Not a bad episode, but one I would have buried three or four weeks in to the new season. Perhaps Comedy Central gave away too much of the plot in the trailers, but this is essentially the same paradigm as "Prisoner of Benda," only with deity-like rock monster instead of brain-switch machine. And the gender stereotypes were too cute by half. My suspicion is those who make such decisions read the log line, figured the show would be in some way titillating -- which given Leela's outfit, I guess it was -- bumped it to the season opener slot.

And in case you're wondering, no hater am I. Last season got almost all 5-star ratings from me. Still, they hit it out of the park with "Benderama." The few I thought were kinda weak (X-mas Special springs immediately to mind), I refrained from criticizing in case idiot tee-vee executives read the reviews. But now that we know Futurama has at least two more seasons -- and, let's face it, probably more -- I guess I feel it's safe to be honest.

That said, wa-a-ay too many people were leaving 1- and 2-star reviews last year. Perhaps they loved it as a child when they watched Futurama during its first run on Fox, only to discover the same things they saw as hilarious as kids just weren't the same as they hit college. I loved Peanuts as a kid, and it made me laugh out loud often. I still love Peanuts, but even when Sparky was still alive, Charlie and the gang had long since ceased to break me up in the same way.

The return of Futurama continues to disappoint. I had hoped that last season's run of mostly mediocre episodes was simply the staff rediscovering their stride, but that does not seem to be the case. These episodes have turned into the meandering, plotless messes that you find in later Simpson's episodes. They seemed to have abandoned the idea of three act comedy completely. Instead most of these new episodes seem like a "Tales of Interest" episode done over a single theme without any real effort made to build to a climax and find a solid resolution. The jokes are either a sad attempt at vulgarity or boring cliches. A clearance sale joke? Really? Mocking stereotypes and traditional gender roles is something that Futurama did so well in their first run, especially with Leela that it pains me even more to see such tired lowbrow jokes thrown together. And I have no problem with a little vulgar humor, but Futurama has never used shock humor for such a large percentage of their attempted laugh lines. The best thing that Futurama could do to bring this show back to its past glory would be to hire some of the old Fox censors as consultants. They forced the writers to use clever dialogue and witty innuendo instead of in your face vulgarity.
I realize this is a fan site and I apologize to anyone who may take offense to my disparaging remarks, but Futurama was mine and my wife's favorite show for so long that I have to say something about how terrible these new episodes are. After watching tonight's first new episode, my wife asked me to just let the Tivo record the second and not to watch it because it is just too depressing. And for the record, I'm 30 years old and while I did watch and love Futurama during its original broadcasts, I have also watched the DVD's and syndicated reruns countless times since, so I don't believe that my current displeasure with the show has anything to do with my tastes changing as I've grown older.
Please David Cohen, it is time to rethink the staff changes. The franchise is going in the toilet and it pains me so much to watch it go.

I don't think they should have promoted this episode so much with the Gender switching, as it was only a small part of the main plot.

That aside, it was a really good episode. I've got high hopes for this season and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Scruffy at the end made the episode. Fantastic.

This episode was marked a terrific return to form. Great professor jokes, and everything wrapped up fantastically well at the end. Despite sharing some similarities to Prisoner Of Benda, this is a good standard of episode that with any luck the rest of this season will keep.

A great men/woman cliche episode with funny moments and a deeper observation about Hermes and LaBarbara relantionship, that was the best. Too bad that there's so less time when all men become woman; I'll like to see how Fry and Leela would look as a couple with this switch.
Keep going with the new episodes you doing great!

Ugh... I live by futurama, and a handful of episodes from last year were so promising (late philip j fry was probably my all time favorite episode, so I am open to the new episodes). This is a plotless one-liner gag episode like the simpsons degraded into.

The best episodes have an actual story to them. I hope there are a few gems this season.

I kinda expected more from this episode, but I admit it gave me some surprises and like many have been saying, a good nod to traditional Star Trek episodes.

But the whole thing with them switching gender was way way too short. Hardly five minutes at the end and so much was left to the imagination. But Leela and LaBarbara look pretty cool as dudes. And Man-Amy's Abs...the stuff Nightmares were made of....until I saw the Professor's photo shoot. I've been scarred.

