Bender embarks on a quest for the meaning of life after discovering that as a robot he lacks free will.

It was good... but not that great.

Had tons of callbacks and it was nice to see Fry and Leela in bed since they will pretty much be getting married next year.

Spoiler..oops, to late.

Easily a 4/5, but no 5/5.

For an episode from Cohen, this was mildly disappointing.

The first act felt totally wrong. There was just way too many unconnected scenes crammed together with hardly anyone other than Bender. It was nice seeing the Mafia again though.

The other acts were much better. I particularly liked the gag with Leela and the bowling ball (and might I say, she's good-looking with her hair down. )

Anyway, this episode had a good premise. It was a bit cheap having Bender shoot the Professor at the end though. It made the entire episode feel a bit pointless, but not in a good way like "Decision 3012".

Ultimately though, it was enjoyable to watch. They certainly could have come up with a better ending, but at least it didn't feel absurdly rushed like some other episodes.

I loved Mom's surprise chair, and the way she hugged Bender. That was adorable.

Anyway, this is a 7.5/10. Decent, but not particularly amazing.

To the episode's credit, I thought the concept was actually really good, but the execution was really lacking.

The major problem for me is that every scene is WAY to rushed. Every single scene comes and goes with no real build up, leaving the viewer little to no time to soak anything in. Plus the whole beginning with Bender and college felt so disjointed from the rest of the episode, it just came and went.

It's almost like they wanted to squeeze this into an hour long movie, but decided to make it a single episode, and the story suffered.

I'm personally not a fan of Bender episodes because I don't think he has enough substance to drive a whole story in and of himself, so I was biased towards disliking this one. All the other characters barely contribute to the episode, and that really bothered me.

I wanted to give this a 2, but I'll give it a 3 since the concept was nice and there wasn't much gratuitous violence, vulgarity, etc. However, I still expected much more from a Cohen episode. This was a huge downgrade from Fun on a Bun.

They definitely delivered on the funny with this one. Lots of very funny gags and props to the nostalgia of the robot planet.

The plot was definitely meant to be more thought provoking rather than significant or universe-changing, so I didn't mind. It was largely lightweight entertainment and I was fine with it.

I'm surprised that no one got the beginning. It felt rushed, but it was on purpose. It added to the beginning theme of every decision has a unique outcome. I found this exception hilarious, of Bender quickly going through everything! ANd I'm sick of all the fans being such dicks towards the show. CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE FUCKING EPISODES! 9/10

An excellent concept that mostly delivered. Acts 1 and 3 were filled with fast-paced laughs and story turns, with brief-but-always-welcome roles by Mom and the Robot Maia, but Act 2 on the robot planet dragged on to the point of boredom. It started off interesting but the monks killed the momentum. Thankfully, only 3 or 4 minutes were spent on that before we got back to the goodness. And the endings this season have been weak, but damn, I could not stop laughing at that Bender/Farnsworth resolution. Really solid story that started strong, dragged a bit in the middle, and ended strong.

I'm even more sick of all the fans blindly praising the show. I love Futurama, but when an episode has flaws, I'm going to point them out. Criticism does not equal trolling. It's okay if someone doesn't like an episode, as long as they intelligently explain the problems they had with it.

As for the episode itself, it was a neat idea, but the pacing was the worst I've seen in a long time. I don't know why, but the majority of the endings this season have been really rushed. As stated above, the robot monks was boring and didn't do anything for me. I was just waiting for a punchline that didn't come.

Also, what was with the pointless scene with Fry and Leela in bed? What did that add? It's almost like the writers are sick of the all the shippers whining about those two. This whole season has had a lot of pointless moments like those, sort of like an apology for last season's inconsistent writing. Fry/Leela episodes are some of my favorites of the entire series because it isn't something you see every episode. I always liked how those episodes were rare enough that they were special to watch but no so rare that we lost interest. Fun on a Bun was great in that respect, so I hope we can wait with the Fry/Leela scenes, let it build, so the next one will be even better.

I've liked most of the episodes this season, but thought this one was a disappointment. The pacing was an issue, but mostly because the episode didn't seem to know which direction it wanted to go in.

