Can't get enough Futurama

Futurama Season 3 DVD Review

After spending quite some time with the new Futurama Season 3 DVD set, edel and I sat down to write an extensive review. Hope this answers some questions. And before you ask: No, we don't know when the USA is getting this. Wait for Season 2 first or import it (if you can play PAL/region-2). It's really a great set which could warrant getting your DVD player 'fixed'.

Bender Should Not Be Allowed on TV

The 29th of June is not scheduled in a secure way yet. You probably got this from tvtome. Pure speculation. There's a reason why that site may not be quoted on certain boards.

Damn! The table read is audio only!?! I wanted to see the voice actors in action. I don't even know what they look like! (Except for Katey "Married With Children" Sagal and Phil "Pulp Fiction" LaMarr of course).

Oh well, sounds like another great box. Mine should arrive tomorrow I hope. Can't wait! X-)

The UK Futurama Season 3 DVD works on Australian DVD players.

FYI, dvd-rom drives for your PC are very cheap right now ($25 if you look hard), and you have the ability to reset the region up to 5 times on them. I have one in my desktop that is set to region 2 just for stuff bought from amazon uk. Also, many consumer dvd players can be modified to remove region encoding. Apex is usually the cheapest and best bang for the buck. See 'dvdrhelp dot com' for a compatibility list.

To Number #5 how can you reset the region on dvd drives? cause i got a dvd drive in my pc and if i get set the region i would get season 3 right away.

An advantage to living in the UK!

I recently purchased the Norcent DP-300 DVD player from Amazon. Came out to $40 A/R. I was able to make it region-free with a simple remote-sequence.

Of course, I immediately ordered Season 2 and 3 DVDs from Amazon UK! Ohh, my DVD player also plays MPEGs burned to CD, which is great because I can watch the Season 5 episodes I downloaded off the net!

I think this a great option for die-hard Futurama fans living in the US.

To #6:

Look for a utility called DVDGenie. It enables you to set all sort of advanced options for your PC DVD drive, including altering the region as many times as you like.

The boxset is great by the way.
McGradyJun 11th 2003, 00:00
There are 2 layers of DVD protection: hardware and software.

You can only change the region on a DVD drive 5 times. Most drives have this built in inside the drive on a chip. Even if you reinstall Windows you only have 5 times total before it gets permanently locked. However, you can usually patch the DVD drive to be region 0 (allowing all regions to be played) or buy a region 0 DVD drive.

Windows has a built in software checker. DVDGenie changes the software region of Windows to allow different regions to be played. DVDGenie does not change the hardware settings to region 0.

When will season 2 come out in the US
dedvirusJun 11th 2003, 00:00
it looks like all of FOX Sunday on the 29th will be pre-empted by True Lies (must be some special event on).

btw, what's up with people/sites scheduling the episode "Bender Should Not Be Allowed on TV" as the next episode when we really don't know what the next episode is. is that one special?

hey, i bought a multi region player, it's a Malata DVP-520S, here in canada, it hasn't been modded, it is designed to be and it actually came from the factory in multi region mode. so i though i'd give you guys the web site:

http://www.nbtelectronics.com/?KeohiHDTV

it's a pretty good player, the only problem that i've had is that the layout of controls on the remote could have been designed better. but other then that, it's really quite good, i have quite a few R2 dvds (including futurama, of course) and they play perfectly, but i have herd that the PAL/NTSC conversion doesn't look so great on plasma and HD tv, but i don't know for sure, as i can't afford a high end tv. Oh and it's in canadian dollars, so you americans will be getting it for a lower price then advertised on the site. if anyone with an HD tv gets one, tell me how R2 looks in high resolution!

I'm guessing the "bad" episodes are "Lobstertainment", "I Dated a Robot", "Leela of Her Own" and "Pharoah". Well - I just saw all 4 on Cartoon Network over the last two weeks and every one made me laugh even though I've seen them all before.

I know it's been said 100 times, but I think it's always important to say an episode is only really "weak" when compared to other Futuramas.

As far as the DVD set - it sounds great. I'll pick up R1 S2 the day it's released (currently 8/12), but S3 is the one I'm really looking forward to as it contains some of my very favorites (although S4 may overtake it if the last 6 keep this recent 5 star streak going).

