Brilliant. I'm glad that the show's back, even more glad that there's been very little decay in the quality of writing. Not many background jokes though, that's really my only major complaint.
NutmegJun 25th 2010, 05:44
What tnuk said. Missing the background jokes and hoping that they're going to come back once the writers get back into it. Looking forward to some Keeler episodes as well!

I thought that they were awsome! The old cast sounds the same and writing is still funny. I love how they right off the bat make fun of Fox/
b00m3rangJun 25th 2010, 08:13
I'm happy with them. I expected the first episode to have some recap, some material getting new viewers up to speed, and less depth than a normal episode... and that's what I saw.

The second one seemed to be getting back into the groove of the series. Felt more like a regular episode. I expect this trend to continue with upcoming episodes.

With the quality of the previous series', it's easy to set yourself up to expect the new series to be as good as all your favorite episodes combined plus 10 years worth of compound interest... which isn't really attainable. While I highly anticipated the new release, I tried not to have too specific expectations, and I wasn't disappointed.
AndyJun 25th 2010, 08:27
Not bad at all. As a die-hard fan, I will like anythingthey do. I thought "Rebirth" was finnier, but the writing was kind of odd. The 2nd episode was more or less a normal episode, but not as funny. Hopefully they can jump into the story more. Although it seemed a tad off, I think the episodes to come will be better...

The new episode were AWESOME! Yeah, the comeback was great. Both were just awesome. The "eyephone" episode looks great aswell.

THEY'RE BACK BABY!
tyberiusJun 25th 2010, 13:14
I enjoyed the new episodes but.....
Did they explain why Leela Amy and Hermes' Wife are no longer wanted felons for killing Agnew in ITWGY?
Nixon even enlisted their help in IAGDL without mention of his most trusted Agnew.
WhyYesJun 25th 2010, 13:50
Watchable--interesting and funny. A bit awkward, but maybe that'll go away after a few episodes.
One major point of complaint: It took 10 years to build up Fry & Leela's relationship, and one episode (the second one, "leeladogadobado" or whatever it's called) to belittle everything that was Leela and Fry <3
:-/
I'm hoping that episode was someone's dream.
FuturamasJun 25th 2010, 14:31
Too much plot, not enough human killing....

But seriously, they keep on trying to show every character and have them involved in these huge complex plots... I want to see more of the old episode styles.
MmhmmJun 25th 2010, 14:48
A few seriously nitpicky comments here. You expected total continuity from the movies, really?

All things considered it was a great premiere night. Thought "Rebirth" was stronger than the second episode, but I enjoyed both. Pretty strange ending to the latter. Can't wait for next week!
JeffryHouserJun 25th 2010, 15:43
Are there any legit options for watching the full episodes on-line? It seemed that Comedy Central only had clips; and Hulu had nothing from the new season.
renbutlerJun 25th 2010, 17:31
As somebody who was greatly disappointed by the movies (except the first one), and even some of the final season in 2003, my expectations were fairly low.

However, Rebirth had a lot of the humor and charm of the early days of Futurama. The second ep was a little more dull, but still entertaining.

I hope they can keep it up for a full season!
DavidJun 25th 2010, 18:22
Great start to the new season. Very happy the show is back and I hope its on beyond its 26 episode order
DanJun 25th 2010, 18:25
Loved it. Was excited it was back but was worried it would be ruined like Family Guy is now. If they keep pressing on the old jokes it will get annoying. They did a great job especially on the 2nd episode. I love bender but sometimes less is more, and way to throw Zap in the 2nd episode. By far my favorite character.
DAISHIJun 25th 2010, 18:46
Agree with those above who are curious why people were expecting great continuity with the movies. This is still from the creator of the Simpsons and while Futurama does have greater continuity than that show, it discards it where unnecessary.

