This episode was so-so. The filming of the movie was very funny, but the rest of the episode suffered. I mean what was that bit with Fry and Leela in the tar pit? Had potential to be better.

I agree with Dieter, it was a good episode but not one of the best. I liked the fact that we see what Calculon is like in real life, & the 30th Centary Fox joke was cool. Not as good as "Why Must I be a Crustacian in Love?", the other Zoidberg episode but not bad either. Whats with the tar pit, that was just pointless.

One of the worst episodes in Futurama's history. The jokes became stale, Zoidberg became stale, the plot became stale. THere was too much potential for something taht just stumbled along like a drunk elephant. But considering anything else that is on TV it was pretty funny, but that isn't enough. One of the few episodes that I don't get excited to rewatch.

I like it, but I don't know why. Probably it was the scenes involving the actual movie, "The Magnificent 3". I've seen horrible movies before (coughScary Moviecough), and I just got a kick out of how bad this one was.

Oh, by the way. Baz. "THere was too much potential for something taht just stumbled along like a drunk elephant"? What the flying fudge are you talking about? Did you expect some tanked elephant to walk onto the screen, staggering along and all? (Actually, that might be an idea for a future episode. Someone get me an elephant and some heavy beer.)

I may be alone on this one, but I really loved this episode. The story was very good, and Calculon's character is starting to develop a lot better. The most visually outstanding sequence was definetly the end, in which the shot pulled backward to reveal the whole of Hollywood. Outstanding.

I wonder if part of the reason I loved this episode so much is that I actually know who Harold Lloyd was (a silent-era screen comic). . . The 'classic' Harold Zoid film short was great, and I'm partial to Zoidberg anyway, so I loved it.

I'd agree that the tarpit plot with Fry and Leela was weak, but I prefer to pretend it never happened.

Zoidberg is getting more and more annoying. In the beginning, Zoidberg had been an ugly guy who pretended to be a doctor, but by now he is the figure that causes headshaking again and again. I wonder if a figure can be even less interesting... Even Bender is getting more boring with each series... I wonder why Fox cancelled the series... :(

I wondered about giving this episode 1, but it had some good quotes, like:

"Bender? That was the other guy, my name's Boiler."
Followed by:
"Nice work Boiler." "Thanks, and call me Bender."

"Let me see the script... No. I don't like the font."

Some other good quotes as well, but it didn't save the horrible execution of a average plot. And with horrible scenes such as the tar pit, this ended up as my least favorite Futurama episode ever.

In order to express my opinoin about this episode and, of course, to affect the rating, I'll give it a 5. C'mon guys, it was great. I think there are just too many people who didn't like the fact that Zoidberg has true feelings and feels compassion for his uncle. I mean, the jokes were great (fav. quotes: "Oh, pardon me, I see you're with Mr. Stallone" ; "Bender? That was the other guy. My name's Boiler"..."Nice work Boiler"."Thanks. And call me Bender" ; "Star of the Hit Movie...Bravehead"). And the plot was way above average.
I think some of you always shoot low ratings at episodes where any character shows feelings for his family members or friends...

Zoidburg cannot carry an episode on his own. In 'Why must i be a crustacean in love'there was enough of Fry, Leela and bender to keep it going, and going well.

In this, Fry and Leela get to sit in a tar pit, thus removing them entirely from the plot.
And essentially since they are two thirds of the trio that make this series, that cannot be but a bad move.

Good points: None apparent.

Bad points: Too numerous to mention.

Best Lines:

This episode was really poor. There was no real humor in it at all. It explained and developed Zoidbergs character a bit but apart from that it sucked. Bender and Zoidberg are never a good pair to leave alone. It needed more apperenced by Fry, Leela and the professor. I am just sad that 1 is the lowest score I can give this episode. Zoidberg's funny when he isn't acting pathetic or stupid. He seemed more like a normal person in this and "Why Must I Be A Crustacean In Love?" The plot was creative and funny. The showbiz theme was weird but nice and different. I like that Bender and Calculon were involved in the main plot. The pacing was average. Some scenes seemed to go on too long.

Harold's crazy directing was very funny and the movie "The Magnificent Three" was so bad it was good. I didn't like Fry and Leela in the tar pit. Couldn't the writers think of something better for them to do? Luckily, there were few tar pit scenes. The ending was sentimental and clichd, but it was a fitting end for the episode.

Overall, this was a good episode, although the ending and subplot could have been better.

Not a great episode by any means but the bit where Calculon expresses his emotional talent by shouting "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" at the top of his voice on the roof of the white house was priceless. I didn't like this episode. Zoidberg has some of the best lines in the show, but no good ones in this episode. Dull dialogue, dull storyline.

