A very good episode oveall, with some great jokes, though the origin of the music was somewhat dissapponting. But I did get a little teary eyed at the ending. An easy 4.

The best of the season so far, an instant classic in my opinion! Lots of funny gags and for once this year I didn't see the ending coming. The ending was so good that it actually had me teary eyed. I had high hopes for this one from the beginning and it didn't disappoint!!

Another heart-warming character/plot revealing episode whose premise was creative (though quite anticlimactic) but whose plot was secondary to the character interactions and development; it's amazing how these characters can still be examined and developed even after so many episodes.
And, finally, an old Easter Egg from Seymour's first appearance is finally explained: In the original Seymour episode, Fry is shown being frozen in the cryogenics lab with his AND Nibbler's shadow under the desk (as a result of the Infosphere episode). BUT, upon entering the room, a SECOND Nibblonian antenna-eye can be seen in the garbage can. Tonight's episode resolved the question of "whose antenna is that?"; one has to wonder if this episode was planned from the point of the original writing of the Seymour episode (during the early 2000s, 7 or 8 years ago), or if the creators realized / remembered the Easter Egg and chose to write this episode recently to explain it.

Have not been this emotional at the ending of a "Futurama" episode ever. Not even "Jurassic Bark" and "Luck of the Fryrish" could do that for me. Glad we finally got closure on Fry and his mom's relationship and learned how she really felt about him. Amazing episode. You have to put this one in the top ten all-time.

One of the best this season. Although I didn't line the explanation the ending made up for it big time. Finally a five star episode first of the season

Easily on the top 20 episode list.
The pacing was fast like in the old days.
Each and every joke played.
Even the Seth cameo was funny!

Fry and his Mom both getting real closure through a dream she actually had in the past moved me deeply.
I cried like a baby at the end.

Mike Rowe finally proved his keep.

A 10/10.

This episode was a bit light on the comedy but the touching story more than made up for it. Seymour's return was nice to see and this episode let us get a deeper glimpse of Fry and his mom. The ending made this episode what it was and it's a prime example of what this show does so well. Suburb.

Definitely one of the best plots of the season, although it tried too hard to match the emotion of "Fryrish" and "Bark." But I loved the look back at 1999.

I just wish it were funnier. Zoidberg's rickshaw was the only really good laugh.

A clunky, poorly paced story that tries to replicate the emotional impact of episodes like Jurassic Bark and Luck of the Fryrish, but pales in comparison.
Very few laughs to be had and the big reveal that it builds up to is disappointing and nonsensical. The only redeeming moment is the final scene with Fry and his mother, but even this highpoint feels unearned and emotionally manipulative because of the mediocrity that precedes it.

Great episode. Every time they go back to the "1999" well, I get chills. The tone sound was cool on my sound system, by the way. Loved the Seymour stuff, which wasn't overdone and therefore did not trample on the legacy of "Jurassic Bark" (so please STFU about it now, fanboys). I especially thought Seth McFarlane's one-liner was extremely well-done. Easily the best episode of the season from a plot standpoint. Not the funniest of the season, but I'll trade it in for one final emotional episode (although I'm sure the finale will pack in some emotion).

Reposted from PEEL:

I have to say, this episode was heaped full of fan service, and I loved it. It had a futuristic premise, a decent stream of gags (I particularly liked Mt. Shushmore big grin) and a well-written story that was fairly touching. The plotline with Fry's mother (who I wish had a name; I can't stand calling her "Mrs. Fry" hmpf ) was admittedly a bit predictable. I'll let that slide though, since this is only the second time Futurama has dug into the dreams and it's certainly nothing like "The Sting".

One thing I really liked was how the story didn't lessen the sadness/emotion spawned from "Jurassic Bark" and "The Luck of the Fryrish" by screwing with the timeline (BBS style) or cheapening Seymour's tragic departure. In fact, I loved how Seymour was what made Fry suddenly realise that he did in fact miss his old life. It felt like a nod to the many who consider "Jurassic Bark" to be one of the best episodes of the show.

Also, this episode only adds to the sheer amount of craziness that occured in that famous cryogenics lab on December 31st, 1999. It's undoubtedly my favourite recurring location on the show because of all the excellent stories it produces.

