130,000+ Signature Petition Delivered

After a year of watching the petition grow beyond all our expectations, time was running out and it had to be delivered. So, a week ago we had our L.A. guy Jon walk to a print shop with a CDR in his hands. Back at home a day later, two pages of selected quotes by fans, a title page explaining the situation and a neat red ribbon were added to the pile of 1400+ sheets of paper filled with over 130,000 signatures. Going from there, the stack went to Groening's office at the FOX building and was then carried over to FOX CEO Gail Berman's desk yesterday. Let's hope it does trigger some thoughts about where things went wrong for Futurama and how to solve the problems at hand without disappointing the audience.

I'd also like to use this news item to thank petition-online for their service and support throughout that year. If you have a few dollars to donate to them, feel free to do so.

Thanks to you and all those who helped bring this to our attention. I will hope and pray it does something, but thank you again for being such a strong force in letting fox know what they're losing. I just keep hoping that I'll come to your site one day and it'll say in giant red letters

FUTURAMA SAVED!!!!!
KristiMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Let's hope thousands of online signatures will make Gail change her mind.
[-mArc-]Mar 6th 2003, 00:00
In case you are wondering why it is "only" 130,000 when there were over 160,000 on the page: We chose to delete all signatures that consisted out of a first name or nick name only to not jeopardize its credibility.
CarbitoMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Thats it the last hope for Futurama has been sent, lets just hope it makes a difference. Now was the best possible time to send it with the great ratings on Cartoon Network and also the fact that a few episodes are being shown on Fox. 1,400 sheets of paper, that must have cost a lot to print off.
Now we can only hope for a future for Futurama...
FryWalkerMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Do we get to see the two pages of hand picked messages? I hope they were hard hitting and honourable. Scruffy loves his Futurama..
ZMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Great news!! :-D
TeralMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Go mArc! Go Jon!

Lots of editing work done, I guess.

Let's hope, Gail Berman actually take notice, or at the very least Matt will use these numbers as a barganing tool.
blahnessMar 6th 2003, 00:00
awesome!!! hopefully just the sheer size of the stack will open some peoples eyes! :)
GrimMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Good news everyone :D

That's great, hope it at least makes them hurry up and play the remaining eps.
wow 130,000 fans on the internet alone!
PavelMar 6th 2003, 00:00
OK, Don't get me wrong, I am a big Futurama fan, but I have mixed feelings about this. Is it really necessary to make new episodes? I have watched every episode aired so far, and I must say that the show is not as good as it used to be. In season 5, I liked only first two, with Jurrasic Bark being probably my favorite of all Futurama episodes. All others were considerably weaker, and if after 'The Route of all Evil' I thought that that was just one weak episode, after the last one, 'Less than Hero' I am afraid that creators are running out of ideas.
I do not want Futurama to become what The Simpsons are right now, I think it is better if Futurama will be remembered as a great show that got unfairly cancelled (we can blame FOX for that), rather than show that lasted way too long, and became uninteresting. Think about it.
If you have any comments feel free to email me: Pavel_RP@Hotmail.com
It is nice to see Futurama fans showig their support though! Good job guys! (I also signed an online petition a while ago btw).
Awesome website! "Awesome to the MAX"
SimoneMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Sweet! My comment was picked... I'm the Simone in the online petition. :)
PipianMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Too bad this prob. won't work.. :-( But We can always hope...
SRMMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Great work everyone!

I hope it works. I'm optimistic because:

1. Reality shows appear to be fading in popularity and the networks need to start looking for something different.
2. Futurama is a really great show.
3. The Futurama DVD set is coming out soon and has a high ranking in preorder sales.
4. Great ratings on Cartoon Network.
5. Star Trek was saved with a huge fan based petition.
6. Fox which is money driven, could make out with product marketing of Futurama.
7. Matt can always use the Simpsons as leverage.