As a result, the characters ended up making decisions that didn't make much sense: why did Bender decide to join a gang (and why exactly would he meet a street gang in college, of all places)? Why did the previously utterly incompetent hyperchicken suddenly become an able defense attorney? Why did Bender decide to rob Mom Corp without figuring out if the free will unit even existed? And why would the professor decide to randomly give Bender the free will unit after spending his life hiding it from him?

There were also a bunch of superfluous scenes that didn't add much to the story, but definitely jerked it up short. The whole wandering Bender montage ended up weirdly split in the middle when he decided to stop off to talk to the robot elders, for some reason. The gang scene seemed random and stitched together, yet existed only to get Bender in front of a judge... something that could have been done much more simply and quickly. And the end seemed abrupt, without Bender actually learning anything about free will.

The episode definitely had some good funny moments in it. I just felt that it squandered its potential.

POSITIVES:
-The free will celebration at the end
-Leela and Fry in bed, since it looked as if Fry was alone
-The return of the Robot Mafia
-Finally a freaking delivery was made in Season 7

NEGATIVES:

-It was a disappointment from DXC to have Bender only in the beginning, only to have it rushed.
-Kind of stupid that Bender wanted to shoot the Proffesor when he had his Free Will already after the Proffesor gave it to him.

I feel this episode deserves a 3

As I've said in the past, when it comes to writting Bender stories they are usually hit or miss. This one somehow lands in the middle. I remembered plenty of times where I laughed which could only due to the work of the great David X Cohen. Needless to say, the only flaw this episode really had was that it suffered from the same flaw as The Butterjunk Effect; a rushed ending.
Regardless, I enjoyed just enough.

7/10

Oh, and Fry and Leela in bed together.....NICE!!!!

Normally, I enjoy the few times co-creator David X. Cohen actually writes an episode (XMAS STORY is one of my favorites by him), but this was probably his weakest script. The idea is interesting, but it really just sums up to a punchline and no substance ("You made me go on a soul searching Journey...I HATE THOSE!!").

THE GOOD--
-Returning to the Robot Planet.
-Mom's cameo.
-The Robot Monk scene (yea I laugh at those jokes).
-The Return of the Robot Elders.
-The overstuffed first act (which seems more a comment on Fan complaints about story pacing than an actual joke setup; made sense to me).
-Fry stealing Leela's "Go-To" Line: "Oh, Lord."

THE BAD--
-Weak writing that doesn't live up to the idea.
-Not enough of Robot Mafia.
-Not enough Zoidberg.

THE AWESOME--

--Leela naked in bed with Fry, hair down. A fantasy now seen...Man, was I smiling hard during that scene!! My face is still sore.

So......average episode.

Where to start? First of all, the first seven minutes were HORRIBLE! It contributed very little to the story, and it wasn't funny at all. Seriously, I didn't laugh at all until the first act was over. The story in the very beginning was also really terrible; the whole thing with him joining college and then a gang could've been replaced by Bender simply robbing a store as usual, and to much better effect. This would've benefited the story tons, because they could extend the good scenes in the second and third act (the invasion of MomCorp seemed particularly rushed). And actually, the second and third act were really, really good. It basically consisted of great gag after great gag (Fry and Leela sleeping with each other was the biggest laugh we got all season), and the story was really interesting. Oh, and it even used slapstick to good effect! That might be a first for Futurama. I was debating between giving this a 3 or a 4, and I probably would've given it a 4 had the first act been so horrible! If you can get through it, you'll be sufficiently entertained, but does it make it worth sitting through the first act? Not quite.

Brilliant episode written by one of the brilliant masterminds behind this show. Also, the beginning wasn't pointless, it was showing ways in how he doesn't have free will, the episode wouldn't have been as good without it, and wouldn't have made as much sense.

Not a bad episode. Agreed, there were certainly pacing issues, but there were plenty of good moments to balance them out. Wow. I really didn't expect this episode to be disliked as much as it is. For me, it's my favourite episode so far this season. It felt like classic futurama to me (I know that's the cliche reason for liking an episode people use when they can't come up with a real reason, but yeah.). It was evenly funny throughout, Leela falling asleep at the courtroom was especially hilarious to me, for some reason, it had some fanservice, the plot was good in my opinion, and I enjoyed the callbacks.

