Great concept, great gags, great inside (mainly trek) jokes, great animation. It was again another incredible Futurama episode. I really loved the whole sci-fi shows being canceled and the two casts battling each other.

The only big minuses were no Hermes, Prof, Amy or Nibbler. For the season finally that was a sad sight. :( I'm going to miss Futurama. We must have more incredible episodes.

What can I say? Another great one, though I thought that it wasn't necessary to have it in the "retelling what happened" mode. But that's a small thing of course. Fry was awesome, good jokes, and a great story. Malllvar ruled!

This was only the season finale (I assume) because it was what Fox picked... but other than that, it frelling ruled! This might have been the best episode they've ever done. Period.

Of course the irony of writing a review of an episode talking about how pathetic basement-dwelling geeks are while sitting in my parents' basement is not lost on me at all.

one top five favorite episodes. I love the part about with the beeping machine. that was a big kick. though sadly very little dr.zoidberg.I hated the part with Leela and william shatner. Leela disgrased herself.
I love the part with nichell nichouls

A fine episode. It wasn't exploited to the best of its potential and I wish it would have not been based upon an account of what had already happened -- but that's a minor thing. Great Trek jokes -- and I LOVED Welshy! HaHa...Scotty, Welshy...get it??? Scotty is Scottish, Welshy is Welsh... Oh, forget it...

A very well done episode. The attempts of Fry and Bender to find weapons to fight the Star Trek cast was hilarious.

Disappointed that there really was no Farnsworth, Amy, etc. But oh well. Still a great episode.

Whoo, Hoo! That was a great ep, one of the few ones this season to get me up, out of my chair, onto the floor, laughing uncontrollably. I did that when Chekov was asked something and fry asked him to say it in Russian. "nuclear wesels" Anyway, can't remember exactly what they said, but all I remember was it was really funny. This goes to the top of a very short list of great futurama eps.

I've never seen an episode of Star Trek in my life, but I still thought it was quite a well done episode. I laughed my ass off just after the first commercial break, when Fry is crippled in the wheelchair. I won't ruin it for those who haven't seen it yet ^_^

A Find farwell to a show that sould have been the Simpsons replacement. If Fox had a brain, they would have retired The Simpsons with dignity and cultivated Futurama. Instead the produce garbage Simpson episodes and slowly kill this excellent program.

Greatest episode of the season (3 or 4, depending on your point of view :-)

More hilarious Star Trek jokes and references that should possibly fit in a half hour, and it still managed to squeeze in an excellent Futurama story that wasn't just "forced" to fit the guest stars :-)

I can only give it a 5?

Brilliant from start to finish. Well - one problem - as we learned from the autograph session, "Melllvar" is spelled with three Ls, yet closed captioning (so I could understand "L-Dog")insisted on spelling it "Melvar". This concept of one L both confused and infuriated us, but I guess that was really the captioners fault.

How can any show so well written, animated and just plain funny not consistently be in the ratings top 10. Oh yeah - because Fox hates it and wants it to fail. I think a few Fox executives should play Welshy in the reruns.

Great episode. Great. Funny, smart, insightful, wicked... To the reviewer complaining about the 'story told in flashback' style, that was very deliberate, and a great homage to/spoof of the Trek episode "The Cage". And to the guy calling it the 'worst episode ever', I hope you're trying to do parody of the 'Comic Book Guy' mentality, because that's just sad.

By the way, for anyone who didn't like the "Retelling what happened" point of view. Hello, that was the biggest gag of the show. It was an homage to "The Menagerie" from begining to end.

There was so much to love about this episode... I too wonder if FOX handpicked this episode for the "SEASON" Finale? I loved how Welshy kept getting zapped throughout the episode, kinda reminded me of Monty Python where they blew up a cat and then kept blowing up an animal in every sketch after that!

I kinda got a kick out of Shatner doing a spoken word of Eminem's "Slim Shady" .... and How checkov said.... "What is so great about that?" then Mellvaar remarked.... "He found a way!"

How everyone was making Checkov say Nucluer Wessels....

VERY funny episode and a nice return to form. Personally, as much as I hate the idea of the show ending after next season when the backlog of episodes will be depleted, the last few episodes haven't been up to par in my mind, particularly the blernsball and Iron Chef episodes. As much as I LOVE Futurama and as much as I want it to succeed, those episodes just weren't up to par when you compare them against the excellent quality of the first two seasons.

Loved the final Futurama episode with the original Star Trek cast... they were good sports about the whole thing.

BUT the BEST, MOST HILARIOUS part of the show was watching an Eagle from the Space: 1999 tv series have the honour of taking the 79 prized episodes of the threatening, dangerous (;)) "Trekkie fanatics" and flying them off to safety to some distant planet.
Justice is served! Wwwwwwwayyyy to go Matt!

