Australian S3 DVD Problems

Multiple people have reported that their Australian Futurama Season 3 DVD set is causing problems with disc 1 and 4. If your discs get stuck after the legal warnings, I recommend that you call the publically listed FOX Home Entertainment customer support line at 1300 369 843. I'm sure they'll offer some remedy once they know it's not just one person having problems.
If this is no option, try getting your money back from your vendor and buy at a different store. Not all batches seem to be affected.

I can't say I've had any problem with any of them, other than the wait (23rd September vs 16th June is more than shocking, it's downright offensive).
CheesenessSep 30th 2003, 14:11
Correction: 2nd of June
StebbySep 30th 2003, 14:58
I'm glad it's getting this much attention. There's nothing more frustrating than waiting months for a DVD, shelling out $75...and then finding half the thing doesn't even work on your DVD player. :(
I'd ring that number too...except for some reason my phone tells me I can't dial 1300 numbers out from here. *sigh*
PetieSep 30th 2003, 15:11
That sucks. Luckily my copy seems fine, however I could only find it at HMV where I had to pay 95 freaken' dollars because I really wanted it to watch over the weekend and no other store had it. Grr. Grrrrr. Of course the next day I found it at an independent store for $72.
RogerTWardSep 30th 2003, 16:42
Can't say i've had any problems with the set here on a Sony DVPNS730. It would be better if posters included what player they use, if they have a problem or not so we can try and determine if it's player specific or not!
yourmommaSep 30th 2003, 17:16
ok, people should post dvd serial numbers, and state (works, doesnt) etc...so that we can id the faulty batch, and thus, help future customers :)

cheers

are these discs being played on an xbox by chance? I had a similar problem playing disc 3 of the region 4 version of season one on any xbox but it played fine on any other DVD player. I purchased the season 3 dvd's on ebay and they were region 2 but all worked fine
DanmOct 1st 2003, 01:30
Had problems with disk 1 and 4 (playing the last episode on those disks) when playing them on my sorta old DVD player. Later I tried them on a PS2 and they worked fine so im just gonna forget it.
WenzOct 1st 2003, 02:58
I waited so freaking long for season 3 to come out and when i got it disc 1 and 4 stuff up on me! aaaarghhhhhhh And what really makes me mad is that the eps that stuffs up on disc 4 is 'Roswell that ends well' NOT HAPPY JAN!
snipeOct 1st 2003, 03:49
I bought mine from the uk through amazon, (and have pre-ordered season 4). I have played it on my playstation and it works fine
JerecOct 1st 2003, 05:09
I've found the following problems.

The Bird Bot of Ice Catraz and Bendless Love skip sometimes. It'll just pause for a second or two, and then continue. It's annoying, but the episodes seem to work fine on my PS2.

The easter eggs don't work at all on my PS2, but they work fine on my parent's DVD player.

Disc 4 originally wouldn't work at all. The PS2 would load it up, but would have a read error when I tried to play a special feature or an episode. My main DVD player refused to load it, but this could've been due to the fact that I watched about 10 episodes in one afternoon, and the player was overheated. Later on, it worked fine.

The only problem that remains is a bit of skipping on the two episodes I mentioned earlier, but since I have more than one player, I can get around it.
FazOct 1st 2003, 07:35
Yeh, I'll have to research further to work out exactly what problems I do and don't have, but I'm pretty sure there were two episodes on disc 1 that just flat out refused to play on my PS2.

If I have to exchange it, or whatever, that's fine. But I'll be mighty PO'd if FOX just say "there must be some sort of incompatibility with your player, sorry".
chumpbenderOct 1st 2003, 09:04
A lot of people seem to be using there ps2 as a DVD player. I used mine for a long time, and had nothing but problems with it. Sometimes in the middle of a dvd it would just start skipping around, or just pause and then get a disk read error. This happened about half the time when I watched a new dvd. I finally broke down and bought a region free player from ebay. I highly recommend it for people having problems with using there ps2.
TimOct 1st 2003, 12:50
Well luckly 4 me and my friends that mine and theirs all work! I was really impressed by this season's episodes and feel sorry 4 those who r having problems with it! Fox u suk!!!
JerecOct 1st 2003, 13:42
After a lot of testing, Bendless Love is the only episode that doesn't work on my PS2, which is fine since it works on my main DVD player and isn't a great episode to start with. I almost freaked when Bird Bot wouldn't work, since that's one of my favourites.
GenderBenderOct 1st 2003, 17:50
Discs 1 and 4 wont work at all on my xbox. The discs will not be recognized. The wierdest part is that when you blow on the discs, not that way, so they fog up, there are spots all over them. Never seen those before but then again, Ive never had to blow on a DVD to try to get the damn thing to work.

