those we've seen so many times in the "Simpsons" series... but a GENUINELY smart, entertaining & funny beginning to a great series.

Everything from the opening video game, to the aforementioned suicide booth, to Bender shitting bricks made for an instant classic. Love it.

A great start to a fantastic cartoon.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Not the best Futurama episode ever, but it did a fantastic job of introducing us to the main characters, the 31 century and the humor of the show, without feeling crammed or forced. Must pilots have a tendency to want to do to much, to fast. "Space Pilot 3000" took the smart way, IMO, introduce Fry, and then quickly get him to NNY. Introduce Leela and Bender, as part of a not too complicated plot. And then concentrate on theese three. Farnsworth was thrown in at the dying minutes. They established the basics of the 3 main characters, and left it at that.

The little tidbits we saw of NNY, was also well written. The headmuseum, the tubes, the peace officers etc., all used for quick laughs, and introductions, without any drawnout explanations. Good work.

I liked the Fry I saw in this episode a lot better than the way he is portrayed in some latter eps, and I first saw the pilot about halway through season 2. He is a genuine guy, with emotions and believable reactions. His horror at being labelled a delivery boy, his escape, the friendship with Bender, his final realisation that he has no where to run, and everything he ever knew or cared for is gone, just makes him that more likeable. great writing.

Leela, well I liked her from the start. Welldrawn, intelligent, independent, resourceful and with a kind heart. Her discovery that she was unhappy with her job, was also good. And she is one goodlooking drawing, I'll say that.

Bender, great character. It isn't often you see a robot drink, steal, cheat etc. Nice twist. And his discovery that he could develop beyond his programming, although standard robot-fare, was good too. Although he did get help from a lightbulb.

The heads in jars, great idea. Good thing they didn't overuse it, to introduce celebrities in every episode (like another unnamed FOX-cartoon).

Great episode, not the best, but great. Rating, well do I even have to say it.

WOW! This is one great tv pilot episode.
Beating "The Simpsons" pilot by miles,
doing the same with Malcolm in The middle,
this is classic TV.
The suicide booth scene is excellent (perhaps one
of the best scenes ever on TV,and, quite frankly this
episode is fantastic!

Genuinely hilarious. Starts more like the beginning to a huge scaling movie, and leaves various threads and hints of future series around the place. Exactly how the year 3000 could feasibly be. Nice jokes, one or two laugh out loud - certainly more so than the Simpsons pilot episode.
In hindsight, as Futurama has now been cancelled - the episode really couldn't be improved. Stunning stuff from one of the 20th Century's most famous cartoonists.

There's nothing to say really. The pilot to the best American animation series ever. What more can be said? The Simpsons simply are no match, as they turned sarcastic criticism into mere "humour". Futurama's concept, drawings, writing are superior in all aspects; and I'd much rather see Futurama's smart, funny characters to The Simpson's stagnated, dumb and alienating characters. All hail Futurama!

I definintely thought this was a great opener episode. It was well planned out and everything. I also liked how it wasn't something stupid like Fry went into a time machine and went to the future. I thought it was a bit weird seeing Nibler's shadow before Fry fell into the freezing chamber, but it was cool. I give it 5 points.

Personally, I loved it from beginning to end - the whole sequence with the suicide booth was great, and the amount of small gags and little things (Leela's officer code was 1BDI - One Beady Eye).

This episode was brilliant, i never realised that joke with Leela's number though!

Favourite quotes:
Bender:"Bite my shiney metal ass!"

Fry:"My god, a million years!"

Robot cop:"Damm"

Farnsworth:"But i am already in my pijamas..."

Hell, yes this is classic stuff! The world being destroyed, then built up in some kind of Medieval Style just to be destroyed again is great. Fry's trip through the city is as great and Leela's problem with depth-perception is plain great. It has a very stupid ending, just having escaped earth and police to come back shortly after... But most of all I adore the scenes with the self-closing doors or the thing with the lightsabres, that are simply some truncheons... A future where everything seems to be so 'High-Tech' and great, but it's just as stupid as it is in today's time... A great beginning!

