Bender is about to get an upgrade to compete with the Professor's latest acquisition. But in the end, he isn't all that sure about it.

i liked the ending personally, it made better an episode that quite frankly, was just really sub-par. I didnt like the episode overall, it wasnt really that funny although there were a few parts that stick out (like the bot with the cassette tapes... "what!?").

Overall, the episode just wasn't good, it felt more like one of those horrible Simpsons episodes that i've been avoiding for the last 5 years.

This episode started off really strong and kept going! I was very impressed by the storyline and the jokes (ie. The watermill robot). Also Bender's attack on NNY was classic.

THe one gripe I have is the last 3 minutes... what is that?? Does this mean Bender doesn't drink alcohol now? Why twist it like that the episode was going so well before (but I guess it would be hard to re-Bender him). O~well I laughed a lot so it's a 4.

Very funny, my 3 favorite quotes

1.Announcer: The woman who's been MOMopolizing the robot industry for years
Fry:I get it,
Announcer:MOM!,
Fry:Now I get it"

2.Bender: Wow, a tape recorder unit, you were obsolete years ago
Tape Recorder Unit(Grabbing tape labeled SNAPPY COMEBACK) : Your Mother

3. Bender: Robot 1x, save all my friends! AND ZOIDBERG!

Brilliant, somewhat reminiscent of another bender classic, "godfellas". A big improvement over "Bend Her". I liked Bender's new vision of reality, cymbal banging monkey, roberto (Hooray!), and especially the mommy bot. The wave animation was the most impressive I've scene during the entire run of the series. One question: Is that it for robot 1X, or will it return at all later on?

It was at heart, the same episode as week. If next week is Bender dealing with a change to his body, I'll actually almost be glad Fox cancelled this show!
There were maybe 4 jokes I liked.
I can't beleive i thought this episode was going to rock!
Act one was really the only good act. Act 3 and the ending was just stupid. If I could write the ending over, Bender would question his existance then the animation would slowly go back to the simplest storyboards and we'd see that bender was right, he's just a cartoon!

That was a pretty good episode. The ending a bit of a twist and all that wierd stuff at the end when Bender walked outside. When everyone paused whenn that boulder was going to hit those two times was funny. Fry had 1 good moment but not much Fry. In fact, at the end the only line he had for the last 10 min. or so was "Where's Bender?". It needed more Fry.

All in all it was a good episode. I don't think I can take anymore Bender episodes like the one next week. FOX putting three Bender episodes in a row is the most dumbest thing it could do, besides pre-empting. We need a variety episode!

Huge improvement over Bend Her. More laughs, better storyline, plus the ending made the episode make more sense. I really liked the message Bender made with the rocks and seeing IZac in the crowd. Also, anyone notice that last week they went to the 3004 Olympics and this week they went to Roboticon 3003? Opps. Oh well, an entertaining episode all around. Not a "5", but a solid "4".

It had some good stuff. The anti-tech robots and the robot fair were neat. I love robots though. I even considered submitting a story about Luddite Robots, but maybe now I won't.

I have mixed feelings on the ending. In one way it seemed like a good touch, but in another way it just seemed like the cliche "it was all a dream" kind of ending.

A couple incidentals. I think the upgrade was to make him compatible with 1X not identical. Still even if Bender no longer needs alcohol, he'll still drink anyway. He doesn't need to smoke cigars, but he does anyway. Also I guess I'm not as enthusiastic about Fry as most here. I like him as much as the other characters, but the lack of him wouldn't bother me anymore than an ep with less Leela or Bender or even Farnsworth.

I loved this episode, though the ending was a little weird. I've never really enjoyed those clich "it was all your imagination" endings. If they hadn't continued it with the upgrader's comment and Bender's journey out, then I probably would have given it a lower rating.

This was definitely better than last week's episode, and I did enjoy last week's episode. The obsolete robots on the island were great.

Oh yes, and I also liked Amy's comment about her hair having a cuter cut than before. There were plenty of amusing points to this episode, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This episode was mediocre at best. I for one am getting a bit tired of bender episodes. I really wish fox would show them in the correct order, that was we wouldn't be stacked with 2 Bender eps in a row. The episode did have its good points, though. I did enjoy the 1-X bot and the re-appearence of other robots like Roberto and Fat-Bot. Sadly this ep just didn't hold up. Cassette bot and the out dated robots were hilarious and may be one of the only things in the episode that made me laugh. But I'm beggining to think Futurama's death is going to be slow and painful.

Really this is more of a 4.5 or a 9/10 than a 4. I really liked the episode and it kept me laughing all of the way through. Slightly better than last week's episodes but still not as good as pure comedy episodes like Fry and the Slurm Factory.

