Can't get enough Futurama

Futurama Article in Variety

A new article in the magazine "Variety" called "Inside Move: 'Futurama' may get new lease on life" echoed basically what we've been saying in May last year.
Talks have begun at 20th Century Fox TV to revive the animated skeinskein, which takes place in the next millennium, much in the same way "Family Guy""Family Guy" found new life after cancellation.

The studio is in early discussions to put "Futurama" back in production and create a limited number of episodes of the Emmy Award-winning skein -- although it's too soon to tell where those segs might end up. A reprep for 20th Century Fox TV declined comment.
The story got mirrored in a number of general news sites. Of course, Variety is usually very close to the sources, so there was a chance that a change to the status of Futurama had happened. However, this is only the case in a very limited way. The talk is still about the DVDs (not TV, for all we know) and it is still ongoing. The slight difference is that our sources at the top of the show's team tell us that they think there will be some sort of result soon. They seem to be carefully optimistic, but nothing is set in stone yet.

I hope it comes back, I only just discovered the show in reruns :(
davidJan 5th 2006, 08:31
not that IMDB.com is the final word or anything. but it says all the voices are signed on and that it will be rereleased in 2007
KimberlyJan 5th 2006, 08:35
Good news, everybody!
LukeJan 5th 2006, 09:29
I so hope it does. Futurama is one killer show! Fan since the beginning!
CalculonJan 5th 2006, 10:51
GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!
I've been a fan since the first episode... my second favorite show of all time (next to 'Arrested D').
ZeverkenJan 5th 2006, 11:01
Oh man, this was a nice wake-up news story. I saw the news on another site, and came here to check out any details. Fan ever since '99. Let's hope some new episodes, i wanna see some more of the Fry/Leela thing.
BrainSluggoJan 5th 2006, 12:34
Wow. "Kim Possible" gets a repreive from Disney's 65-episode kill-rule, and now the Planet Express Ship may be launching into the hilarious and unknown once again. If this pans out, I'll have gotten what I really wanted for Christmas.
KazzahdraneJan 5th 2006, 13:21
Billy West has also posted on his personal forum to say he's had an e-mail from David X Cohen saying they hope to start on the DVDs soon.

Yay! :)
blahJan 5th 2006, 13:29
i dont know how other fans feel, but i would probably prefer it if they released a whole new series on DVD straight away instead of TV. Sure it may not increase the shows popularity, but i will buy them anyway so it means i get them a year or two earlier...
bigfanJan 5th 2006, 13:51
I beg the Space Pope to pray for new episodes.
moronJan 5th 2006, 14:57
whats a skeinskein?
DaveBJan 5th 2006, 17:23
Wo Thats brilliant news

I really hope they do make more episodes I would absoloutly love it if they did I mean i is my favouraote show on Tv. Come on 20th Century Fox..............................!!!
ShakeyJan 5th 2006, 18:01
Apparently a skein is slang for a TV show, but it sounds kinda made up.
From what I'd heard the plan was to make the movie first and then judge Futurama's popularity on that; if there were enough sales they would restart the 20 minute episodes, but perhaps this isn't the case anymore. Whatever happens, it does seem that Fox are starting to realise the error of their ways!
TinFoilJan 5th 2006, 19:55
USA! USA! USA! This is the best news I've heard since Firefly got a movie. Please, oh please let the Planet Express crew fly again. Let's also hope we don't run into our wonderful voice talent holding out.
RandyJan 5th 2006, 21:04
I love Futurama. nuff said.

DamitolJan 5th 2006, 22:32
My little Rocket USA die-cast Planet Express crew that has sat on me desk for the last few years seem to be smiling a little bigger since I read the news yesterday. The reality of the situation is that we will have to wait a year after the contracts are all signed to see finished product, but it will be so amazing to see what Matt, David and crew come up with. Get ready to start posting those scoops -mArc-, and thanks for keeping the site alive during the dark years.

KimberlyJan 6th 2006, 00:14
What is Firefly?

Isn't that the sci-fi show that FOX didn't promote, shifted timeslots on, aired opposite two competing sci-fi shows, and then blamed lack of interest when they cancel^H^H^H^H^H^Her, cut production orders short on?

Oh yeah, I think I heard of it.
turkinaaJan 6th 2006, 00:15
i can't wait.
RIchardJan 6th 2006, 00:59
....skeinskein..?..?

