Matt Groening isn't the best writer around, This and the second episode seems to have suffered a fair bit due to him. Hopefully in the future he will step back and allow the real writers to do their job.

Loved it, thought it was a great introduction back into the series, and though a little tedious at times, most of the jokes were funny. Fantastic twist towards the end with Fry as well - overall, though it could have been better, I thought it was well done.

An awesome return to the series. While the episode had some "what?" moments, it really didn't hurt the episode as a whole. It was a great mix of good humor and a good plot so I commend the episode for that! Welcome back Futurama!

An awesome return to episodic Futurama. The Fry/Leela stuff does my shippy heart good, and Bender's subplot is pretty funny. The episode does enter the realm of melodrama at points--but the same could be said for classics from the original run ("Time Keeps on Slipping", "The Luck of the Fryrish"). Part of what I love about Futurama, after all, is the versatility: the best episodes contain humor and heart in fairly equal measure. And, in that respect, "Rebirth" does not disappoint.

I just finished watching this episode at 4.30am in the UK and loved it so much! Sure it wasn't the best episode ever but it was a stunning opener and so funny. Just proved precisely what I feared wasn't true, what with The Simpsons or 'The Pimpsons' ;) and Family Guy losing its credibility so much over the past few seasons, it shows animated shows aren't dead. Futurama is definitely my favourite animated show, I love it to pieces and cannot wait for future episodes!

if matt groening is the needle in the haystack of writing for these episodes, he should get the fuck out. I like the professurs backwards way of talking, "theres always hope! shut up there is no hope!" that is funny is hell. and its nice to see leela not be such a bitch to fry and give him his turn up to bat. on the whole it was a really good episode, they didnt stray from what made futurama popular. which will make a lot of fans happy. including me.

I thought it was a great start into a new season. Definitely felt like Futurama used to feel. Didn't see the Fry plot twist coming. Liked it. For the next episodes/seasons, I'm looking for a slightly higher punchline rate and a bit more freeze frame fun. Still: 5/5 points

it was a good way to return to the series but theres one thing im gunna miss. A major part of Futurama that made me love it was the constant struggle Fry had to get the girl of his dreams, Leela. But now that they are together, I dont know how those heart tugging episodes can return

I am a huge futurama fan, I can remember the anticipation my wife and I had for the release of volume 4 which we had missed when they aired the first time, and because of great expectations how we felt the show was in decline, but after watching those episodes dozens of times now we consider volume 4 as the best of the series. Long story short I rewatched this episode and the overall quality was as good if not better than ever, and the one liners are lol funny and plentiful. Up to this point the reviews on first 2 episodes are a result of delusional expectations, please people rewatch these episodes and you will find the art.

I wasn't that impressed. I hope they go back to focusing on humor rather than social commentary and network bashing next week. Leela acted out of character in episode 2, and the actors timing was a little off. I assume they're just out of practice and it will get better.

Unfortunately it wasn't the best futurama episode. There were funny moments throughout but it could be improved. Although I might just be delirious from excessive partying and anticipation. I'm happy with them. I expected the first episode to have some recap, some material getting new viewers up to speed, and less depth than a normal episode... and that's what I saw.

The second one seemed to be getting back into the groove of the series. Felt more like a regular episode. I expect this trend to continue with upcoming episodes.

With the quality of the previous series', it's easy to set yourself up to expect the new series to be as good as all your favorite episodes combined plus 10 years worth of compound interest... which isn't really attainable. While I highly anticipated the new release, I tried not to have too specific expectations, and I wasn't disappointed.

Wow the moment I have been dreaming of for 7 years. I was disapointed though. I give the episode a 3 because its a comedy and it made me laugh a couple of times. Is it anywhere near the quality of the series? No, it isnt. I'll tell you what I want. Fry, Leela and Bender going on deliveries together. This was a weak storyline that lacked any flow. Now it is the first episode in a long time, so I am not going to point the finger at anyone. It will take time but I wasnt impressed. The storyline was average but I didnt see robot fry coming and it was a nice suprise. Bender partying...funny yet too silly. It dragged on. Good effort Futurama but this really needs to get better before I can consider its rebirth to be a success. It is all about the feel of the characters. The story and jokes are close.

