Can't get enough Futurama

Futurama That Could Have Been

As we all know, there was a worrying time in the summer where during negotiations with the talented voice cast of Futurama, FOX sent out a re-casting call for people to audition for all the roles on the show.
How far in that process they got before the negotiations were luckily resolved we don't know, but it does seem that audition tapes were sent in.
Now one has turned up on the interwebs via actor James Pomichter's YouTube channel. Here he auditions for the role of Kif(played by Maurice LaMarche) and Fry(Billy West).

For curiosity only, I've posted it below. What do you think? Any good? Discuss in the comments below...

my god, that sucked.
System1988Jan 30th 2010, 22:03
Well even though I am thrilled the old cast is all back the work on these voices sounds great! I honestly did not hear much of a difference. In fact i think that this fry voice is cooler in a way, it makes the character sound older and that would be a progress for fry age- wise. Very good impresion of KIff's voice by the way. Sounds awesome.

Still the original cast voices are miles away!
CheeseJan 30th 2010, 22:08
It made me wanna puke my pants.
GregJan 30th 2010, 22:13
Dear James,

the right thing to do now would be to disable comments on your youtube video, unless you want to fall into a long and harrowing depression. Also, I think you've been watching the wrong show.
BarryJan 30th 2010, 22:45
Shrug... His Kif is okay, but his Fry is off. It would be tough to find someone who could do Fry as well as Billy West, since he's said that Fry is essentially his own voice when he was 25. Also, even if the guy does a good Kif, Maurice LaMarche does so many other great voices that you'd need to hire ten voice actors just to replace him.

I don't think this is a really good test of the guy's abilities in general, though - he might have some good original voice characterizations that weren't on the audition tape.

JDTreehornJan 30th 2010, 23:36
I mean...if I heard this from some random guy just doing his impression of the characters I'd be like "Wow, man, that's pretty good!"

But in the context of an audition tape to actually replace the original voice actors...dear lord this just doesn't cut it at all.
waldoJan 31st 2010, 00:39
wow, that was awful.
TK421Jan 31st 2010, 01:06
It isn't bad, definitely a slight difference in the voices which is to be expected, but what I think it points out most is: is how well the current voice actors know there characters, how much them become part of them which shows in the pauses, speed, tempo and choice oral mannerisms of the original cast. The show wouldn't be the same with out them and that is just the way it is. It'd be like replacing the core writing staff or Matt Groening or David X. Cohen.
elnombreJan 31st 2010, 02:16
Well, I could do Kif way better than that. Fry I couldn't do quite so well. But then, I didn't claim I could.

Overall? Pretty bad. If this had ever made it on to the show, that would have been the killing blow.
ithappensJan 31st 2010, 03:08
If this guy was the voice of Fry, I would stop watching the show. His Kiff was bad as well.
JennyJan 31st 2010, 05:07
The Kif wasn't bad, imo. I don't think I would've noticed too much of a difference in Kif.

The Fry I agree was off. It was a decent try, but I think Fry would be really hard to pin by anyone else.
LukeJan 31st 2010, 05:49
His Kif was good. Better as an impression than a replacement. Fry was not so great. It sounded too much like someone doing a voice, whereas Billy West sounds completely natural.

Obviously, it's nearly impossible to match voices exactly, so anything other than LaMarche and West will sound off and won't be (considered) as good.
TommyGrimmwayJan 31st 2010, 08:31
Yuck! Both just awful... I do a mean zoidburg!
JanaJan 31st 2010, 11:23
Well I entirely agree with JDTreehorn: this guy was pretty good and I actually recognized Kiff and Fry, but the whole idea of replacing original staff is just sad
Rainf0r3stJan 31st 2010, 16:08
Kif was ok since he doesnt play major roles and i'm not a kif fan anyways but Billy West is much better for Fry.
BobJan 31st 2010, 17:04
Not so good... I wouldn't have guessed it was Fry if I heard it out of context, it doesn't even have the timing or pronunciation of words right which isn't great and it just sounds so weird, couldn't imagine it coming out of anyone, it sounds too much like a put on voice or at the very least something stuck in his throat, not at all natural... and yeah just doesn't remotely sound like Fry... it's just really really off. His Kiff was also off, it lacked that great whiny sound that goes so well with the character... sounded more like a jolly old man from the somewhere in Europe... maybe a weak UK one... Overall... horrible. That would have resulted in a major disaster
kariJan 31st 2010, 17:22
personaly i think kif is good but fry needs work
JohnJan 31st 2010, 20:08
That made me sick to my ass... Thank god we got the originals back.
JeremyJan 31st 2010, 23:53
You took the words right out of my ass, John.

