Ooohhh, what a wasted premise! When I saw the episode guide, I crossed my fingers, because I thought that this was going to be one of the DEFINITE Bender episodes; just because so MUCH could have been developed out of Bender's typical attitude and in-your-face liners. When I finally saw it, disappointment struck me.
You got the scenario by now, if you've seen the episode. You must've gotten the bad Rocky ripoffs, and every other wrestling, boxing and every other action B-movie clich� on the episode. The problem is that the screenplay doesn't go anywhere; elements are thrown in and Bender fells uncharacteristically passive - when so many possible replies could have been ripped off of him.
The Gender Bender was a nice twist, paved with ridicule, but it really didn't pay off in comical terms. I didn't laugh at all with this subterfuge.
One element that was really taken out of nowhere was Leela's master. A typical B-movie element that really felt out of place, mainly because the spectator doesn't know the guy from Adam, and the episode doesn't even try to make part of the story. His presence was ENTIRELY gratuitous, and an unfortunate character cameo. Maybe in a future Futurama (oh, my god;) episode we'll get the chance to see him in a better context. I'd really appreciate a better episode on Leela's "training", I think it had potential.
The robots that Bender fought were bland, none of them remarkable in any way - and we could have had Clamps from the Robot Mafia in (and the Robot Mafia itself, for all it's worth, illegal bets on robot wrestling and other illicit deals would be more than welcome in this ep), or even Robotic Nixon (41-times World Champion, in the past 41 days)... you get the drift. That Immigrant one was the last drop; badly conceived, another concept flushed down the toilet.
The directing and animations were competent, but they really couldn't add much to a bland episode. There were two great scenes however that I really loved and feature as unique in Futurama's already great repertoire of 3D animations: 1) the black-and-white slow-motion scene in Bender's final fight ("mommy..."); 2) Leela's fight was also extrememely well-done.
But just this doesn't amount to much. On the whole, the episode fails all its goals, and, along with "Brannigan Begins Again" it's one of the worst episodes of the season. Too bad.

You know, Bender and the robots he faced are similar to some very wrestlers from Old School WWF, New Generation WWF, Early-90s WCW and WWF Attitude:
Bender the Offender(Bender's first gimmick) is like Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock since he has the fans on his side!
The Gender Bender(Bender's second gimmick) bears a big resemblence to Goldust since both are gay in the ring!
The Clear Cutter is based on the gimmick that Matt "I'm the original Doink the Clown" Borne potrayed in WCW as the mighty Blumberjack named Big Josh!
Billionaire Bot is a robotic cop-off of former wrestler The Million Dollarman Ted Dibiase.
The Foreigner is similar to The Iron Sheik since hs has a mustache!
The Chain Smoker is also like longtime wrestler and road agent The Brooklyn Brawler because they're both big, fat and smokers to boot!
And Destructor is similar to all the giants in pro-wrestling like Kevin Nash, El Gigante, the late great Big John Studd and the late great Andre the Giant!

One of my fave episodes. I feel as though SilverLght was nit picking bigtime, i agree Leela's former instructor cameacross as a bit anonymous, but i feel he worked well enough considering the limited time allowed for his entance. All the other robot wreslers portrayed were blatently cliched rip offs of past real fe wrestlers, which added great to the humour (whoever said the Foreigner was a bad character needs to lighten up), the whole face to heel thing they did to Benders wrestling character was classic, overall fantastic episode.

Great episode. I liked when the Professor said "Down in front!" when he was in the front row and Bender's "I'm a real toughy!"

Also, the Galaxy Quest gag when they were looking at a poster for Galaxy Wars was funny, especially since I watched the first run of this episode a couple weeks after seeing Galaxy Quest.

I've missed most Futurama past the first season - over here in England they seem not to bother repeating it at decent times - but i caught this one late last night and laughed myself silly. I loved Master Fnog, and his cackling speeches about "the will of the warrior." Lots of funny Bender bits too. I think I'll order series 2 on dvd when i get paid...

I liked this episode. It didn't rank up there with, "Time Keeps on Slippin'" or "Roswell Taht Ends Well" but a good episode. A lot of good, short, funny jokes were in the episode.