Ok, this was probably the funniest episode of season 4, BUT:
No Amy, no professor, no Hermes, Zapps gags were old and lame, no making fun of Kif and finally NOT A SINGLE JOKE BY ZOIDBERG!
They left out nearly everything that made Futurama so lovable and i consider this rather poor for a season (or maybe series?) finale.

Beautiful!

Such a great tribute to so many Trek episodes, and I loved the Space 1999 reference.

I would have liked a little more repartie between Shatner and Zapp, and I love it that Leela fooled around with Shatner given her disgust with the Zapper.

Funnier on second viewing, as if often the case.

A nice send off for the season (and perhaps the series).

I think this in one of the best episodes of season 4. It had a lot of funny stuff, though nothing to knock me off my seat, it was an entertaining episode all the way through.

Why did I only give it 4 out of 5 stars??? Well, I think that the episode might not be as throughly enjoyable for non-hard core Trek fans and they would miss out on about half of the jokes. I am still waiting to test out this theory on my friends. Then again, I wonder if any Futurama fans are not also hard core Star Trek Fans too?

Most shows fail miserably when it comes to guest stars. But the whole premise of Futurama lends itself very easily (and goofily) to guest stars. They become part of the joke, being heads in a jar. This is one of the most solid episodes of the year, and it works in many directions. The characters are bright and interesting, and true to their original set ups, and the action of the episode is quick and well paced with lots of funny worked in.

Great work, and if this was the last episode of the series, they picked a good one.

Very good, very good. Futurama and Star Trek. Mmmmm....

Um, Jimmy Doohan apparently isn't on the best of terms with the rest of the cast. I remember reading Shatner's "Star Trek: Movie Memories" talking about how he and Walter Koenig and James Doohan never got along. I think he and Koenig finally kind of worked things out, but Doohan wasn't quite so amiable.

I don't feel like getting my tape out right now, but there was a spot in the episode where Shatner and Nimoy made some crack about Doohan and gave each other high fives. :) Greatness.

On my 2nd of the many viewings of this episode, I caught so many more hilarious jokes because I was laughing so uncontrollably the first time that I missed a lot. This was the BEST Futurama episode ever!!! If Fox knows enough to save their best episode for the season finale, then why do they care so little for the show as a whole?

I see that some people find the ommission of the other Futurama characters a negative point, but I found it to be a hilarious parallel to the original Star Trek in itself, where almost every episode was basically Kirk, Spock, McCoy (the big three) and sometimes Scotty, just like this episode only highlighted the "big three" of the Futurama cast with a brief appearance by Zoidberg/Scotty.

Easily the best episode of the entire series, even without the Professor, Amy, Zoidberg and Hermes. There were so many references in this... I catch new ones every single time I watch it.

And for those who missed Kif, he got a nice moment in the end credits.

There were far too many good parts of this episode to get into them all. Those who complained about it didn't bother to say why they disliked it, or seemed to be into porn and trolling.

Isn't there some way to remove clearly idiotic comments?

Hmmmm, this episode is kinda hard for me to rate. After all of the hype I was expecting more, but I was disappointed. I’m not a trekkie, I’ve never even watched a single full episode of any Star Trek series in my life. I expect pretty much every trekkie joke went over my head. I still enjoyed the episode, and I loved the animation, especially the scenes of the P.E Ship crashing. Bender had a lot of really cool moments, and I liked the way everyone stayed in character, had good lines and were funny throughout. I missed the other members of the P.E crew, especially Professor Farnsworth, but I guess this episode was all right, but it wasn’t great either. I enjoyed it more the second time.

I have to admit that where 'Star Trek' is concerned, my knowledge is limited to two or three episodes of 'The Next Generation' and 'Voyager', and that's about it. Therefore, it came as no surprise to me that most of the stuff in this episode went completely over my head. I think the only Trekkie joke that I got out of the whole episode was about the Vulcan death grip, or whatever it's called, and that's about it. Really. Unfortunately, as the episode was practically made up of only Star Trek jokes, I can't say I really enjoyed it.

Of course, there were some good bits. Zapp may not have been anywhere near up to his classic self, but I loved his 'double yes!' line. The funniest bit in the episode, though, was Shatner's take on 'The Real Slim Shady', even though I had no idea what it was supposed to be a reference to. How could anyone watch that part and not laugh? :D Bender's machine gun gag was good as well.

As for the rest, well, I'm sure that I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I was a 'Star Trk' fan, but like most season four episodes, there was still something missing that made past episodes so great. I really, really hope that season four was just the 'reject episodes' from season three, and that season five will return on top form.