Best parts:
The bots on the island.
The anti-technology scene.
"No, get out!"

I thought this was a very good episode. Funnier than the past few. They seem to be building and getting funnier before the series ends. Hope fully the last two will be great. Although from what I read the last one will probably be sentimental rather than funny. Thats ok though how "luck of the fryish" is probably the best episode.

This episode was weird like The Sting except the ending didn't make sense. There were only a couple jokes that made me laugh (Bender calling Beethoven a deaf bastard; the cassette robot putting in the What!? tape twice; Leela's reaction "Oh great, now he's made of wood."). Bender did his "Neat!" and took a picture once again, and Fry said "I get it!" just like in Spanish Fry. Ah, running gags. The ending where it turned out to just be a hallucination/dream was great because of Fatbot saying about Bender what Bender said about Roberto. It was cool and made the episode come around full circle. The only part of the episode I really didn't like was the part right after that with Bender walking on a dream-like road. It was just... weird. Although I did like what he said, "I guess reality is whatever you make it."

Anyway, the episode was good, but I hope the last 2 are better.

A lot of people hated the last five episodes, I have just hated Bend Her. Bender as a woman was just wrong. I'm sorry plain and simple. It's been a uneven season. But this episode was memorable. Come on the X-1 in a over the rack packing. The female robot who has a water wheel. The great line reads. Well Two more left. Keep up the good work. This was 50% That Pharoah Episode, except less whining from bender wanting to be remembered.

This was really funny! Bender made out of wood was really funny looking, like Fry without a nose. Would have been a five if not the goofy cliche ending. I own cats so I thought that the robot scratching post joke was friggin' priceless-also Bender had some truly awesome lines. The top three were "Save my friends...and Zoidberg" "Bite my splintery wooden ass" and "He sure made me look like a pile of crap, didn't he?" Bender trying to kiss Nibbler was also funny. This is probably my second favorite episode this season, behind The Farnsworth Paradox, and its one of the better Bendercentric ones overall.

Not too bad, but I've seen much better. In the current season, Bender's emotions have been going "over the top" way too often, so much that I can't define his character anymore.

But the six-pack of ducks was one of the funniest images I've seen in a while. The wave sequence was breathtaking for an animated show.

A welcome improvement over the last three terrible episodes. I wouldn't call this a classic, but it proved entertaining.

We had an actual story going here, some good jokes and even some obscure geek humour (got a good chuckle out of the Sinclair 2K bit). It had a twist ending like The Sting, but came off not anywhere as intelligent or thoughtful as that episode.

Basically I'd call an episode like this enjoyable fluff. I liked it, it entertained me, but overall I'd have to call it just average (nothing memorable here).

Incidentally, I watched a 400MB SVCD version of the episode tonight, wow...what a difference compared to my VCR + signal off-the-air from an indoor antenna. I'll be watching the final two episodes the same way hopefully...it's like watching a DVD. :)

Not the best ever kind of episode, but really enjoyable.

The Cartridge Bot and the Sinclair Bot were hilarious (if you know what a Sinclair is).

I'm still missing subplots with the last few episodes. Looks like they overdid it with "330 big boys" and then dropped them all together.

Also, the "just a dream" plot returned too soon.

In general though, I enjoyed it.

This episode was okay. Not too good, not too bad. The main problem I have with it is that it was similar with Spanish Fry in the respect that it started good but ended weak. I thought Obsoletely Fabulous was really funny at the beginning. But once Bender met those anti-technology robots, the episode became boring. Everything after that just wasn't interesting or funny at all. Although I thought the very, very end of it (i.e. the scene with the unicorn) was hilarious.

Honestly, I sat through the first act thinking "Uh-oh. Here's the last *bad* (on the Futurama scale of course) show of the series. (I read here that "Bender Shouldn't Be..." is wonderful and we all have high hopes for "Devil's Hands".

The second act had several laughs with the obselete robots. Was anyone else here old enough to laugh at the Sinclair jokes?

But - the third act was a home run. From Bender's smashing the periscope for being technological sorcery, to Leela's "Oh Lord - he's made of wood" to Tinkerbell lighting his cigar. Golod - I tell ya - pure gold.

So - a deserved 4. If the first act had been a little funnier, it could have squeaked by with a 5.