Oh well - next spring I'll get this one and next fall all 72 will be mine. Sigh...

Hey, here's something that might delight the people at gotfuturama.com, just thought I'd mention that this site in mentioned in the DVD commentry for 'That's Lobstertainment! I'll quote it for you if you want.
RobboJun 13th 2003, 00:00
Does anyone know where to get this DVD Drive 'cracking' software???
StephenRFletcherJun 14th 2003, 00:00
Sorry to change the subject there, Robbo. I don't know where to get this DVD Drive.

Here's the quote from the commentry I mentioned. It's about this website and about some fans not liking the episode. I disagree with people who think this, I say it's another Good ep.

Patric Verone: Let me point this out. This one (That's Lobstertainment) is roundly considered by the Newsgroup Mavens as the worst episode ever.

David X. Cohen: What?!

Patric Verone: Yes, indeed it is...

Matt Groening: They say that about every episode.

Patric Verone: No No, that's true of 'The Simpsons' but not true of 'Futurama'. This show, in fact, one of the websites I think gotfuturama.com, which rates the shows, rated this one on the scale of 100, I think it got like a 58.

Season Three - Region 2 Box Set is excellent! Worthy of mention too is that for the first time the animated menus are all in proper widescreen! [not the episodes themselves obviously as they were made in 4:3] But widescreen menus is a nice bonus for those of us with 16:9 TVs. Also I love the alien language copyright message.
JenJun 16th 2003, 00:00
I see Ain't No Such Thing as Too Much Amy Wong is also mentioned in the DVD commentaries.

Also, I have been labelled as a nerd for the very first time - for being on this site! :o) Nice to know the writers read these things once in a while.... how weird (and possibly scary) for them it must be!

PS - I know I've obviously missed it said before (not that much of a nerd, then) - how do I decode the two alien languages? I think the first one is noe offered as a font, isn't it? I hate the thought of what I'm missing in that alien copyright stuff... :o)
LaurenceHarrisJun 18th 2003, 00:00
Definately highly enjoyable erruptiousness, if there is such a word, which i believe there isn't so don't quote me on it, and if you do, i have plenty of actors playing lawers who will be able to mimic sewing your argrophobic asses.
But i digress, while episode wise on the whole maybe not quite up to Season 2 it does have some very interesting extras and ultimately purely fabulous episodes, its perhaps the episodes 'That's Lobstertainment' and 'A Leela Of Her Own' that don't cut it, not to say they aren't funny, just not as funny as Futurama can be.
Audio Commentaries are superb, just hearing the guys laugh and joke about while revealing some otherwise unknown tidbits of infomation is a genuinely great thing to hear for anyone who watches the show.
Matt, David, Billy, John, Katey, Tress, the writers directors animators, so on and so on, what you guys have done is superb and the episode 'The Luck Of The Fryfish' i found truly and deeply touching, you guys have inspired me to have a crack at cartooning myself, if you read this, i'd love some help with my ideas, i know you won't, but on the off chance you do, gimme a mail, i'm a strange anxiety ridden reclusive teenager (18) who would deeply love to do the things you do.

Buy it guys, it'll make your life better.
PaulWJun 25th 2003, 00:00
The forced copyright notices really let the set down, there's a high probability I wont buy the fourth series.
LaurenceHarrisJun 25th 2003, 00:00
Paul W - press the menu button on your dvd player to go the (believe it or not) the menu.

Did you know gotfuturama.com is talked about on the DVD 3?
KeithLJul 8th 2003, 00:00
I got the season 3 dvd for Fathers Day and i have to say that i just luv it. I don't believe that there are any 'weak' episodes. If it makes you laugh its good. I live in Northern Ireland( not Ireland, thats a different country)and i was able to crack the code of my dvd player, making it multi-region, after 5 mins on the net. Just out in the make and model of your player into the search engine and you be surprised how many site will tell you how to crack the code. My player was not a one off( i have 4 different makes) and i was able to do it to them all. I am lucky that all the releases have been either near Fathers Day or my Birthday so i haven't actually had to buy any.
SomeGuyIsupposeJul 15th 2003, 00:00
So when's Region 1 getting Season 3 and 4?
AussieFanJul 17th 2003, 00:00
Me Like Futurama. Me therefore like Futurama 3.
