Can't get enough Futurama

First Season 4 DVD details

As a nice sign that the 4ACV DVDs are heading towards Europe at the end of this year / start of next year, the British content rating group published its first ratings for the extras. There will be:
  1. about 14 minutes of deleted scenes
  2. something called "pencil test" (probably a gallery)
  3. 3D models of the PE ship (+mods), Nimbus, Nixon-bot and various others
  4. the animatic for Obsoletely Fabulous
  5. 2 easter eggs (highlight to read): a table read for The Devil's Hands and a Star Trek panel discussion
It's not really clear if we'll see some more being added over time, but the commentaries aren't yet up and we know that all 18 of them have been recorded in addition to one extra one for Emmy nominee "Jurassic Bark", focusing on the writing process. And there might be a small DVD-Data special. Not sure about the last one.

For the envious Americans: The Season 2 DVD set is about to be released (only 17 days now!), so go preoder it at 25% off at amazon.

Sounds fantastic! Just a quick note; a pencil test is what happens before the drawings are scanned and cloured.

All the key frames are drawn, then all the other drawings are added, and played in a computer to see if the animation is good enough - this is a pencil test, so it will be like a better-moving animatic. Once the penicl test is approved then it (in Futuama's case) is scanned into a computer where it is 'inked' and digitally coloured.

Hope that helps!

If you want to make your dvd player play
region 2 / UK dvds goto www.vcdhelp.com then click on dvd hacks which will be on the left hand side of the site. then enter the make of your dvd player eg. sony , alba , bush etc and the site will tell you if your player can become multiregion and give you the hack to make it multi region. hope this helps you get your hand on the futurama dvds a bit quicker.

Sweet I guess. Maybe Fox suits are responible for making us suffer. I don't know. I think it sucks that US gets the sets much later than in other parts of the world. After all, the shows are produced in US but made in Korea so those two countries should get the dvds first. Sorry everyone else but that is just how I feel.

My dvd player is my Playstation 2. The only hacks for it don't seem all that great. You need some strange cable for some, and a mod chip for others, and I don't like either of those options. I guess I will just have to wait for the R1 dvds to hit the US. I am just happy that R1 season 2 is coming out very soon, and hope they don't take too long to release the last two!

On an unrelated note, Futurama comics #14 was released. I bought mine at the local comic store 2 days ago, so it's time to open up the reviewing.

I'm using a program called RemSelec which allows region-free operation of your DVD drive using most player programs. (I can vouch personally that it works with Power DVD). I had a link on the Turanga Pages to the Remote Selector site for quite some time prior to the release of Season 3. If anyone's interested, write me, and I'll see if I can dig it up for you.

As an alternate plan of attack, eBay is usually just crawling with region-free players, many well under $100. I bought one which not only is region-free, but you can specify whether you want the video output to be NTSC (North American standard) or PAL (most everywhere else).

I suggest taking one of these paths to beat The Visionaries at Fox at their own game!

"My dvd player is my Playstation 2. The only hacks for it don't seem all that great. You need some strange cable for some, and a mod chip for others, and I don't like either of those options. "

I don't know if it works with American PS2s, but there's something called DVD Region X available in Europe - it's just a cartridge (plugs into the memory card slot) and a disc, no modchips or cables are required. It doesn't convert from NTSC to PAL or vice versa though, so you'll need a TV with PAL support to watch the Futurama DVDs.

"the animatic for Obsoletely Fabulous"

im just curious as to what that actually means? is it similar to what the did with "Space Pilot 3000" on the Season 1 set?
KazzahdraneJul 27th 2003, 00:00
Yeah it will be the same, a moving pencil drawing without colours or sound effects. Also, the animatics so far have had a few extra lines that were fully animated, and then cut out right before the ep was finished. The don't always use the proper actors for the animatics either (you'll see what I mean on the Season 3 set).
darkliterJul 27th 2003, 00:00
a pencil test is the stage of production, where the first rough pencils are photographed and animated to see if the movements`s flow is allright.

If there actually was a production season 5; chances are Europe would get it on DVD before they even aired all the episodes on the US...
ScrufyJul 27th 2003, 00:00

I dont think that its going to come out on the 1st. If you look on www.amazon.co.uk you will see that the set is not even listed. On top of that I dont even think that the last eps will have finished airing in the UK by then.