Ill ring fox and swap it over. I definately think fox have stuffed up something.
CobraOct 2nd 2003, 03:47
Iv had problems with the 1st disk i think... i thought nothing of it? i was 1/2 way through a eppisode (name dosent come to mind) and my dvd player paused then stopped? is this the same problem. i know it not my dvd player
orangemanOct 2nd 2003, 07:17
I have had problems with my season 3 box set too. Disc 1 will not even load to the menu screen, and i had a problem with disc 4 but that works o.k. now. But disc 1 is stuffed. I have a good toshiba dvd player too so when i call fox to complain they better not blame it. This is the first problem i've had with any of my bought dvd's.
MervOct 2nd 2003, 10:54
Yeah i have had trouble on a toshiba dvd player but not on a maranzs one i have i think i will ring them and see what they offer just incase

i thoght it was just my dvd player getting old or something but if it is a problem its better to have the discs that are good than faluty disks coz they did set me back 80 bucks
GavinOct 2nd 2003, 14:02
I've had two copies of the box set, both were almost exactly the same in what would work and what wouldn't (using an xbox)
First set, disc 1 would not work at all. Disc 4 worked 3 out of about 20 times i tried it, and even then, no special features worked, and there is a brief black spot in all the main menues on all discs... and disc 2 was crappy. Disc 3 seemed to be fine.

Second set, first disc worked once, same story for the rest of the discs.

BoskoOct 2nd 2003, 15:12
Mine are fine, 'cept my dvd player is shitty and doesn't play them too well, has errors and stuff. But that's the players fault.

Good luck to you suckers.
TheDrainpipeOct 2nd 2003, 17:47
Finally got my Season 3 set today. JB Hi Fi (Perth) was supposed to stock 'em on the 24th, but they didn't arrive until 1st October (JB was nice enough to make up for the delay by offering a $10 discount if you paid upfront before they received their stock, so I only paid AUS$70 for it). I took some consolation from the guess that maybe the stock was delayed in response to the tainted discs (recall 'em and replace 'em)...no such luck! Discs 1 and 4 are screwy. I haven't tried watching any episodes, but when I click on the special features, the disc stops and the faulty disc icon thingee appears on screen! None of the deleted scenes from Disc 1 work, and only the still galleries work on Disc 4!

If all else fails, I will ring up the Fox customer support line and bellow "I WILL DESTROY YOU! BWAAAAAAAAAAARRRGHHH!!!!" down the phone. Accompanied by berserk arm-waving gestures.
TrentOct 3rd 2003, 02:41
i've had to buy season 3 three times from different stores. the first one i bought, the special features were stuffed on all disks,i got a refund. The second time i bought Amazon women in the mood and the birdbot of icecatraz didn't work on the first disk and on the fourth disk Roswell that ends well and 30% Iron cheif didn't work, i got another refund. Third time same as the second and i've tried them all on my DVD player and PS2.I've also email Fox but they sent back an email saying SHIT HAPPENS!!!So i'm going to call Fox and tell them to not be assholes and get me one that works. GODDAM FOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MervOct 3rd 2003, 03:59
Just called fox they sugested to take it back and exchange it for a new copie when i informed them that it is not just a one off problem and it seams that all the sets are faulty and if it not going to work in my dvd player then it's there problem she said to wait til they get new stock in.. UHHHHHHHHH FOX finds anther way to SCREW the FUTURAMA fans
orangemanOct 3rd 2003, 07:40
Called fox about the faulty discs and recieved noticeable sighs from the telephone operator. She practically brushed me off saying for me to return it to the store it was purchased from. I said i would but i bet they hear from me again within the next couple of days. Too many people are having the same problems with discs 1 and 4 for them to treat it so casually. Everyone who has had trouble call that 1300 number. Don't let them shy away from their responsibility.
JamesOct 3rd 2003, 15:12
I recently got this series. I am having no problems with them on my PC. However my PS2 doesnt like disk 1 very much.
AlexOct 4th 2003, 04:24
Discs 1+4 didn't work on my Ps2. When i get another copy, if they don't work properly on my Ps2, I'm gonne go nuts!
MattOct 4th 2003, 06:54
Yeah my bro bought them and 1-4 dont work at all. 2-3 play, but then they start to screw up like about half way through. It's really annoying paying $75 for things that don't work. He's going to take them back, get a refund and not buy then again until they have fixed them all up.
[-mArc-]Oct 4th 2003, 07:25
I just don't get why people from Australia are so shy to buy them from the UK. They play just fine on Australian DVD players as they made them both region 2 and 4. You also use PAL, as far as I know. Importing them from amazon costs you about 75 Australian Dollars also and you could have had them for months.
trentOct 4th 2003, 07:43
not many poeple like paying on credit card [-mArc-]
LardArseOct 4th 2003, 07:49
Dammit! Disks 1 and 4 won't play in the Xbox and both of them play up and freeze in my PC's DVD-ROM. I just found out about this today (saturday) and of course, there is no one at Fox to complain to 'til monday.

