Groening bashes FOX Network

An article titled "Keeping in 'Toon" on the canadian site canoe.ca gives us some information about Groening's thoughts on FOX and our delivered petition:
"The people at Fox didn't ever support the show and it wasn't to their taste and, in my opinion, they're out of their minds. [...]
The fans loved (Futurama), but they couldn't find it. It never got promoted. The fans delivered a petition with 130,000 signatures and there was no reaction from Fox.
We won the Emmy for best animated show a few months ago and I didn't even get a begrudging phone call from anyone at Fox. That's a dark company that they can't even make a fake phone call."
Harsh words showing the frustration of Futurama's creator. We ourselves never got a response regarding the petition, either.

In other news: Marge's chest size didn't reflect in the ratings. With a 5.1/8 Nielsen primetime metered market rating it fell considerably from the previous week (5.8/9), was easily beaten by King of the Hill's 5.5/9 and only 0.1 higher than the last Futurama episode (5.0/8), which ran without any notable promotion I know of.

Good on Matt for standing up for us and the show.
JamesMar 19th 2003, 00:00
They didn't even repsond to the petition?! Those ba@#*$
NickMar 19th 2003, 00:00
No none of that's possible, it's proposterous...
Fox is now like some evil government conspiracy gone wrong; soon they will take over your bodies and program to watch something of the genre "world's blankiest blank!"....
CarbitoMar 19th 2003, 00:00
Before this I thought the petition was a ray of hope for Futurama, I thought it would make a difference. Now I know that there is really no hope left for our beloved Futurama.
RyanMar 19th 2003, 00:00
Fox does not have a future with me as a viewer. This is outragous. I am tired of the crap they push on us. At least I will be able to continue to see Futurama on the ever excellent Cartoon Network.
DanimalMar 19th 2003, 00:00
Can you imagine that? They didn't even have the decency to give him a congratulatory phone call?! All he's done for them is give them one of the most critically acclaimed and successful shows ever for the past 13 years, and another show that would have been a hit if they had the ability to grasp the obvious fact that it should have been slotted in after The Simpsons. Doing that and promoting it even the tiniest bit would have ensured holding at least most of The Simpsons audience. Meanwhile, dreck like Oliver Beene gets that cushy time slot and is promoted CONSTANTLY. Not even a friggin' phone call......my head hurts.......I think I should go lay down for a while.
ScottOMar 19th 2003, 00:00
You go girl...
r3ticMar 19th 2003, 00:00
i'm with you, ryan...boycott fox!!!
DrZaiusMar 19th 2003, 00:00
well, at least we know all the horrible grusome details. But, why bocott the show just because your not getting creative input, its so stupid. Its like they've done all this just to show Matt who's boss.

Now they're probably in denial of the fact they've made a mistake.
wafflekingMar 19th 2003, 00:00
i wish groening took Simpsons to another network JUST to spite FOX.... they could've dont it too i bet, since they just renewed.
BrainSluggoMar 19th 2003, 00:00
I am looking forward to April 27th or so, when "Large Marge" will pre-empt "Futurama" again. It will be followed by four new "Simpsons" episodes:

"Bart Opens His Carotid Artery"
"Maggie Shoots Santa's Little Helper, Then Lisa, Then Herself"
"Moe The Necrophiliac"
and
"Clip Show Clip Show, or We're Bored Posuers Who Ran Out Of Ideas Three Seasons Ago And Have Been Laughing Our Asses Off At You Morons The Whole Time--Fools!"
WoodMar 19th 2003, 00:00
FOX never liked the show in the first place, they never even hyped it or anything. Never once besides the first season did I ever see a comercial for Futurama. So when FOX finally got in a position where they could pull the plug, they did, and they will never look back. In their minds the battle is over, and they have won. All we can do now is hope that FOX will finally air the last few Futurama episodes. Maybe we will get lucky and Cartoon Network will get the rights to them once FOX's "season" is over.
LeahMar 19th 2003, 00:00
Wow. Fox has bitten the hand that feeds it. It's just good to see that Matt is openly bashing the Fox network. Sadly, it seems that Futurama is a lost cause. Let's just hope that, if Matt makes another TV series, he does it under another network. Because, without a doubt, Fox would destroy it if it were up to them. Anyway, I'm also boycotting Fox. And why not? All the shows they show, except for Futurama, of course, are crap, anyway.
ChrysMar 19th 2003, 00:00
Oh man, talk about a bad move from Fox. I just hope there's some other way to bring the show back in business. I actually considered to move to America only so I could boycott Fox...
FoxshouldpayBigTimeMar 19th 2003, 00:00
I think it is a mistake that The Simpsons are signed (or jailed however you look at the situation) to Fox for two more seasons. Matt Groening should took The Simpsons off of Fox and let another network to take it over. This way Matt has a chance to say "F-you" and Fox will get a major slap to their ugly faces when their network goes down the toliet money-wise. Also, it would be sweet payback for Matt. But still, Fox would have Futurama in "jail" for as long they want to.
SpaceCaseMar 19th 2003, 00:00
Bully for Matt G!
The Fox exec's have painted themselves into a corner. They made the biggest programming mistake of the last five years by not supporting Futurama.
Further, Matt G. has too much integrity to use his clout from The Simpsons as leverage to bolster Futurama.
So, I suppose the best we Futurama fans can hope for is that Matt G. will take Futurama to another more enlightened network. But, don't hold your breath: At Fox's current rate of airing, he won't have the uncontested legal right to do so until we're all living in old-folks homes.
Unless some miracle happens...
RorschachMar 19th 2003, 00:00
...sigh... I wonder why I keep posting comments, I just keep repeating myself again and again anyway. I mean all you guys said it, I said it, we all sait it, the damn whole world said it: F*** those damn non-caring, low-IQ, crap talking, s**t-eating, goat sodomizing, show-stealing, now-crappy-Simpsons-hugging, stinking-King-of-the-Hill-showing, lame-Joe-millionaire-praising, Futurama-flushing, asshole bastards at Fox!!! These stinking assholes respect the producers the same way they respect the viewers: by not giving a damn crap about them!

