This is the best episode of anything when it comes to religious content. We all already know that Groening content is more religious than certain television crap (...Touched by an Angel), but this episode was a masterpiece.

The last line by God was so clever, I almost soiled my drawers. I found it to be an extremely well-written episode that actually carried a message (unlike last week's pessimistic "A Pharoah to Remember"). Although the episode was Bender-based like last week's, Fry and Leela's side story was funny -- especially once the monks got involved. Bender's conversation with God is now one of the classic moments in Futurama history.

Wow, that was suprisingly deep and made a daring statement. I'm sure some overly religious types will be praying for Matt Groening's soul all week long... but I for one loved it. MAN!! I can't believe they cancelled the show. They should move it to the Sci-Fi Chanel... Give it a better time slot at least... 7:00 on sunday sucks.

Wow!!!! Call me a believer. Faith restored. After the last two episodes, I was starting to wonder what I was fighting for. It has all come back so clearly. This was a jam-packed top-notch bit of television. Excellent work from everyone involved. I may come back and write more of a full review later on, but this was a definate higher moment for this series.

After two weeks of 'average' episodes, finally we get one that is very good. Bender is much better than last week's episode (i.e. not annoying).

Sure, there are jokes about religion, but were not as scathing as "A Pharaoh to remember" ("Free us from all thought and responsibility"). Even though it was not a gut-busting funny episode, it had a lot of heart to it, and a very good plot.

Overall, this episode is more along the lines of "Luck of the Fryish" with a good story and some good jokes.

I loved the banter between 'GOD' and Bender, funny stuff, and pretty much all of benders parts were funny ...

I noticed in the begining that Leela was humming to herself... curious... I wonder what she was so happy about?
And the space-pirots ('you know, pirots... in space.') last line was cool.
'too late I realize my children are my real treasures'

great eps.

Loved this episode. Bender's story was rich and different, Fry's and Leela's subplot was fun, lots and lots of punchlines I kept laughing about ("Maybe if I hug god enough he'll save us from the..." *BOOM!*, "Let us out! We cooked our shoes in the dryer and ate them! Now we're bored!", "You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless! You gotta hope even more, and cover up your ears and go "bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla!"). Ken Keeler is rapidly developing into my favourite writer (He wrote for 3 of my 5 favourite episodes, this one being one of them).

I thought this was one of the better episodes of the season. It was cool with the space pirate attack and then how Bender was accidentally launched into space. The only thing I don't get is when he got left behind in "Roswell That Ends Well," he seemed to enjoy the time to himself for the 1,000 years, but then when he was away from the group for a matter of minutes he became seriously depressed that he was by himself. Still the episode was good. I only hated how his micro-civilization died and then the ending was a little stale and like Leela said, "This is the most unlikely thing to happen," or something like that. Still I give the episode 4 points.

What can I say... great ep.. very good indeed..

leela was a bit dumber than usual though and fry wasn't as dumb as his character should be.. I think they are doing this deliberately!! :)

But seriously though, one of the best episodes of the season by far, "fear not oh metal lord... for we will be with you soon" LOL -"It is time to convert the unbelievers..." - "convert them?" - "To radioactive dust!"

Liked God.. but why didn't he know english before bender met him I wonder... :)

Wow, what a great episode. Classic moments include Bender destroying the piano, Fry in the mountain climing store, and Leela's great line, "This is, by a wide margin, the least likely thing that has ever happened."

There were really, no weak parts to speak of, and I liked the fact that they showed the Planet Express Ship as capable of defending itself.

Fantastic episode, and a great turnaround from last week's lame duck.

This episode holds up very well even after repeated viewing. Very solid work.

Compared to Faraoh this episode was a big improvement. Bender was Bender. Lazy, selfish, alcoholic and yet with the soft side we know he has (even though he would never admit it). Benders travel through space was nice (and with some great visuals). The carving of the Voyager (or is it Pioneer?) picture, complete with Benders personal touch, was a way better show of Benders love for himself than anything last week. The Shrimpies was a great idea (if a bit remiscent of a THOH ep.) and Benders godship was hillarious. The commandment was great, if predictable. "God Needs Booze" indeed. And all Benders "miracles", pure fun. "That was a practice-miracle." "When you're writing the Bible you might wanna omit that last miracle." The reast of the Shrimpies part was equally good. Great stuff.

Fry and Leela's part of this was pretty solid too. Fry's search for a way to contact Bender was neat. The fortune telling machine was funny (has it been in another episode?) The trip to Himalaya was nice. "Well you obviously won't listen to reason, so I guess I'll listen to idioticness and come with you."