Absolutely genius!I didn't get the Leela joke (1BDI)...untill now :p
Some say the ending was crap...i dont think so, the whole escape from ebing a delivery boy, to shouting "WOOHOOO, IM A DELIVERY BOY" in the end was great!

Much better than many pilots that just cram you with the whole context at once.
(Wham: here's what the show's about... what? what's a... plot- line...?)

Some of the timing's a bit off, i.e.
When they've just got to the PE building and there's a knock on the door. Cuts to outside. Long pause. Nixon says, 'get those hippy bums' Made it seem like some kid's home movie.

All in all got great jokes and one liners. Favorites enclosed:

'Heh heh, can we have some money?'
'Oh my, no'

'You're full of crap Fry!'
*zap with lightbulb*
'You make a concise argument Fry!'

And for classic Sci-fi fans, that parody of the original 'Time machine' film when Fry's in the tube was perfect.

5. More to say? Shouldn't think so.

I had taped this when it first came on, but havent' been able to find which tape I have it on amongst the many Simpsons' tapes.

What a classic, flawless introductory episode for the series. Fry is so funny, as is Leela. I also forgot that they somehow jammed the whole intro into the segment before the opening credits...lovely.

I just saw this episode on Adult Swim. I haven't seen it in about 2 years and I forgot how funny it is. The graphics were wonderful, the "camera" angles were good, and there were lots of funny jokes. The timing of the jokes and pacing is almost perfect. The most important things were introduced (main characters, New New York, transport tubes) and the episode didn't feel cluttered. Great episode and pilot!

Watching this episode back after three years, the voices haven't quite settled in here, but my opinion has been tainted by time. When I first saw it, it had me in stitches, just like every episode since, and I was amazed to hear the voice of the genious Billy West, especially because of the cruel jibes that The Simpsons gave to Ren & Stimpy over the years.
I agree that it was a good idea not to introduce all the characters in the first episode, but looking back there is a huge void left without the side-splitting Dr. Zoidberg (Greatest character ever!).

A decent opening episode. not great, but pretty good. Bender steals the show. The middle was a bit boring -- the scene with Leela chasing Bender and Fry, especially in the head museum just wasn't all that funny. The passage of time sequence at the beginning was great -- it was almost creepy. Overall, a good start.

I dig this episode mostly because its the beginning. I think Frys introduction to the rest of the characters couldve been spread over a few episodes. Its alot to take in in one episode, but Ill never ever loose the image of Fry sitting in that chair, right before his fate is sealed: "Here's to another lousy millenium." How wrong he was.

The main characters are introduced to us and to eachother(in a very good way). The first episode has very clever jokes, based on quick laughs, for example, bender and fry in a suicide booth. Funny as hell.

This is a fantastic start to a series that constantly performed above my original expectations, and focused on 'continuity' and *gasp* character development.

This first episode takes things slow, doesn't overwork itself, and let's the audience discover on their own the rich characters and story.

The jokes are 'smart', 'fast' amd other words that scare people away these days. Despite the fact

This is a great episode to start off a superb show.

A lot of people were saying they were dissapointed in it not having certain people like Amy or Zoidberg. In my opinion this was a smart move. Most pilot throw all kinds of people at you at first and it throws you away from who the story is about. Having just Fry, Leela and Bender with a small part from the professor was the right way to go. Saving the smaller characters such as Amy, Hermes, and Zoidberg for the second show allowed us to get to know the four main ones.

Absolutely fabulous episode. It begins Futurama in a way that all shows should, explaining how everyone got there. Many shows will just start it off with the characters having another normal day, but Futurama started off great, and (sadly) ended great too. Episodes like "Anthology of Interest I" and "The Why of Fry" explain Fry's being in the Future a bit more. There is the fact that if fry didn't go to the future, the world would have been sucked through the space time continuem, and there's also the fact that Nibbler sent Fry up to be there and go to the future (to save the day). This is a grand episode.