I'll tell you what's the best impossible miracle that could happen for a Futurama fan. Having the show switched to another channel AND Fox going bankrupcy. Now THAT is a sweet dream!
BCMar 19th 2003, 00:00
Wood: I agree with you. I hope that Cartoon Network/Adult Swim does get rights to the new eps since Fox is being.. well, yea. At least the eps would be easier to catch on time on CN than having to try to watch them on an early prime time on Fox..
GOGROENINGMar 19th 2003, 00:00
LOL NICE GOING MATT YA KNOW I THINK MATT HAS ENOUGH MONEY TO TAKE THESE DUMB ASSES OUT IN THE DESERT AND HAVE THEM SHOT, THEREFORE GROENING CAN TAKE OVER FOX AND WE'LL ALL BE HAPPY WITH GOOD QUALITY AND FUNNY TV, AND AS FOR THE FOX EXECS WHO GROENING TAKES OUT AND SHOOTS I DONT THINK ANYONE LIKES THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE SO WE REALLY WOULDNT CARE ABOUT THEIR DEPARTING LOL NICE GOIN MATT MAYBE NOW YOULL BE ABLE TO TAKE UR SHOWS TO A DIFF NETWORK AND TELL FOX TO STICK IT UP THEIR TAILPIPE! OR YOU COULD DO WHAT I PUT UP ABOVE I MEAN YOU HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO DO THAT LOL!
KnowOneMar 20th 2003, 00:00
Like what Marge said in Lisa's Wedding "You know FOX turned into a hard-core sex channel so gradually, Know one even Noticed" I think its coming ture.
helltofoxMar 20th 2003, 00:00
THE HELL WITH FOX--THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT $.Remove this text and type your comment here. Please no download questions and no spoilers (information on episodes that didn't air yet).
JamesMar 20th 2003, 00:00
Wait, you mean after Fox finally finish airing the last Futurama episodes, Matt can legally take futurama to another network and start production again1?

Or have got the wrong end of the stick?

If what i said above is correct, then there's still hope, sure it may take a couple of years but eventualy Futurama will be free from the iron grip of fox!
Or will Fox eventually get around to showing all the episodes but one. So that legally they still own the rights?! I bet that's what they'll do!

DAMN THEM, DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL!
BaddbloodMar 20th 2003, 00:00
It wont happen, like Matt said the writers and the characters have moved on. It's just a f*cked up situation.
JamesMar 20th 2003, 00:00
So it's a f*cked up situation, but technically/legally could it happen?
imhMar 20th 2003, 00:00
I don't think Fox really cares for $, otherwise they would show Futurama more ; BTY Jurassic Park 2 seems to be preempting Futurama this sunday too.
SRMMar 20th 2003, 00:00
You would think that Matt could sue Fox for Restraint of Trade. Afterall it's painfully obvious to anyone familiar with the situation what Fox is doing. I say sue the bastards!

As for it to be impossible to ever create new episodes, nothing is impossible in Hollywood. As long as someone comes up with enough $$$. CN has revived other animated shows with mixed success. Who knows, when Fox finally folds maybe CN will create new episodes of Futurama.
FoxNeedsToBeSlapSillyMar 20th 2003, 00:00
I think it is kind of pathatic of what Fox is showing this Sunday. Jurassic Park? That movie is nothing but a bunch of scientists running away from the monster.Hmmm... How ironic it could be if Matt Groening was the monster(Only to Fox,Matt G. is god to us.) and he chased down the Fox Execs. with a big fat lawsuit. I would watch that movie.
JamesMar 20th 2003, 00:00
I don't want to start a petty war here but, NOBODY SLAGS OF JURASSIC PARK! But it is pretty stupid that it's pre-empting Futurama on Sunday as the film is readily available on DVD to watch anytime.
Sorry, I just felt like voicing my opinion on JP, Futurama is my favourite TV show but Jurassic Park and the works of Steven Spielberg are another passion of mine.
FoxNeedsToBeSlappedSillyMar 20th 2003, 00:00
I'm sorry James for slagging on Jurassic Park. It's probably a great movie, but I just don't find it interesting to me. Anyways you would understand how easily it can be to hate something that will pre-empts your favorite shows. The true bad guy here is Fox. But still the idea of Matt Groening and friends chasing down the Fox execs. would seem to be a cool movie.
KristinMar 20th 2003, 00:00
I'm a 42 year old female viewer in Norway. I just want to express how *much* I've enjoyed Futurama on TV2 here, as well as DVD seasons one and two. I must have seen each episode 20 times now. And I only want more. The levels and depth of those episodes is amazing. SO.. the one week I watch them WITH comments, and the next without. Etc.