But decent episode all around.

Improvement over last season. Sharper one-liners ("What are we, Mercury?"). Don't get me wrong, I love Bender, but maybe some new characters should be developed? I think most folks are aware that Bender drinks, parties, steals and possesses a lustrous behind - all admirable qualities - and it seems like every other episode is about Bender. He has become a...uh...cartoon of himself.

Better writing seems to help in any event. I mean, when Farnsworth isn't funny, something's wrong. Damn wrong.

Whilst this was not up to the standard of TLPJF or RTEW, it was easily one of the best episodes. It's got some great visuals, a couple of fantastic nerd jokes, and the wonderfully disgusting sight of the Professor's drooping funbags flying past his shoulders as he poses for a girlie calender. It feels very much like a season 3 episode in terms of tone and pacing, but I can forgive it for that. There could've been more jokes made, but I can forgive them for that too. They got in a brilliant unexpected one with Hermes line "Ooh, your manwich!" and it remains to be seen whether Scruffy is now permanently gender-switched, which would be a nice continuity-nerd bonus. Zapp's cameo was also sheer gold. Not much wrong with this episode, but there really could've been more time spent exploring the concept of being totally gender neutral. That's always been a good sci-fi topic. Oh, and I was very very annoyed that the female scientist didn't get referred to as "Doctor Goodnsexy" again. I waited all episode for that, and it didn't happen. :(

thoroughly entertaining. it felt like it could have been in one of the comic books, and that's how I usually judge whether or not something is good. I would have liked the introduction of one or two new characters instead of using all people we've seen before, like the nurse from bender's big score and the chick the professor dated in three hundred big boys, who seem odd in their sudden reappearances.

I thought this was a great episode. It had a lot of humour and a clear plot; both of which were mostly missing from the last season. I thought it was good the whole way through. Funny gags, and I felt that the story "worked". I thought it was much better than 'Benderama'.

There was just one big issue, I wish that the episode could've been 5-10 minutes longer. To be able to explore the reversed genders.
But then "Colonel Alien" came and saved the day. I don't blame the producers though, just wish that some epiodes could be longer.

Neutopia got some flaws, like predictable jokes (in act 2), breaking the laws of physics (airplane in space? with propellers? Really?:/ )and too rushed ending, but it's overall good episode. After first view I wanted give 4/5, but I watched it again and again and I liked it much better than the first time. So the rewatchability is good, and the there are truly hillarious moments in it, the beginning for example.

Starts off strong but the episode quickly loses momentum. The gender stereotyping jokes were done much better in "Amazon Women in the Mood", and here, many of these jokes were cringe-worthy.
The humor becomes a lot more creative in the second half when gender is quite literally made a non-issue, but this part is short lived.
Overall, it had quite a few strong jokes, but a lot of misses, and the core storyline felt rushed and unfocused.
Also, since the move to Comedy Central, the disconcerting trend of gross-out jokes for shock value continues. I'm not against this type of humor (long time fan of South Park) but it still feels extremely out of place and this moments are generally more irksome than funny.

I was pretty diappointed with this episode.
The story could have been done with any tv series and was at times random (Zapp suddenly appearing).
There were very few character based jokes, most of them were very cheap clichees.

This was no good. IMO here are some pros and cons from the episode.

Pros
- Better premiere episode then Rebirth.
- Episode was better then the first five episodes of the previous season.
- Was funny at times.

Cons
- Relying on pop culture too much. References to the office and Desperate Housewives. This IMO goes agaisnt futurama. (However, liked Bender's T2 reference.)

-Felt tired. Premise reminded me too much of two greats Amazon Women In The Mood and Where No Fan Has Gone Before. Melvar and basketball fundamentals come to mind. The show has done this before. Also, gender swapping reminded me of mind swapping seen in Prisoner of Benda (another great.)

- Gross out humor overload. Is the less restrictions on Comedy Central going to this shows head?
- Pacing felt rushed.

-Overall, 2/5 Benderama was way better and should have been the premiere episode.