Anyway, can't wait for the DVD's but bringing the show back entirely would be a nerd's dream come true.

Sweet Zombie Jesus! (sorry, couldn't resist! :-)

I truly, dearly hope to God that this pans out! It would AWESOME TO THE MAX!!! if Futurama did the whole phoenix rising from the ashes thing! Family Guy set a precedent - let's keep a good idea going with the network execs! Most definitely keeping my fingers crossed...

Here in Aus, Futurama has just gotten it's fame back after being given new life on one of our tvs channels. Now everyones saying *I loved it from the start* but the proof is in my collection of all four seasons of futurama that have been wtahced over and over!!! If the show can make a come back here then anything is possible. We love it down under NOW ZOIDBERGS THE POPULAR ONE WOOPWOOPWOOPWOOP
biggiJan 6th 2006, 13:17
wuaaaaaaa.. :O i "discovered" the show in 2004 and i've been watching it ever since. took me 4-5 days to watch all the episodes and afterwards i was ";(" in 2 days :p.. yeah i'm a weirdo :D.. FUTURAMA I LUBB J00 :p
Family Guy owns too! :> (just so you know :d)

Do not toy with my emotions. I just might go on a brutal rampage if this rumor is false.
Officer1BDIJan 6th 2006, 17:19
I promised myself that I wouldn't freak out until we heard from the showrunners themselves that the project (movie, DVD, whatever they're plotting) had been greenlit by F*X.

So close; so very, very close....
wantFrywiththatJan 6th 2006, 17:58
I feel cautiously optimistic!
KurtPikachu2001Jan 6th 2006, 18:22
It's going to come back, people. Just wait and see.
SomeguyJan 6th 2006, 20:36
We can only hope it comes back. Even if it dose,I think they have to make Leela hate Fry by doing something funney. If it dose comes back, FOX should cancel Americian Dad(it's horrable)and have Futurama to replace it.Or it can come out on DVD.I don't care,I just want Futurama bran new episodes!
KissMyShinyJan 6th 2006, 23:00
Wow, that's the best news of '06, my kid's will be thrilled too, (since they like the show as well). Can't wait to be able to see a new run here in the UK, (cable tv or straight-to-DVD, I don't care which!)

I just hope this isn't a cynical attempt by Fox to get the sales of the DVD box sets up. >-(

TobeonJan 6th 2006, 23:49
This is horrible news!
I love futurama, but it ended on such a great note! there was not a single bad futurama episode it rocked! unlike the downhill ride of the never ending simpsons!

Futurama ended perfectly, if they continue it they run the risk of turning into the tripe of the simpsons!
benderJan 7th 2006, 00:00
OMFFFFFFFFG FUTURAMA IZ TEH BAK!!!!!!!
AlexJan 7th 2006, 00:47
What they should do (fox)is run a big commercial campaign for futurama, all commercials and posters should be marked: made by the creators og the simpsons and a week later they should cancel american dad and replace them with Futurama starting from S1E1 and u know the rest.
AmuroRayJan 7th 2006, 02:07
Although I'm a true fan of Futurama, and I do hope that this "good news" is true, I would advise y'all "not to put your hopes TOO high" for the rebirth of Futurama (on TV). Somehow, Fox's a really ODD TV station; they always pick up the good shows (e.g. Simpsons, Married With Children, Arrested Development, Firefly, Stargate SG-1, etc. in addition to Futurama), but most of these shows got cancelled by Fox despite good reviews (other than Simpsons & MWC) and Fox really didn't care 'bou them.

OTOH, I would LOVE to see if the comeback is on another channel such as Comedy Central or Cartoon Networks...at least they know what's good for their networks...
SpinnerJan 7th 2006, 03:18
This is the best news since the DVD releases! I agree with Tobeon that Futurama ended on a good note and it would be a shame to see the series go down hill, but I believe there is still plenty of life in the concept. There are hooks in old episodes left open (like in The Why of Fry where Nibbler refers to Leela as 'the other').