"And he didn't look half bad in a tutu."
"That he did surely not."
"What?"

The Leela/Phnog thing could have had a little more backround, but otherwise a good interwoven plot..
Bender felt a little....forced. He just kinda didn't seem like his normal self. SilverLight was right, they should've had me, Clamps, in the ring! I woulda clamped em' one!!! Anyway, a good episode, but it could have been better. A worth while episode. Clamps gives it 4 out of 5.

How could I not like it? It had Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot in the movie theater in the beginning. I'm also a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and I'm glad to see that at least some of the writers are, too. MST3K did a couple of movies about wrestling (Racket Girls, Sampson vs. Vampire Women, etc)

Normally, I'd give this episode a four, but because Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot made an appearance, I must give it a five. However, would it have been too hard to get Trace Beaulieu in there to do Crow's one line? That would have been a real treat. Now the rest of the episode is pretty good, the wrestling stuff is funny and everything else in the movie theater was awesome. I really liked "Down in Front" and the entire news reel with This Week in the Universe was perfect.

Perhaps by biggest laugh comes from reading the reviews here: "The Foreigner is similar to The Iron Sheik since hs has a mustache!" Wow, that's a stretch.

I also loved the MST3K reference. Now two of my favorite shows that were taken away from me too early. Sniff.

And perhaps the brain slug starving to death on Fry's head is foreshadowing the fact that Fry's brain is not like other human brains? Nah, he's just an idiot.

Hahaha. The references to the cliches of wrestling just killed me because they're so true. The WWE (formerly WWF) created so many characters that we were supposed to hate because they were foreign, including an evil Finn. When you're trying to start feuds with Finland, you've hit rock bottom.

Like every Futurama this episode was very entertaining. Unlike other episodes though it wasn't particularly funny. Sure there was a laugh here and there but so far I'd have to say it's my least favorite of season 2. ( Although I have only seen like seven of the eps from seeason 2) (Catching up on the DVD's ;)

It was Awesome!!!!!!!I liked the part when they were at the movies and Bender kept kicking The Masked Unit seat and then threw popcorn at him and then TMU got up and said "SIR! I challenge you to fisty cuffs!" and then Bender just laughs. Then TMU changes to wrestling mode and Bender says (I think) "Man! I'm boned" THAT WAS HILARIOUS!!!!! I also like the part when Distrutor crashes through the wall and says "I AM DISTRUTOR NALALALALAL!!!!" and then Bender squeeks "see ya at the fight! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

People seem to rather enjoy this show due to its references to boxing and wrestling characters. Might I say that, while these are extremely popular in America, these sports mean close to nothing in Europe - so an European can't be expected to understand the jokes and catch all the gags. All reviews must be based on the episode's inherent value - and, on that level, it fails big time.

Nice one but again not one of the bests, the story is pretty weak in my opinion, but there are some good gags like the "Gender Bender" (in German this joke get lost because the translation is "Der geschlechtsumgewandelte Bender")

All of those in your face lines are cool, but then again Bender is well, OK. The gags were somewhat funny, but it takes a lot more humor to make me laugh after all I am a hard judge!

I lovedd George Foreman's(sp?) grill joke,keeps me laughing forever and ever etc. I kind of related the Foreigner to Muhammed Hassan, especially as Hassan was always talkin' about how he's not from here and gets treated differently. 'Course he got fired cuz he was middle eastern......whatever. Poor guy. Anyway, I hated when Beender turned heel(as gender bender), but that's the way they want you to react, so you're happy that he loses. The corupption that has been going on in the wrestling business for years. Sucks. Anyway, very funny episode, and I'm hungry.

This episode was good, i think that the face Dr Zoidberg pulls when the proffessor is given the book by Amy and says "Ooh Zoidberg, theres a wonderful photo of you in here (his reading glasses rip through the book and are pointing at Zoidberg)".
Anyway the face he pulls is really good and i give the episode around 7 - 10.

Pure genius. I have only just discovered this series. Was warming to it alot after a couple of dvd's worth, but this episode has made me a devotee. The pace and density, of gags is relentless, but best of all are the total absurdist characters like lila's trainer and benders opponents. I think the only people that didn't like it must be offended WWF fans.
