I thought it was a pretty good episode. The funniest parts I thought were the chase scene and zoidberg and the beads he coughed up

Beck was a cool guest star and it brought forth the usual laughs here and there, but this episode was not nearly as good as the best episodes in Season 3 ("Parasites Lost", "Amazon Women...", etc.)

Meh. First of all, I LOVE Beck, but he's the only reason I liked this episode at all. Fry's van was groovy and so was Zoidberg's ability to cough up beautiful gems, but I just couldn't sit right with Leela and Farnsworth wanting to go along for the trip. I dunno, some parts just seemed a little out of character. But that's just me..

This is what Futurama is all about. Lots of great character development for Bender, plenty of great gags ("smells like something died in the walls"). The bit with Silon & Garfunkel singing on stage was hilarious.

I've just seen this episode for the first time ever today. It was the only episode that I'd previously missed on several occasions. I can't believe so many people here thought that this is one of Futurama's best episodes, hense me giving it a 2 instead of a 3.

Overall it was poor, it was an ok episode but by Futurama standards it sunk to a new type of low. I don't really know who Beck is but I didn't like the way the whole episode revolved around kissing his ass as a celebrity appearance. As someone has already stated, this episode could just have easily happened without a futuristic setting.

Somehow this episode had a different atmosphere to what I'm used to, it wasn't too wacky or stupid which was a plus but it didn't seem normal either. Beck's music was quite interesting, I quite liked it but would there realistically be a whole 60s type movement in the year 3001?

I preferred this episode to "Thats Lobstertainment" which is in my opinion the worst. Hank Azaria as Harold Zoid goes down in history as the worst guest star on Futurama. It wasn't as good as "I Dated A Robot", which also featured heavily in the guest star department. I felt Lucy Liu was one of the better guest stars because she played her head and the Lucy Liubot and the plot was much more relevant to the future.

I wouldn't say that "Bendin' in the Wind" is dreadful; it's still reasonable overall and has some good moments. It was cool when Bender had the little arms and chanted, "Go Bender, go Bender" and I like the action sequence near the end with the VW Camper with Beck chasing it. The Simpsons has had some much worse episodes but unfortunately this reminded me of The Simpsons decline in quality.

A fine episode, most notable for the slick subplot in which Fry, Leela, Amy and Dr Zoidberg travel around America in a pollution-inducing hippy RV. Loved the tye dye t shirts, the hot dog sequence and the Horrible Gelatinous Blob's type-chart.

The main story is boosted no end by the presence of Beck, who really made me laugh, which was impressive as I don't really listen to his music very much and know hardly anything about him. It all spiralled to a great climax; the car chase sequence was inspired, particularly the cameo of a giant caterpillar in China Town.

I was a little freaked out by Bender's dancing all the same. The way he moved on stage was bizarre...

I agree with Otis, there was much missing in this episode. Yet, I know who Beck is, but Otis is right about that kissing his celebrity-ass. I read again much about 'best episode ever' here, but I come to think this is only one stupid guy, using different computers or stuff, who can't sleep with the thought of Futurama being cancelled... Hey wake up man, it was good some times, we had many good laughs, but it has reached its zenith some time ago. This episode is nearly as much crap as 'Lobstertainment'...

Well, I was downloading this episode so I thought I'd see what people thought of it. Needless to say when I saw the rating in the 70% area I wasn't most pleased.

But having now watched it, I can certainly say this is one of the best Futurama episodes ever!

I agree that the idea of the van trip was a bit off, but Beck was fantastic and he and Bender MADE this episode. Hilarious, start to end.

Fantastic, it certainly gets 5 points.

I can't believe this episode made it through production...Beck is unquestionably the most dumbfounding success story of my lifetime: unique or not, he gurgles choad guacamole. There are points in the show where the writers try to rip on him, but it looks like they wussed out of really tearing into him; probably because of his control over the forces of evil.