Okay, short parts I like: The battle at the start, and the PE ships weaponry. Leela humming, that was adorable. All scenes in the monastary. The monks, especially their leader. "I’ve never meet a holy man I couldn’t club."

Leelas reaction to the monks being pacifists, "Get in the laundry room or I'll kick your butt!! This is the worst crazy sect I have ever been in." (Nice to see Leela back in her take-no-crap, butt-kicking mode)

Benders talks with "God". The line "God" mentions a couple of times "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all". The banter between these two was pretty snappy. "I was god once. Yes, I saw that. You were doing alright until everybody died." LOL

Okay, wrapping up. Great episode. Top-3 with Roswell and Homeplanet of the season so far. 5 points it is (more like 4.5, but I'll be nice)

Hey, great episode. Some guy earlier said that this episode had more to do with politics than religion. Well, he might be right. God's line about people not knowing you've done anything if you've done things right echoes some saying by an ancient Chinese guy (I think it was Lao-Tzu, or something like that). He wrote about how the best kind of government was the kind that, when it did something, the people would proclaim, "Great, we did it all by ourselves."

The law of Physics? They don't use the law of Physics at all that's the trick because they don't know the laws or they know that most of what happens in the series is simple crap regarding the 'LAWS'. Bender drifting through space and little beings living on his butt? That's nonsense because there's no gravity because Bender has no gravity and so on... Stupid episode but it was only a matter of time that the GOD-question emerges in Futurama...

I haven't been more touched by a Futurama episode ever, actually. What a terrificly complete episode, it brought out a side of Bender that is very strong but usually underwritten, and that is his overwhelming compassion (sometimes...) although he is quite evil. It may chalk up as my favorite episode, and there were some real fantastic scenes, especially the God conversations and the usual Fry-Leela chemistry. Wonderful episode. Probably the best of the season, I'd say.

Another superb episode, I keep thinking about those gorgeous visuals of nebulas, and the other cool aesthetics that space had. Considering space is just a boring void, they sure made it look beautiful, another excellent job by the Futurama team. I also liked seeing Bender 3D animated during a large part of this episode, while drifting through space.

It stated out really fast, the space pirates were cool, they didn’t waste any time. This episode just got better and better as Bender drifted through space. Seeing Bender as a God, and all the dilemmas, decisions and issues involved were perfect. Some really humorous. Clever writing, highly enjoyable. All the mistakes and problems he faced were accurate to real life, but on a smaller scale.

The subplot with Fry and Leela trying to find Bender helped give this episode added humour, and enlightened us from Bender responsibility as a God. It was nice to see the smellescope getting some more use, even though it didn’t help. The monks were pretty funny too, this is a classic episode, one of, if not thee best Bender episode to date. I’m probably one of the only people to enjoy both ‘A Pharaoh To Remember’, and ‘Godfellas’, although I definitely prefer ‘Godfellas’ because it had more substance and depth.

An amazing episode...it ranks right up there with 'Luck of the Fryish' and 'Time Keeps On Slipping' as 'Futurama's' best.

The jokes concerning the tiny civilisation were great, and the monks were also a blessing, but nothing was more mesmorising than Bender's meeting with God - that was the highlight of not only this episode, but also this season to date.

One of the things which made this episode so poignent and powerful is God's last line, which was amazingly thought-provoking. This episode is one of those very special but very rare (in any TV show) ones which manage not only to be brilliantly funny, but also spiritually uplifting and at the same time a little sad.

I finally managed to watch this one properly this morning, so I can review it at last.

I would say that it's probably one of the better season 4 episodes (i.e. one of the best out of a bad bunch).. I think I'd probably rank it second to 'Buggalo', which I saw again this morning.

The main thing that let 'Godfellas' down was the lack of good jokes. Some things made me smile, but I didn't laugh out loud at all. On the plus side, though, there were much less really bad jokes than usual, probably because of the lack of Zoidberg (although the 'pirates.. from space!' was just as terrible as 'invaders.. from space!' from AOI2).

The idea for the story was excellet, although I think it could have been pulled off a bit better. In my opinion, some of the Bender parts seemed to drag on too long, and only really got interesting once the atomic war started. "How am I supposed to hear prayers coming out of my ass?" was a good line, and the nukes tickling him was funny. The 'God' bit was well written and thought provoking, although I have to admit my stupidity at not really understanding the significance of 'God's' wise saying at the end.

The Fry and Leela story, I thought, was much better. The Amalgamated Church was a good idea, and it was great seeing the much-underused fortune telling machine back again. "What am I, psychic?" The best part, though, was at the monastery. Fry burping and spitting before entering the holy building, the idea that God is inside your heart, and the monks in general were all good.

