Where the Futurama is now

With the DVD set being out, there comes some extra publicity for the show. IMDb had it on its front page (though they misspelled Leela as "Lena"), amazon.com currently has it on sales rank 5 in the top selling DVDs, several DVD sites posted reviews of the set (all of them pretty much praising the it) and the LA Times/CalendarLive has a Futurama feature called "Where the 'Futurama' is now" in which they quote Groening on his feelings towards Futurama:
"I feel about 'Futurama' the way Paul McCartney must feel about Wings. It's tough to compare anything to 'The Simpsons,' but I'm incredibly proud of 'Futurama.' The show is still alive, even though it's no longer supported by its original network, Fox. It's on Cartoon Network now. We're still working on 'Futurama' comic books and toys, and we've been talking about 'Futurama' movies. Just a few days ago, fans of the program submitted a petition to save it that had 130,000 signatures. Even by TV standards that's pretty amazing."
The article continues with different persons' views on the creation process of Futurama.
This also answers the "will comics continue" question and confirms that the much rumoured about Futurama Movie is at "talking about" levels, but no further yet.

That was a brilliant and honest article. I'm glad that somebody finaly put Futurama in perspective. It really makes me mad when ignorant people write off Futurama as "a failure". This is because they only compare the financial/commercial success of the two shows, not the critical success and quality of the episodes.
Because of Fox's disgusting treatment of a genuine 'work of genius', Futurama may never be seen by as many people as it deserves. Greoning will always be known as "the creator of The Simpsons" (and he deserves to be because that is a brilliant groundbreaking show), but Futurama is Matts real masterpiece! There may only be 72 episodes but they represent quality not quantity.

Well atleast there is still hope to get futurama movie. And if that is big hit someone has to buy rights to order more episodes =P

Why the hell would the movie need to be a big hit in order to have more episodes made? The original show was a big hit. That's all we needed.

The movies will come, I'm sure. This show is to much of a hit to not be made in to a movie.

I mean, They have already made 10 Star Trek movies, And Futurama is all that Star Trek is, Only much Funnier.

The Simpsons is much more popular than Futurama, but there isn't a movie...
The tricky bit now is that we all expect a lot of a Futurama movie, and great expectations can lead to great disapointment... I really hope the movie will be as fantastic as the episodes!

A Futurama movie would be great, if they could pull of a 2 hour version of one of the best episodes. I'd guess maybe an ep about Robot Santa, as An Xmas Story is one of the best eps and manages to feature all the characters.

Ya know, it's nice to see that Matt knows we're out here and cares about his shows. I've heard him mention the petition in several articles and how that was something he was really surprised Fox didn't take notice at.

Movies are tricky business. I personally think Futurama has more story background and unused jokes to make a better movie then the Simpsons, but I'd go see 'em both, regardless of quality. I support people who respect their fans -- even if we are a bunch of freaks =)

It's nice to read. You can clearly hear how much Futurama means to Matt. Like in the Simpsons it all happens "in our days", but since Futurama is presented long in the future then they need to create many new gadgets for every ep. And they have succeded with that. It's truly a unique serie and I can't stop to mention how much I hate FOX for how they have treated this show.
It's always tricky making a movie from a tv serie but I think it will work for Futurama (if they gets the chance). When/If this is done I'm sure the viewer rating will be large for it. Long live (?) Futurama and all the respect for Matt Groening!

I saw two promos for the DVD last night on Adult Swim. Looks really cool!!!!!!!
MytomanMar 26th 2003, 00:00
Yes the Show is a big hit in quality and it beats anyother show, but the show was screwed up by fox scheduling. If movie gets gigh ratings and viewers the cant ignore it. Since the petition to Fox dint lead to any result we should make one to cartoon network instead to ask them to buy rights to make more futurama episodes.

I rather see a Futurama movie or possible Life In Hell movie than a Simpsons movie. For those who are not familiar with Life In Hell, it is a comic strip that Matt Groening did years before the Simpsons were created in 1987. It is a very funny comic strip. His original idea was to do his comic strip in animation but he was worried that if it failed, he would have ruined his comic strip so the Simpsons family was created in 15 minutes while waiting for James L. Brooks to discuss how to make the "buffers" in the Tracy Ullman show entertaining thus the Simpsons shorts were created. Anyways since Fox likes to screw us and The Simpsons are just about out of ideas, I would like a Futurama movie to be made and make so much money that Fox will cry and beg for the fans of the show to watch Fox again.

A movie, thats a interesting development. If the movie is really good then Futurama might just have a future. Like someone else said, I would rather see a Futurama movie than a Simpsons movie any day. It's good to see that the petition has been noticed by the creators.

to number #11, we all know what life in hell is!

Futurama has excellent potential for a movie. The makers just need to come up with a strong enough story/concept to justify making a two hour film out of it instead of a normal episode (yes i know they couldn't make it in to an episode. even if they wanted to, but you get the point)