I won't say this was the funniest of the season, but I was giggling on more than a few occasions which puts it ahead of the likes of "Calcuon 2.0" and "T.: The Terriestrial" by default. Most of my enjoyment of this episode came from general entertainment as opposed to sheer laughter. And boy, was it entertaining. I particularly liked everything on the way to the cryogenics lab, such as Fry's reactions to some of the repeated lines. "I.C Weiner? Aw, crud. Every time!" big grin

But yes, that's probably enough typing for now. Other stuff I loved:

-Agnew with no pants. tongue
-"Philip, have you lost weight?"
-"It's the sound the game makes when you get the all-time lowest score..."
-Michelle being a bitch and Leela pushing him into leaving her.
-The luxury Vehicle Bender asked for was amazing.
-"I always forget he can talk" Finally, some acknowledgement that Nibbler's been MIA for so long.
-Seymour shrinking into Fry's pocket was neat.

I'm suspecting this is my favourite episode of season 7. First impression says 10/10. They've really been kicking it off these past few episodes; lets hope the quality continues.

After writing 5 terrible episodes and one merely decent one (Fry Am the Egg Man), Mike Rowe basically just wrote an episode right out of Season 3. Many episodes this season have been subpar due to being cartoon stock plots ("Genestalk") or poor remakes of older episodes ("Leadbelly"), but here we got an episode that was not only wholly original, but rewards long-time viewers with continuity treats and details about Fry's past that are done smartly instead of being dumb retcon.

"Cold Warriors" gave us insight on the relationship between Fry and his dad, but this was the stronger episode with the more touching ending, and Fry's mom has never gotten any more depth before this than being a negligent football nut. It wasn't quite perfect, but it was funny, touching, and though we've seen Fry's past a lot, it was still expanded in a clever way.

Only my second "5" of Season 7 besides "Near-Death Wish".

Now that Digby was confirmed to be there as well..
think about how many people are at the cryo lab on December 31st 1999?

And it made sense that we wouldn't see them in the dreamscape, as the original Fry didn't.

But we now know in "Bender's Big Score" we have multiple time warping versions of Fry and Bender going in and out of this place, Fry and Nibbler under the desk from "Why of Fry", obviously the original Fry in the chair, and now Digby.
Glad they added one more person to that insanity.

This was Futurama at it's prime.
It might be the best episode of the CC run, and it was written by Rowe!

Part "Star Trek IV," part "Close Encounters," and part "A.I," this is as good as a Fuurama episode as ANY since the show came on to Comedy Central. I can't believe it even belongs in the same multiverse as any episode from 2011, 2012 or 2013. For anyone who ever needed a reminder of why they became interested in this show - with its three episodes left - in the first place, "Game of Tones" is it.

The ending by itself is a ten, and is the only other time since Jurassic Bark I've ever cried properly in a Futurama episode.
Being objective though, this episode is filled with so many plotholes I can't be bothered to count. Some of the gags aren't perfect, and so it gets a 4 from me, DESPITE having the best ending I've seen from the past four Futurama seasons.

It was a great episode and one of the best of 7B for sure. Intriguing story, some great emotion, and a good 'companion' to "Luck Of The Fryrish", "Jurassic Bark", and "Cold Warriors" (the episodes that deal with fry's family members, and seymour).

I enjoyed the dreams, the mysterious intro to the episode, and the close encounters reference.

One thing really annoyed me though, and that was the explanation for the tone. I found it silly, although I have warmed to it a bit. What I found ABSOLUTELY STUPID though was the fact that the nibblonian spaceship was still there after 1000 years. Also, why did they even want it back? They have more ships...

4/5 overall.

Of the total 68 new episodes (the movies count) CC will have aired when the show is done on September 4th; this was (by far) in the top three.

Mike Rowe finally pulled a great episode together.
Sure it may have some inconsistencies if you pick it apart.
But the emotional weight, and all the key Futurama refrences/jokes are here in deep proper form.
Hell, this might be the best new episode made since 2007.
I'm just waiting to see the series finale to know for sure.

