Futurama DVD Season 1 Review

With the Futurama DVD set arriving in the USA in a mere 2 days, it was time to update our 'Futurama DVD: Season 1' review (meaning, rewrite from scratch).
The DVDs are currently ranked #18 in the sales chart at amazon.com and you can still preorder the set at 25% off from them.

UPDATE: Just saw the first few DVD sets being dispatched from amazon.

Ordering over amazon also helps us pay for the running costs for this site as we get a small referral fee.

The DVD section of WWW.IGN.COM gave a very good review of the Futurama DVD's.
KazzahdraneMar 23rd 2003, 00:00
Nice, well balanced review mArc. For anyone wondering whether to buy the set, you should and yes the quality gets even better on the Season 2 set.

That's pretty impressive that the DVD's are at number 18 on the Amazon.com sales chart. When the Season One & Two DVD's were released here in England on Amazon. co.uk they both did very well (peaking at number 1!, and staying in the top 20-30 for ages). But considering that Amazon. com is the international site, it must mean that a hell of a lot of people are buying them to keep them anywhere near the top of the chart!

Even though the region 2 Futurama DVDs have been a huge success, Fox haven't taken any notice. Now that they are getting successful in the US lets hope the can't ignore it! Maybe they'll renew the show, purely for marketing potential/ profit (not out of respect for the show), but who care if it happens!

I already bought it here in NYC, at 6th ave and W14th. They sell everything a week early :)
MrRidiculousMar 23rd 2003, 00:00
I got my copy at Wal-Mart on Friday...Ha Ha four days early. What's with all the packaging? There are three disks, each with their own boxes, inside a box, inside another box.
FrysGIRLMar 23rd 2003, 00:00
Well, what do you know. It was bumped up to #16.
BornintheUKMar 24th 2003, 00:00

MatboislimMar 24th 2003, 00:00

ToddMar 24th 2003, 00:00
Well, I imported the PAL version (which I can only play on my computer at work), and I have every episode on my TiVo...but I think I'll buy it anyway, just to support the cause. :D
CyberKnightMar 24th 2003, 00:00
Are the US cases like the British or like the Spanish ones (plastic slide-off cover with an inner cardboard box as opposed to a single cardboard box)?
JonahFalconMar 24th 2003, 00:00
Plastic slide-off.

Curse this clerck at Metro video.

I went over today after reading that some of you had already seen the box set on the shelves of wall mart.

Here is how it went:

Sebastien: Hello!

Clerk: Hiya.

S.: Say, I've heard that Futurama Season 1 DVD was in store.

C.: Dunno. Lemmie check in my puter.

S.: ... ... ...

C.: Here it is... It'll sell on March 25. That's tomorrow for you.

S.: Soooo... if it sells tomorrow. When will you receive your first shipment?

C.: Chances are we already have recieved it. It must be in the backstore.

S.: Interesting... Say, can I have one?

C.: Nope.

S.: Huh? Why?

C.: Because it sells on March 25.

S.: But you already got 'em right?

C.: Right.

S.: And you won't sell me one?

C.: Extacly.

S.: Why?

C.: Because it's illegal.

S.: No exceptions? Even if you... lest's say... sell me a copy by mistake.

C.: Nope. Come back tomorrow.

And that's exactly how it went.

Now I have to wait a full 24 hours to get it.

Take care fellow Futurafan.

Seb

#11, dunno if I read your post wrong, but the British box is the slip plastic case too.

Good news everyone, well if you live in the UK. Today I recieved the latest issue of the Sky customers magazine. In the One to Watch section for Sunday 6th April the Episode Less than Hero is featured with a short episode synopsis and a picture (it's actually the prom-pic for Crimes of the Hot, stupid editor). So this confirms that Sky will show atleast this far into season '5', Kiff gets Knocked Up a Notch is also scheduled for next Sunday in the on-screen interactive schedules. The cover story for this month is the Simpsons 300th episode celebration. Interestingly enough the first sentance of the article mentions Futurama. Nothing informative, but atleast it remind the casual viewer that Futurama also still exists! Hopefully by the time Less than Hero airs on Sky, Fox will be a couple of episodes ahead again, to keep the UK season running smoothly incase they aren't allowed to air them before Fucks, oh sorry I mean Fox (easy mistake to make).

NixorboMar 25th 2003, 00:00
It shipped! Woohoo!
DanimalMar 25th 2003, 00:00
I haven't heard from Amazon yet. I know it's just being released today, but the waiting is killing me. Not to mention that I took their free shipping offer, and that means it may take an extra 3-5 days! What was I thinking?! By the way, for anyone who's already picked it up, is there any sort of promotional thing packed in mentioning when Season Two will be coming out?
PipianMar 25th 2003, 00:00
I bought it yesterday, when I went to the store, they scanned it in, I paid for it, but then they said that they shouldn't have done it, but let me go with it anyway...
JasonMPeaveyMar 25th 2003, 00:00
Pipian, that happened to me when I attempted to purchase the boxed set for the show "24", hehe.. I didn't realize it was a day before the release date.... they said it was illegal to sell it to me right then, but then they let me purchase it anyway :) LOL
KristiMar 26th 2003, 00:00
I got my DVD today from Best Buy (the local Wal-Mart didn't have it). Then I watched it for 8 straight hours. Yes, I'm obsessed.
SRMMar 26th 2003, 00:00
Good news everyone! (at least at my house)

Mine arrived from Amazon yesterday! Woohoo!
F-BMar 27th 2003, 00:00

Although I did get the nice surprise of finding copies on the shelf a full week early, it wasquickly balanced out by finding this site and realizing that season 2 has been out since late last year overseas. God how I hate the U.S. marketplace, slowing everything down to a crawl. They tell the press about their release slates so damn far ahead of time. Quit dangling carrots and just release the things! but enough of that whining...
I'd like to know what's different about the european cover, since the pictures make it look much thicker, with episode titles fitting on the spine. The US edition is thinner, with very slimline snapcases for each disc (a welcome change from the fear of snapping the discs trying to pry them from one of those clear-plastic-glued-to-cardboard type covers most other multi-disc sets come in. It also provides more room for the cover art, since there's plenty of cover area to utilize. The whole presentation would lead you to believe this is a show that gets a lot of respect from it's parent company, not at all a show they'd pre-empt everytime someone throws a ball in front of a camera. Yep, it's time to feel GOOD about watching Futurama. Next football season, when Fox gets in full pigskin mode, I'll just pop in a disc and tell 'em to cram it. (hey, we MIGHT even get season 2 by then!)
GlassGoblinMar 29th 2003, 00:00
So, can anyone who owns both the UK and US versions of the season 1 DVD tell if there is any content difference besides the selection of languages?