Long live Futurama!
JamesMar 6th 2003, 00:00
In response to Pavel, are you nuts! Of course Futurama should keep going, there is no loss in quality, infact it just gets better and better!

I really hope this petition works, I signed it (a long time ago).
In other kinda related news, I picked up a copy of the UK DVD magazine DVD Review today, and Futurama season 3 (region 2) is listed on the release chart (with a "Hot DVD" icon) for June 2nd (this is confirmed by Fox) also strangley (and frustratingly) The Simpsons season 3 has been set back to an August release! In another part of the magazine listing the all time top 30 DVDs of each genre, Futurama Season 2 comes in at 13 in the animated section (season 1 is at 14, and The Simpsons season 2 is at 26).

I know that many Futurama fans are also family Guy fans (i'm not, but anyway) the magazine also lists the season 3 release for May.
CliveMar 6th 2003, 00:00
James, what do you mean that the release date of june the 2nd is confirmed by fox. DVD review often lists release dates that are only rumours.
CDAMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Just want to point out that Star Trek was not saved by a fan petition, or really any other action by the fans. Gene Roddenberry floated the rumor that it was going to be cancelled to whip up fandom, but NBC decided to renew it all on their own.
TheScreamingScallopMar 6th 2003, 00:00
I wouldn't go so far as to call Pavel nuts, but he should bear in mind that every series has "slack" periods. Sometimes it's the show, sometimes it's the viewer.

Personally, I think the current airing season has had plenty of episodes with missed opportunities to be as completely and utterly insane as earlier episodes featuring two-headed transplants, robotic Satans and satanic Santas, and super-societies of bowel worms. But that's the sort of lack that passes in a given season, when the crew looks back and sees something missing.

(There's always the chance that "The Simpsons" will pull itself out of the ditch I feel it's been wallowing in for two or three years; some people think those two or three years are the best the show's ever had. Whattaya gonna do?)
AslateMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Well, 1,400 pages is alot, just imagine it with the extra 30,000 posts. I hope FOX take some note!
OtisPJivefunkMar 6th 2003, 00:00
That's GREAT that the petition has been delivered, and I agree with the person further up who said it's great timing. Congrats everyone who contributed and helped. At least we can't say we didn't try.
KazzahdraneMar 6th 2003, 00:00
I am not a religious man in any way, but as i write this I am about to go to bed, and for the first time in my life I am going to pray; that Crazy Gail reads the petition, decided to check out this "Futurama" nonsense, and falls in love with the show as so many of us have done. If the head of FOX was to support the show it's success could be almost limitless.

If this is the end, then at least we tried our best. May CGEF and PEEL live on forever, there will be merchandise for many years to come.

LONG LIVE FUTURAMA!!!
JamesMar 6th 2003, 00:00
Clive, i know that DVD review often posts rumors but this information was backed up by a press release from Fox that included many other release dates for other shows such as buffy, family guy...
So its not a rumour it is the current situation.
TinnyTimMar 6th 2003, 00:00
I agree with those that say the quality has slipped some, and while it would be great to have the show continued, we'd have to wait well over a year for new episodes (certainly not next fall...) A whole new staff would need to be hired, which has been pointed out several times before... Considering these circumstances, I also agree it's best to end it. Obviously, the show should be remembered for being something great, and that it drew an enormous amount of dedicated fans. From the description I saw, I think "The Devil's Hands are Idol Playthings" sounds like a good episode to finish on... if Fox airs it!

My only problem with the petition:
The quote about sexual attraction to Fox employees doesn't seem like one of the best choices to put on the page with selected messages...
klingMar 6th 2003, 00:00
GREAT NEWS!!!!! GREAT NEWS!!!!!! I hope this petition will knock some sense into their heads that FUTURAMA is a great show and that they are idiots for canceling it in the first place. Let's all hope that this petition does something because 130,000+ signatures are
klingMar 6th 2003, 00:00
GREAT NEWS!!!!! GREAT NEWS!!!!!! I hope this petition will knock some sense into their heads that FUTURAMA is a great show and that they were complete bastards for canceling it in the first place. Let's all hope that this petition does something because 130,000+ signatures are ALOT OF SIGNATURES and FUTURAMA does not deserve TO DIE.