I was all set to call this episode overrated and another way to milk out the best bits of old Futurama...but good god this was superb. This was one of the funnier episodes this half season, with Fry concluding that dream sex with Michelle doeswn't count as cheating and Mt. Shushmore probably the hardest I've laughed during an episode since Zapp Dingbat. Seths cameo, thank god, was short and actually really funny. I didn't cry at the end, but I've never cried at a Futurama episode, and I did appreciate how touching it was. So now Fry's entire family is covered in terms of emotion.

My only gripe was it wasn't explained why Nibbler couldn't recall the sound either. I realise you could just say that it was a thousand years ago and he probably forgot, but all they needed to do was say that and I would've been satisfied.

Honestly, I was surprised this got as high a rating as it has. But still it is a great episode. Adding some more dimension to Fry's Mom was a good idea.

Yeah, this was all over the place in terms of continuity. But screw continuity; this is a cartoon about a robot with a seemingly bottomless compartment. It really doesn't have to make sense.

A really heartwarming episode! To the people criticizing the ending as "anticlimactic" do remember that while it may be more emotionally engaging than Family Guy or South Park Futurama is first and foremost a COMEDY, not a drama. I thought the ending was too damn funny (much preferred this ending to the ending of Jurassic Bark) and I also loved seeing the drunk Nibblonians and also SEYMORE! And Seymore sniffed Nibbler's butt haha.

Bit silly with the explanation of the sound. Why would a Nibblonean want to hear two beeps in return from the sound of his key fob, knowing that it's not his actual space ship that beeps?

What was kind of funny was that apparently, Jurassic Bark was originally supposed to be about Fry's mother, not Seymour.

This is officially my favorite episode of this entire season! Hell, this may even be one of my favorite epsidoes of all time! It had great Sci-Fi, a couple of great jokes ('Booby Tuesdays', anyone?), and a really heartfelt ending.
The entire storyline was really cool, too. I liked how quick the got to the basic plot, but it wasn't rushed at all. The idea of going into Fry's dreams to try and help him remember the tones was very creative. I also thought the idea that Fry couldn't go to places he'd never been to in the past was really smart, and was executed well. I thought the scene where the entire crew came to Fry's dinner table in his dream was hilarious, and Nixon's really long Baaaaaaaaahhgggrooooh! was awesome. Also, am I the only one who thought Seymore was going to talk alot more? Whatever, the less Seth McFarlane the better. The explanation of what the tones were was really cool too. I love it when they explain more about the Nibblonians and Fry's freezing, as those stories are always great. Now I want to rewatch Space Pilot 3000 to see if those tones are really there, although I'm pretty sure they aren't.
Now, before i say anything about the very end, let me remind you all I'm a guy, so crying doesn't come easy to me. But the end of this episode actually made me almost tear up, and that's saying alot. I love how it showed that even though his mom was a sports fanatic, she still loved Fry a whole lot.

I always enjoy these kinds of episodes. Them being the ones where we dwell into Fry's past. Not only are they interesting, but they often find great ways to pull on our heart strings.
We had 'Luck of the Fryrish' which explored Fry's relationship with his brother. 'Jurassic Bark' which explored Fry longing to see his dog again (as we all know, the most famous ending in any Futurama episode), 'Cold Warriors' which explored some of Fry's relationship with his father. And now 'Game of Tones' which explores Fry's longing to tell his mother what became of him.
I can't bring myself to say that this was as emotional as 'Luck of the Fryrish' and 'Jurassic Bark', but dammit, it tried and did a fantastic job.

Plus, I laughed out loud when Fry contemplated sleeping with Michelle in his dream and Fry's dad's interaction with Nixon.

Probably the best of the season so far.

I loved the gag, and how it played out. There were lots of great jokes, and some fun stuff.

I expect everyone else gives highest marks because of the emotion, which is fine, but it wasn't the strongest part to me - bordering in sappy. I know Fry loved all his family members, but I guess we get an episode for everyone now. Dog, Yancy, Dad and now Mom. It seems a little forced. Like saying "I love you" every time before you hang up the phone. Got it, Fry loves everyone in his family.

Got it.

The jokes, however, were hilarious. I especially loved the strip club he just *had* to check out.

Anyway, great episode!

