Bender and Professor Farnsworth decipher something far more rewarding for Leela, as Fry helps her discover some long-lost secrets about her background, including what happened to her parents.

I'm not a big Leela fan, so I didn't like this episode too much. While plot development is good, none of it really interested me very much becuase -as I said- I don't find Leela that interesting. The episode had a good amount of jokes, but they weren't too funny. This isn't nearly as good as other plotty episodes like "Luck of the Fryish".

Although not a terrible episode by any means, it certainly wasn't the best.
The story focused around Leela being human after all, which is a shame. I thought her alien background would make for some great stories.
Still, some of the classic subtle humor was evident, and overall made for some great television.
Bender had some classic one-liners that were hilarious as usual.
The professors "glow-in-the-dark nose making machine" was certainly the funniest thing I have seen for quite some time.

Last week's was just about perfect: a little Zoiberg, a little Amy, romance, adventure, movie parody, animal torture, a guest star playing herself, and a guest star playing another character.

This one threw its big shocker out in the open in the first six minutes, then left us spending the rest of the episode waiting for Leela to catch up (Guh!), THEN left the episode's new "issue"--Leela's still the only one of them that gets to go aboveground--untouched for a later ep.

Leela went completely out of character, the muties suddenly had to rely on balloons to reach the surface (!?!), and the most of the jokes were awful. Lord knows they can't ALL be winners, but if it weren't for Fry's bumbling dialogue and the occasional gross-out joke, this one would've been worse than the Harold Zoid ep.

P.S. Leela's parents are mutants. From ANOTHER WORLD!! Dum-dum-DUMMM!

Liked it quite some, not top notch, not just medium. Still I think they should've kept this ep for like the 3rd last of the series or so. I sort of think they'll ignore her parents in future episodes (in the bunch of 3ACVX for sure). What's this with FOX changing the order all the time for no coherent reason anyway ?
Another geeky joke added, well done! (The "There is no way of knowing how long it will take. It can take an hour or a million years." DING!)

Good jokes included, like it

"Like all of us, especially him!"

This episode had less on the humor and more on a touching full story arc, although it was dissapointing that the whole plot was given away at the very beginning.

I must say, it wasn't the funniest episode I've ever seen-- I didn't really get anything past the toxic waste cleanup. But seeing as it was clearly meant to be one of those Major Revelation Episodes, I think that's fairly forgivable. (Boy, look at this. The roles are reversed. Everybody else is ragging on it because it wasn't funny, and Mr. Only-Wants-Humor thought it was decent. This hiatus business is really taking its toll on us.)

Oh, by the way, I notice us old-schoolers are ranking it higher, and I think I can guess why. Way back in Season 2, "I Second That Emotion", someone on the Outlet message boards, forget who, brought up a point that he/she could see 2 characters in a group picture that kinda looked like Leela's parents, and speculated on Leela's possibly being a mutant. Whoever you are, either Groening saw the post and thought "That's a heck of an idea", or you are freaking psychic, because those 2 in the group shot and Leela's parents look one hell of a lot like each other.

To paraphrase Lrr of Omicron Persei 8:

"This new plot twist angers and confuses us. Leela won our hearts as a single-eyed alien, and a single-eyed alien shall she remain!"

I immediately had the same idea that Squishy gave above - Leela's parents *are* mutants, so the sludge wouldn't change any of them, but they're alien mutants. They just don't know it, because they themselves were left on Earth shortly after being born.

(I've gotta disagree with you on Harold Zoid though, Squishy. I *love* that episode.)

I didn't think I would like this one. I'm not a big leela fan, but I found it very funny and entertaining. The professors machine was hilarius. "what?? it can do other things, why shouldn't it??!!" The way it produced hundreds of gallons of toxic waste.
Bender being the disposal guy was great too, stuffing that whale down there. And WOW I never thought leela was a mutant, always thought she was from another planet.

Decent episode. I personally laughed at most of the jokes. Up until the end I was thinking that Leela is not really a mutant there were just aliens living in the sewer. Did anyone catch what the letter from Leela's mother actually said?

I'm sorry but after the ending of this episode I could not help but give it a 5. It had more heart then Tongue and cheek unlike many previous episodes. However it is still a gem. In all honesty I did not like the fact that Leela was only a mutant but hey no one is perfect. Oh by the way Erik the name of the song is “Baby Love Child” by Pizzicato Five.

The only disappointing thing was the attitude her parents had. Theu'd rather die than tell their daughter that they were mutants.