I suppose if the original cast had never been, like if you had never ever heard them before, then that guy might not have been too bad. But next to the awesomeness of the real Futurama team, that just made me wince.
CaPPsiEFeb 1st 2010, 00:43
Ok so I've loved Billy West for a long time. I like that this guy has put in the "wrench time", however, he is imitating someone else. Billy West is the original voice, no one imitates him to score a roll and let's face it, he has pretty big shoes to fill.

In short, it was a good effort but he's no Billy West and never will be with the fans that are so die hard.

I'm always impressed when there is a recast, however, when people try to re-create originals, often it's a fail.

How many people would be a good Dan Castellaneta?

So, let's just enjoy the fact that the originals have been re-signed to continue to give us what we all want. A bloody good show!

All the best from the UK,

Adam

Kif sounded too barney-y. I do a better Kif, seriously.

His Fry isn't good enough either ><
MikeFeb 1st 2010, 06:43
Oh god, that was terrible. If he had been hired as Kif, I would have been okay with it. Like somebody else said, Kif doesn't play that big of a role anyways.

But the Fry was just terrible. It didn't sound believable as a human being, to me. Let us all bow our heads in thankfulness for the wonder that is Billy West
kschenkeFeb 1st 2010, 08:48
It's probably as close as they would have gotten to the original voices, but those voices are so very distinct that any fan could tell and be disappointed. I've gotten to the point where I can tell any Tress MacNeille voice, hands down.

It's a good thing they didn't bring new actors, because even if those newbies were talented, I don't think any of us could accept them.
hyperscopeFeb 1st 2010, 10:28
Keep in mind all of us are accustomed to the characters original voices.

Putting that aside, Kif did not resonate with me but the Fry was not all that bad.
BigunclejesusFeb 1st 2010, 12:14
It's kind of like whenever Jim Henson died, and there was a new voice for Ernie and Kermit. Except Ernie and Kermit didn't sound completely different. Had this guy actually taken over, I would probably have to not watch the show, and that would make me sad.
KyleVeganFeb 1st 2010, 12:45
That was awful.

I don't know who you are James, but please, do us fans a favour and stay the hell away from voice acting and especially our beloved Futurama.

It's bad enough that we have been toyed with in the past with Fox's gratuitous air dates, the last thing we need is some cheeseball like yourself making our ears bleed with atrocious dribble that falls from your mouth.
hyperslugFeb 1st 2010, 18:50
The voices are bad and he should feel bad
RoobsFeb 1st 2010, 20:00
The Kif voice actually wasn't that bad. At the beginning. Fry's voice reminds me of this horror:
LaceeFeb 2nd 2010, 00:41
That was terrible.
LeeFeb 2nd 2010, 04:41
MY lord. that was nothing close to a real fry... fake
MattFeb 2nd 2010, 08:15
Kiff sounds like Mr. Burns. haha neither of them sounded remotely like the characters and I am VERY excited about the return of all the same voices and my favorite show ever coming back on the air!!! :)
izogiFeb 2nd 2010, 08:58
Just because he submitted an audition doesn't mean he'd have gotten any of the parts, though he might have and his imitations could have improved with more practice. Good voice actors can often imitate each other quite closely, and there's a great example of this on one of the Futurama commentaries where three of them all imitate Zoidberg almost indistinguishably.

It'd be a shame to replace the voice actors, but if the negotiations break down I'd rather lose voice actors than lose the script writers who make such intelligent jokes. Personally the major change in writing of The Simpsons as the original writers were replaced (often moving to Futurama) is what killed my interest in that show a long time ago, and I'd hate to see the same thing happen to Futurama because networks see great writers as more easily replaceable but will do anything to keep the actors.

that was the worst voice acting i've ever heard i think i'm a little dumber having heard it.
TillFeb 2nd 2010, 18:30
Completely decent, if you forget about the originals.

You guys have to listen to some of the German dubs of The Simpsons or Futurama, for example. Except for Lisa, all the voice work is terribly bland and not at all funny.
JonCGEFFeb 2nd 2010, 23:01
I am happy the original cast is back in action, however I think his audition was pretty tight. Good work.
RobbFeb 3rd 2010, 00:58
I mean the kif wasn't bad, but you sound like an NPR host mostly

if you're going to audition for something you need to work with material like that on the show, but not material from the show

meaning, writes some lines you think fry would say... then try and do them

otherwise you're just imitating something that was already done..

the kif was pretty good, the fry was like i said very NPR

good try, i couldn't say i could do so well... and I'd never try
ilovefuturamaFeb 3rd 2010, 01:41
Man I feel sorry for that voice actor. There's a lot of hate here for that guy. And all of it hilarious! If these comments are representative of the way all fans feel, then if they failed to get the original voice actors back they'd be better off just canning the show.
YouvehearditFeb 3rd 2010, 04:31
you can't unhear it!