If we look back at each season of Futurama I think it is pretty clear that it got better as it went along. It seems to me we only got to explore part of the Futurama universe. Here's to exploring more...
DonaldJan 7th 2006, 03:27

I cant wait for futurama to come back.!!!!!!!!!

cactusturtleJan 7th 2006, 04:27
I only saw 4 eps of Futurama before it was cancelled and it would be so, so, so awsome if it could come back.Oh and in case me saying I only saw 4 eps sounds strange I do have all the seasons on DVD (which took a bit of effort since they're hard to find in Australia).
MishkafromRussiaJan 7th 2006, 05:52
Pleaseplea ... !!!!!!!!!!
This is the show of the 21st century (though not "21st century FOX")! PLEASE bring it back!!!!!
CopperheadJan 7th 2006, 07:57
I don't care if it comes back on tv or dvd, I just want it back. To say that it ended perfectly and not want any new ones is just idiotic. The Simpsons is still great, Family Guy sucks, American Dad sucks even worse, and Fox sucks hardest of all.
MitchCJan 7th 2006, 08:46
I wish I kept the article, but this past week in the TV section of the New York Post there was an article talking about the Futurama direct to DVD. It quoted David X. Cohen as saying that in his opinion production would begin tomorrow, but he also said that has been his opinion for the past 6 months. It also said the movie would be ready some time in 2007. All things I read here but the Post is owned by the parent company of Fox, if I'm not mistaken, so I found it interesting they would run the article.
Janey27Jan 7th 2006, 17:22
David X Cohen and Billy West have been confident of a return for over a year, so I really hope this is actually proof of a new developement! I love Futurama. I have 4 episodes I haven't watched yet, 'cos I'm rationing the spacey goodness to make it last longer. If it gets brought back, I'm gonna binge til I reboot!

Long live Futurama!! FOX -see the light!!
SpotterJan 7th 2006, 17:44
So tired of stupid chewing-gum products of western tv...Futurama's the only thing that brings positivity.Fox is a bunch of bloody idiots imo.so

I hope that they will realese the DVD on German too, though the "Season 5" isn't released in Germany on DVD yet.
LangwurstJan 8th 2006, 20:18
Would be cool but in the last series there was a slight hint of resting upon laurels. I'm not saying it should not be bought back in any format just that they should go careful and not run it into the ground.
seamonstermanJan 8th 2006, 21:12

RJJan 10th 2006, 00:02
Come on, everyone here has been saying its going to come back, but as soon as some tiny news comes out, this entire place explodes with talk of it coming back. GET REAL. they are "cautiously optimistic"- and who wouldnt be? i mean, they are the ones who will be payed millions if the deal goes through, of coarse they are gonna be optimistic. Don't get me wrong, i love the show, but until real news comes out, just cross your fingers, and quit pissing your pants with excitement.
JaneyJan 10th 2006, 00:36
Billy West's new project - if you want the trailer, go to not volcanobrain, 'cos the bandwidth is crashing.

Nice going Biggi, you really showed your maturity with that response.

Anyway, let's hope we'll see some more high-quality Futurama.
TheLight6Jan 11th 2006, 16:45
Sweet news of revival at last!!!!!! It has been revival down here in Australia on Channel 10 (I know this has been metioned already) but i've been a fan of the show after it ended but repeats were of our Channel 7 which I have to say treated it badly. Also if it seems we put our hopes up of nothing think of Doctor Who it was cancelled from 1989 to 2005 (with a movie in 1996)!

Okay... maybe I'm just out of the loop, but there is some reference to 5 seasons of Futurama when I've only ever seen or heard of 4. Was that an error in the article, or am I missing an entire season?
MorboJan 12th 2006, 03:10
MORBO DEMANDS MORE EPIDOSDES!!!
JohnLeeJan 12th 2006, 05:50
there were 4 production seasons, however Fox split it into 5 when the series first screened. The DVDs are organised by the original four seasons.

Bringing it back would be great. It is a well written, well animated show. Fox deserves a little slack though. At least they are willing to give these shows a shot and they usually hold off on cancelling shows until they can no longer afford to run them anymore. You can advertise a show and it can get great buzz, but if no one is watching it you cannot keep it around. Futurama was before its time, but now is the perfect time to bring it back.
RJJan 13th 2006, 07:05
you people are brimming with intelligence! this is NOT IM, please do not stoop down to that level. Please is "Please", not "Plz". Come on people, its not that hard. I mean, konqueror (my browser) even has spellcheck. You make this place look stupid, and I am sure most of you are very smart, regardless of age, because you like futurama.