I've decided to always buy the Futurama DVDs before i buy the equivalent Simpsons season on DVD. Money talks. My meager means likely mumble far too low to make any impact on the FOX policy, but now I've told! I won't spend another cent on you, FOX, if you terminate Futurama. Ever.

I thought a solid company like FOX would honor obligations to stockholders. I think they must be aware that Futurama is a potential money-machine. Far outweighing Simpsons, if only they let it.
I hope one day the full story behind their peculiar attitudes towards that show will be known to the public. There's a whole thriller right there, likely. Someone said people at FOX were insulted because they weren't granted more direct influence on creative aspects of Futurama.
Personally I consider it possible that Rupert Murdoch has crossed the border to insanity.
Next thing you know he'll be dancing nude on Broadway throwing money about.
NeroMar 21st 2003, 00:00
There's not much to say really. All of you have said it so well. FOX sucks. They are the worst broadcasting network ever. Maybe once they were good, but that's all gone now. It was nice that Matt spoke out a little, and I hope he continues to bach FOX on the Simpsons.

I can't remember which ep it was, but in one there came a commercial for Joe Millionaire (I think) rolling on the screen infront of Homer, and he ate it (of course), but spit out the FOX logo.. That was great..
imhMar 21st 2003, 00:00
It's not JP1, which was a good movie, it's JP2 which was a poor attempt to capitalize on a succsessful(sp?) movie. I don't think either should preempt futurama.
sdfMar 21st 2003, 00:00
The Futurama Drama is nuts. Screw FOX and their crappy shows (except 24). I hope Oliver Beene goes to hell.
JamesMar 21st 2003, 00:00
To number #32. JP2 (or The Lost World) is far from "a poor attempt to capatalize on a successful movie". It's an underated gem. Although overall it is slightly inferiour to the original, many scenes easily surpass it. JP2 contains some of the best action and suspense sequences is Spielbergs career. e.g. the incredible suspense sequence involving the key characters hanging over a cliff in a trailer, with only a thin (and slowly cracking) layer of glass to stop them from falling, the raptors in the long grass, the dark opening scene...

This is the last comment I will make on the topic, as i am fully aware that this is a Futurama site. Although I am a big fan of Jurassic Park, i think it's bloody stupid that Fox is pre-empting Futurama yet again. This week in the UK we will see A Taste of Freedom, then we will only be two weeks behind the US. I just hope that Sky One has the rights to overtake Fox. other wise the series will have to pause until Fox get their A-into-G! (that's Arse into Gear, i'm not sure that expression gets used in America?)
FireFlyRamaMar 21st 2003, 00:00
Firefly..Futurama. Two great, amazing shows that never stood a chance on Fox.

Gail Berman is the Bride of the Anti-Christ. I await the day when she's found dead in a hotel room with Bonnie Hammer from Sci-Fi in a perverse and grusome erotic asphixiation accident.
JoeAnybodyMar 21st 2003, 00:00
First, FOX's only good show now is 24. The Simpsons is still not as good as the early years, and everything else sucks. FOX should stick American Idol in the Sunday at 7pm slot. As for JP, JP1 was a masterpiece. JP2 was really good, up to the point where the T-Rex was in the city. JP3 was excellent, but copied too much of JP1. If there's a JP4, one would hope that Jeff Goldblum would return, like Sam Neill in JP3.
LarchmanMar 22nd 2003, 00:00
FOX is evil. Watch FOX and be damned for all eternity.

Once my tape for Simpsons ends that will be the last time I ever watch the FOX network.
YukioMar 24th 2003, 00:00
Yes Fox sucks. This reminds me of when they took off the Critic, which was a great show. They also had Family Guy too (I think?). Either way it disapeared. It gets replaced with smut.
jojoMar 24th 2003, 00:00
sadley i think one of us has to sleep with the fox people and even thats a long shot
tehApr 2nd 2003, 00:00
I believe that after the way Fox has f***ed around with Futurama, Matt G. should sever all ties with Fox and News Corp. and should move all his future projects to AOL Time Warner (which owns Cartoon Network, Warner Brothers, the WB, HBO, and of course America Online)! Look at the way AOLTW promotes its properities like Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Sex and the City, and the like. If Futurama was on WB, you can bet that they would promote the hell out out of it, even using the AOL service. So, my advice to Matt G., Leave Fox and go to Warner Brothers! DEATH TO FOX!!! Long Live AOL TIME WARNER!! LONG LIVE FUTURAMA!!!