Interestingly, James Pomichter's IMDB credits don't seem to list any voice-over work. This audition highlights that little chestnut.

In addition to the writers and animators (and Christopher Tyng!), this cast of accomplished voice-actors is an integral part of the soul of Futurama. Replace one actor and the show suffers.
MQDuckFeb 3rd 2010, 12:12
I'm sure James probably doesn't deserve it, but I'll hold a grudge against him for the rest of my life.
PurpleLohkeeFeb 3rd 2010, 21:51
" Man I feel sorry for that voice actor. There's a lot of hate here for that guy. And all of it hilarious! If these comments are representative of the way all fans feel, then if they failed to get the original voice actors back they'd be better off just canning the show. "

So true.
It's just natural that once you associated a voice to a face, it can't be easily undone, same for a name. James definitely can't be a fry but he's got potential, and nobody could do better then billy because billy's voice is Fry, and it can't change. But I bet that if all those angry comment writers would have a friend that does impressions of futurama like that guy, they'd be thrilled or even jealous.
RogerFeb 4th 2010, 02:06
That was so bad I think it gave me cancer...

Seriously though, trying to replace a known character voice is a tall order. I still have a tough time listening to Kermit the Frog and I believe Jim Henson hand picked the guy that does the voice now. No matter how good the replacement is it will always sound like someone doing an impression of the original.
EvilLincolnFeb 4th 2010, 03:29
I appreciate this, I really do, but I'm glad the original cast is on board. You can tell the original actors quickly became their characters, making them irreplacable.
SmooooooothFeb 4th 2010, 05:58
Wow.... im happy they got back the originals. Seen every episode a gazillion times, so it wouldn't be the same without the original cast. Thank god we got em back!!!
JriceFeb 4th 2010, 07:33
ridiculous. Kif is off and Fry is horrid . I don't want him playing either.

That made me lol
BagpussFeb 4th 2010, 13:56
It's not just the actual voice though. Billy W, Katy and all the other voice actors bring a certain "x-factor" to the show that could not be replaced.
hraoseFeb 4th 2010, 16:07
That was so terrible I think it gave me cancer.

Honestly, as 'fan' imitations they would be acceptable but I can honestly not understand that some people are unable to hear the difference. Couldn't be more obvious. Good try but I'm glad this didn't pan out.

MBS4EVERFeb 6th 2010, 14:19
The original is sooo much better! Especially Billy West as Fry!
tr0llFeb 8th 2010, 13:36
It's not bad acting and I'm sure he'd make great characters on the show but I don't think you can readily replace voices like that no matter how hard you try. Billy West is Fry and Maurice LaMarche is Kif and that's the end of it. If you can't get the original cast, don't revive the show.
JohnLansFeb 10th 2010, 01:48
Kiff wasn't too bad, Fry was just awful. Even though Futurama was/is my favourite TV series if they had that terrible Fry voice I'd never watch it again.
HHAHAHAFeb 12th 2010, 03:25
He would be better suited for a kids show. His attempt at those voices were not even close.

On another note I wouldn't even watch the show with out the original cast it wouldn't be the same show.

How has nobody said the obvious?!

"That was so terrible, I think you gave me cancer!"

Perfect setup for a Calculon Quote!
flesheatingbullFeb 16th 2010, 06:42
If Futurama was a newly syndicated show, this guy still wouldn't have gotten hired.

I won't put this audition down to the degree that id like to, just because the guy could have some good original voices(doubtful).

Thank god the original voice actors are back. Billy West, DiMaggio, Lamarche, as well as the rest of the cast are just plain irreplaceable.
calculonFeb 18th 2010, 22:56
that was so terrible i think it gave me CANCER!!!
JordanFeb 21st 2010, 07:42
Wow...that was terrible. No offense to the voice actor, replacing a characters voice is impossible...I mean if he was listening to another voice actor try and do Homer Simpson he would probably feel the same way we do. Only the idiots at fox would consider re-casting an entire show...I could see them now

"Wow looks like our first decision was right, this show should stay cancelled! It definitely wasn't our fault either times...changing time slots constantly and then replacing the proper voices when we brought it back didn't lose viewers...it must be the writers fault!"

You'd think they'd treat a show created by the same guy as their biggest show (talking about the simpsons of course) with a little more respect, but I'm sure the word respect is basically chinese to them.
JordanFeb 21st 2010, 07:58
Hahahah...just read the post with the Calculon quote and had to comment, my hat's off to you sir. If their was ever a perfect set up to that quote this was it.
CyberMonkeyMar 9th 2010, 07:52
The guy lisps way too sharply. His Kiff wasn't terrible, but his Fry sounded empty and hollow, besides coming off like a cut-rate impression. It wasn't helped by his lisp either. Basically, it sounded like something you might hear a fan-boy recite to Billy at a convention or something. Meh.
