Today I finally purchased Futurama Season One on DVD after over a year of waiting and so far I have watched the first two episodes, I will watch more tonight.

The picture transfer is awesome, absolutely amasing!!! I was blown away with the quality and am very happy that FOX did something right for a change.

The sound quality is also very good although not in 5.1, it is still very clear and has good depth definition.

An absolutely superb start to Futurama on DVD, what do you think?

Could anybody please verify whether the DVD has Dutch subtitles? I have one source stating it does and another that it doesn't. I'd be much obliged if somebody could give a confirmation.
RobinJan 29th 2002, 00:00
The dvd has dutch subtitles (according to some sites)
but do they only sell the dvd in the UK, or in whole Europe?
MichaelJan 29th 2002, 00:00
I only know UK and Germany for sure, but I think it's sold in the whole EU. Check you local Amazon affiliate.
reedJan 29th 2002, 00:00
yeah, I double checked and it has dutch subtitles.
not sure about how you can buy it though. As the other guy said, check Amazon

Does anybody know if the UK Futurama DVD will work in North American players?
WernerPeetersJan 29th 2002, 00:00
I enquired a bit further; there are apparently 2 versions: UK version, containing English CC, Dutch, French, Italian subtitles, and German version including German dubbing and subtitles for most Scandinavian countries. Spanish too, I believe. Maybe they don't feature all commentary tracks. I think unless you need one of these languages the UK version is the one to go for.
It is *not* available outside UK. Belgium for instance no trace of it, so I've been told by a Fox representative (I work for a DVD reviews page (http://www.dvdinfo.be), hence the contact). So I guess you'll have to resort to import. I've spent quite a lot of time today searching the cheapest deliverer. http://www.play.com sell them for UKP 31,99 but since they're based on Jersey, don't deliver to some countries. If they do, you should be careful that you don't have to pay customs taxes, the three disc set exceeds the maximal amount that you can import taxfree by a landslide. If you live in the European mainland, I think a safer choice is http://www.bensonsworld.co.uk, it costs only 0,01 UKP more (32 UKP), because they're in the EU guaranteed free of taxes, and free of postage too!
All other stores I looked up were considerably more expensive (I'm not saying there are no cheaper ones). I guess 32 UK Pounds all-in-no-catches is a decent price. Heck, I would of course even give more to obtain this gem, but why should I if I don't have to?

Normal players in USA won't play it due to PAL and region code 2. In europe it's easy (and legal) to get your DVD player fixed to accept all kinds of DVDs and most TVs here understand NTSC anyway. But America usually is the primary market I guess there wasn't much demand for chipping DVD players to accept region 2 till now ...

Many computer DVD drives can be made to work using firm ware upgrades. Search for "codefree" and your DVD drive name on google.
WernerPeetersJan 29th 2002, 00:00
Stephen, the discs will only work on american players if (1) they're region free, and (2) your TV set/player combination can handle PAL.

Have mercy on us, poor Europeans, for this once that we get something in advance of you US people.
JerkJan 29th 2002, 00:00
When will it be out in the United States?
I_Love_BenderJan 29th 2002, 00:00
No idea, Jerk. You could always buy UK's version of Futurama DVD if you have a region free DVD player.
KreemeePantsJan 29th 2002, 00:00
I have always thought that movies, DVD's, ect. should be released everywhere as close to simultanious as possible. Sure in America we normally get things like that first, but not all Americans are heartless, arrogant, smug, bastards who don't feel sorry for fellow movie fans who miss out and have to wait. Most Americans are, but not all.
WernerPeetersJan 30th 2002, 00:00
The discs won't be issued for some time in the US because of a syndication rights issue. To cut a long story short: various networks have paid to be able to broadcast reruns of the the older episodes. I can imagine they won't like that everybody already owns a copy on DVD then. How would you like to look at your Futurama: in digital quality with no commercial interruptions or "the other way"?
LobsterNbergJan 30th 2002, 00:00
exactly what episodes are there in this box ?
only 9 episodes ?
WernerPeetersJan 30th 2002, 00:00
The 9 episodes from season 1 plus the first four from season 2 (which were originally scheduled for Season 1). So: 'Space Pilot 3000', 'The Series Has Landed', 'I, Roomate', 'Love's Labour's Lost In Space', 'Fear Of A Bot Planet', 'A Fistful Of Dollars', 'My Three Suns', 'A Big Piece Of Garbage', 'Hell Is Other Robots', 'A Flight To Remember', 'Mars University', 'When Aliens Attack' and 'Fry And The Slurm Factory'.