Big fan of the site and series, first time poster. Picked up both seasons on dvd so I thought Id rate them as i watch. :)
What more can be said about this episode at almost 160 reviews. Great introduction to the characters. Interesting to see after these years the voice of bender not fully developed as a character yet, still pretty gravely, but picks up after the first few eps. This ep starts an almost linear story of the episodes that succeed it, with methodical jokes and character development, even after 20 min, while still leaving a smile on your face.

- Before Fry enters the "travel-tube" it went up and sideways not straight up as we see later in the next scene. {dh}

(actually, it never showed the "travel-tube" that goes straight up in the first scene because it is cut off by the screen, and in the second scene, if you look closely, you will see the tube that goes horizontally, connected to the tube going straight up.)

Perhaps I was just spoiled with the later seasons of Futurama (I saw the pilot way after), but this episode didn't seem that special to me.

First, the positives: they introduced Fry and got him to the future right away. Flowed well. The surroundings were introduced beautifully, with every other scene or so letting the audience further into the changes of the future.

The cons:
The voice acting. Yeah yeah, I know the characters' voices in pilots are usually far more reserved than in later episodes, but some of the dramatic lines (Leela speaking to Fry about quitting her job comes to mind) seemed far too sappy. Also, the moments that should have been more excited, i.e. the 'running away' scenes, felt boring. Most of them lacked any music at all, leaving behind almost all tension. Yeah, I might be nitpicking after viewing most of the later episodes of Futurama, but the production in this pilot is lacking.

So, this episode is merely average by Futurama standards, and sadly, had I seen this before the later episodes, I may have been turned off from the series altogher.

I REEEEAAALLLYYYYY love this episode! It's so funny and it just makes you want to keep watching. The heads were funny. Fry: "Spock! Do the thing!" Even though the sound wasn't that great (and I respect that because it's the pilot) it has got to be one of the best episodes ever made! I liked it so much I taped it from TV, recorded the whole thing on a cassete (you know those tiny things they had before CD's, but after records and all that fun stuff you listened to back in the 60's 70's sorry I'm just trying to make myself clear) and I brought it on my class trip! I feel so nerdy right now. hehe Did you notice the first thing Bender has to say is "Bite my shiney metal ass!" Wonderful! This must be why it's his trademark frase. AND I CAN'T FORGET THE SUICIDE BOOTH! That was the best! "You are now dead! Thank you for using STOP AND DROP America's favorite suicide booth since 2008!" Very funny. Am I forgeting anything? I like the beginging where time passes and you see all the years go by really fast and all the buildings get shot by aliens and rebuilt to look almost like old buildings from greece or something and get shot down again and get rebuilt to look like the New New York buildings. And the tunnels you travel through to get from place to place. Oh heck! I love everything in this episode. And nobody's going to read this since I'm the last entry so far. Well duh! *slaps head* I just want to say it's a fantastic episode! HUZZAH!!

A brilliant start to the show, a classic debut. I remember watching this for the first time back in 1999 and having high expectations for the show ('tis Matt Groening after all), and i thought "Hmm futurama is a little weird, but i like it" then my obsession with futurama grew...now i love this pilot episode. Funny and a great way to introduce the show, the main characters and the future and such.

Very good pilot. It lays out the idea for the show very well, but it lacks jokes. The characters are wonderfully drawn for being the first episode. It wasn't as good as some pilots though, like Frasier's. Frasier's layed out the plot and was filled with great jokes. Frasier'd get a 5, I'm giving this a close 4.