It proves that Zoidberg is a dish best served in small bites to spice up the main course. Or that whoever wrote his dialogue in this episode doesn't really understand what makes him so lovable. You pick.

This was the only Futurama episode I would give less than a "4" to. What is the point of having "futurama" if the plot could be from anytime? What I mean is the whole story here could have been posted in the present, not 1000years from now. They could have almost taken the whole story and made a simpson's episode out of it. Everything which makes Futurama great was omitted from this episode.

This episode has highs and lows, the filming of the movie is totally cool, and there are some great one lines, most notably "Im sorry I see you're with mr stallone" and "I've got somebody elses oscar!". Unfortunately the plot feels a little disjointed, and there is an overdependance on zoidberg to provide the laughs. Could do with more farnsworth. And the tar pit is apparently an attempt to explain whats happened to fry and leela since they somehow got lost during the episode, so it isn't pointless, just covering agap in the plot.

I think Harold Zoid is the cutest and funniest character ever on Futurama. The bits with him not on were a bit rubbish, I agree, but some of his lines had me laughing out loud ("Throw a pie o' two for god's sake!") and the scenes with the extras were hilarious. Bring back Harold Zoid!

Why is this episode at a 58%? This makes fun of everything Hollywood, and just bad movies in general...

Harold Zoid was pretty funny and Zoidberg was great, but that's to be expected, he is Zoidberg after all! Bender was just perfect too as "Boiler", but Calculon made this one worth watching for me.
"Noooo I don't like the font."
Great episode, although I do think it could've done without the Fry and Leela tarpit subplot. I would give it a "4", but seeing as how it's so low I'm gonna go ahead and give it a "5" anyway. Great episode.

I was seriously expecting the worst episode ever. But while I wasn't pleasantly surprised, it was still better than The Honking. As it is, very few LOL parts, and I agree, what was with the tar pit? I just kept saying, "They're going somewhere with this, right?" Nope.

Tour lady: To your right, you'll see 30th century fox studios. Fox uses those search lights to blind pilots, then film the resulting plane crashes
Bender: Neat!

Two things saved this episode from complete mediocrity:

1) Zoidberg running into Ebola.
2) The fact that in the future, ideas have been running out so much that someone would actually make a movie called "How Beige Was My Jacket?"

Also, I'd like to note an error. In the Head in the Polls episode, you see Sylvester Stallone's head in a jar in the head museum under the movie stars section. So how did his skeleton end up in an L.A. tar pit?

First off, I don't trust anyone who calls any Futurama episode "awful" or "horrible" especially if they give no evidence as to why they feel this way; these are not true fans of the show.

A lot of the jokes were much more low-brow than usual, but I believe that was the point, with Harold Zoid being a former silent movie star, from the 30th century no less. The La Brea Tar Pits was as superfluous as Zoid's directorial re-debut.

Sometimes thinking is better than laughing.

I love Zoidberg as much as the next manbot, but this one was so bad I'll focus on the positives- I can't bring myself to give any episode of FUTURAMA a 1, and this one gets a 2 rating for its two good jokes: The compact parking in LA gag, and the throwaway Stallone joke which pays off handsomely at the end.
Otherwise, horrible and more horribler.

As "That guy" would say, this episode is awesome to the max. Guest stars and peripheral characters carried the episode, (with the one exception of bender) which was brilliant because we didnt need the main characters except to remind us that is a Futuramam episode.

It is a perfect example why the show is so good. It is set in a really funny universe. Not just some funny people in a regular universe, but everything and everyone have a story and something about them to make us smile.

While some may say that it was a weakness to not have Fry and Leela involved, I think it just shows the strength of the show.

This episode just didn't work. Zoidberg isn't a strong enough character to base an entire episode around with little or no help from the main characters. Also, all the Hollywood jokes? Either tired, unfunny, or bewilderingly old. When was the last time someone made a joke about Marisa Tomei's Oscar?

Harold Zoid was an irritating, mean character whom I couldn't have cared less about. Also, his feet freaked me out. Though it's always nice to see Calculon.

Almost as bad was that we pretty much lost Fry and Leela. Their subplot felt tacked-on and pointless.

Il Barto is correct, this episode just isn't good and I have watched it over and over on my DVD and I can't explain why. It simply isn't as enjoyable to watch as a whole. The individual events and jokes are entertaining so don't let the low rating deter you from watching this.

yeah a in betweeny episode for me. I didn't really know what to think of it. Zoidburg isn't the funniest of all characters, although a lot of people think that. But this episode is slightly different, becuase thier making a movie.

Calculon: Everyone walked out. They hated it, I've seen plagues more popular than this. You said that oscar was practically on my mantle.