One final note - the Top 2 'Star Trek' jokes of the series are still 'Spock! Do the thing! - 'I don't do that any more', and 'Like the Federation in ya Star Trek programme'.

It's hard to believe this is the same show I fell in love with! I guess I should've figured something like this episode would happen, considering the writers are obvious trekkies, but there's no excuse for an entire episode based around science fiction's fecal matter. The abismal jokes and the worst plot ever devised aren't exactly the buffers needed to save this train wreck.

Although the idea of banishing Star Trek and all its horrors into oblivion is a glorious thought, I'd settle for never having to watch it permeate and deteriorate my favorite TV show.

Matt, HOW COULD YOU!!

You know, we really shoulda alerted the Star Trek community about this episode. Mighta boosted rateings. Sites like trektoday.com and section31.com posted messages about every little turd trek cast members make. I think we missed a chance to boost the shows rateings here seeing as the jerks at fox refuse to promte the show.

futurama is one of my all-time favorite tv shows, and this was a great ep... except for the lack of continuity. throughout the previous seasons, there have been numerous direct refences to star trek ("Hey Spock, do the thing!", the star trek internet debate fry and leela walk by ) with no one making a ruckus about the series being banned. also, what about the other 4 star trek series and TNG movies?
i also loved the beeps, the excessively-loud rumble when welshy jumped onto the ground, and "i'm literally angry with rage!"

hey dane i got the scotty-welshy thing too.

A great episode for someone who enjoys Trek, but can laugh about it too. It was a shame Dr. Zoidberg wasn't there (Always has the best lines)or James Doohan (What's with that? Upset with Groening after the Simpsons' "Star Trek XII" 'Captain! I'm too fat to reach the control panel!') Still lots of great inside jokes (He's Dead, Jim!) and references, hope it was as funny for non-Trekkers.

Matt Groening's definitely proved his point about if you hate sci-fi then you'll love futurama, because even though I hate star trek, I probably found this the funniest episode. All of the guest voices were put to really good use, particularly the voices of chekov and sulu.

Best lines:
Nimoy: "I feel like hugging you!"
Shatner: "Well I would but you have no body....and we're both men."
--
Chekov: "How can you do a spoken word version of a rap song?"
Melllvar: "He found a way."#

Sulu: "I think i've done enough conventions to know how to spell 'Melllvar'"

Best Episode Ever. I don't think there'll be another episode as funny and great as this episode. It reminds me of watching season four Simpsons episodes again where they crammed in jokes for every second of the episode. Of course for a Trek nerd like me; this was pure ectasy. Best Part: Shatner doing an Eminem song. 2nd best part: Fry in that thing ala Captain Pike. Of course there were all the particular jokes at Star Trek's expense. Worst part: None. Perfect Futurama episode. It can't get better than this.

Terrific episode. I laughed all the way through. I've never watched much Star Trek so I didn't get some of the jokes, but I got a lot of them (I think).

Fry was so funny in this episode. The caterpillar bow and Star Trek jokes I actually got were also very funny. There was only one part I didn't like, when Leela and William Shatner made out. Ugh. Leela can be so slutty sometimes (like when she slept with Zapp). Also, why did Fry look so disheveled in that beeping machine thing?

Anyway, great ep! It had non-stop-laughter and reminded me of earlier episodes.

A downright hilarious episode for all sorts of reasons. The interaction of the Star Trek cast was great, as each member (save WELSHY!) sent themselves up perfectly while at the same time avoiding obvious pardoy. The PX Crew was in rare form, too. Even the structure of the episode was like an old ST ep! Bender's line about "another sci-fi show cancelled before its time" was too funny, although I can only hope that Futurama will prove as hardy as Trek. George's little tirade about karate had me rolling.

Wait a minute! This episode was originally supposed to take place AFTER "The Why Of Fry"! I'm bringing this up because Leela kissed Fry at the end of that episode, right? So why is she kissing Shatner in this episode? Did the writers forget how the episode before ended? They should really watch the past episode before they do the episode afterwards. Any way, besides that, this episode had one of the best written dialouge of any episode before. "Welshyyyyyyyy!!!!!"

Unless you were a trekkie, a lot of the humour is pretty lost. Having watched very little Star Trek (I personally think it's terrible, but that's just me) it seemed like the creators were just making an excuse to work with the cast of ST.