As far as character development, there are plenty of episodes through the original five season run that were simply there, but hilarious. I wasn't expecting a deep examination of Fry and Leela's love, and in fact, such in depth examinations would probably do more harm than good. They hooked up (finally), but put any too much emphasis on the romance (except for occasional episodes perhaps) and it'll bog the show down.
buhJun 25th 2010, 22:40
I thought both episodes were a little dull. Not bad at all, just 'meh'. I loved a few gags in Rebirth (Hypnotoad, the Professor's 'wrong switch', Zapp at the very end) but I don't think much of In-a-Gadda-Da-Leela.
That said, the storyboards that were posted on the Futurama Countdown blog showed some pretty amusing moments in the episodes to come. I still have plenty of hope for the show.
brianzJun 25th 2010, 23:28
I loved the two episodes. Both were vintage Futurama, funny and well done. I did think both Fry and Leela sounded a little different though but it was not very noticeable. Great comeback episodes and I cant wait for more.
NibblesJun 25th 2010, 23:36
I agree with his "nuetralness". Also the Leela crying for I dont know maybe 20-30 seconds in different frames really got me worried, that's one of the reasons I don't watch stupid shows like Family Guy because they are always doing stuff like that which is not funny and is just a waste of time that could have been used for a funny scene. Hopefully they don't make it a habit, but they sort of did it again with Zap when he was explaining to Leela about what really happened in episode 2. Only time will tell.
KimmieJun 26th 2010, 00:06
I thought the episodes were pretty standard. I don't think its realistic for us, as fans, to expect to be blown away in the first few episodes. The show needs to pick up momentum. I was very satisfied and cannot wait for the upcoming season!
RafaelX9Jun 26th 2010, 03:37
"Rebirth" had a mark against it because it had to continue loose ends from the last movie, but I actually did enjoy it, although I had complaints. Mainly, the flaws are with the actual plot (Fry makes a robot copy of Leela). They'd already done a similar plot with the Lucy Liu episode, so that was a strike against it. Probably had the best jokes of the night, and I especially appreicated that they didn't throw away the new romance between Fry and Leela (always the hopeless romantic).

The second one was also very good, probably better because it had an opportunity to go with a dirtier episode, although the stuff with the Planet Express crew could've had more jokes. And mostly naked Leela-----always good, always good.

An odd ending, though, and the Bible jokes were a bit too throwaway for my taste, but Leela's last line about her laundry....such a simple joke, yet I howled....yet I howled. FUTURAMA LIVES AGAIN!!
AnonymobotJun 26th 2010, 06:02
Being prepared to become strictly a fan of "Futurama Classic" if things went badly, I have to say I thought both episodes were quite good--striking a good balance between continuity (of story, characterization, and the style of the original show) and progression into something a little bit new. There's clear maturation of style, including in the animation which on repeated viewing showed some nice lighting and shading effects. I thought the new ideas fit well into the Futurama universe without becoming caricature or too old-hat (yes, the Lucy Liu-bot parallel, but that episode also establishes a certain amount of precedent that enables the new plot to work, too.).

I also thought the "Transcredible Exploits" conceit was brilliant, even if the setup half of that episode was tighter writing than the 2nd half. Both Bender and Zapp were given parts in both episodes that were funny without being too much, and in that sense these episodes might be better than some of the fourth season.

As someone noted, there may be fewer background jokes here, but there were definitely some interesting things going on in the background in some of the scenes, and at least one numerical joke.

Into the breach, meatbags....
MikeJun 26th 2010, 14:17
Leela jumping at the chance to sleep with Zap bothered me.
EmilJun 26th 2010, 15:52
Loved the first four seasons and thought the movies were ok but not really as good as the original shows. I was also a bit sceptical as to where the show might go in season 6 but all my doubts are gone now. The two episodes were great! Much better than the movies and best of all: I didn't miss anything from the first four seasons. The felt a bit different but both episodes were a lot of fun so I'm ok with that.
LyraJun 26th 2010, 17:30
I'd been counting the days 'til the new episodes came out! I was so excited!
And they lived up to my expectations! It's as if it never was canceled in the first place!
Maybe I'm not used to it anymore, but even though I loved them, I found them a little strange. Hope that feeling disappears with the upcoming episodes.
SeymourMyHeroJun 26th 2010, 17:50
Absolutely loved both episodes, however the ending of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela" bugged me slightly. But nonetheless I'm glad to see the show back :)
dyllanJun 26th 2010, 21:24
I loved "Rebirth"! It was fantastic, I loved how both Fry and Leela made robots for each other. "In-A-Gadda-Leela" I wasn't a big fan of simply because I am a huge fan of the Fry/Leela relationship so the fact that Leela and Zapp "commenced in intercourse" miffed me. But never the less it was, as always, hilarious and fun to watch. I'm glad your back, Futurama, and I hope you stay back for a long time!
flesheatingbullJun 26th 2010, 23:20
i'm happy the show is back, and i expect it to start getting good soon.

however, fry annoyed the heck out of me in both episodes. first off, billy west hasn't got the voice down perfect again; and secondly, the whole leela thing needs to end for now as well. fry being alone and a loser is what people, including myself, want.

all in all, the second episode was better, imo. the only complaint was zapp doing his whining thing, as he wouldn't have done that in an old episode/.
JooJun 27th 2010, 02:21
I'm so happy futurama is back!!
it is my favorite show of all
the rebirth was brilliant, i loved it, the second was a regular episode, I think they should first release the best episodes to catch everyones attention...