Oh, and also, while this is good news, don't piss your pants just yet. Even the "reliable source" says that a deal is in the works, not that its sealed. Knowing how the world works now, a deal in the works does not mean much, so for now, just cross your fingers and be sure to not act like an idiot here.

sorry to be so pessamistic, but someone here has to be
KazJan 13th 2006, 11:36
Please let it happen - Futurama is a superior show, and better by far than its stable-mate, The Simpsons. If Futurama had come first you know that it wouldn't have been cancelled in the first place.
benderJan 13th 2006, 13:44

DaveJJan 14th 2006, 01:00
What made futurama so superior to the simpsons was the fact that it had proper dialogue and some hint of an actual linear storyline. Unlike the simpsons which was just too episodic in the end. IF they bring it back, **PLEASE**, they need to stick with the plot and not take any lessons from the more recent simpsons. Homer the Pie man? rack off.

WHEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

I just hope new episodes will be as good as all previous. Also, it'll be bad if Futurama will become something like Simpsons with 15 seasons... I mean, Futurama ends very good, the ending is totally great and if they'll make some crap plot... I WILL DESTROY THEM!!!

Although, maybe not.
justadudeJan 15th 2006, 03:23
Post #17 by seamonsterman is the most absurd and probably the most uneducated comment since the invention of the comment. I'm sorry that I have to attack you on this but let's be honest you are probably some highschool kid that has no idea about political humor because you don't understand it. Am I right? American Dad is a funny show. It took some time to get off it's feet, I'll admit, but some of the stuff they are getting away with is just great (i.e in the episode called "Bullocks to Stan" Dick Cheney defibrillates himself, it was just hilarious). And to call Family Guy "gay" is just rediculous. That show is already more than Simpsons ever was and I say that as a longtime fan of the show from the very beginning and with appreciation of what it still tries to accomplish.

I am a HUGE fan of Futurama. So much so, that I had a crawfish in my fish tank in college, that I named Zoidberg (...R.I.P.). And yes canceling this show was a big mistake by FOX, but don't belittle other shows just because your little mind can't grasp the humor.

There is one show that has truly run it's course, however, and deserves to only be in syndication. And that is King of the Hill. It had it's moments, but its time to go Hank Hill.

You probably won't read this since your post was made almost a week ago.
HelloJan 18th 2006, 02:19
... imdb say in places that its a movie ... any 'news' bout that, true/false?

Would be mad if futurama was to come back because here in Australia network '10' has started showing 3 episodes a week ... it would be great if new episodes would run next year but maybe because it took like 5 years to get seasons 1-4 going
regaholicFeb 27th 2006, 16:36
with this much hype and popularity, and with the talent that brought everyone the simpsons, fox would be stupid not to put futurama back on air
RyanMar 24th 2006, 01:43
If Family Guy can do it why not Futurama? By the way Alex American Dad is cool and should stay on FOX. What they need to get rid of is war at home. That show if fucking gay! FUTURAMA please come back with out replaceing American Dad
NibblerMar 24th 2006, 22:36
Dear Seamonsterman
WTF?! How can u not like Family Guy, u Fucking rucksack. Are u gay, by ur sceen name I have a sneaking suspition u r. U can suck my bawls!!
RyanMar 24th 2006, 23:02
You Know what really Grinds My Gears? Seamongsterman Comment #17 Whats wrong with you? Family Guy is cool. I think it is amazeing that only in the first couple of seasons Family Guy became more popular than the Simpsons and all their great episodes Combined. Think about that Combined. Second of all the people who produce Family Guy worked hard to get it back on the air and further more it should stay on the air.Because I truely Beleve that it will be the new simpsons. Lets face it the new episodes of simpsons Sucks. If you ask me they should get rid of the new episoeds of simpsons and play the Mid-season re-runs on Fox get rid of war at home replace that with Futurama then LEAVE Family Guy and American Dad where they are. So the Sunday line up would be Simpsons Futurama Family Guy and American Dad. That Brings me to my next point. What the FUCK do you have against American Dad. That show is Freakin Funny. Espically that episode where Stan is trying to get a prmotion from his boss and the second part of the saudi arabia episode where Gerorge Bush come form a helicopter and gets weirder from there. My point is Seamongsterman cant recinize excellent stuff when he sees it ( Plus Family Guy has won tons of awards) Getting rid of those 2 shows would be the absolute most retarted thing Fox ever did. Next to getting rid of Futurama of course. Thinking like that is what makes most of Foxes shows suck. Long story short
You know what really grinds my Gears? Seamonsterman FUCK YOU !
