Bender's Game Review

As you probably know, November 4th 2008 is a big day for the US - the day that the third Futurama Movie "Bender's Game" is going to be released on DVD and BluRay. For me, November 4th was a few days ago. FOX send me a pre-release screener copy of the next Futurama incarnation so that I could tell you what you are waiting for.

Head over to our review of Bender's Game and if you did not pre-order it yet, get out your credit card.

Great review! Gives enough hints at things without spoiling, making me anticipate the movie even more! I think I'm more excited about this one than the others (though I love the others) because I love fantasy even more than sci-fi! :)

Wait how do you know all this if the movies not out?
JesusOct 6th 2008, 12:26
Jesus endorses Futurama, spread the word.

And he knows because god told him, and by god I mean he said he was sent a pre-release screener.

Great interview!!!

i love cgef!
JasonMPeaveyOct 12th 2008, 16:37
I am so jealous, marc. Can I work for CGEF again just so I can catch the pre-screeners? J/k, still very jealous :) Can't wait till Bender's Game comes out. I wasn't that impressed with Bender's Big Score, but The Beast with a Billion Backs was really good!

Cool. I just now got the chance to see the second one, which I rented. I only own the first one.

My DVD arrived nice and early from play. Although I thought it was ok, it wasnt a patch on the first 2 films.. Hopefully not a trend as I hope the final film is awesome and carries on from the end of the series instead of these side stories. Funny though they are, if Futurama is to die, I want to see how Fry and Leela's story ends

What is that Rocket Ship-song called?
VasiliiNov 3rd 2008, 03:04
Hi everyone,

I enjoyed #1, tolerated #2, but #3 is extremely disappointing!

I hope #4 won't be as crappy as #3.

I love the Futurama but if quality of the series will follow #3 I would probably stop watching it.

As much as i like the new movie (comes loose at the end though), does the Region 1 DVD suffer from horrendous ghosting and poor interlacing like the Region 2 DVD?
sherriNov 4th 2008, 13:47
Wow It seems like I waited forever for the third movie. That wait was worth it. I loved Benders Game. I agree with most of the comments posted. Benders Big Score was great. The Beast With A Billion Backs was ok. Benders Game I love. If you are a Beatles fan the beginning of Benders Game was amazing. Thanks for not letting me down.

I though it was the best Futurama movie yet.The "Eviscerator" scene was so funny I nearly peed my pants.

For those of you who don't have the Blu-Ray, the "video commentary" is just a recording of the people sitting in chairs doing the audio commentary. You're not missing anything.

Also, the numbers that go by in the opening are the digits in the number "e".

Bender's Big Score was an amazing analogy of perception underscored by irrationalism, which seems to be taking the nation by storm. Beast with a Billion Backs was a masterpiece of both the conscious waking world and the dream world, or hallucinogenic variety, and provided an amazing insight to a brilliant mind. THANK YOU gods FOR MATT GROENING! Remember all, once you lose your way, THY metal lord is THY metal shepherd. my security words were high idea. and this definitely was one!

We bought it as soon as we saw it at the store! I can't get enough of these movies!!!I love you guys!
HallgarthNov 8th 2008, 20:52
Come on Roberto alone makes this the best movie yet!!!!!!!!!!
#12 i'm region 2 and I didn't experience any ghosting.
fydiousNov 11th 2008, 00:35
all three of the movies have been amazingly good. the plot isn't as complex in this one as the first two but its funny enough constantly to make up for it.
PirateKingChrisNov 11th 2008, 08:18
Great stuff, I still think Bender's Big Score was the best but I still loved both Beast and Bender's Game!
PirateKingChrisNov 11th 2008, 21:48
By the way, "Rocket Ship" was written by Daniel Johnston, but I can't figure out who did the cover in Bender's Game...
bigmikeNov 12th 2008, 02:22
so far all 3 sucked...sorry but they should have just let it die when it got cancelled. and never took it off adult swim, comedy cent. has all but ruined its presentation, i wont even watch it there. anyway, i'll still buy #4, to complete the collection, and hope it gets better, but I have my doubts. put it back on fox, 22 min episodes..or let it have a respectable death.
PirateKingChrisNov 15th 2008, 00:44
I love how when most people hate something, they give no reason why. I'm wondering what about the movies is worse than the series, any examples?
PandaLycheeNov 16th 2008, 08:35
I didn't like it very much on the first viewing, but after a couple more times it's great.

This one felt more like a super long ep. and the first two had a very "movie" feel about them. That's prob most people's issue
NimNov 17th 2008, 23:21
I dunno, I would actually like to see a little plot development in these movies and Bender's game felt like a wasted opportunity. Big score was phenomenal, Billion backs was okish, but not this. It will be interesting to see the finale. Personally I'd like to see Fry and Leela become a pair before the end and these last two movies haven't provided much in that department.
PirateKingChrisNov 20th 2008, 22:09
Yeah I kinda assume that is going to happen in the last movie, Nim. I think because that was a big part of the plot in Bender's Big Score, they wanted to completely lay off of it for Benders's Game and Beast With A Billion Backs...
MInionNov 22nd 2008, 20:01
I love how the review says it does not descend into slapstick comedy even though there is a character designed only to slap the Stooges.