One stand out thing in 'Godfellas' was the graphics. The starry backgrounds Bender floats past, 'God', and even the robot pirates were all superbly designed, and the community on Bender's chest was surprisingly detailed.

Overall, it wasn't a bad episode, but it couldn't be compared to a lot of the earlier ones, which I why I couldn't give it any more than 3.5 out of 10.

It DID have no strong plot, but nonetheless this episode is great! This was the first time i thought: Man John DiMaggio is an awesome voice actor! I usually think Billy West is the most amazing actor in the series, but here John is giving him a run! Even the lines that weren't jokes were read exeptionally great. Made Bender a Character more than he had been before ...
and the the whole conversation with "God", then the ending ... great way of making a point without making a point at all (great God voice 2, btw). If they'd done it right, they could've made the whole episode with Bender just floating in Space.

I personally am not a fan of "death humor," which is mainly what this episode is about, a race of Shrimpians being wiped out by Bender's decisions. Although there were a lot of funny things.

Oh yeah, and while putting attention into the laws of some physics, they completely ignored other ones, like the fact that you can't make noise in space because there's no air to transmit the sound waves. The shrimpians might have evolved to not need oxygen to breathe, so I don't count that as an error.

Not acually very funny, but VERY thought provoking. God was excellent, i'm glad that he wasn't turned into the sort of parody 'casual dress and sandals' chap. This would be a 4, but Bender was unusually sentimental, actually upset whenever he hurt one of the small guys. bit out of character really.

Best lines:

Bender:'Oh no, an asteroid field! In the vacuum of space even a tiny speck of dust could burn its way through my head causing (ssspchkk!) slight pain.'

Bender:(as nuclear explosions cover his body)'Aaagh! they're destroying themselves! aww... he hehehehehe! that tickles! Hahahaha!'

This episode titled "godfellas" is one of my favourite episodes. It is funny all the way through and about my
3rd favourite episode. ( My favourite is "roswell that ends well", and my second favourite is "war is the h
word"). Although I have only ever seen about 12 episodes after whenever i go to shops season 1 and 2 are
never there and I am not allowed to buy anything off the internet. So I guess that I will not be able to see
anymore episodes which is annoying because futurama is my second favourite tv show. It is nearly as good
as south park which is my favourite show. The funny parts of "godfellas" include when Bender is in space,
funny things happen to him all through the time he is in space. Dr.Zoidberg is funny whenever he is shown
on the show. I would give this episode an A+ because of its humour and story. So keep up the good work
with making futurama and hopefully you will make a movie on this before you make one of the simpsons
because this is way better than the simpsons even though I love the simpsons and watch it all the time.
That proves that futurama rules! Because there isn't a place to review the simpsons, i don't think there is.
I'll write some of my favourite episodes of it in order from 1 to 5. My favourite episode would be "film
festival" because after seeing stuff on it i can't stop laughing. My second favourite episode would be "Lisa
gets an A", because it's funny how Homer cooks the lobster and Ralph being smart on the computer. My
third favourite episode would be "this little wiggy", because I love how the rocket hits Mr.Burns and he says
"Smithers, there's a rocket in my pocket", and Smithers says "I gathered". My 4th favourite episode is that
one thats called something like "simpsoncalafragilisticexpiala(annoyed grunt)cious" or it's called something
like that if you know the episode that I am talking about. That episode has heaps of great songs and the
simpsons is my favourite music show. Every song is good, my favourite song is probably the one at the end
of "bart after dark". So well done Alf Clausen on making great music. But I only have the cd of songs in the
key of springfield because the shops don't sell them. My 5th favourite episode would be "bart star", where
Bart plays football and when Marge asks for a cup is funny. But I don't really like the character Marge that
much and if I made the show Homer would marry that lady from the episode "colonel Homer". He should
dump Marge because her voice is weird. My favourite season would be season 8 because all the episodes
are brilliant. I'm sorry that I have gotten a bit out of the subject of futurama. So I better go. Thanks for
reading this. Futurama, South Park and the simpsons=me watching tv all day.

It was fairly good. On reflection I thought it did a good job with the idea that you wouldn't want God micromanaging your life or completely ignoring you. Fairly okay theology, not really that offensive if you think on it. At the same time it had some pretty funny stuff. Like the gypsy saying

"what am I psychic? oh uhh I mean yes they will help you."

And some of Bender's interactions with the little dudes was funny.

His kindness was maybe a bit out of character, but he's kind of shown before he has a soft side if no one is watching. Like with the penguins. As far as he knew no one could possibly see his actions but them from then on. Even at that his first goal was exploitation. However having a civilization literally live on you, and potentially be your only company from then on, could maybe make you care about them. (If you'd rather just seek purely selfish motives for him though, them all dying ended his supply of beer and brown nosers)

There's one thing I'll add, I don't really think that thing was God. It never really said it was, it just kept saying "It's possible." I kind of think it was just a Galaxy sized supercomputer. Well see ya!