The "heart felt" ending come off as contrived and the revelation behind the mysterious tones was horribly disappointing. Lots of the gags fell flat as well. Not the most horrible episode of the new run but not nearly good enough either. They should try to cram more "revelations" into the Pilot anymore. It's getting ridiculous.

I don't get why people seem to be loving this episode so much - it's lazy, cheap, and packs no emotional punch relative to episodes like TKOS or TLOTF. Whilst it's enjoyable, it's certainly not the show's best moment, and even feels a little off-base. There are a few flat gags, the relationship between Fry and his mother is somewhat contradictory of what we've already seen, and now Nibbler is apparantly magic. This wasn't so much a great episode as an episode that had the potential to be great, but squandered this with a mediocre, standard-television sentimental message. Futurama's become such a watered-down brew that I'm wondering exactly what's wrong with people that they're not up in arms about the increasingly shallow nature of what used to be a deep and thoughtful show.

This was a decidedly average episode, and the fact that it's rated so highly here only proves that some people are incredibly easily pleased.

This episode was awesome and moving and funny! It's amazing that even with an episode that's undeniably great - it still gets those one or two random haters. Ha.

Please make more Futurams - the show is finding another stride!

Searching for a broken down spaceship 1013 years after it got lost, with no tracking device? Huh? Thankfully the Fry/Family thing was quite good.

ppl givin it 5 points cuz it made them wine makes the overall rating surreal... and i think this episode got overrated cuz of the crappy season and gets compared to these episodes. but comparing to the all time classic episodes no way in hell should this make #1. kinda decent episode though..

I'll be honest, I just watched it, and only thought it was ok... Until the end. Good jokes, but strange development throughout the episode. Then, at the end... Lets just say, if I ever need to cry on cue, this will probably pop in my head. How does futurama do it!?

It had its problems sure, but I still thought it was really great. The story was epic, we got to see Fry's past again, and we got an emotional ending that was really sad to watch. Despite some continuity stuff, it's easily one of the best episodes of the new run.

Fantastic ep. I was only let down by the revelation at the end, but it's a minor quibble to an otherwise classic episode.

I haven't ever seen so many fucking trollers on this site to criticize such a episode.

I mean it wasn't perfect, but just because it's one of the Season's greatest doesn't mean you gotta act like a baby with ADHD and hate on it.

I hope somebody deletes all of these Troll reviews. Like go hate on another show, preferably a Family Guy fansite. You're messing with the wrong fans.

That was, without a doubt in my mind, the best written episode of a cartoon of all time. "Hey Mom...I'mma spend this dream trying to get 3 more seconds to tell you I love you....and when I do...I just can't". Yeah. Amazing.

A good episode. It is funny and very touching ending. It is great to see Fry relation with his mom after that we saw his relation with his dad in ''Cold Warriors''.

However, Digby plot makes no senses and the origin of the noise is a very big disapointment. That is why I'm giving this episode a 4.

Brilliant episode, easily the most emotional I have seen in the series, cried like a banshee at the end, but the person I was watching it with liked but didn't love it. But I lost a parent unexpectedly so this really touch me and until it happens to you, you may not get the feeling I got from it.

Brilliant

I was really pleased with this episode. Sappy endings are a regular occurrence on Futurama, and some of them miss the mark, but I felt like this one got it right.

In the past, Fry's mother was portrayed as a bit neglectful, caring more about sports than her own children, but in this episode she was given a lot more humanity than we've seen before. We got to see an emotional connection between Fry and his father in "Cold Warriors", as well as Fry and his brother in "Luck of the Fryrish" and in this episode, Fry and his mother get a similar treatment. Seeing how much Fry and his mother cared for each other was something that felt new and it was refreshing to see. It felt genuinely poignant.

Great episode, and quite funny too. I was glad we got something like this before the recancelling, because an episode exploring Fry and his mother's relationship completes the "set" of episodes exploring the relationship between Fry and his entire family.

Good take on the Inception movie. I have normally not liked the mushy episodes from Fry's past but this was a solid episode and probably my favorite of the season thus far. The Niblonian and the key fob noise is a ridiculous premise though and the reason why it doesn't deserve a 5.