Now, that I've thought about it. She's still special because she's the only mutant to have a surface life. There are tons of aliens living on Earth, and it would be interesting to see how the world reacts when they learn that Leela is a mutant (alien or not)

I, for one, am glad we finally found out the truth about leela's parents, because I was sick of her questions :)

No, but really, I liked this episode, even though it wasn't totally a laughfest. I'm such a big fan of futurama that I just love watching it. Even if it tends to be story heavy, I'll always be a big fan.

I liked the Harold Zoid one too, but mostly for the "All My Circuits" parts :) I'm a big Calculon fan if you can't tell.

Oh, this episode was far from good. It really wasn't good at all, and it didn't have the laughs that Futurama usually has. But, this episode merits a 3, because of the character developement for Leela. Otherwise, it would be just a 1. Average episode.

This is my new fav ep. I adored it.Ive already seen it 5 times through and its only Monday. The song at the end was gorgeous and i've already dled it from KaZaa. I know a lot of people are complaining that it wasn't funny, but so what? a little emotion is a good thing and i did actually laugh a few times so it wasn't like it was all somber throughout the whole thing. I hope they bring her parents back at one point or another. i know they probably won't but it would be nice all the same.

I think the series has its full momentum this season (tragically, I guess it turns out), and this episode was no exception.

BTW, the song at the end was "Groove Love Child" by Pizzicato Five. Been listening to them for years, and it was very cool of the Futurama team to choose such an obscure but fitting track. =]

Ok I have watched the episode again. My opinion has changed. The episode was kind of uneven, there were some real strong points and some negative. First the negative, the humor was a little flatter then usual, Luck of the Fryish had strong humor with the emotion. Some of the jokes this time just didn't work (the Balloon, the father's line before he left Leela, some others) Also the narrative could have been done in a more powerful way. Leela's parents shouldn't have appeared after the first act, ruins some of the surprise later in the ep. Also the flashback seemed to be out of place, it would have made more sense right after Fry took off the hoods, the only problem was the time between the two flashbacks might be too small. Now the good. There was some really creative camera angles, especially when Leela was chasing after her parents. Small details in the background in the sewer, the zoom down from above, and the amazing ripple effect in the toxic waste. The returning mutants had good scenes, good additions of the leg mutant who will probably appear again. Leelas parents didnt have a lot of screen time now have interesting psudo-Jewish personalities; hopefully they will become minor reoccurring characters (like Hermes wife or Scruffy) The voice acting Katey Sagal did a great job, was surprised how emotional she got was near the end.

Some quick notes
Thought the Song sounded a little like JPOP

Hey good episode, Story heavy yea, but thats the bueaty of the show. The dynamics of the Charachters, the fact that Leela(or anyone for that matter) can change and grow as a charachter. That is what makes this show so much better than 90% of the other crap that gets put on tv.

Much agreed with the previous post. Character development and stories that actually move forward with plot and purpose are all too quickly choked out reality Tv and, to quote Fry, "the genre, World's blankiest blanks". This episode was not as zinger heavy as others, but still managed to be reasonably funny while providing a huge insight into one of the key characters. Great job!

Am I the ONLY fan creeped out by the final shot? Leela's parents live in her WALLS. They don't talk to her, but they come out at night and stroke her head. That's SICK. (I'm assuming they've sedated Nibbler somehow; he'd chew 'em up in a second if they tried to lay a tentacle on her. Where IS he, anyway?) The only way the final shot could be worse is if it takes place AFTER the grand revelation, and they're still monitoring her life from the grates. Clue up, Leela's parents: cell phones. That way your daughter doesn't have to worry about Mom and Dad watching her while she's on the crapper or making another genital-related mistake like Fry/Zap/Kevin/Bryan/Scruffy/whomever. You give your adult daughter less privacy than an infant has.