I've been a futurama fan but keep missing the episodes, I've missed more than I've seen but they are always hillarious. This episode outdone them all for me. I only found this site because I wanted to know if this episode was available on DVD yet, it was that funny. There were so many trek jokes, both subtle and gross. I can't believe they got so many cast members to appear in it. Every Trekky would love this episode, they will probably show it at conventions. If Fox had just advertised this episode the ratings could have been packed with trekkies. Even the end credits were hillarious and filled with trek jokes (Kif as the alien at the last frame of the credits) I hope this show goes on and please do more Trek, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Space 1999, Dr Who, Battlestar Galactica etc. spoofs

I live in Australia, and I've got it even worse than you Americans in that I've got to stay up until 11:30pm to watch a Futurama episode. As such, I haven't seen many, but this week I did and this episode came on and I almost woke the rest of the house laughing so much. Some of the Star Trek in jokes may have gone past a few people, like Shatner ripping his shirt off when they started fighting and then for no reason suducing and making out with a female (in this case Leela). Also the classic where an unknown character, in this case Welshy, is introduced only to be killed for no reason (in this case repetatively).

Excellent episode. I hope the rest are this good.

The prospect of Star Trek being ilegal and being a 'taboo' is interesting and hillarious. I agree with dr. Zoidberg, Leela disgraced herself with William Shatner.

Still, very good episode.

A CLASSIC! Easily one of the BEST episodes of Futurama ever done. Though I've never watched (or, I must confess, had the desire to watch) an episode of Star Trek, I've never laughes so hard at an episode of Futurama as I have at this one. I have to give David Goodman credit for a brilliantly writen episode! I just wish I could give it a higher rating

I'm a fan of futurama not star trek and while there's always the odd reference its nothing that leaves me puzzled to the point of changig the channel but imagine my teptation to reach for the remote when the crew went to a planet inhabited by the ultimate treky!
In fairness though i was still entertained and got a few chuckles out of it.

This episode is every Trek cliche collapsed into a single, hysterical story, with gag references to virtually every episode in the series, from the flashback storytelling device, to Melllvar's planet, to the battle between the casts, to the final plot twist. If you're not a Trek fan, you won't get most of them, but I think that's the point; the writers seemed to have meant this episode as a Futurama tribute to Star Trek. As such, it could be the single greatest Trek parody ever made.

Probably my third favorite of the show. I used to be a Star Trek fan, until the entire franchise got milked dry. I laughed myself silly at everything in this one. It was also cool to see a homage to Space:1999(my favorite sci-fi and TV show)when the Eagle shot out the three seasons, animated series, and all six movies of the original series toward that planet. I could detect a little revenge against all of the Star Trek fans, demented or otherwise, who made fun of the classic British science fiction series(i.e. in your face type of symbolism). Star Trek and Star Wars maybe over, but Space:1999 and Futurama will live on.

Best episode ever! my friend and i quote it all the time. i have memorized it. i love it to death. loved all the little subtle references to trek most people wouldnt have seen. loved how McCoy was included in the group as a living active member, even though DeForest Kelley was beamed up to heaven, and so for obvious reasons didnt voice his charactor.

best parts:

Melllvar with 3 "L's"

Takei-"i think ive done enough conventions to know how to spell Melllvar"

Shatman and scoring an alien chick

Nimoy: "lets see if this actually works"

"WELLLLLLSHYYYYYY!!!!!!!!"

Jonathan Frakes: "yes! front row!" (because of his desire to steal Picard's job)

Nichols: "in the 3rd season i kissed Shatner!"

fans fighting over who knew more

melllvar turning out just like Trelane in THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS

Balance of terror quote

the "christine Chapel" instead of "Cistine Chapel"

Nimoy: "hmm a body! Buff, tan... yeah! this is mine alright!" (sure Leonard! you should rewatch A PIECE OF THE ACTION, mr. shirtless and pasty)

By far the greatest episode of Futurama to date, especially for the Star Trek references. Even if you know nothing about Star Trek the references will have some meaning. Memorable Quotes:
Zapp Brannigann: A Fight to the death huh? I assume there were no survivers...
George Takae: I think I've done enough Star Trek Conventions to know how to spell 'Melllvar'.
George Takae: *Gesturing to Shatner on stage* How can you do a spoken word version of a rap song?
Melllvar: He found a way...
(If you did not understand the last quote you have not heard the Shatner Spoken Word cover songs, like Common People and Lucy in the Sky...

One of the funniest episodes ever made. Written I suspect by a Trekkie at heart with very honest (and hence on-the-money) look at the whole Trek following phenomenon. Mellvar was an inspired creation and the eternal Trek convention he initiated - complete with Shatner speaking the Won't the Real Slim Shady... rap with everyone sat round lounge tables - was hilarious. Although most of the jokes were in-jokes this won't be a problem for most Futurama fans.
