I believe that the first movie is to be released on DVD first before it airs on Comedy Central. Most sources do state that is what will be happening, but the only source that says that the new episodes will air in 2007 is Katey Sagal's official website. I'm just wondering when they will release more specifics on the movie- perferably the release date for both the DVD and air time, the plotline, and how much the characters changed within the two years that have passed in the universe of Futurama.

Futurama is the greatest show ever!!! I will buy any DVD that they come out with. I already watch all four "season" box sets over and over. Bring on some more!!!

If anything, this is bad news. It means the show was in fact not "picked up" for another season. I mean, we already new movies were coming, so unless the mention of the word "Futurama" makes this a wonderful occasion, it's nothing to celebrate. (Not that I'm not exstatic that Futurama will be back for atleast a little while)

So they're going to edit the movie into episodes with new material? Will the DVD set that will follow have both versions? I'd hate to think I couldn't own every single bit of Futurama written.

As popular as Futurama is on [Adult Swim] & the sales of the DVD, I don't see why Fox just doesn't bring it back completely like it did with Family Guy. It would be a win/win scenario for everybody.

See, this confuses me. The interview with David X. seemed to confirm that they were writing separate episodes, while these quotes from Groening say otherwise. I'm hoping that this new interview was taken out of context (from the original site, not CGEF) or is older and out of date, and that we'll be getting a DVD movie and 13 new episodes on Comedy Central.

That's kind of bitter sweet. Glad to see new Futurama is coming, but I'm greatly disapointed that it's not the 4 movies AND 13 new episodes. Either way, hopefully it's picked up for more seasons to come.

for a futurama fan like me, anything new gives me a boner. its my alltime favorite show by far and im sick and tired of wTCHING the same episodes over and over. im ALSO sick of waiting to read the comics every few months.
anyways, chances are its gonna get great ratings so im hoping with all my might that they will bring the show back on permanantly. i mean WTF, seth mcfarlane can get 3 shows from fox but the creator of the simpsons can't get a show that got huge ratings on adult swim back on.

Why wouldn't they? In both of Matt Groening's shows he has had a commentary for every single episode, so it's pretty much a definite that they will have commentaries for all four movie, and anything that they do beyond that.

I'm sure they will; the problem is that Fox understands sales, but they don't "get" Futurama (perhaps it's too clever for them, not low-brow enough, or is just too DIFFERENT from everything else for their taste). They do not know where to put it in their schedule, and although they understand it sells well, they do not understand _why_ because they themselves do not get it. I'm sure that once DVD sales of the direct-to-DVD movies takes off and the comedy central airings of the movie-derived episodes prove their worth in ratings, they'll figure out SOMETHING to do with it, but I'd be surprised if they put it right after the Simpsons (where it did the best prior to adult swim) because they don't "get" it. They know good strong sales, but they fear what they do not understand.

See, our dear friend hailey is a perfect example of Futurama programming directors: their intelligence is low enough to not understand the show so they try to kill it because they do not understand. See, the thought process is as follows:

"Me not understand. Me not like what not understand. Not understand Futurama make me mad. Me smash Futurama."

And thus, the result is comments such as that which you read in #41 by hailey. It appears to me that hailey should be watching Family Guy rather than posting here. Family Guy is much more his speed. hailey understands dick and fart jokes, but math and science jokes? Eh, not so much.

Overall the news isn't as good as if Fox were renewing the show, as they did with FG. But another summed it up nicely -- we'll take what we can get.

Fox is a very interesting network -- they consistently try some of the more risky and facinating offerings, while having almost zero confidence in their new shows (i.e. if they had given "Justice" even one season I'm sure it would have proven itself). They are as quick as ABC on the trigger to cancel and to schedule shows in dead zones (where they have almost zero chance to survive -- did Futurama *ever* have a single season in which all the episodes were shown, or weren't they at least preempted by football overruns in each and every season so it took forever for them all to see the light of day?)

And yet... Simpsons, FG and even (amazingly enough) KOTH continue to show they will sometimes support animation in ways no other network has ever done. (Pop quiz: Name the last animated primetime series that lasted more than one season on *another* major network. Can anyone do this without going back to the 60's?).

I'm thrilled we'll see more Futurama (a show that has grown on my wife and I far more since it was cancelled than when it was first on) but hope that Fox will reconsider and at least give it as much attention as they are FG (which, sadly, is no where near as funny as it was during its original run).

i strongly agree with what Kimberley says, people who dont like it simple chuck it to the side. I love futerama probally because i undersatnd it. Anyway hopefully if the films come out FOX will notice how popular ( as people are undastanding this sort of stuff more and more each day) it is and hopefully re-air the series. Read the interviews that Marc, Jon, etc. post here for us to read. The reasons Futurama takes so long to produce is covered in detail.