A decent episode. It didn't get too crazy or funny...just playing it "safe", what it being the pilot and all. Dissapointing due to complete lack of character development. Is the fact that Fry dislikes his job and has no girlfriend supposed to act as sufficent reason from him to awaken in the future withough feeling any sadness regarding his lost loved ones that he has left behind?
The same goes for Leela the viewer gets no real inside to her life and therefore we cannot understand fully the reason for her intense dislike of her job.
And Bender's (unexplained) anti-social behavior would mean that Fry would never befriend him especially given that he is a robot which would take some getting used to though this is not addressed.
The "Fugitive" storyline was mildly entertaining and littered with a subsequent amount of jokes but it was nothing spectacular.
No I'm just kiddin' it was pretty good!

This is great episode to start! One intriguing fact is the secrets.1:When Fry falls in you see a Nibbloanian shadow, which people started to realize in Love's Labour Lost In Space. It's quite hard to keep the big secret.2:While in crynogenic state the cilvilisation is destroyed twice. However the building does'nt get lower. My theory is the Nibbloanians created a rising hill under the building.

I also like the alien codes.Especcialy Venusians Go Home. Also,my sister claims to have seen Leela's farther in the episode.I'd make it a 102/101.

Best pilot to a series ever. i loved how they introduced the characters especially bender the lovable rascal. I saw it the first time living in my home town of houston tx and i fell in love with it so fast considering that the simpsons has lost its potential with the new seasons. frankly the simpsons now sucks metal ass but the older simpsons was much more enjoyable such as homer goes to college, deep space homer, homer the clown, homer thinks bart is gay etc. i hope they rethink the process if they come out with new futurama episodes. i would hate to see futurama suffer the same fate as the simpsons did.

Brilliant pilot episode. It's good they didn't try to introduce all the characters in the first episode, as i think that would ruin it. In the commentary, Matt Groening says 'some' secrets are started in this episode, which means there is another secret that should have been revealed, apart from the Nibbler and Leela is a mutant ones. May be revealed in movie.

The pilot is a little low on plot but the gags are constant and everywhere!
Peace!

I was first introduced by a friend who couldnt stop yabbering on about Futurama and kept on quoting it. I thought it looked silly with one eyed aliens and alchohol powered robots. But my friend just kept nagging me to watch it. So I gave in.

That was probably the greatest decision I have ever made in my uneventful life.

I luved that line at the begining it rocked, "My parents my co-workers my girlfriend. i'll never see any of them again......YAHOO!" Oh and i luved the idea of a suicide booth. That line when they are about to get killed and you hear "By the way my names Bender!" That is like the worst time to say it thats what makes it so great. And we see for the first time the travel tubes and you see Fry going round in them. Then he comes out the otherside and flys into a wall and a man says "Tourist!"

A great episode to start the show

the start to Futurama was cool, it introduced fry's notsogood life well and showed what was going on well. The introduction to Bender & Leela were good too, and the first thing Bender said gave us a good first impression of his personality, and we got to see that he was a nice and funny guy too. I felt sorry for him when he was going to kill himself!!!
It was also good when they found out Fry had a relative living in the year 3000 which gave him somewhere to go and a job to go with it. It was also proof to the others that he was from the year 2000.
A good structured episode and a good start to the series!

ignore last review!just seen this episode again and decided to change review.i have just found my favourite
scene in this episode.
LEELA:you have until the count of 3 to get me out of here!1-(leela gets frozen, the dial sets to 1000 years.)
FRY:hehehe!see you next millenium!(fry walks away, then goes back to the freezer and sets it to 5 minutes.)
FRY:you owe me one.
(another scene interrupts)
leela:2-3-hey!
SCIENTIST:(dramatically)welcome to the world of toommoorrrrooww!
LEELA:(slowly)shut up terry.
that scene was great, and keeps in tradition with keeping the classic simpsons comedy, without repeating it over and over again(like the new episodes)the great impact of the show as fry wakes up is a great way to start the series.

that the envelope from farnsworth's last crew had the phrase "contents of space wasp expedition"(or something like that)written on it?a direct reference to episode SO5E09-the sting.proof that stories of past incidents on futurama are not written differently or changed.

