Brilliant episode, we get to see Professor Farnsworth's personality shine in this episode and we are introduced to one of his many inventions. A great Simpsons reference too and a cool bit where Fry helps people in the 30th century with what he learnt in the 20th Century.

I thought this was a great episode. It was by far the best episode in Futurama's first season. It was great from begginning to end. It was a pretty good Armaggedon like episode too. As I'm sure you all noticed, Matt Groening snuck in a little Simpsons scene when they showed a pile of Bart Simpson dolls on the garbage ball. I give this episode a rating of 5.

Probably the best episode in the First Season, this is an ironical 20 minute take on the 20th century and the consequences of its irresponsible attitude on a "semi-perfect" future. The irony is almost overwhelming; and the episode is very well-written, as a whole (include the Professor's old grudge with Wernstrom), and definitely worthy of the Emmy nomination. This is what Futurama is all about: smart satire of both future clichs and cheap sci-fi and present ignorance and irresponsability. Not the funniest, sure -- but superb as a concept.

Another episode that was good, but not one of the best.
I like the Simpsons refrence, Bender ate Barts shorts! ^^

"Hmm, i'll have to invent something new in the next 10 minuets, perhaps some sort of Death clock..."

"Did you build a Smelescope?"
"No, i rememerd that i built one last year!"

Probably my favorite episode of the first season! I loved the whole Internet scene and Fry's attempts at teaching the world of tomorrow HOW to litter. The Professor got many great moments to shine, particularly every time he said the words, "death clock."

Funnier even than the Simpson's reference was the pocket of discarded AOL floppy disks! That killed me.

As for the next ball of garbage, what goes around, comes around.

its ok but it doesn't all make sense, if they had to make a delivery the day after the scientist's award thing they missed the delivery. fry found the garbage ball during the day, as is obvouse cause you can see the sky.

nobody mentions the deliver exept right before the intro.

it doesn't make sense!!

good episode otherwise though

Best bitz:

Prof:'I've got something that'll put you young whippersnappers in your place!'
Wornstrom:'I hope it's not as lame as that death clock you made last year.'
Prof:'Oh my... Did it put you young whippersnappers in your place?'
Wornstrom:'No.'
(Wornstrom leaves)
Prof:'Oh my. I'll have to invent something within the next 10 minutes, perhaps some kind of death clock...'

Prof:'The smell travels through this coffee stain, around this olive pip and into this cigar burn. And... this, appears to be a... doodle of... myself, as a cowboy.'

Prof:'5, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4'(keeps counting)
Leela:'Just launch the damn thing.'
Fry:'OK'(he misses the button, tries again and presses it.) 'There we go.'

I was bent double with laughter on that second one.

Great, especially Professor Farnsworth and his senility. Of course, a few things didn't make sense, like: how could a garbage ball that's so mushy a missile can go through it be able to destroy a large city? That doesn't matter though because this is sci-fi and they can make up whatever they want. 5/5

It was great to have a episode centered around Farnsworth. This episode really helps to develop character of Farnsworth more than any other episode that I have seen. I think this is also the first time we know that Zoidberg is very hungry. We are also introduced to the mayor. This is one of my favorite episodes of Futurama and my favorite in the first season!

Plenty of great jokes, but the storyline wasnt fantastic.

The part about the death clock
Leela: Does it really work
Prof: Oh, its occasionally off by one or two minutes, what with free will and all.

Fry: Its not filth. Its a great monument to the achievements of the twentieth century

And my favourite line
Bender: MMmmmmmmm, shorts.

That whole Uranus bit just raised my sense of humor.

"25 minutes...15 minutes...05 minutes...6h minutes?"

This episode can be given nothing less than a 5. "Michael", Dr. M.", and "futuramastinks" are as gay as Fox's reality shows. I think this is the best episode, and I've seen all but the early parts of season 5! Very good jokes (especially the professor's usual insanity.) This was one of the first episodes that I ever saw, and it's what got me hooked on Futurama! Quote: (The Professor at the Academy) "Oh my, I presented the Death Clock last year! I have to make another invention in the next ten minutes! Hmm, perhaps some sort of Death Clock!"

I love this episode because its one of the first ones i ever saw and also the very first one i downloaded. When ever i think of futurama i think of this episode. I really like it becasue it gives so much information about the year 3000 on earth, instead of them running around some abstract planet with some crazy plot.

I personally think that this episode is a classic and i will keep watching it again and again whenever i feel the need for some futurama.

I can't believe more people didn't mention Fry's reaction to the garbage ball! Seriously, I must have rewound and watched that on the DVD about 25 times in a row at least 10 times. That is truly a noise of greatness. The timer part also rules. Also, just the part in the video where they're playing that same music when the porno starts up...oh I won't get into detail on that. By far the best one of the first season. And as far as the Bart Simpson joke, I found David Cohen comment on the commentary funnier than the joke itself..."How did we ever get permission to use that sound clip?"

We want to tell you our opinion about this episode. We watched it in our English lesson, because we had the topic environment.
This is our favourite episode. It is just great how Matt Groening showed the spirit of the 20th century and how it is going to destroy the world suffocating under mountains of garbage. We also liked the competition between Warnstroem and Prof. Farnsworth. That showed in a funny way how people compete for a bit of glory and acknowledgement. The insertion of the Simpsons made the whole episode round of.
It was quite a good thought to think of Armageddon and to change the episode into a Futurama-like failure you can laugh about.

We watched the episode "A Big Piece of Garbage" in an English lesson. One of us didnt like it, because she thinks it is unreal, but the others believe it was funny, for example the reverse scuba suit. They criticize the people of the 21st century and how we treat our environment. This episode shows us the way we think about the people of tommorrow and the future.
And this is what we like so much about Futurama and the Simpsons. They combine a funny story with a critical view at the problems of our present society.

Well, every animated show has its "meteor" episode, and this couldn't have been done better. With a brilliant amount of jokes and a great Armageddon parody, we've got another Futurama classic.

One of the best episodes from season 1, and whilst the show was yet to reach the highs of season 3 and beyond, it's a very funny episode.

I need to make a case here for this being the best Futurama episode ever made. It's not just an Armageddon parody, it's a warning for everyone alive today and everone alive tomorrow, provided you're not dead. This episode has more impact when watched with and open mind than being hit in the nuts by a gladiotorial pugil stick whilst stood with open legs. Best Episode Ever. Well, maybe almost ever. 'Mars Universiry' comes close. And 'The Why of Fry'. Man, the way that 'Scooty Puff Jnr' falls apart is one of the funniest things ever drawn hundreds of times over by Koreans in poor conditions... Hilarious...

There's nothing offensively bad about this episode, but there's also nothing too great about it. It's a decent Farnsworth-centric episode (and probably the first of the series), but there are better disaster-ish episodes to come.