"I'm a steam powered, wooden robot - the way nature intended"

What a good episode! Not quite on par with Godfellas, but comparable. I liked seeing Bender change again...but not too much, so I hope the upgrade only affected his feelings for Robot 1-X, like it did with Roberto.
Kudos to a surprise ending that didn't seem tacked on! Also, it meant the weakest part of the episode (the island) wasn't real! which redeemed the episode somehow....
And the main characters had some great characteristic lines, especially Bender.... (I'll leave those to the rest of the site)

Most impressive. Leaps and bounds better then last week. Some of the best jokes were just slipped in there with such grace. Turning the "No Boating" sign into a boat was perfect slap-stick humor. The WaterMill robot was great. Nice wrap up with the ending. My biggest compaint and what keeps it from a five was it was another Bender Ep. I really think that most of season 5 was a bit dissapointing, and I really doubt that if more episoes were (are) made they will be much better. Its episodes like these that make me sad that Futrama will be gone soon. It wasn't too deep, but a good, funny episode. It was good to see Fat Bot and Roberto again.

Also, Bender's submarine was a copy of Cornelius Drebbel's sub from 1623 -- minus the catapult. It just goes to show how much attention is given to small details in this show. Every episode is worth repeated viewings.

The best episode we've had in a while. Very funny and well structured, although it could've been more engaging. The ending was shocking, but unnecessary: the same sort of plot twist was used a few weeks ago with "The Sting," but there it was more effective, even if the episode wasn't as good holistically.

Now I understand why these episodes weren't aired in their original order; they suck. They are not up to the caliber as the majority of the other shows and Fox didn't want to give people more of a reason to stop watching it. So they saved them for last when there wasn't going to be any more show to tune in to.

It was pretty good. I liked it a lot better than the last few episodes. Nothing really rubbed me the wrong way. A few really good laughs, but not enough for a 5/5. Overall a very good story. It actually seemed like it would have worked better as a comic, but if it was a comic I would have said it would have worked good as an episode. I give it a 4, but it might be a little closer to a 4.5.

Average by futurama standards, which means excellent by most others.

The plot - Benders journey/what he learned on the way

The conclusion - moral of the story (perception of reality, what is real and what isn't)

The episode felt a little drawn out, even for just 21 minutes it felt that there just wasn't enough material in there. Futurama usually has A/B and even C stories running together, or else the highly intense 3 part episodes.

I feel this episode would have worked much better if there was something else going on in it.

There were some great jokes of course, the futurama universe was again expanded, and any fan of the show can spot the many interesting references etc... but overall it still lacked that killer content.

I'll watch it again anyway, it might be better on a second, either that or i'm not in a generous mood.

Lukewarm episode with a couple good jokes but a boring premise. I originally was thinking,"great, this episode will focus on the fun side of rapid technological paradigm shifts in a Rudy Rucker sort of way." as the X-1 was entered into society. But then things just veered off course, with Bender off to Cheap Joke Island. It all felt a bit silly. Ha ha, look at bender, he's made of wood, get it? Ohhhh, I get it!

I guess what annoys me is that for once, the idea that I had in my mind for this episode was better than the episode!

Probably my favorite Bender episode. Not that I have anything against Bender, but I prefer him in smaller bits. Probably a natural 3.5 by that standard.

But, throw in some really good jokes (my friends.., and zoidberg), especially the robots of robot island (for the person who asked, Sinclair is named after the Sinclair computer which sold for like $99 in the US (a british product, I think, it was the Timex-Sinclair in the US) in 1980, about $900 cheaper than the cheapest apple or IBM then, and at least $400 cheaper than a Kpro or some other minor computer. It had apprx 4k memory), and a great Rush reference and It's a solid 4.

Add to that, I think it was the most beautifully animated episode ever. I would love to give it a solid 4.5 or 9/10, but I can't give it a 100% (save that for the Why of Fry and The Sting), so its a 4

Great Episode! Is yet to be aired over here in Europe (Austria/ Germany/Switzerland),but the lipsync-ed version over here will definitely suck ass...However, I cannot understand all those people that criticize the show for "wimping out" or not being crazy enough anymore...Theres so much heart and warmth to these last Episodes, the wacky craziness has pulled back a little to make room for a more human/hopeful topics. I am happy with that shift of focus.I like to see the characters i have gotten to love thru their crazy adventures evolve, even if i had imagined some things differently...After all, the writers seem willing to give the series an uplifting end,and the "usual" craziness might spoil our belief, that Fry/Leela ect are genuine characters, able to experience things that are even remotely linked to (todays) life in general. That what they experience could have a deep message. Also, note that the average age of the writers/producers in this show is (according to my information) about 28. Maybe they just got tired of their routine-craziness and wanted to create (more) "real" characters and stories.