Bender: Now you know why I used the qualifier 'practically'.

Bender: That plot makes perfect sense, wink wink.

Dr. Zoidberg: Bender, you said wink wink out loud.

Bender: No I didn't, raise middle finger.

Ithink the episode was ok, but it lacked veriety when it came to characters, and it seemed to have a single plot line (apart from what was happening to Fry and Lela).
For me one of the things that makes this show great is the fact that it usualy has at least 2 different storylines which come together at the end, but this one just followed the same one all the way through.
Still was ok, just not the as funny as the others for me.

I thought I was going to hate this since this one of the most underrated episodes ever, but now I regret what I said before. Even though this isn't the best It's still pretty good. I cracked up on how bad The Magnificent 3 was and the ending of that movie was hilarious (and mean since Calculon was only dissapointed when Harold died but became really sad when He became the president.) What Harold Zoid did at the end was sweet and Calculon was a good sport remembering how much a Harold Zoid fan he was and chose not to kill him.

I've got to say, while I gave this'n a five, it wouldn't be near as great without Dr. Zoidberg! [cue "Woop, woop, woop, woop, woop, woop, woop, woop! Hooray!"] As a filmmaker, I appreciated satire about the industry (which is not uncommon), and as a Zoidberg fan, I appreciated the constant cracks at both his constant state of poverty and how the other characters dislike him.
HAROLD ZOID: A more classic movie plot there isn't! A son who does not want to follow in his father's business, and that business is being President of Earth, no less! The son, as it happens is, Vice President.
BENDER: That plot makes perfect sense. Wink, wink!
ZOIDBERG: Bender, you said, "Wink, wink!" out loud!
BENDER: No, I didn't! Raise middle finger.
A more classic Futurama episode there isn't!

the whole movie plot was really good. Zoidberg's part wasn't as consistently hilarious as he usually is, since he had to play the part of a main character for this one. His interaction with Harold Zoid was great, though. Harold Zoid, in general, was BIZZARRE! You never really get to figure him out in this episode. I know there's the thing of washed out silent actor, but his behavior is still hilarious, since it is so non-sensical (" *squirt* Dear rich doctor nephew...")

A bad Futurama ep is better than almost anything else... and this was not a great episode.

The c-story, with Fry and Leela in the tar pit, feels tacked on. Two weeks in a tar pit because Leela didn't want to pay $2? Hmmm.

Zoidberg is kind of a tough charecter to write an episode around because he is, basically, irritating, poor and stupid. So, um, in that sense I applaud the writer(s) for giving it a go. Again, in the end, it wasn't horrible. Just not very polished.

i can't say i'm crazy about Fry and Leela in the tar pits, but it does make the rest of the material funnier. its full of such old, old jokes. anything with Zoidberg feels like a WC Fields film, and the addition of Harold Zoid makes it that much better.

I don't know what to say. the movie way awesome, just up to the Simpsons standards and i liked the plot about Zoidburg and his uncle Zoid and i also enjoye the short film with him chopping that guy's head off1 classic!

But, it did suffer from a lack of a sustainable B and C story. It was a bit pointless. In "Time Keeps on Slippin'", Bender's B story was a good concept and well executed. But, this one was only used in the 1st/2nd act and needed to be explored even more. the C story with Fry and Leela wasn't even needed at all. If they hadn't gone to hollywood, it would've been ok

overall, a 3 is needed here. I hope you agree with my views

Zoidburg should not be a character. This episode proves it. He is more of a prop if you will, only because he should be made fun of. The main problem is that the poor joke was the central theme of Zoidburg's character in this episode instead of him being a loser and a bad doctor like in the "Why Must I Be A Crustacean in Love?" episode. Next too little Fry, how can you give the main character of the series only 3 or 4 lines? Overall I bared through it for Fry and Bender.

This episode's plot is fairly dull and it's a shame to see a completely different Hollywood to the one established in The Cryonic Woman -Futurama's continuity is normally better than that.

Certainly an underwhelming premise considering the show's setting, but I've seen worse episodes. At least Zoidberg was pretty amusing in this one, which kept it from being abysmally bad. Overall, decent execution considering how bad it could have been.

It's the weakest of the Zoidberg driven episodes (clich plot, dodgy ending, un-necessary tedious subplot about Fry and Leela getting stuck in tar), but That's Lobstertainment has some individually extremely funny moments that save it and make it one I enjoy re-watching. Stuff like Zoidberg's cringeworthy attempt at stand-up, and writing a letter to his uncle in "my own ink", Bender becoming Calculon's personal boiler and Calculon rejecting a script because he didn't like the font.