I think the people complaining that the first 5 minutes was too crowded might have been missing the point. Bender was supposed to have the most ridiculously bizarre day ever, to emphasize the point that no matter what he does, it's all pointless. (as evidenced by Fry's (Or Hermes', I forget) line, 'that was quite a day!' which made me laugh). There were some parts that dragged, the bit with the robot elders seemed purely to be a "heh, remember THESE guys?!?!?!?!" moment, and it wasn't really funny. But I did like them going back to that planet in general, as it made sense for the story. Also, does anyone else feel a bit of weight lift off of their shoulders when the crew actually makes a delivery? I don't know if I actually care that much, or I just care that everyone complains about it. In any case, I felt happy after that bit.

I also loved the bit where they were searching through Mom's labs. In my opinion, there need to be more stories that focus purely on the relationship and chemistry of the trio of Fry, Leela and Bender, so I always love it when those three get their moment.

It was... ok I guess? I'm a little bit disturbed by the fact that the writers seem to be running a bit low on ideas for settings and jokes. The scripts this season are becoming pretty heavily self-referential, and that is usually a herald of the decline of a show's quality. Hopefully that is not the case.

For a Bender episode this was somewhat poor in my opinion. The first part seemed really rushed and strung together, which I suppose was the joke, but it fell flat due to the fact it just wasn't that funny.

The rest of the episode was mediocre at best, with the odd laugh to be had here and there, but overall not a particularly good episode that seemed to have too many new things to it while trying to have prominent reference to previous episodes at the same time (in my opinion you can have one or the other, not both).

While I'm on the subject of references to older episodes though, I have been enjoying the abundance of these references in this new series but I do wonder if they're doing it for nostalgia or if there's something more sinister going on.

I'm sure they didn't make so many clear-cut references to old episodes in the last season, so why they're suddenly having nostalgia overload is unknown to me but comes across as largely suspect in nature (if I was to throw an outrageous claim out there that's complete speculation on my part, perhaps they're thinking the show won't get renewed any further than it has so they're wrapping it up with nostalgia).

A very thought provoking episode on free will, an important philosophical area. But it was a little too serious in parts, and I didn't like the mean-spirited violence at the end when Bender shoots the Professor. I don't usually re-review, but my opinion changed enough on a rewatch that I feel it's suited here. I love the high concept of this episode, but it just doesn't deliver on its potential. The first act is a brilliant set-up, but it then comes to a screeching halt and turns what SHOULD be an interesting philosophical adventure into a real bore. The episode is then salvaged again with the MomCorp infiltration, complete with hilarious sight gags, but the free will chip is a surprisingly uncreative answer for a show that usually has a clever explanation for everything. Bender zapping Farnsworth left me laughing at the end, yet a little unsatisfied at the same time.

from this episode to the second last, I am seriouslly disheartend where futurama has gone. I am a serious fan... fanatical fan. I do love futurama but it's like they are not even trying. With episodes like this, i fear that it will be cancelled again. Where is the brilliance that season six had, and the sun like shining of a shinny metal arse that was seasons 1 to 4, some of 5 and most of 6! It was alright, definately better than some other episodes in this season. But the concept of this episode was a bit flawed. In the pilot episode, Space Pilot 3000, Bender was allowed to derive from his programing when he is electricuted by the lightbulb's dangling wire. This brings up the theory that Bender did have free will all along.

This is a very interesting episode, yet in the fact that it feels very philosophical. I wouldn't say it made me cry, but for some reason it did really hit me emotionally. The idea of Robots searching for free will is a fascinating concept - Bender feels like he doesn't know what to do, yet then comes across a new chapter where he gets accepted by a church and becomes part of the Monk robots. I liked the revelation when found out about Mom and Farnsworth, and yet even Mom not being a villain in this one, but neither was Farnsworth. It felt nice to revisit Chapek 9 after a very long time and I liked the dark tone. Great work from David X. Cohen once again.