I liked it. I like Leela even though a lot of people don't, and I like the idea of her not being some exotic alien but rather a lowly mutant. That grounds her character more. And I'm a Leela/Fry shipper too, so I loved the cute look on Fry's face at the end :)

OK, I saw this on it's original airing, then immediately watched it again. This is how I avoid the painful experience known as King of the Hill. Then, I found the song played at the end (Pizzicato 5) in usenet. I got more hooked on the song (it had lingered in my head after two viewings) and ended up watching the ep a couple more times.
Now I am ready to pass judgement. Yes, it would have been nice if the parent-origin foreshadowing wasn't dropped into the ep so early as the end of the first act. Fine, so what. No real damage done. Personally, I liked how the sub-plots were woven once Fry/Leela got separated. The professor's machine is a gas. Especially the 'ding' part. Bender's Honest Waste Disposal was a gas. C'mon. Who can't bust a gut when he stuffs the whale down the sewer? I feel the entire episode leads up to the emotional video montage at the end with Pizzicato 5. That tugs at me every time I see it. Overall, this ain't the funniest ep, but who cares. It has so much more to offer.
I must admit that I am becoming EXTREMEMY biased because a few weeks ago, I started a 'complete series marathon'. I am almost done and my opinion of the show has changed entirely. At first, I thought of it merely as my favorite show still on the air. Now, I can hardly stand the thought of it's impending doom at the hands of FOX. It is THE BEST television to come out of the mill in many years. The only thing more original than Futurama was the live-action Tick. The only thought I have to console me is 'at least Daria got to run for 5 seasons of excellence, so I'll enjoy every seconds of Futurama that gets produced'. Futurama is a fantastic show. It works on so many levels. Geek humor. Modern (aka, not tired like the Simpsons) humor. Science-fiction reference/tribute heaven. Video game reference/tribute heaven. I connect with this show on a deep personal level. And so do millions of others. I have grown to love the 'non-favored' characters more. I'm telling you, one notices so much more when watching every episode, in sequence, in a month. If you have 'em. Do it. If not, get them and do it. You will thank yourself for basking in David X. Cohen's efforts rather than drivel such as 'The Glutton Bowl'.

And enter the Leelaholics ;)

I loved this episode. Leela's "Fryish", and just as good as it's predecessor. Heartwarming, emotional and funny as h***, trademarks of Futurama that we all have come to love. If only FOX execs would watch episodes like this and Fryish, they'd come to their senses.
Although I would've prefered her to remain an alien, the mutant angle works surprisingly well too. The Leela museum (I wanna go there :)), the chase, Fry stopping Leela and the revelation of the truth about her heritage. Great writing, and great animation. The scene were Leela discovered the truth and hugged her parents was just as heartwarming and emotional as the ending of Fryish , and the way it was animated, amazing. The last segment, during the song, was nice, Leela was just the cutest of babies. :D

I kinda wished they'd saved this episode for a later season, maybe 7-8ish, but maybe they saw the writing on the wall. Leelas search for her homeplanet, and her people, was one of the most fascinating aspects about her character and they really didn't cash in on that. Only one episode, I think they could've made at least 3 or 4 more. Maybe leave little clues she could chase down, only to discover new clues and so on. They could even have used the mutant angle still, just make all the clues lead back to Earth. On the other hand, who is to say that it ends here. Leela and her parents could go on an epic journey in a future episode, to discover that they really are aliens. Maybe her parents came to Earth as small babies, the only surviviors of an alien spaceship that was destroyed in orbit, but I digress.

Things I like: The onelegged mutant (bring him back), "Honest Benders Waste Disposal" LOL, the nosemachine, that song "Baby Love Child" (it'll always remind me of Leela from now on), the highly toxic waste (kinda made me think about "Alien" ) and other stuff that eludes me now.

Some weird things: Is it me or was the drawing of Hermes really strange in the scene with the toxic waste-tasting?

Suming up: Great background info on Leela , secondbest episode of season 4 (Roswell is that more hillarious). I give it 5, I really wish I could give it 10 to up it's score a big chunck. (hey I am a Leelaholic, right ;)).

I'm not sure why people are complaining that it wasn't funny. How could it have been? A topic like this demands a serious treatment - one of Futurama's great aspects is that it is capable as both comedy and serious. It was the most touching piece of Television I have ever seen and credit must be given to the composer, Christopher Tyng, for his absolutely beautiful score, which I am not ashamed to say, had me in tears by the end. Low on comedy, but exceptionally high on quality - first rate Futurama.

Though this may make me sound like a tired nerd, this was probably the worst episode so far in Futurama. I don't care about Leela as a character, and the jokes were completely flat, some pointlss (such as the balloon.) The timing seemed off, as the big shocker was revealed in the first 5 minutes. Futurama as a whole is still excellent, but getting unnessessarily more dramatic, and the quality suffers when it does.

I thought this was a pretty good episode. I wasn't expecting Leela to be a mutant. That's pretty cool. I likie it better knowing she's a mutant then a one eyed alien from another planet. Maybe she could use the "I'm a mutant," excuse to get Zapp Brannigan off her back. Something I noticed in the episode was that when she saw the time line of her life in her parents house, there was a picture of her from the episode "Godfellas," which was supposed to have aired before this episode, but got postponed. She said, "Hey, this is when I dropped out and bummed around India for a while."