Why is everyone complaining that the new episodes were bad? I loved it! This episode was great and deserves nothing short of a 90%. People shouldn't have raised their expectations so high to the point that they thought episode was going to be the best one ever. I enjoyed the ep, I liked the plot twists and there were some pretty funny moments. It sort of took the piss out of itself which was good, the build a bot thing was clool. I also liked Zapp sliding across at the end. Some jokes did fall a bit flat though, and I didn't think it was as good as the original run, but better than movie quality, so what I expected really. There's one joke I really think they should have "Futurama'd up" a little... When fry says, "Leela? Leela, Leela?" She should have replied, "Leela Leela, Leela."

They're good at taking repetition a step too far... 2 'Leela's left me hanging.

I thought this episode was a little odd, but I was well aware that it had to be that way to smooth over the story from the last movie. So, it was fine. And as it went along, and things were explained, it seemed to make perfect sense - for a Futurama episode, anyway. In the end, everything seemed to be pretty back to normal, and all the characters seemed to be just the same as ever - which is just what I wanted to see. I really enjoyed this episode but was quite saddened that Inagaddadeleela didn't keep up that same old Futurama style that I was so eager to see again.

Eh, I don't know about this. It's really nice to see the characters again, and there are funny bits, but this just doesn't seem as good as the show was back when it produced such gems as Rosewell That Ends Well or Jurassic Bark.

The humor is more crude, more stupid. Leela's character has changed, she's not the level headed individual she used to be. Then again there were times in the show when she was an alcoholic nutjob.

I hope it's just the show trying to hit its stride again and that they'll return to the more intelligent humor soon. I wasn't impressed with the last 3 movies though and maybe that's where Groening and Co want to take it. We'll see what happens in time.

Rebirth is an outstanding return for Futurama. The writers beat all dissenters with an episode that simultaneously has incredibly funny dialogue (Leela says "As long as Robo-Leela isn't a jealous type like me, things'll" only to be interrupted by Robo-Leela saying "I'll kill you, you Slut-clops!") and a fantastically well-done main plot about what it really means to be you (Robo-Leela is Leela, even if she doesn't have the meat to back it up). Bravo!

A very good summary of the finale of Into the Wild Green Yonder and a great work on both dealing with the aftermath properly and making a new story in only 22 minutes. A hard work, and still done with both emotions and humour. Together with In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela a perfect start of the new season.

A somewhat shakey start to the new season but a strong one nonetheless. The pacing is far too fast and the plot is a little all over the place. Anyone who thought this was a good episode is blind, or too desperate for Futurama.

There were so many errors, from errors about the characters' past (Fry comments on his "College Years") to blind forgetfulness of previous episodes (Fry & the Professor refer to Stem Cells as controversial just to get "political" despite the fact that they've appeared on the show before...)

The beauty of Futurama was that there was 1,000 years for all the political CRAP to be over with. Futurama WAS witty and politically neutral, now it's purposely edgy, with stupid bits of sexual humor (professor slaps Amy's ass).

It's like the old writers are gone, replaced with Family Guy writers.

Im glad its back. First episode was quite good, but it felt like it was done in hurry or something, i dont know, maybe little different. I hope that they build some sort of background plot, something like what they had in previous seasons: fry's brain thing, nibbler etc. First two episodes were good, but some jokes broke the "illusion" that futurama takes place in future. like when zapp wanted to zoom v-giny on the screen, and was all blurry, he mentioned csi miami or something, That joke was just so stupid, i hated it. And other thing when professor introduced v-giny thing to other crew, bender mentioned something like "ass-o-rama" and "pimpsons", i think those are too obviuos refrencies to real life and this time. Well those were actual from second episode, but u get my idea.

I'm upset that they continued the (subpar) storyline from the movies, why couldn't they just go back to plots being self contained in one episode? Beyond that the jokes were forced, almost as if they had a premade list of gags they had to fit into the storyline. I was hoping they'd go back to smart, subtle, socially relevant jokes that play on the dialogue and interweaving stories. I don't know if they felt the need to be edgier and more straightforward this time around, but I hope it gets better...

Lame. The "jokes" were all set pieces that telegraphed their intention parsecs away. It was almost like watching Bill Cosby.

The idea that there needs to be a running storyline is also antithetical to the original Futurama.

Jumped the shark for sure...

I'm happy to have Futurama back, but I fear it'll never be the great show it used to be. The writing has been repetitive, dumbed down, and over-the-top ever since the first movie. Unfortunately, nobody seems willing or able to make Futurama an intelligent show again. At least The Simpson got 8 or 9 high quality seasons in before it turned stupid.