More an intro to the series, the episode did have some good moments. One interesting tidbit, you see Nibbler's shadow when Fry goes to sit down before falling in the tube ala The Why of Fry. In another episode (Anthology of Interst I?), you see Nibbler's eye in the trash can peering up. Lots of subtle humor in the series.

The great first episode of a phenomenal series. But here's the kicker...

Watch when Fry falls into the cryogenic freezer. When they show the foot of his chair tilting back, what shadow is it under the desk? Is that Fry's from Season 5 4ACV10 (The Why of Fry)? More examples of the pre-planning :)

As being one of the most memorable episodes of the series (which by the way is being renewed), I give it a five. This episode has definitely much more secrets that have yet to be revealed. In this episode, it hints us about Fry's destiny, with Nibbler's shadow, plus foreshadows episodes such as "The Sting" when professor uses the chips from the old crew, which came from a space wasp's stomach.

I wanted to note a few of my discoveries while re-watching this episode. Though this is already mentioned on Wikipedia, the pub Fry passes on his bike to the cryogenetics lab in the introduction must have been bought out and you see Fry and Bender in the same pub with a different name (and possibly the same New Year's banner) later.

Though this might not possibly lead to a future event, when Fry and Bender visit Old New York, Fry mentions that the ruins of his old city bring back memories. Bender then adds "Keep 'em to yourself, Pops!". The nickname "Pops" was the thing that got me thinking. I never recalled Bender doesn't call him anything different than some insult or something along the lines of "meatbag", so is it possible that Fry is to become a father in the series, or it can also be referring that he will become (or at that point possibly is) the father of his father.

Then, since I was watching the commentary of that episode, when the peace officers finally come to the Planet Express building for the job deserters, "Matt & Friends" briefly yell "secret" when it shows the peace officers with Richard Nixon's head outside. When I paused it, I noticed that the peace officer second to the left is a girl (note the eyelashes and body shape). Not just that, she has the "pig nose" that Cubert has, and pale yellow skin similar to Amy's. Is it possible that Amy isn't an only child? Maybe she'll have some importance in the series. The peace officer furthest to the left might have an importance, and I do believe he appears again when shooting off the fireworks when Fry, Leela, Bender, and the Professor escape in the Planet Express ship.

The last thing I noticed was that in the end on the ship, the Professor asks if Fry, Leela, and Bender would like to become his new crew. Bender cuts in and questions about his old crew, and the professor says "Of those poor sons of- but that's not important." Was there some blood relation between the old crew members? There is possibly more to learn about them.

That's all I had to say. Matt G., David C., and all the rest of the crew on Futurama did a good job on this episode. Well done!

Wow. I just noticed something. In the later episodes where Fry finds out that Nibbler had a role in his freezing, I never thought that it was initially planned - that it was something developed further in the series. But I was just re-watching this episode and there is a frame where you see Fry's chair and his dropped party whistle after he's fallen into the freezer and you can clearly see Nibbler's shadow. Great foreshadowing Matt, great foreshadowing!

I think this episode was a great way to open the series. I loved the way it was opened with fry playing a space invaders game, the lines "you stink, loser!","you are partially surrounded" and "we respect your dignity. Now go strip naked and get on the probulator", and the worldwide countdown. It introduced you to lots of characters, but didn't cram you full of them. I have never missed an episode since, because this left a lasting impression on me. I give it a 5

This was the best way to start a funny, cool, awsome series. I couldn't ask for a better episode. Did yall notice when fry and leela touched hands for the first time they looked deeply into each others eyes. But of course we know bender. The ruiner of all moments. This episode was great, and as good as you can expect from any pilot. Hell, the title alone is pretty great. The humor is fantastic, but well balanced by the plot advancements. Good introduction to Bender and Leela as well. Overall, it's easily in my top 10 list.