Overall a good episode, with a great plot, but unfortunately the execution left something to be desired:

- What is the point of the wall-hanging at the orphanarium? was there a joke here?

- Leela's suicide-dive into the radioactive waste didn't feel right. Why would she dive into waste when she thought she'd be mutated? Just because of a hunch? please. Come up with a better reason for your characters to dive a few hundred feet into waste please.

-Alot of the jokes fell flat or were out of place. The episode seemed confused as to whether it would be a drama or a comedy

-I can only compare it to Luck of the Fryish, which was better.

This episode has garnered way too much harsh criticism. It was one of those sentimental episodes that just didn't happen to be AS funny as "Luck of the Fryish", but it was funny and entertaining nonetheless. I thought this episode was not really that funny, though compared to most programs it was still gripping entainment. I even was slightly bored at points. However, the emotional and cute end was heart warming like some of the simpsons episodes. These sort of episodes help the public connect with the characters which is needed with futurama to draw in more audiences, especially with boring plain old Leela. Overall a really decent epsiodes, though differen to most. Also it included some of the best remarks by bender and farnsworth.

I love this episode, it's cool how in both "The Luck of the Fryrish" and "Leela's Homeworld", the secrets to their pasts lay underground. The animation was great, especially some of those camera angles and the lighting. The long shot chase scene with the muties tying to catch Leela looked awesome and reminded me of The Lion King. The story was engrossing even though the main secret was let out early, some really great Fry-Leela scenes and the humour was superb too.

Considering this is an emotional story driven episode I thought that the jokes were done brilliantly, the professor was ever funny and Benders get rich quick schemes helped lighten up the episode without getting mixed up with the emotional stuff. It was great to see the muties again and I enjoyed seeing more of were they lived. I'd say this episode was one of the best although not quite up to the standards of "The Luck of the Fryrish", some inconstancies and choppy flow let it down. Still an awesome episode that I'm glad they made early because it might never have been made otherwise.

I really wish I hadn't looked at the spoilers for this episode before I watched it. Before the US premiere, it never even occured to me that Leela was a mutant, and although it was kind of given away at the end of the first act, it still would have been a nice surprise.

Anyway, I don't think it was too bad an episode. I agree that there wasn't much humour in it, but I wouldn't say it was particularly duller than previous season four episodes up to now.

The toxic waste bit was good, and I liked the Professor's 'suspicious morons' line. :) Picking on that leg mutant was funny too. Apart from that, a lot of the other jokes fell flat, although compared to a lot of other episodes, it didn't seem like many were attempted.

This was definitely a story-led episode, which I usually tend to like, but there was just something about this one that made it a lot worse than 'Luck of the Fryrish' (although that IS possibly the best half-hour of television I've ever seen).

I thought the Bender sub-plot was pointless, and some parts dragged on too long, but on the plus side, it was great to see the mutants again. I really like the idea that Leela is a mutant, and although, like some people, I think the episode should have been aired nearer to the end, I suppose it's nice to have the 'relevation' episodes spaced out.

Before watching this episode I'd read that the last thirty seconds made beautiful TV, which I totally agree with. It's strange how the main plot stopped abruptly, though, after Leela found out about her parents.

Nice animation on Maurice's mouth, too. :)

Wow...this was an amazing episode which, like 'Luck of the Fryish', had me in tears at the end. The final moments were extremely touching, and once again 'Futurama' is able to move us like no other show has ever done. Personnally I find the twist that Leela is a mutant a lot more satisfactory than her being an alien. I love love loved this episode - it is certainly the best of Season 4. What else could I give it but 5?

First, let's get the gripes out of the way. The first half of the episode is disjointed, and giving away the identity of Leela's parents after a few minutes just for the sake of that "camera looks up towards the stars, then quickly down to the sewers" gag was a bad move.
So why is it one of the best episodes ever? Firstly, it has a number of funny moments, like Amy's response to Leela winning the award from the Orphanarium - "Your parents must be so proud!", and Hermes tasting the toxic waste. Secondly, Fry does something smart (guessing the origin of the 'alien' note) for the second consecutive episode.
But the true greatness of this episode is in the last few minutes: the flashback of Leela's parents leaving her by the Orphanarium; the moment when Fry reveals them to Leela, and the montage of clips of Leela's parents watching over her as she grows up.
FOX may cancel the series, but it's episodes like this that'll keep me watching the re-runs/DVDs for years to come.