They take their time in fleshing out the stories, working with the voiceover actors, then actually recording the tracks almost concurrently to the animators' creating the visuals.

Besides, just LOOK at it. The quality of animation (aside from Groening's characteristically simple drawing of human forms), the seamless blending of 2D and 3D animation, the framerate it's animated it (it's not like Hanna-Barbera's pathetic 4 to 6 FPS that you see in "classic" 70s animations; the animation is generally quite smooth in Futurama), and so forth. Let's not forget the soundtracks (featuring a lot of original music and lyrics), oh good lord there is a ton of work involved.

Ever draw short stick-figure cartoons in paper notepads when you were a kid? Multiply that effort by about 18 billion.

So essentially the DVD movies are going to be like Lord of the Rings and the season set of the episodes is going to be like Lord of the Rings Extended Editions.

Somewhat upsetting just from a money standpoint, financially I want to hold out to get everything in one purchase. But I know I'll break down and by the movies.

They're starting with four DVDs, which will be expanded into 16 episodes. That's the first season to start with. Want more? Spread the word. Buy box sets of seasons 1-4 for friends and family. Donate boxed sets to local libaries. Ask for it at video rental shops. When the timeslot is announced, be sure everyone knows about it.

If you have more than one Tivo, set all of them to record Futurama. Do you have digital cable? Set all of your tuners to Futurama when it airs. Nielsen contacts you to become a Nielsen household? Agree to do so and be sure to watch Futurama religiously, and if you have to log it on paper, never forget to log it. If you're being tracked via a box, or watching via tivo, or digital cable, don't flip channels during commercials. Do you subscribe to your cable company's DVR service? Set it to record every single Futurama airing. DO everything you can to help boost ratings. The only thing you should NOT do is lie if you are a nielsen household, or ask people who are nielsen households (if you inadvertantly find out) to lie on your behalf. Merely encourage them to watch the show. Have a MythTV or Windows Media Center box for your PVR/DVR? Opt in to statistics gathering.

Buy the new boxed set when it comes out. Email Fox and Comedy Central asking them to produce more movies and episodes. Hand them out as early Christmas gifts, as birthday gifts, or whatever.

Put it this way: if it doesn't sell, and doesn't get good ratings, it will not get renewed. Do everything you can to get people hooked on Futurama NOW.

Scumbuddy, yes, I did see that article. Unfortunately, there was no information whatsoever about the upcoming movies. It's still a good read, though.

I'm probably going to get bashed by a lot of fans from this comment this, but I personally would rather have the movies sum up the series, with unveiling secrets that have been planned when the show was early in the works. A television program can only last for so long before it becomes stale and reptitive. I do not want Futurama to become what the Simpsons is now. I would like to see a grand ending that will be a treasure in the series.

I really hope that they start releasing new information about the movie sooner or later. I would be somewhat dissappointed if we don't even get a single framegrab by the time that Comic Con comes in late July.

I had a similar experience. I used to watch Futurama in the early days (2000) just before The Simpsons latest season on FOX LA channel. Then I've got really frustrated with those awful Simpsons episodes (quality-wise), and consequently imagined that Groening had lost his touch. I gave him no further chances.

Some months ago I found out that Groening was kind of obligated by FOX to quit contributing to the Simpsons. It is quite easy to make connections within the FOX network and the Republicans, more so now that I've got access to the Fox News channel (on DTV LA) and their biased and disturbing interpretation of the world... they even have an slogan that reads "The Cost of Freedon". Pretty disturbing, and possibly the reason for the Simpsons "cancellation".

I read Groening eventually went to work in Futurama (in a real way, not just sitting with awful writers with no permission to shut them up), so I gave it a tried. The shows really speaks for itself: well written and animated, with some exquisite episodes ala Simpsons (quality-wise again). I really hope this good fellow gets to understand that his works deserves to be well treated and eventually finalized in a good manner. This is modern pop art after all, and if he is not allowed to work with freedom at least respect the creature he created with such a good taste. I just hope history doesn't repeat itself with Futurama, that's all.

You're doing every fan that comes to this site for news on Futurama a disservice by selectively quoting Matt. If you read the entire article at craveonline you'll see that he's all but certain it'll lead to more Futurama.

This worries me a little. I hope this doesn't mean this is a limited run kinda thing.

Groening and Cohen have both stated that the Direct-to-DVD movies and the derived episodes are only the beginning.