I suppose I should expect a crude, low-brow episode now and then, since the show is on Comedy Central now. Please, writers, don't think that you have to turn the show into Family Guy or South Park just because you can. I liked Futurama since the very first episode aired the very first time in 1999 and it makes me sad to see what is happening to it. If last season is any indication, they won't all be like this, I hope.

I found this episode to be both a little sluggish and a little lacking on the overall plot development. I felt the same about Benderama as well. I would be alarmed, but honestly I felt the Rebirth episode and In-a-Gadda-de-Leela were of the same calibur. I have hope for the middle episodes and hopefully a gem like the Late Great Philip J. Fry sneaks in. Bring back all the writers, to hell with the budget (and Turtles).

Fail.
Let me address those people who say "I don't understand why people are giving this a low score." Or who feel that we don't like the grown up Futurama...This new and strange creature that oddly goes by the title of Futurama has changed from a clever, witty and intelligent show to to a dumbed down TnA mule. Whoever wrote this episode, should stick to writing Twilight or whatever other teen driven drivel they came from. So if grown up = dumbed down, overly sexualised and mediocre, then I'll stick to my Peter Pan ways thanks.
Last season Futurama seemed to be steadily on the improve and I had great hopes that we were seeing the return of an awesome show...how wrong I was.

Futurama has never made me feel guilty to be watching it before. It's gone for low-brow laughs before, but they were sandwiched between jokes about quantum mechanics.

This was tired humor without enthusiasm and you could hear it in all the actors' voices. Not even Rule 63 on the P.E. crew came close to saving it.

I was glad to see later episodes seem to be rated higher. Maybe the next ones will be better.

To me, this was one of the better episodes of all time.
This may be because I count amongst the mentioned pervert fans, but could also be related to the fact that I deal with gender-specific behaviour on a daily basis.
Im my eyes, the story is a cute and smart persiflage on gender stereotypes - not completely without bias, but fairly observant anyway.

This episode is a real shame because it's very, very funny and has some wonderful aspects. The planet they visit is a beautiful location, one of the nicest in 'Futurama''s history, and both the gender-competition and gender-switching concepts had a lot of mileage in them, but one the other hand, I'm sick of episodes about Planet Express going out of business, we didn't get enough from either of those premises and the resolution is a horribly rushed deus ex machina. The episode would have benefited from picking either the gender-competition aspect or the gender-swapping one (my pick would be the former), and going with that for the majority of its runtime instead of cramming both in without doing either justice.

Anyway, due to its nice visuals and strong humour, it gets by. It's far from the best, but it's far from the worst. A good mid-level episode that stands its ground against mid-level episodes from the original run.

I'm actually surprised this ranks higher than "That's Lobstertainment", "A Leela of Her Own", and even "Yo Leela Leela"

Seriously. This is downright The worst episode of not only Futurama, but practically ranks down with some of the shit from Simpsons Season 11 and 12, as one of the Worst episodes of any Groening production.

It wasn't too terribly bad. The sound of that untalented Wanda Sykes really killed the episode for me. The lighting rod joke at the end was funny. The beginning with the Planet Express signal was entertaining also.

"Wasted potential" is a term I rarely associate with Futurama, but it applies here. First 2 acts were wasted on unfunny and overused boy-vs.-girl jokes, and by the time the awesome gender swap finally occurred, there were only 5 minutes left and no time for anything. Had it occurred 10 minutes earlier, this episode could've been great.

Most unfunny juvenile jokes packed with the worst pacing any futurama ep has suffered. I'm actually surprised this isnt the lowest rated ep here, cause honestly, this ep was downright cancer.

J. Stewart Burns can write circles around most people.

And once again he shines here.

The only reason it's rated so low is that all the sex stuff reminds all the loser fans how they never get laid.

One of the funniest eps.

I liked the premise of the characters changing gender/losing their gender and found the sex jokes funny. Also laughed at the fact that Female Scruffy still has a 'stache! 1 point off because the plot about the bet with the borax kid was weak.

Average episodes. The airline parody was pretty good, couple of good lines from the professor as well, but the gender quest by the stone creature was pretty weak. The should also have cut on the nudity (the funniest photos were Scruffy's, and he wasn't nude at all). Also, it didn't fit Leela to do the photo shoot.