If that isnt enough to rate this episode lower than Canada, Bender's song at the end (probably writeen by Beck - if not then CERTAINLY influenced by him) sets the standard as the absolute worst song ever recorded. Just thinking about it makes me want to light my face on fire in hopes that my deafening screams will put a more melodic and better written tune in my head.

Every episode I specifically LIKE are the ones no one else does.

The Cylin Garfunkel scene rules, the Becktionary rules, and certainly Bender's song itself rules.

"Ahhhh- I'm like Christina Agulara singing in Spanish!"

"That song doesn't usually go on that long, but we got into a serious "thing", and then I forgot how it ended..."

"Goodbye, get well soon! Oh. Well, Goodbye."

one of my favorite episodes ever.. the whole bender-being-folksinger-plot is just one of the greatest and weirdest things i've ever encountered on television! go bender!

although i really am a fan of beck, i must admit this episode somewhat was too friendly to his character..

the best parts in my opinion are simon & garfunkel, the bong in the van and benders song where he starts moving - especially this "throw your hands in the air/wave 'em like you don't care"-line and his movements! ahh, i love it.

There were a few funny parts but this episode wasn't great. There was too much kissing up to Beck (i.e. the Becktionary). This ep didn't have enough sci-fi.

Good parts: Bender's songs, the animation, and a few jokes. That's it.

Futurama should have sci-fi in at least a little bit of the episode, not be retro. Luckily there aren't a lot of episodes like this.

This is definitely one of the more underrated episodes. Not a great episode, but a fun one. Great use of the charecters. Tons of jokes. And some great lines.

Especially:
Bender -- "Oh no! I forgot this is a hover bridge!"
Leela -- "And I forgot this isn't a hover car!"
Fry -- "Is any of that a problem?"
Zoidberg -- "Not if you have lived a life without regret! <screams like a little girl>"

Prof. -- "Where's the device that lets you speed or slow the passage of time?"
Fry -- "Under the seat."

Definitely underrated.

I noticed a number of reviews that didn't like this episode much at all, and many of them because they said they didn't really know who Beck was or anything about him, but that's one of the reasons you didn't find it funny, I'm sure, because a lot of the jokes in it revolved around stuff pertaining to Beck & his music, like the abridged Becktionary (from Bzooty to Whiskeyclone) or the joke about him not remembering what the song Devils Haircut was about, which, if you know anything about any of those things, was hilarious!! That's pretty much all I had to say.

Yeah, I can see why some people wouldn't like this episode as much if they didn't know anything about Beck. But there were plenty of other good non-Beck gags. Heck, I knew absolutley nothing about Beck aside from the fact that he's a musician when I first saw this episode, but that didn't keep me from enjoying it. It's still Futurama after all. In fact, it piqued my interest in Beck, and now I'm a huge fan of his music. Also, I know get all the Beck related jokes in the episode. Not everyone will appreciate how good this one is because some of the best material is regional. If you know the San Francisco Bay Area you'd understand the references to Bullitt, the spoof on GG Park concerts (e.g. Cylon and Garfunkel) , those insipid sea lions (OK, I actually like them.), etc.
Have you seen that Simpsons episode where they go to Japan? Half the jokes probably went over the heads of most viewers but it was so dense with material you were never stranded without a laugh. If "Bendin' in the Wind" had done the same I would have given it a 5.

The best part of this episode is when Zoidberg dyes all the clothes in the launderette. The characters are alle annoyed at first but then they think the tie-dye effect is cool. Zoidberg then delivers the greates line ever: Then it was on purpose! You're lucky to have Zoidberg as a friend.... but cross me and I'll turn on you like that! Aaaaaaeeeerrgh!!!

Hilarious. The rest of this episode is pretty funny too.

I can see why people said its up and down, the lestra chip bit and corpse in the fan joke really wasn't very funny and neither was the money melting and alien hicks, but it closes strong with the chase scene and Beck and Bender are hilarious. Zoidberg also had a few good lines.