PirateKingChris...the movies drag..unnecessary things are put in seemingly to take up time to lengthen the movies, taking away from the storylines, and quite honestly boring. on the other hand, the t.v. series didn't have enough time for things that really weren't relevant...except occasionally small parts added for pops and laughs. like I said before, it is a lot easier to write 22 minutes than 90....is that enough reason for you? if not, how about this..except for the basic story of BBS, they all sucked completely, beginning to end...not enough visual gags...and extremely bad dialog.
dicemanNov 26th 2008, 07:37
why would you allow such a travisty to happen!! bender's game is terrible, it does'nt make sence! how and why did nibbler make it back? did everyone forget what happened to the universe in the beast?and why is this other world crossed d&d with lord of the rings??? i was very disappointed with this extremelly poor effert guy's... please don't let your fans down with #4.
RandyHumeDec 4th 2008, 00:30
Bender's Game was a mediocre outing I'm afraid. Only Bender's Big Score was true to the original series. This Bender's Game had every character just totally stupid, except the Professor. Story was interesting but not very. A few laughs I guess. Where did Nibbler pop in from ? He disappeared in the first movie. I kmow the last movie will be great. Then we will be doomed to a world of stupid Family Guy and stupid American Dad and whatever stupid spin-off. This guy gets three shows and Matt Groening can't have two ? What a world... what a world...

I agree with BigMike about the movies. I enjoy watching all the Futurama episodes over and over, and I know it's hard to produce something like this, but the movies haven't really captured my interest. It's as if they took some 22 minute story ideas and then stuffed them with 60 minutes of weakish filler material instead of cutting out the weak bits to make it fit.

I watched Bender's Game last night, and from the beginning Leela seemed very out of character. We've already seen Sal trying to insult her like that (in Parasites Lost) and she doesn't fall for it. Leela's done stupid things sometimes (like opening that box in the Farnsworth Parabox), but it's always taken a lot more to build her up to it. It just seems like the producers decided the story they wanted and they're forcing characters do stuff to move the story along.

Random characters appear everywhere as cameos in the movies, but often don't stick around. eg. In BG, Dwight and Cubert were there at the start, but vanished for most of the movie. Leelas's parents were given cameos, but it didn't follow them either. It feels weird (to me) after the episodes, where you could normally expect that if you saw a character at all, they'd be a significant part of the episode (except Scruffy but that was part of the joke with Scruffy). I guess with only 4 main stories, they've been trying to get in as many characters in as possible, but I think the continuity's suffering because of it and making the movies unnecessarily complicated.

Also, and I guess this is a preference thing, many of the jokes are just more lame than they used to be. Nudity in futurama used to be really funny and unexpected, but now it's like the writers are coming up with excuses to show characters naked for the hell of it instead to add to a joke. Some of the humour's been reduced to uttering words for cheap laughs... yeah, whatever, but it just used to be done more intelligently than that before the movies.

It's as if they're suddenly trying to attract audiences from shows like Family Guy, but at the expense of what used to make Futurama funny for its own reasons. Maybe it's Comedy Central's influence, or just that the writing staff have a different structure or procedures or people or a smaller budget, but the tone of the show's definitely changed with the movies. In the back of my mind, I'm hoping Futurama gets renewed for a set of more normal episodes just to see if it the stories get more similar to the format they were before. There will always be the episodes, anyway.

Personally, I enjoyed benders Game FAR more than the 2nd one and slightly more than the first.

The first one dragged on a little in the middle. So many "fashbacks" it wasn't funny to do that and the flashbacks themselves had very, very few jokes. It wasn't needed and could have been compressed and more humerous time based jokes such as Bender always trying to steal his own wallet or something.

The 2nd just was NOT funny... it had two humerous parts: Deathball and the wedding of Kiff (okay, three with Kiff attached to the missle and expoding only to be eaten by zapp <shudders>

This one, much better. Humour running all the way through, the subplots all tie nicely together and the way the universe alternate shifted was nicely "side-explained" <Dark matter in reality is odd enough, considering how little we know... futurama's "it can make alternate universes" was great.
The D&D and Lord of the Rings skit was wonderful, had me laughing in buckets.

Much better.

One thing, the futurama guys are supposed to be StarTrek fans? If so, then they made an error I caught cause I too am, sadly, a ST fan.
Namely, in the rocket demolition derby, George Taki was driving the NX class that Bakula was supposed to have, and Bakula was driving the Consititution class Taki's show had... whoops.

Still, very good.
EhiJan 6th 2009, 18:46
My only complaint is with the level of some of the humor, all these math majors delving into potty jokes is a waste of talent.

Loved the slaying of the morcs.
jessJan 10th 2009, 01:37
I completely agree with 'izogi'. I liked Benders Game but i was really disappointed with it. All the characters have lost all the qualities that made them great, especially Leela. Also it just isn't funny anymore, every movie that comes out seems to have less jokes than the one before it. The jokes they do have seem suspiciously alot like the material used in other shows like Family Guy, American Dad and so on. So therefore i think futurama is losing alot of the stuff that made the fans watch it in the first place.
All else i can say is i hope that they improve on movie 4 and hopefully after that just bring back the series instead of the movies.
StubarbJan 11th 2009, 16:37
The first one was fairly enjoyable, the second one was not great but watchable (if completely devoid of laughs). This one is just truly awful, I love Futurama and all of the characters but this latest disk is complete dross. Whilst the animation is very nice the humour is completely dumbed down and I totally agree with the comments about the toilet jokes. Maybe the original format worked best because the short run times meant they only got to retain the best stuff. Also what is with Professor Farnsworth over explaining everything? The bit where they crash the ship and then it pans across to show they weren
SteveJan 14th 2009, 19:25
Its a shame it had to go out this way. I was excited to hear that they were making new Futurama material, and after having seen these movies, I kind of wish they had never bothered.