So long, sorry for the grammar and please spell check,

Krischan

Wow Wow...
A great episode but it leaves some question behind...
If the world is still build on capitalism and the Futurama world still very much seems like it, why would anyone still employ older robots, that run on alcohol that has to be bought instead of pollution, which is obviously still enough there in the year 3000
So, aren't all olders robot doomed to being dumped sooner than we might know? Not to mention to work attitude, which is greatly lacking to at least the bending units...
Well, luckily the series is over, coz i don't want to see bender gettin' wrecked.

Boring! This reminded me of that desert island Simpsons episode, especially the nonsensical ending.

It started off promisingly, with the robot fair (Mom's a great character, and it was good to see that the writers had remembered she's not supposed to be nasty in public), but as soon as the Professor bought the new robot it went downhill.

The idea of the three out of date robots was brilliant, but it's a shame that, apart from the cartridge robot, their weaknesses were forgotten after the opening scene.

I didn't like the idea of Bender being made of wood (although Leela's reaction to it was quite funny), and although I quite liked the 'it was all just part of the upgrade' ending, the bit outside the factory at the very end was just stupid. Oh, one more thing - I didn't like the scene with Bender out on the boat - it looked way too computer generated.

Overall, it wasn't a terrible episode, but the fact that it featured Bender practically all the way through didn't do it any favours.

This is a brilliant episode. Some of you are comparing it to the rather average 30% Iron chef, I'd say it's more worthy of comparision to an episode like Godfellas (both in quality and structure). I laughed alot during this episode, I thought Bender was particularly good. I loved the out-dated robots, especially the tape robot "What!?".
Other highlights were Farnsworth finally punching Wernstrom, the panic attacks that the water wheel robot has every time the water runs out, Wooden Bender, trying to find a socket for the blender, some cool CGI waves, and the brillaint ending.

aww man, although I know that Bender can be quite annoying.. seeing him falling apart as the wooden robot made me quite sad :'(
I keep thinking of this scene all day.

Plus roberto's voice is absolutely hilarious! :-D

The only things that I like about this show is:

Bender: Bite my shiny wooden ass!
Second, I like Amy's new hair do. It's cute. I am getting more than pissed off about the Fry/Leela/Zoidberg Episodes.
Robot 1x and Bender did seem to get along.

I really enjoyed this episode, I thought that it had some truly hilarious moments, and am surprised to read that some other don't rate it very highly.

Highlights include the water powered robot (that keeps screaming that this is the end and running into the sea just in time), the cartridge robot, Bender's line to Robot 1-X "When I screamed 'help', I didn't mean YOU" (I don't know why, it just made me laugh)... just so much great about this episode. Oh, and Bender crawling on his eyes to rescue his friends.

I wasn't too sure about the "dream" conclusion, and felt that the 1-X element could have been concluded in a more final way, but that's minor niggles in what is one of my favourite late episodes of the series.

Perhaps this is just my interpretation, but for anyone who has ever had an LSD experience, I believe this episode may have been inspired by an LSD trip. The whole theme of the episode, along with many quotes, lead me to this seemingly far-fetched conclusion.

LSD tends to make one appreciate the simple, naturalistic qualities of life while rejecting technology and consumption, which Bender begins to appreciate during his time on the primitive island. Quotes such as, "Why watch TV when you can watch a snail crawl for hours on end?" or "CD's are unnatural. Why don't you just listen to the ocean?" echo this view. One also finds the urge to emancipate others from the business and complication of modern life after the experience, such as Bender does near the end of the episode.

LSD also has the tendency to make a tremendous impact on one's personality and outlook after the experience. Before seeing this episode, I had often referred to the experience as an "upgrade", which I believe cemented the connection in my mind further. Using the LSD interpretation, the ending makes MUCH more sense and is much more satisfying when viewed this way, as these experiences often feel as real as Bender's upgrade did.

"If that stuff wasn't real, how can I be sure anything is real? Is it not possible, nay probable, that my whole life is just a product of my or someone else's imagination?"

Again, anyone who has not used this drug in the past could not possibly understand or accept this interpretation, and I realize that. If you are one of these people, please do not tell me that my head is fried to come to these conclusions either. It has been a long while since I've ingested the drug, but even upon subsequent viewings, it appears to be a plausible explanation, especially with the subtle psychedelic drug references in previous episodes (30% Iron Chef with the "secret ingredient" being LSD, The Problem With Popplers quote, "I used to find edible mushrooms on my bathmat!" etc.)

I'm curious if anyone else accepts this interpretation?

Upon first watching this, the "it was all a dream" ending seemed a bit of a cop-out. But if you view it as a scenario designed solely to change Bender's mind, it's pretty clever. Not one of the great episodes, but there's plenty to enjoy, mainly the water-powered robot's continual struggle. And the brief glimpse of Bender's view of the world at the end is well worth hanging on for.
