Decent episode that included the clasic quote about how Mars was like Utah in the 20th century (a dreary uninhabitable wasteland) but unlike Utah Mars was eventually made liveable. Also, nice spoof on Animal House type movies

I think this episode is severely underrated. Bender's cuts are satirically brilliant; I really laughed out loud when Robot House "assaulted" the female dormitorium. I didn't like the monkey as much (in fact, I found it hands-down annoying) not Fry's rivalry, but the rest is VERY well conceived. Overall, an episode that stands right up there with Futurama's standards.

Cant believe people didnt like the monkey, although he wouldnt have been as funny if it wasnt for Fry's reaction to him, for example, the funniest moment was when the monkey puts the hat on his butt and Fry giggles. Also the "how do you like them bananas" and "Cheese It!"

Funny, funny episode.
Was it just me or did the Monkey sound just like Nelson from the Simpsons?
This was also the first episode with the great Bender quote:

How can you not love Guenter? Everyone loves monkeys, especially animators!

It was a nice little deviation from Earth, and they managed to add Amy to the mix ('Wow, smart and cute!').

In going to Mars U, Fry makes it his goal to enroll and then drop out, making him a certified college dropout (his dropout status from the 20th century is not valid). At his dormroom, he gets a roommate in the form of Guenter, Farsnworth's supersmart moneky. Soon, Fry is left in the dust as Guenter one-ups him at almost everything.

Meanwhile, Bender joins his old fraternity, which has become a house of nerds. Soon, their antics have the Dean of Mars U in an uproar (Ro-bot HOOOUUUUSSSEEE!). The Animal House-style antics were great.

Robot house was an achievement in hilarity. but a tragedy befell this comic genius, his name is guenter. this f***ing thing was a pain in the ass. I had a pepsi two ounce bottle shoved directly into my rectum and i found it to be a more pleasurable experience than viewing this episode.
p.s. i think it was pepsi, it could have been mello yello

Good episode, not great but good. The monkey is funny, sometimes. Fatbot, Gearshift, and Oily are funny though. Sneaking around with Bender was very funny. Bender had a big part which is good, but Zoidburg was left on Earth I guess. The gag with all the jungle animals falling out of the tree had me cracking up. Overall this episode is good but since they were on Mars it shoulda been better. The only reason it got a four is because I compared it too other great Futurama episodes. Oh well, still funny and clever.

Definitely an underrated episode. Lots of college movie homages, Robot House was hilarious. I hated Gunther's voice but his rivalry with Fry was brilliant.

Fry: "......I don't like you."

And the blurbs at the end were pure gold.

I was going to give a four, but several things kick this episode up a notch. The ending is great, especially the spill the snob house members take. The Bender plot was a superb spoof of college movies. Also, I thought Gunther was excellently voiced, especially in the "how do you like *those* bananas?" and "...with Chrissy." lines.

I just have found out about this website. As a fan of Futurama and pretty much a fan of any Matt Groening works. I really like this episode. This episode is incredibly funny and I can't explain the low rating. My favorite part is when Guenther falls and the professor wants to gather him up so he can eat him.

A good episode. It had some great moments, like when the elephant fell on the other animals, and the Prof. wanted to gather Gunther up after he fell and then eat him. The transferring to business school bit was funny too.

I truly think this episode was awesome. It was the first Futurama episode I saw and holds a lot of memories. But I really like the fact that the monkey gets emotions and knowledge from a hat. I wish it could be that easy in modern times. I guess it gives me hope for the kids in the 31st century.

This is one of the greater episodes of the series which is kind of pathetic.Sure it was annoying with Guenter and all but the rivalry between RobotHouse and Dean Vernon was hillarious.You just have to ignore the monkey,then you'll find the true greatness of the episode.

I still cant beleive some people hate this episode. To me I loved it alot of parts had me L.O.L.ing. Oh and nice touch with the talking thinking monkey with the hat. I loved the parts when Dean Vernon shouted, "Robot House!". Hilarious episode.

Guenter was to much of a snot for me to really enjoy it.

On the positive side, when Guenter told Fry he prefers banana flavored energy bars made of tofu, and when Fry narrowed his eyes and said: "I don't like you." was funny.

This used to be one of my favorites, but I think it was more due to pleasant associations it holds for me... On repeated viewing, it drags a little, and the "ROBOT HOUUUUUSEEE!" bits get a bit tired.

But still worth it if only for that immortal line, "I just wanted to be a moderately intelligent monkey in a suit... that's why i'm going to business school!"

This episode was pretty bad except for two scenes. The one where the Professor says he'll be teaching "The Mathmatics of quantum neutreno fields" and Fry says, "Mathmatics of wonton burrito meals". And the second was when Bender and his Frat buddies are on the ladder and when they see the inside of the computer their eyes bulge out. Besides that, where was Dr. Zoidberg in this episode!?

i didnt like this episode. the fry half was good but bender's end was lame and boring. the monkey's voice was annoying but that matches how annoying he looks. fry had a lot of great moments. his "i don't like you" was perfect. though this was one of those episodes where they had to emphasize fry's stupidity, which can be annoying when it's overdone. i tend to not like episodes with random stupid plots, and where they dont ride the ship even once! still, fry carries this one. it had a decent # of good jokes, (secret handshake, litebrite!, "..i don't like you.", falling elephant, BANANA BANANA BANANA, fry giggling a lot) but nothing tied together very well and nothing really happened or stood out. well, now i know who that monkey with a front row seat at fry's funeral is...

As an engineering professor, who stated that I could get a trained monkey a Ph.D. in the current, screwed-up university education system, I absolutely loved this episode. So much of the imagery and dialogue are so true: eg. "Knowledge is Fear", and "I'm a Professor, I don't know how to teach" The only problem is that my students would take the episode too seriously, and the other faculty have all drank the kool-aid and wouldn't get the humor. As an avid cartoon fan, I dispair when others cannot find the humor behind the hubris.

'Mars University' is funny in places - it has some clever observations on college education and some nice references to 'National Lampoon's Animal House', but the big problem is that the Gunther character is so obnoxious, that when they want us to sympathise with him, its not fesible. Still, overall a watchable episode.

(I should establish very early that when I rate a show poorly, it's by Futurama's standards, not overall TV standards, otherwise I'd give almost every episode a 5. Even the worst episode of Futurama is good television!)

This episode breaks a basic rule -don't parody a comedy. It's hard to make fun of something that's played for laughs already and you just end up repeating a lot of the scenes.
It also features what is possibly the worst, most annoying character from the show's run: Guenter.
It's certainly the worst episode of the first production season.
That said and done, it's got some great jokes and it's still enjoyable enough to watch.