Ok ok it was not the funniest episode ever, but that's not the point. They tried to unveil the secret of Leela and they did it very good. They took more care of the story, the humor is set into the story like tiny raindrops, like the scene in the end where Bender let it rain into the huggings, like the big computer making glowing noses... The ending is brilliant, some kind of close-up on Leelas hard life and her evercaring parents, bringing her some cakes through the toilet is soooo cute. This is good humour! Not like those episodes where they forced the laughs out...

so it wasn't the funniest episode ever. who cares? you all know as well as i do that futurama is such an amazing show that its qualities extend far beyond humor. its good to know this about leela and it was wonderful to see her so happy for once. maybe the little montage at the end was a little Cheese-ball Mcgee (and that song is really pretty), but it was really the only appropriate way to have wrapped up the episode. Not to mention the fact that it was great to see pictures of leela at space mardi gras and bumming around with a bunch of buddhists. and all the stuff she flushed down the toilet: a screenplay? speaks wonders of leela's inner state that she would have flushed her own screen play down the toilet. i'm a zoidberg fan myself, but any opportunity we have to learn more about the lives of these beloved friends of ours we should embrace and welcome with open arms.

This episode got a little bit longer than usual to get going, and I didn't really like the way Leela didn't get the picture when everyone else had!! However the ending was tear-jerkingly superb, and makes up for the rest. Funniest part - the reference to "Garfield's owner Jon's forehead!" being in the balloon.

Let's say I liked the episode, generally. Initially, I got perplex about the fact that Leela's parents weren't aliens but mutants. But, besides that, I always thought that Leela wouldn't never found her true parents as the serie goes on and, in any case, never in the sewers just under the office were she works! I think it was just the episode ending that changed my opinion as it was probably the most touching I ever seen. Maybe it was the song by Pizzicato Five, or the fact she found her parents after all...
By the way I gave this episode a "4/5" because it impressed me and donated me many emotions, but this it was quite confusing too. Many of us still remain of the idea that Leela is an alien. An "alien" intended as someone who came from another planet or a distant "world", "society" or whatever else. Let her be a mutant, ok, but a mutant from a distant world or whatever involves a complicated background in her past. The fact they put her parents in the sewers disgusted me as this idea basically stinks, it's too "poor" for "Futurama". Leela is more than just a mutant.. she's a cyclop. Moreover, I would have prefered to see the contents of such episode at the end of the whole serie or at the end of a movie rather than in a common 20 minute episode...

I loved the ending!!! A very heartfelt and classy montage of Leela's growing up and the "covert parenting" of mom & dad. It's nice to know that at least 1 orphan did not grow up alone. Heck, I liked it so much I can almost forgive Matt Groening for the tasteless death of Maude Flanders (Simpsons).

The background song was a perfect match. Others have identified it as "Baby Love Child" by the Japanese pop/dance group Pizzicato Five. The lyrics on the show don't match the lyrics you can find online...the online lyrics are probably a translation
of the original Japanese version. I think a remixed English version was used last night.

I liked learning more about Leela-- then again, I'm a fan of hers. Yes, the show is a comedy, but when the characters are made more human (or mutant as the case may be!), it allows me to identify more with them. (Then again, like Leela, I was adopted, and like Leela's mother, my college studies revolved around linguistics.) Did anyone catch the specific degree that Munda had in linguistics?

I'm so sorry, but Leela's character is that of a alein of unknown origin. She should never have found out where she is from, to do so is a destruction of character...

...what's more is that she turns out to simply be human. Ugh. I wish they would retract this episode with another that sets her back on track. Leela = alien, unknown homeworld, unknown species, forever alone.

This was more of a touching episode. There wasn't one great line that made the show funny, although Fry did have his moments. Wait, scratch that, moment. When the orphanarium guy said, "Well there is one thing that I forgot about, but I wouldn't want to waste your time." Fry's response was great, "That's impossible!! Because my time is worthless!" The ending really got to the heart and was the best part, like a lot of Futurama episodes. The clip show of all the times Leela's parents helped her and she didn't know, it was sad and uplifting at the same time, very few things can acheive that. A solid episode. Clamps gives it 3 out of 5.