I thought this was a pretty good episode overall. People who say that it was nothing more than a celebrity ass kissing episode don't know what an ass kissing episode is. Not many celebrities would take so many shots at their expense. Lines like "odelay is a real word, look in the Becktionnary" and "I use those all the time in my music" (refering to the irritating noise bender makes), and "It's kind of like my song 'Devil's Haircut'...wait, what was that song about?". This kind of irreverence was refreshing in this era of kissing hollywood's ass for a 10 second cameo.

I'm not a Beck fan...I had no idea he wasn't a Futurama original character/spoof of modern folky musicians...and I thought it was a hilarious episode. So many good lines...Bender's song...Cylon and Garfunkle...how could anyone hate this ep?

Bender was just incredible. "For the love of god will somebody kick his ass?!" "Go Bender! Go Bender" (waves little arms) "Oh, crap, a miracle!" And when Bender forgets himself and dances on stage, I love how he's suddenly MORE flexible than we've ever seen him be before! Priceless!

I loved the crew turning hippy in the van. But why do people think the Professor was with them? Neither he nor Hermes went along...just Fry, Leela, Amy, and Zoidberg (the young folk and the loser). I loved seeing a bit of Leela's "wild side" (we know she dropped out of school to bum around India for a few months, this isn't any different). Fry was a hoot, dragging the van home, wearing the corpse's headband...he looked pretty good in it, too. Heh.

I also think people confuse "Futurama kissing Beck's ass" with Bender kissing Beck's ass. But Bender's reaction to Beck is no different than his reaction to Elzar or Calculon, nyet? Totally in character for Bender.

My true rating for this would be a 4, because like "Future Stock" and "Pharaoh to Remember" it's funny without being quintessentially Futurama, but I'm offsetting the extraordinarily low scores. Has the Simpsons' guest-appearances-gone-awry just wounded everyone so badly that they can't look past a celebrity voice to see a heap'o great jokes and a great Bender tour-de-force? Meh.

Beck Hanson, the great Scientologist himself makes a very special guest appearence in this episode; and what a treat it is. Led Zeppelin, a San Fransisco van chase, and Zoidberg's hippie love beads all contribute to this most enjoyable of television programs. Bender's character is fleshed out in this episode some more as he comes to grip with his newly paralised body. This is how he ends up going on tour with Beck and he realizes his secret lifelong dream of becoming a folk singer. This plot does get a little tedious but keeps the story moving. The sub-plot is, as always, more entertaining. But both plots come together nicely and the third act is arguably the most entertaining. Overall, a great episode to watch high with friends, or alone with a guitar. Sexx laws will lead you to freedom.

I read through all of the ratings, and was surprised to find no outright reference to touring (following a band around the country), although # 90 really came close to it. Also, # 102 made some good references to some of the culture facts. Having seen several shows myself (never seen Beck, but saw 44 Grateful Dead shows, numerous Blues Traveler shows, and a few Phish shows), I found the humor of touring heads to be very accurate. I loved the olestra bit to begin with, again dead on. I saw more VW busses on tour than I could ever recall, but do remember one that pulled into the parking lot at Hampton Coliseum for a 3 day show, and they pulled the engine, fixed it, and put it back in while on the parking lot for 3 days, if that tells you some of the humor of this show. This show is my favorite, but this probably because it hits close to home, and it really was accurately funny on how things were on tour

If you're a Beck fan there is no way you can't not love this episode. Even if you're just a Futurama fan you can't not love this episode: Zoiberg at his most palatable, Bender at his most "Benderness" and even Fry, Amy and Leila with their limited appearances were as true to their characters as in any episode. the reason people don't like this episode is because those people don't know who beck is. alot of jokes were targeted at beck fans (the performance of "Where It's At" was a laugh fest for Beck Fans, also mocking his made-up words using the "Becktionary") but if you don't know who beck is, this episode isn't for you. they really do focus on beck a little too much, and the only person who beck talks to is bender.
