Groening NCS Cartoonist of the Year

This weekend, the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) crowned Matt Groening its Cartoonist of the Year during their 57th annual Reuben Awards ceremony in San Francisco. The award is voted on by general NCS members and special juries.

Prior winners of "The Cartoonists' Oscar" include cartoon legends such as Charles Schulz (2x for The Peanuts), Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes), Jim Davis (Garfield) and Scott Adams (Dilbert).

I think being Groening, I'd be quite bitter now... Congrats anyway!

Question: Was he nominated for his work on the Simpsons and Futurama, or his Life in Hell strip?
[-mArc-]May 26th 2003, 00:00
The AP report only mentions the Simpsons, but not that he was actually nominated for that. Sadly, the official Reuben site is stuck in 2002.
However, it's unusual to be nominated for animation in the NCS even though this year saw some exepctions.

Cool! Go-go, Matt!
Futurama - RuleZZ!!!!!!!

I read the article, and from what I can tell, they give out Reubens to and FOR the person, not any single work of theirs.

That's kind of glass-is-half-empty, isn't it? Success is never guaranteed in show business. If I were him, I'd be happy for the success I've had. I mean, how many people get to have a top TV show that has entertained and influenced a generation of fans? The closest parallel I can think of is All In The Family. Shabby treatment by Fox given, I think there's a limit to how bitter he could get.

I apologize. I just had to say something...

The bitter part was for getting all the praise in form of awards from critics and the like but just a few days earlier having your heart project ultimately derailed by your business partner.
EricBakerMay 26th 2003, 00:00
Interesting- Matt Groening was nominated last year for the Cartoonist of the Year award for his work on The Simpsons specifically. It appears this year he is nominated in general for all his work (The Simpsons, Life in Hell, and Futurama) since they don't specify what exactly he's being nominated for.

Also, marc, what do you mean by heart project derailed by a business partner? Are you talking about Fox cancelling Futurama?
VigilanteCatMay 26th 2003, 00:00
Congratulations, Matt. I'm sure this is a tad bittersweet.
BlitzMay 26th 2003, 00:00
Well done Matt.....WHY CANT FUTURAMA ROCK ON!!!
SilentXMay 26th 2003, 00:00
Well done, Matt Groening! You kick ass in these dark ages of reality shows and idiot-run Fox.
AnarchistMay 26th 2003, 00:00
Kudos to Matt. He deserves this.
[-mArc-]May 26th 2003, 00:00
#9: Yeah, basically that. Futurama was after all what Groening had put most effort and heart into in the last few years.
TeralMay 26th 2003, 00:00
Congratulations to Matt Groening. If there is one guy who deserve this, he's the one. Way to go Matt!
RorschachMay 26th 2003, 00:00
I'm sure that once again, Matt won't receive a single word of congratulation form Fox for that; bunch of stinkin' moronic bastards.

Anyway, congratulations Matt! I Still beleive that your great work on Futurama is not over yet.
mikeyMay 26th 2003, 00:00
congrats 2 matt mark hav u ever met matt groening
SonofaMonkeyMay 26th 2003, 00:00
I bet those people at FOX are jealous. I hope Matt doesn't give them credit for anything. The only reason FOX is different from any other of those networks is the comic genius of Matt Groening. I had to look at someone else's post for the spelling.
whymeMay 27th 2003, 00:00
Matt is a living Legend, in my mind for the Simpsons, Futurama and Life in Hell, and if he does another show I really hope its as good writen, Drawn, directed as futurama... done on another network

I just saw on msn.com that Futurama has been cancelled. That just sucks. It's the best animated show on tv.

YAY, HURRAY FOR MATT GROENING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Futurama 4ever, everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MrFuzzywuvemsJun 6th 2003, 00:00
You'd think he would have won a few years ago when
both the Simpsons and Futurama were at their peak.
NeoTOMJun 10th 2003, 00:00
Obviously Futurama was cancelled because Guenter hired some of his goons in the year 3000 to make a time machine for him to run Fox 997 years earlier. Stupid monkey. Congrats for the award.