Good episode. The emotional parts were done well but it would have been even better if we didn't see Leela's parents at the end of act one. Then the end would be more surprising and more emotional like in "The Luck of the Fryrish". There were only a few good jokes. My favorite was seeing the guy "Often Seen in the Background of News Spots" in the background of Leela's picture. The animation was good, especially the rain. This episode seemed unusually dark, maybe because they were underground a lot. Bender's subplot was kind of funny, but not great. At least it helped the main plot progress.

Unlike some other people, I'm glad we learned Leela's origin. They couldn't keep dragging that storyline on forever. But couldn't she be something besides a mutant? She was cool as an alien. Oh well. I guess the mutant thing makes sense, she looks too human to be an alien.

Anyway, great episode. It was low on jokes but had emotion, some humor, good animation, and it wrapped up a storyline. And I agree that the look Fry had at the end of the episode was very cute.

A few odd moments, but I did really like it. I'm partly giving it a five though to raise the average.

I kind of liked the idea of Leela not being human, but to be honest with time I was starting to think she seemed more like a mutant. She was too human for a Futurama alien, so not that upsetting a revelation.

Unlike some who reviewed here, I kind of liked her parents. Although somewhat misplaced, when you consider how dire her childhood has been presented, their efforts to give her a better life were quite touching. The end deal number was also very sweet. (Mentioned somewhere I was sappy) Yet at the same time it had some fairly memorable funny lines.

Leela: "Am I an even more boring Truman Show to you"

Bender: "Wait I'm a robot, who cares if this stuff ruins DNA"

Mutants "We plan to beat you up afterward"

Some others too.

I think this episode had the potential to be a whole lot better. It's certainly a critical ep. in terms of character development and the resolution of Leela's origins, but somehow it just didn't work that well. Most of the people here seem to agree with that. I don't think it needed more humor, I just think the plot was sort of shaky. Someone already wrote that they thought Leela's suicidal dive into the toxic goo made no sense, and I agree -- why would she do that if she was just chasing down mutants who offended her? Also, the weather balloon was just... weak. I dunno. I also think introducing Leela's parents just a few minutes into it was a mistake; it would have been better to give us just a tiny clue and then keep us guessing until the end (like The Sting, for example).
I think what made this episode so disappointing to myself and many others is that it didn't live up to its full potential.

Well, two years ago people used to watch Futurama for laugh. As for me, I surprisingly get lots of philosophic thoughts and emotions from Futurama. So, if concider Futurama as an entertainment show, the episode is no good. But what if you only think about situation?
I state that it's the most philosofically strong and sensitive episode. Even better than about worms. Just imagine little child Leela, all alone in a hostile and unforgiving world, which is far too cruel to her because of her. Imagine what she passed, ruined childhood, no home, responsibility for herself from the first step....
And how marvellous are final seconds! Love, care and help moments fill my heart with willigness to do good for people and to thank my parents for what they gave me - life..
We love you, little child, and don't worry, everything will be fine!..
I'll go, try to play sentimental blues again...
P.S. A good illustration is wonderful artist FemJesse's art "solemn portrait of a teen" on leelazone.com.ar, i mean that's the most wise image of Leela.
P.P.S. I'm not an old crappy mother, i'm 18 years old hippie....

This episode doesn't work so well on my computer because I have a really dark monitor(because it's old and broken, I have tried to change settings before), so I couldn't see anything most of the time. It made sense that Leela was a mutant because come on people, a woman who looks just like a human except for the fact that she just has one eye? Duh. But in all honesty, I'm not sure if the mystery of Leela's parents was something that needed to be resolved. It didn't make me angry or anything though. I just took more of a neutral stance to it. I liked the guy who appeared in all the news reports. I also like that girl with the third ear, that thing rocks. In short, I'd say this was a highly average episode.

I can't believe the apathy for this episode on here, I thought that the last two and a half minutes of this show were among the most powerful I have ever seen on television. That little pizzicato 5 tune at the end excuses the fact that it wasn't a laugh a minute, however it was still funnier than an episode of virtually every other sitcom on british television, and I can't imagine 'two pints of lager and a packet of crisps' or 'my family' ever being able to use a musical montage so movingly. This was pure class.Top marks.

Ugh. The episode itself was fine, but...a mutant? Cripes, what a waste. They never capitalized on Leela's being an alien and now she's not. Terribly disappointing.

This is another case of the writers not taking advantage of the setting. Mutants can occur in any time period; aliens living comfortably on Earth only in the future. Way to take all the romance out of it.

