Futurama Article in USA Today

The upcoming US Futurama DVD set release also has the added advantage of Futurama getting more press exposure. USA Today's Bill Keveney quotes Matt Groening in today's "'Futurama' hits DVD, but show comes to close" article:
"I've gotten more response since it's been on Cartoon Network than in its years on Fox," Groening says. "It's so refreshing to have a network that appreciates the show." [...] The last of Futurama's 72 episodes will provide some closure, but he wishes the show could have continued: "We had so many more stories we were eager to tell."
Going along with Groening's impression, Cartoon Network today posts another success story regarding Futurama:
The Sunday telecast of Futurama scored its highest delivery and rating yet on Cartoon Network with adults 18-34, adults 18-24 and men 18-24. Among adults 18-34, the 1.0 rating was up 233% vs. last year.
The problematic scheduling and promotion situation is addressed in the article, too.

With all this media attention and Futuramas great ratings on Cartoon Network how can Fox not order a new season to be made?
Those people down at Fox are totally crazy!

Me rantee.

FOXecutive: "No, cartoons cost money to make, and for some reason they perform poorly when we constantly pre-empt, reschedule without notice, and refuse to promote them. Besides, the little thing in the cape and diaper confuses me, and makes me cry. No...cheap, moronic, totally-scripted phony-ass 'reality' TV is the wave of the future; I have just relieved my bowels into my own pants--therefore, everyone in America must be stupid enough to keep watching the garbage we churn out for a handful of nickles. Oh, and game shows. "Who Wants To Be A Millionare" is still very hot, right? I'm a genius! ...What's that smell? Hey, who put this in my pants???"

Fox's latest crap reality show, Married by America tanked! I hate to gloat but, hee, hee ,hee. Maybe reality crap is thankfully on it's way out. Maybe now the network will have to look for something new and appealing, creative and growing in popularity. Like, bringing back Futurama and giving it a good time slot and promoting it for change.

At least some attention for futurama.
According to the words of matt it doesn't seem there is much hope left to ever get futurama going again.
But hoping is basically all i do!

C'mon, people! Let's not get so discouraged...we do have a bit of hope left, right?????????????????????????????

Matt and David both love Futurama and would no doubt be up for producing new episodes if someone was willing to put up the money and were willing to give it a decent shot at success.

Cartoon Network has done the latter, but lacks funds to do the former. Hopefully with the numbers and demographics CN is posting, and if the DVD set does well (currently # 73 at Amazon.com among how many thousand DVDs?), someone with the cash and juice will notice.

Sure, many of the original writers and artists may have to be replaced and we are looking at a minimum of a year before episode 501 could be ready, but I have no doubt that Matt and David would still make sure they release top quality product.

the article is now on yahoo news wires too :)
thestonedkoalaMar 5th 2003, 00:00
Hmmm would CN take donations to help produce new episodes of Futurama?
DavidMar 5th 2003, 00:00
It is strange that Matt didn't shop it around to other networks after Fox decided not to renew. Do you think he is prohibited from doing so under some contract?

It is a huge cultural loss that Futurama would be allowed to end just as everything was starting to gel.

Just thought I'd post this....I work at 20th century Fox and just received the petions and thought what the hell, I'll cut out the middle man and deliver them to Gail Berman myself. As I myself love Futurama, but didnt even know about this site until now. So anyway the stack of signitures are on her desk...I did what I can.

Great job Ben if that's true. Nice to see there ARE people at Fox who are willing to support Futurama, even if a few people at the top are frankly clueless.

Anyways, I'm just glad Futurama is finally getting some attention, even if its a little late. The fact that Cartoon Network has helped gain so much publicity for the show certainly says something.

I always thought that Futurama and Cartoon Network's AdultSwim block would be perfect for each other and it seems to be turning out that way. They've promoted Futurama in the last four months more than Fox ever did for the show's entire run. Plus no drops because of a sports program or some such other nonsence. Who knows - maybe CN will start producing new episodes.

It's darkest before the dawn. I read Matt's comments to USA Today and have to think about the comments he made about the Simpsons last year.

While sadly, his comments are more true of Futurama than they were for the Simpsons, I can;t help that maybe he is looking for the same kind of response that the Simpsons comments produced.

Afterall, those of use reading these pages know of Futurama's plight. But, there are those that have no idea. They may be watching the show on CN for the first time not knowing where it came from. Matt's comments publicize Futurama's plight and hopefully brings awareness to a new group of viewers who also may be moved to action.

At least they are promoting the dvd, on the web at least. You can pre-order from the front page. The pre order page includes something interesting...

"Futurama" takes its name from the General Motor's exhibit at the 1939 World's Fair. The exhibit depicted a futuristic landscape. The character Fry's unspoken first name is Philip, which is a tribute to the late Phil Hartman. The late actor was originally cast to do the voice of Zapp Brannigan. According to creator Matt Groening, the hieroglyphic-like letters appearing in various locations throughout the opening animation DO mean something - it is up to loyal viewers to figure it out! Some of the sound effects used in the show are taken from other sci-fi television series, such as "Star Trek" (1966) and "The Jetsons" (1962).

Anyone know this meaning???