It was okay. Overall, though, I think they should have viewed this episode as a series pilot as opposed to a wrap-up/reintroduction episode.

I really don't understand why some people are poo-pooing this episode. The story had to tie up loose-ends from the movies which(other than parts of Bender's Big Score) were overall subpar.

I noticed one person didn't like that they mentioned Fry's college years: Not a continuity error. Fry attended both Coney Island College (1990s) and Mars Univeristy (3000s).

Yes, it is a different sort of episode but relationships have progressed. Think of how jealous Bender was when Fry tried to bring Seymore back...now think of how jealous he's going to be if Fry and Leela become a real item.

I could go on and on about this as I'm sure everyone here could.

Anyway, not in the top ten best of all time, but better than the forgettable episodes.

We're back baby!

Funny to read how people either love or hate new futurama. I guess we all love futurama for different reasons... but for me it's just not the same. I never liked the dvd's and these new episodes seem to be going down the same road. Fry used to be 'cool' dumb, now he seems 'pathetic' dumb. Leela is sleeping with zap after 2 episodes, after hating him for years! Such a shame, I LOVED Futurama but who can honestly say it's as good as it used to be... really hoping the old writers get things back on track. Do you have an extra goto 10 line?

I've been waiting 7 years for this, and THANK GOD, it delivered very well (for me anyway). I was surprised at how the chemistry between Fry and Leela worked so well, obviously the writers knew what they were doing when they wrote this, just as usual. A great story to kick off Futurama into its new season, it was a real Sci-Fi one, and the comedy was fresh and very funny, because it kept true to Futurama's language of comedy. Some people including me were slightly worried that Futurama would have lost its touch by now, but I think it's safe to say that it passed the test. Bender's side story was great, I didn't think that because of the main story being so epic, they'd be able to fit in a side story but wrong again, they succeeded in doing so. All characters were great to see again, and their voices were the same as when they left. I loved the plot twist near the end, however complicated it got. But the only thing in Futurama lately that's been worrying me is that the Sci-Fi element is beginning to sound like they're not making sense. Maybe it's just me but it has happened more than once, but that's the only minor issue I've got at the moment, the next episode was very funny as well, Futurama is truly back and biting Shiny Metal Ass!

I thought it was a good episode for what it was. Watching this though made me realized how much the character have changed from the first season(as characters seem to do in many other animated cartoons). I hope Fry goes back to his old self, this "romantic fry" is being overdone in my opinion.

A decent, if over-plotted return for Futurama.

Getting over the intial bliss of seeing it back on air it seemed as if the're wasn't enough time to get all the plot in.
Devoting so much time to explaining what had happened before starting the real plot (the Fry and Leela robots) seems like too much for one episode.
There was definitely a great episode in there but it was too heavily bookended by set-up and exposition.

Funny, though. VERY funny. I just know it could have been a little better.

Ok,
I have now watched this episode 3-4 times and after the initial disappointment it has slowly started to grow on me. My main problem was the relationship between Fry and Leela. It all seemed a bit on the quick side for me>>> All of a sudden Leela is pronouncing her love for Fry...in past series she has always been more reserved and cautious. In fact what i loved about their relationship in the past was that they never really get there. At least at the end of 'the devils hands' the ending was quite ambiguous. I LOVED IT :]

All in all there were some pretty funny moments that gave hope for development in future episodes. The last few seconds of the episode when Zapp flew out of the stem cell machine whilst 'whooooing' had me in stitches. Also little things like when they were running away from the cyclops eater and Bender is doing cartwheels was brilliant.

So why has the dynamic between Fry and Leela been so drastically altered in this series??? New writers??? New Network???

I enjoyed Rebirth quite a bit. There were a number of great gags, especially from Farnsworth, and Fry's "Robot Leela" story was pretty well-done. Bender's small subplot was fun too, mainly since they didn't dwell on it too long, and the twist took me by complete surprise.

The concept of the birthing machines sort of trivializes the concept of death in Futurama though...I wonder how they'll make us concerned about the crew's lives again?

It's not a classic but since when are season openers ever (Star Treck the next generation, the 2005 comeback of Doctor Who, I'm a huge Doctor Who fan and that episode sucked compared to Rebirth). As a standalone episode, this isn't great, but as an episode that acts as a series "revival" in more ways than one, it gets the job done both in reintroducing the series and letting the writing staff get their groove back. So it's a scattered episode in terms of humor and plot, but as a self-referential commentary on the series' revival, this was a fun episode to kick things back up.