I thought it was so sweet.I have been a Futurama fan for a short time but I have seen many of the episodes and I had always wanted to know more about Leela.Aperantley, I got my wish in this episode.I couldn't get over how sweet the little fanally at the end of the episode was.I'm an emotional guy but, not in very many things.I never cried after the death of someone I knew or at the weddings Ive been too. This episode of Futurama made me cry.I'm writing this review nearly in tears after seeing the episode (which is the only thing that drove me to write it).I hope that every one else who saw this episode was as pleased as I was.It wasn't a very funy episode, but it made a very strong point.

Why this is still rated in the mid-70s is beyond me. Personally, I thought it was a great episode, and a great way to shed light on Leela's background. Flashbacks involving the characters are always pulled off well.

And I thought the humor was very good in general. You had Farnsworth's glow-in-the-dark nose machine, Bender disposing of toxic waste, lots of good lines by Fry, and plenty of mutant-related humor. Nice emotion at the end too.

Awesome episode.
- It's good to see Futurama is not just about jokes... But it's not too soapy either (as some Simpsons/ Southpark etc episodes can be)
- It's cool to see some series secrets actually resolved...
- The ending rocked ;-).

Fox should really have let Futurama reach 100 episodes...

The last 3 scenes that show how her parents have been near her all this time are superbe and well thought through. Of course not as funny as other episodes, but that wasn't the intention I suppose. This one and the Fry brothers-episode (forgot the name) must be the 2 most emotional episodes.

People can hate on this episode all they want but the fact remains that even comedy shows delve into serious story arcs now and then. The Simpsons being a prime example. If i thought of all the poor Lisa Simpson episodes my head would explode. Leela's parents wanting a better life for her was great, and there were even a few good laughs in there as well. And if you can't find any kind of happiness when here parents are subtlely looking out for here while the superb "Baby Love Child" by Pizzicato 5 is playing they you sir have no heart.

No matter how many times I catch this episode, the end sequence brings a tear to my eye.

Plenty of jokes throughout, but more of a plot-driven episode than a comedic romp. The plot builds upon itself throughout the episode nicely and of course ends with a visual sequence that provides an excellent cap to the story arc.

I hold this episode and Luck O' The Fryish in the same regard. They both delve into character backstories and provide more depth to the character. The problem is that a lot of people don't care about Leela for some reason (I blame Peggy Bundy), hence LOTF is generally regarded as a better episode.

What are a select number of you guys talking about? This is the number one episode in all the series!

To this day, Pizzicato Five's 'Baby Love Child' still makes me start out crying.
For the lyrics, go to:
http://www ... c.nsf/Baby-Love-Child-lyrics-Pizzicato-Five/A6DBE48191202D2948256A230022594D

(You know, I try to keep up the 'tough guy' ensemble, but really, I'm an ol' softy. Maybe not not the 'I'll lay down my life for you' way, but more of the 'If you're lying stoned in the gutter unconscious, I'll think twice before kicking you the fifth time' sort of way.)

And remember how we always thought that Leela's orgin would remain a mystery? Look what happened!

I think that Fry will continually chase desperately after Leela, forever being spurned away.

I thought this episode was hysterical. Lots of good jokes: "Garfield's owner Jon's forehead," that line about how the machine can do other things ("Why shouldn't it?"), the leg mutant, that line about how Leela's parents need to convince the world she's an alien because it's her only chance to lead a normal life, the pile of baskets in the orphanarium, and so on.

(To answer a question I found posted here earlier: The song "Baby Love Child" from the Japanese group, Pizzicato 5, is the backing track in the montage sequence at the end of this episode, "Leela's Homeworld".)

I never followed Futurama while it was being aired on Fox - except for the occasional show here and there. While I actually did like the show, at the time I was raising 10 children and simply too tired to stay up late enough to watch it. :-) I now have all of the episodes ever aired - and my now nearly grown kids and I watch them frequently. I loved this episode - Leela's childhood had already been a backdrop to many previous episodes, so it was neat for 'her' to have some closure and of course, it then opened the door to more visits to the Mutant world under New New York City. The counter argument, from one of my kids, that it would have been cooler if her parents were aliens so we could have episodes exploring that aspect (alien worlds, etc.) doesn't work because there are so many aliens already in the show and many episodes are of the crew out in space where they come in contact with aliens quite frequently. Mutants - while alien in their own way - are earth-bound and right under the character's very feet. I think that makes it more interesting in general. I gave this episode a 5 - mostly for filling in the blanks, using "Baby Love Child" as the ending song (something they never really do - using other people's music) and the jokes were right on line with any of the other episodes that are 'backgrounders' as opposed to 'continuing adventures of' stories. ;-)

I've seen them all, and this is my all time favorite ep. Even if you put aside the beautiful ending, this ep is a lot funnier than anyone is giving it credit for. Reading some of the meh comments on this board actually made me angry. 54/72? What?