FUTURAMA FOR EVER!!!!! **crossing my fingers**
ANNAMar 6th 2003, 00:00
i love futurama--hate fox for changing all its programming! THE HELL TO FOX
JamesMar 7th 2003, 00:00
What i don't get is why anyone would say that the show should be cancelled because its not as good as it used to be. What is your reasoning? If somethings not the funniest show I've ever seen every week, just cancel it. Isn't it possible that you are thinking of the early episodes in a positive light cuz you remember all the good parts and that makes the newer ones seem worse? If theres a chance that the Futurama staff could make something really funny over the next few years, then why wouldn't you want them to do it?
Having 99% positive memories of the show would be better to you than having twice as much show and 90% positive memories?
Geez
MichaelMar 7th 2003, 00:00
Good work. Hopefully this will get some attention. Have you notified any local newspapers or TV stations about the petition? It would likely get coverage, and if it did, this puts more pressure on FOX. Just a thought. Whether Futurama gets brought back or not, at least we tried.
DaveCMar 7th 2003, 00:00
long live futurama. lets just pray it changes anything.

to people like James and Pavel - you poor misguided children... ;)

who sez futurama's gonna get worse in the long term? the thing is - the core of the show, regardless of small seasonal changes in quality, is so awesome that, given the same chances and promotion as the simpsons, it would surely grow to the same heights of popularity. and given heaps of extra seasons it wouldn't matter if the 5th production season wasn't superduperfuturamahardcorefan-satisfyingly perfect, cause it would in all likelyhood improve dramatically once the new production team got into the vibe of things.
CliveMar 7th 2003, 00:00
Okay James, i've just not seen the DVD release confirmed anywhere, other than BBFC certification.
loserfanMar 7th 2003, 00:00
Say what you will but Futurama's lose will be felt by many: for different reasons.

It was interesting and heartbreaking to watch some characters develop and grow. Futurama was beginning to balance character development (not as drastic as kingoth) with off the wall hilarity.

JeevesMar 7th 2003, 00:00
Farscape had quite a great deal more petitions than just 130,000, and still the idiot exec's will not renew it.

It goes to show, no matter how good a tv show may be, it is always up to idiot execs. And FOX ones seem to be on the same IQ level as SCI-FI ones.
IagreeMar 7th 2003, 00:00
Remove this text and type your comment here. Please no download questions and no spoilers (information on episodes that didn't air yet).
JamesMar 7th 2003, 00:00
To Dave C and anyone else, i just want to make it clear that i do not think in any way that futurama should end, comment number 26 was made by another "James".
I'm the James who made comment number 14.
JamesDeanJamesMar 8th 2003, 00:00
uhh, i don't know how it ever got construed that i wanted Futurama to end. I wrote #26.
The whole thing was a writeup of how i couldnt believe anyone would want futurama to end.
Anyone who thinks it should end now while theres no chance of it getting worse... thats like saying I should end my life now before it has a chance to get worse. I'm just gonna spend the rest of my life working... It'll be boring and repetitive.
=P
DaveCMar 8th 2003, 00:00
i didn't mean to offend anyone, sorry if there were any misunderstandings
ShuteRMar 8th 2003, 00:00
"Farscape had quite a great deal more petitions than just 130,000, and still the idiot exec's will not renew it. "

Farscapes an Australian show, and the most expensive one to produce per epsiode ever [in australia] ($1million an episode I believe).