I enjoy just about every episode of Futurama, but this one really stood out for me. I suppose it's because I like its humorous but still thoughtful treatment of Very Serious Matters. I know that some bash this episode as making fun of God, but I don't think that's it at all. I think this episode is more about poking good-natured fun at the silly things some people do in the name of God. I fully believe that God has a sense of humor(anything that created the human race would pretty much have to) and would probably get a kick out of this episode. I also adore God's line at the end, because I think it sums up the whole point.

"When you do something right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."

God: Yes, i saw you. You were doing fine until everyone died.

Monk: We've cooked our shoes in the dryer and ate them! Now we're bored!

Leela: We were going full speed when we fired him. We'll never catch up.
Fry: Not even if we rubbed cheetah blood on the ship?

God: If you do things right, then no one can be sure you did anything at all...

This is certainly not something that I usually say when I'm referring to a television show, but this is a really intelligent episode. I like how this episode managed to mix both humor and moral themes without becoming either self-indulgent, boring or totally confused. Unlike the severly messy "A Pharaoh To Remember", Bender manages to acheive a bit of sensibility again in here. He truly was great and hilarious as the God of the small alien creatures.

The subplot underneath Bender's deity reign in space was great as well. It contains one of my all time favorite Futurama quotes ("You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless! You gotta hope even more and cover your ears and go "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah!") and it had some great moments, such as the encounter with the monks. I especially liked Bender's encounter with God in the end, as I feel it broadcasts one of the most believable messages that can be delivered about religion as a whole and this isn't something which you get to see in many TV shows. The ending was well thought of and smart, to boot. Terrific episode.

The single best Futurama episode. Bender's travels in space take numerous hillarious turns. From the "Oooh ostentatious" comment when he pulls out a candleabra to playing god over the little people who evolve on his stomach.
The subplot of Leela and Fry trying to use the monk's telescope to find him adds to the humor as the monks eat their sneakers when locked in the laundry room.
Absolutly the best line ever "That's not torpedo three, that's not torpedo three at all."

I think the best episode ever... Mr Groenig show us many many times (with Futurama and Simpsons) that episodes that he write together with his collaborators, are rich of details and thin quotations. With this episode we have also got that Bender knows perfecly the lows of the motion! More astonishing was the concept of God both in the Bender and the "galaxy-universe binary talking" point of view. What can I add if: "When you do things right, people won't be sure that you've done anithing at all"

This episode was classic Futurama. Funny one-liners, a great sub-plot (Fry & Leela searching for Bender), emotional depth and a tone that boarders on preachy. Because of the future setting, Futurama always seems to have an interesting perspective on religion & faith. Keeler takes a Secular Humanistic approach when the theme is stated: 'When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all'. It seems that everyone is responsible for his or her own destiny. How tolerant. The references in this episode were varied but always up to the standard we are used to when watching an intelligent show like Futurama. Classical music, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Bible(Malachi) were all used effectivaly. Probably the most rewarding of Bender centred episodes, his character develoupment was deepening. so pour a glass of red, put your feet up, and enjoy an enlightening experiance.

This is my favorite Futurama episode and got me back into watching this series. The plot was perfect and the writing is excellent.

Once Bender & God starting having the conversation between each other had me loving it, I was with my two homies and we're just sitting there enthralled with the idea of "God".

I'm an atheist, but this conception of God had me thinking, it made logical sense that's what God could be, I never took the representation of God as male/female (though the voice was male, haha :P ladies).

God's attitude was funny and had a smile on his face, once he sent Bender back after hearing Fry, that's what had me. The Monks were stuck in the lab and Fry saying, "There God will help them out." And Bender goes off bitching about how God won't help you out with anything to follow it up with the last line in the show was pure brilliance.

Honestly the writer should've got some kind of reconigition reward, he wrote a beautiful script that actually had a lot of people at the end thinking about that last line.

Between this episode and Fry's dog cloning episode, Futurama is top notch programming and is recommended for everyone. :)

Of all the different ideas, theories and takes on the idea of a God, it's THIS one that stays with me most. I don't believe in God, but the way He is presented in this episode is genius. I find the idea of a God like this comforting, since it seems, to me, to make the most sense. The last line - and the preceding Bender line which underlines it - had me thinking for quite a while afterwards. That the show could do this AND be very funny is wonderful, and the Fry/Leela/monks part complemented the more thoughtful Bender / God sections perfectly. Only 'The Sting' stops this from being my favourite episode.