This episode is very good. It made me cry again (The Luck of Fryrish), and was also emotive, such as the ending of the series or other episodes like The Sting, Jurassic Bark or Time Keeps Slippin

Good episode, demonstrates again that this show had excellent writings and character development and was funny at the same time! :)

A decent episode. I tend to like the 'story based' episodes that reveal things. Amy was really funny at the begining of the episode when she said leela's parents must be proud, when she's an orphan lol what a stupid girl

really enjoyed this episode. the end montage was the best part and brought me to tears...then again, I'm a mommy. Really showed another side to the characters and I love to see their origins.

too bad people aren't so deep in their thoughts and just want mindless humor all the time.

That ending gets me every single time. Although the episode really isn't that funny, it's so heart warming. I love it.

They could have made the part where Leela finds out who her parents were more unexpected, the ending was kinda rushed. Still a good episode.

Being a Johnny come lately (Heeeliew it's 2008!) to the series, I have enjoyed watching the series so much on Comedy Central, I have gone out to get all the Volumes. Leela's Homeworld, as all the episodes, require a much deeper analysis. Futurama continuously defies formula. It is not simply comedy, it is a mixture of many things done in a well made sit-com. Despite all the inconsisties of contenuity from episode to episode, Futurama provides food for thought. This episode is a great introduction to Leela's parents. I especially love Dad's misformed mouth (opening like normal, but with teeth moving in from the side; it plays tricks on the mind). It is an excellent piece of work. I just wish I had seen all of these episodes first run.

Yes I know I'm coming late, even though I did see the episode years ago. However I could pass the opportunity to comment on this viewing all those "Not the funnier" episode. What make an animated sitcom is a good mixed of emotions and laughter and the Simpson and alterego Futuram are very well reknowned for mixing those two together.

I for myself prefer Professor as a character and Leela come in second, then Bender, then Fry. Leela comes in second because of her history (I was an orphan) and that story just writes by deepest dream of meeting my real "Parents" unfortunately mine are dead.

So I have a particuliar affection for this episode since it dealt with something that really not everyone understands plenty. And there was some very nice jokes in it too, and yeah the drama of that episode made me like Futuram even better and I have purchased the all Seasons DVDs and the Game and The two movies.

There's a fine line between Laughter and Cry my dear friends, check that episode again and think of it again you might change your opinion about it.

This is one of the emotional episodes and whilst it's probably the weakest of the emotional episodes, the emotional episodes have set a ridiculously high standard. This episode stands strong with a great plot and great humour.

Not how I envisioned Leela meeting her parents, but the payoff at the end was just as rewarding. Great episode.

This is a really good episode. I kind of wish they had waited until the end of the episode to drop the big secret, but I watched Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles and The Mutants Are Revolting after this episode, so it didn't make a big impression. But it was really good.

Leela's arc finally comes to a close with her learning about her past.

This is another sentimental but incredible episode because we finally get to learn everything about our favorite one-eyed alien, Leela.

After multiple searches, we now realize her parents wanted her to have a happy and successful life and that they still love her very much, despite not having raised her, and instead letting the orphanarium nurture and take care of her. When Leela dives into the toxic waste - something happens. Leela doesn't develop any side effects. And with that, she sees two people in black cloths, not knowing who they are so she tracks them down. And this is where the climax hits. Just as she's about to destroy them because of the bracelet, out comes Fry with the shocking revelation: they didn't kill her parents, they ARE her parents. And with that, we come to the conclusion that Leela is not an alien - she is the least mutated sewer mutant, and the family is finally reunited. The final scenes also show her parents always aiding Leela - preventing her from falling off a staircase, giving her cookies, a happy birthday present and tucking her in. I admit it wasn't hard to tear up at the last 3 minutes.

Another huge highlight here has to be Katey Sagal's voice acting here. Even though not a live-action series, the power and emotion she brings to the table here is perfectly done, and would've been ruined in any other way. Definitely worthy of an Emmy-winning performance.

Perhaps the only real flaw is that the story kinda ended up being predictable in the final act, but given its emotional climax that can easily be overlooked here. Another fantastic Futurama episode.

10/10