And *cough* I'm very glad to see it go, I found that show very lame indeed.
DannyBotMar 8th 2003, 00:00
GREAT JOB, NOW JUST HOPE THEY DONT STASH THESE PETITIONS WEVE SENT!
PavelMar 8th 2003, 00:00
I think noone, or very few people understood me here. The funniest comment was the one where someone called me and some other guy "poor misguided children". Another one was good, where someone compared the whole future of cartoon to one's life...
Well, I can compare this to life too. Do you think it is better for a person to live well into their 90's, while not being able to move, not being able to speak, needing supervision 24/7, requiring others to feed them, and to change their diapers? (sorry for such details) I want Futurama to live, but not like that.
I DO WANT Futurama to continue, I would love to see a lot of new episodes, BUT NOT episodes like "the Route of all Evil", (and it is probably gonna get worse from there).
I do not think this is just a little slump for Futurama, I think this is the major fall, and maybe that's why FOX cancelled it (I am not trying to defend them btw). If you want Futurama to drag on, on "life support" from fans, I am not going to blame you, just don't come here later, and whine that episodes are boring. Again, THINK about it, cause simply saying "We want Futurama, FOX is bad (which it is)" are thoughts of poor misguided children.

This is just my opinion, that's what this message board is for right?
[-mArc-]Mar 9th 2003, 00:00
Yupp, the comments are meant to express opinions (and to allow us at CGEF to get some feedback on what we're doing).

A little bit of info though: "The Route of All Evil" is actually out of the middle of season 3. FOX just thought it would be funny to wait with introducing Hermes' son Dwight for a few more seasons.

The quality of the episodes is not purely season dependent in my view. Many of the writers still have stellar records after these years. New ones need some time to fit in.
JamesDeanMar 9th 2003, 00:00
Ha. Take that Pavel. You hate an episode that was created YEARS ago, and you hate it because you think every episode made after it will suck!
Woooooo
ShuteRMar 9th 2003, 00:00
I seem to be outnumbered, but I really liked the route of all evil.
JamesMar 9th 2003, 00:00
Well if it's good or not, the route of all evil is on Sky One in the UK next Sunday at 7, i'll let you know what I think then. But how can it be that bad, other Futurama episodes that are considered "bad" are still incredibly entertaining and a billion times better than anything else on TV. It's just that by Futurama's amazing standards they're not the best.
Also, without wanting to start a petty fight, Pavel (IF that is your real name) sounds like an idoit, an idoit who didn't get his facts straight.
Now that the petition has been delivered, when can we expect a response or any sign that it might have an effect?
RickyMar 15th 2003, 00:00
What's better than having 1400 sheets of signatures delivered to Gail Berman?
Having 130.000 signatures delivered one by one on separate sheets! It would cost an obscene amount of time and money, but Fox wouldn't be able to turn the signature sheets into orphanage-grade toilet tissue.
CartmanMar 17th 2003, 00:00
(@#10)No offense, but you're a bit airheaded to think Futurama should NOT go on.
Are you sure you're a big Futurama fan?
LisaMar 17th 2003, 00:00
Long live Futurama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JamesDeanMar 18th 2003, 00:00
Rumor: Pavel = Rupert Murdoch
HelperMar 23rd 2003, 00:00
Is there some FOX exoc's writing in here? I doubt chimps are that clever. Root of all evil was poor. So was kiff/amys romance on mars. Minor characters are dull. though Amy is quite cute.
6 bad apples in season #3 out of 26. I hope #4 is better. What about those 2 pages mentioned on top?
FilthyCrabMar 31st 2003, 00:00
Great to see the petition delivered. With any luck, that much paper on Berman's desk will cause it to collapse. Take that, ye who would kill Futurama.
alxApr 2nd 2003, 00:00
I really can't understand , how one "dares" to cancel such funny entertainment as FUTURAMA. I'm talking about the best adult cartoon out on the market , out in the media . Nothing , and I mean nothing can replace FUTURAMA ...the one who canceled it , must bring it back on air . AND DO SO NOW!!!!!!!!!!!///ALX sweden