This is my second all-time favorite episode! I'm the kind of guy who likes looking back on the old episodes of a sitcom. And this is the best pilot episode of any sitcom I've ever seen! Leela makes her first appearance and I already thought she was the prettiest woman ever(and I had never thought a mutant can look so sexy). Bender and Fry also great for their first appearance. They're as funny as Bart and Homer Simpson! So all in all, this is one 5 star episode!

A very good episode. The nibbler shadow was good to see, because Futurama makes more sense. A lot of good humour, and I worked out some of the alien language, because there was a Slurm advert when fry was running away from leela, and a slurm advert behind bender and fry when they were in the pub. The only downside is that the animation wasn't as good as good as later on in the series (the animation was better after leela took off her coat).

Not just a fantastic pilot, but one of the best episodes in the series. The story is absolutely epic and does a perfect job of setting up the premise of the show as well as introducing us to the setting and the rich, colorful, complex, hillarious, and distinctly unique main characters. Comedically, this episode does not miss a single beat with plenty of clever and funny jokes. One huge error I can't believe they didn't catch before the episode aired is that the whole world does not celebrate the new year at the same time. Overlooking that giant mistake, this is a fantastic episode.

The perfect first episode; it accomplishes everything that a pilot is supposed to accomplish. It introduces us to the characters in a funny and compelling way; it sets up some of the major arcs that will drive the series (Fry's feelings about being frozen and his past; Leela being orphaned and wanting to find her parents; Bender's love of booze and wise-assery; and, of course, Planet Express and all the wacky intergalactic fun to be had there), and it's just plain old funny. It's not only one of the best episodes of the first season--it's one of the best episodes of the series. And that's no small feat, considering how lousy some pilots are.

A perfect first episode. Good, enjoyable story, lots of action, good character introduction. Plus probably the best Futurama dialogue ever:
"Are you a real live robot? Or is this just one of those new year's costumes?"
"Bite my shiny metal ass!"
"Doesn't look so shiny to me."
"Shinier than yours, meatbag."

Ah, the introduction to one of the greatest characters ever...

Neat way to start off a series that has the most unpredictable episodes and critically acclaimed series.
This was the beginning of Futurama being under the radar of critical reviews, big fanbase, etc.
So since this is 13 years since this episode came out. I just feel like making this review. Let's get started.

The Pros:
-This was the start of Bender's wildfire of fans, he started off with some nice jokes.
-To go off the first positive, Bender was making all of the jokes now.
-Fry not caring about everyone in the year 2000 made me get a good laugh
The Cons:
Nothing

This is pretty predictable.

Possibly one of the best series premieres since a long time. While the pacing is perfect and the episode was interesting, all the creativeness of this episode ties it all up into this. Also a lot of great jokes, the introduction of Bender, and really felt like this series had hope. The best part is that they didn't introduce every single character and saved some for the rest of Season 1 to discover.

This is the episode that kicked things off so it deserves no less than a 5-star rating. It sets up the most important characters: Fry, Leela, Bender, Professor Farnsworth, and yet it leaves a few of them out of the pilot (Amy, Hermes, etc.) to introduce to viewers at a later time, thereby not shoving too much in your face at once. The pacing is good, the animation is superb. The voice acting may be strange to anyone who started at a later season because the VAs were just getting their chops fine-tuned but that's not a real negative. The pilot sets up an overall grand and serious tone with comedic undertones, which are the trademarks Futurama bonded together with loving care.

This is the best animated pilot I have seen, all other pilots (Simpsons, Family Guy or South Park) get to be confused what they are. They tell what the show is going to be about but they don't make it detailed.
This episode makes a detailed awesome journey: The way that Fry has a crappy life having to deliver pizza, to him being frozen for a thousand years, to him meeting Leela and his horrified reaction knowing that he would be a delivery boy (again) over having a painful process of a chip installed in his hand... and so on.
It's all very exciting, this pilot makes you eager to watch the show. Most pilots of good shows I have seen can be crappy so it puts you off a little from the show. This is not the case with this show and I respect that!