It would be great if jon stewart make an appearance in the show, now that is casting in comedy central... =)
tyberiusJun 27th 2010, 03:09
to flesheatingbull:
'fry being alone..is what people want', should be edited to 'fry being alone...is what SOME people want'.
I myself would be happy if fry and leela remain romantically interested.
dillyJun 27th 2010, 05:24
to tyberius:
Thank you! I was thinking the same exact thing! And I love the fact that Leela and Fry are finally happening and I hope that they build on that relationship. There can be other episodes that build onto the relationship (like relationship issues, doubts, etc. that eventually get worked out). It also lets Matt Groening and David X. Cohen to focus on other characters that viewers haven't seen much of.

Jesus I wish someone would hurry up and bring these to New Zealand. RAGE!!!
mastershakeJun 28th 2010, 00:04
I liked the new episodes to. But after that they should cool it with the big dramatic plots for a while and do some classic style plots. I hope they dont try to make the episodes all like the movies.
timJun 29th 2010, 05:43
Pretty ordinary episodes in my opinion. First episode was painful to watch. First half of the second episode was great, but then it went downhill. The increased "adult" content isn't helping the show at all. What I love about Futurama is funny characters going on cool futuristic adventures... not Fry, Leela and Bender saving the entire universe by coincidence every week.
The characters also seemed more irritating than what I'm used to.
I hope the series improves.
qzuiilwJun 29th 2010, 08:47
I'm so glad it's back on air I felt like an addict with no substance, but i was alittle disappointed with both episodes the story lines seemed empty not boring but as if they had put those two up to meet a dead line hopefully the rest of the season will be awesome :)
futuramaheuJun 29th 2010, 22:47
I got a chance to see the episodes before they air (yes I am gloating) and there was one thing I couldn't put my finger on during the first viewing.
While I was watching the broadcast the other night I figured it out.

I think they have a different animator drawing Leela. There are shots of her in profile where her mouth doesn't look quite right. The corner of her mouth is either too big or too rounded, not sure which. To me it makes her look almost clownish, certainly not the sexy Leela mouth I remember.

That is one very small complaint from what was a great REBIRTH of a classic science fiction show cancelled before its time.

THANKS MATT DAVID BILLY and all the folks who have worked so hard to keep this show alive!

Futurama is back and its awesome!!! WOHOO, go Futurama!
JeffJul 2nd 2010, 04:43
I have been able to sit through the first 3 new episodes without laughing once. I had very low hopes for the new season after the terrible movies and was still thoroughly disappointed. Way to ruin a once hilarious show.
FryfroJul 2nd 2010, 07:01
Tell me you all didn't miss
Where's my shoes?
Oh, I didn't realize I was already here. And why are there so many Leelas? Be quiet dork. I'm going to go to the urinal and say some things about myself...

that was like the funniest 4-5 jokes within 10 seconds ever aired on the show and it just seems like everyone has missed a lot of the humor.

Take a look at some of the upcoming episodes... good stuff. I do get the impression the writers feel they need to make up for lost time and are packing a lot of social criticisms in that they missed out on for a few years... too much, too soon perhaps? But it'll get back in a groove soon. Bite my shiny metal app? Great stuff.
4LegsGoodJul 7th 2010, 20:20
Rebirth was great! So good to have the show back. Plot device was fun, but didn't we just see it in BBS. And I'm tired of Fry and Leela, but it's an issue that needs to be dealt with or the show will suffer from the Moonlighting syndrome.

IGdL - Plot device was stupid as was the ending, but it was allllll worthwhile for Zapp. One of the best Zapp eps EVER! Particularly when he's agonizing over his deceptions. And even if the show never produces anything more than adult fart jokes from here on out, it has been worth the whole schebang just for the best Futurama line EVER: "...then we'll write our own Bible, with less Sodom and more Gamorrah!"

I'm still dying. I love you Zapp!!!