But they are So-o-o-o gonna know about it on Monday morning! (as soon as I get my velour uniform from the cleaners)
NorehaOct 4th 2003, 16:30
Yup, just bought season 3, discs one and four seem to work fine in my PC DVD-ROM, but does not get past the legal disclaimer on my xbox, nd I just gave my crappy dvd player away because I got the xbox. I took the discs back got another set, same problem, vendor said they have had a few problems with the sets, and would replace them by Monday, by God it had better work this time...might call the hotline anyway just to vent. I enjoy Futurama but I may stay away from FOX DVD sets for a time, hope they fix any problems with season 4 BEFORE releasing them.
JerecOct 5th 2003, 02:26
Um, I was under the impression that they were region 2 only, those europe discs, and that they wouldn't work on my DVD player since it only likes region 4. Unless the product description on Amazon is wrong, then I'm not sure I want to spend $75 to get a DVD set that might not work on my player.
KeithOct 5th 2003, 03:53
Discs 1 & 4 don't work for me either. I've been trying on my gold ol' reliable Toshiba. It definitely seems to be an authoring problem rather than a compatibility issue because the player loads the two "easter eggs" on disc one, but the screen goes all pixilated - ie. badly authored disc. Trying to access the other special features just locks the discs up. Off to JB Hi-Fi to ask if they have had more than one shipment of them...
ElGuapoOct 7th 2003, 03:07
I contacted FOX this morning. They do know there's a problem - it's a bad burn on a batch of disks, but unfortunately they don't have batch numbers so they can't tell you which are good and which aren't. As they don't deal directly with the public, they can't help you.
However, I WAS advised to take it back to the store I bought it from, and to get a refund (NOT to exchange it). FOX are currently creating new disks, so if we wait a couple of weeks the new stock should be okay.
BennOct 8th 2003, 13:05
Pfft...

I got mine from Amazon UK months ago. Not only do they work perfectly (in both my region 4 and multi-region players), I also get superior packaging, all on top of the fact that I've been enjoying them since May.
trentOct 9th 2003, 03:28
sooooooooo ... oooooooooo
TheDrainpipeOct 9th 2003, 05:12
The Fox Lady responded to my call with the general air of "Yeah, we know, everyone's calling us up..." She told me to take it back to the store and exchange it. I went back to JB's with the Box, and the manager didn't know about the problem, but fortunately a couple of the salesgirls did, so they took it back with minimum fuss. They have ordered a replacement set for me that I should get by mid-next week, and they've assured me it'll be one of the good ones. Which is good, as I feared replacing one shoddy set for another shoddy set.

I'm definitely gonna get my Season 4 set from Amazon UK, as I now place more trust in Nixon's Head than I do in Fox Australia. Besides, I was planning to get my Season 4 from the UK anyway as I'm certain it won't be out in Oz until next May or thereabouts...
DANOct 9th 2003, 06:16
Just for the record, I bought my set from KMART in Kalgoorlie WA and my disc 1 and 4 is stuffed after the legal warnings too. Must have been a big batch that was screwed......
orangemanOct 9th 2003, 06:44
I called fox on tuesday and the telephone operator realised there was a problem and told me to send it to them, that they will check it and post out the new fixed batch. Am i the only one who was told to send them back to fox themselves. They obviously do deal directly with the public.
BlueOct 11th 2003, 04:41
I brought my season 3 box set in New Zealand From a New Zealand Internet Company the first time I tried disc 1 it got to the copyright info and then stopped after that it wouldn
UgbugOct 13th 2003, 08:38
I have the same disc 1 and 4 problems, my player is a Philips 718 (I think, I'm at work so I can't confirm). I just called Fox and was advised that they are aware that some people are having a problem on some DVD players with an early batch, as it's only effecting some players they are not recalling them. They suggested I return to JB Hifi (where I bought it) and request they order in a new copy specifically for me, as the batch they have in stock now doesn't have the problem.
thespiceweaselOct 15th 2003, 05:02
I bought my S3 box set on October 11... Disc 1 works OK but haven't tried disc 4 yet... It will be the first thing I do when I get home tonight....
TroyOct 15th 2003, 15:30
It is nice to know that it is not just me that is having problems with the set. I have already been trough a couple of copies from different stores and they all seem to have a similar problem. Anything from not loading the disc at all to not playing an episode or special feature. My first clue that something was wrong was when my player (PS2) spent more than 5 minutes "reading disc". I was starting to think that I was going crazy. I think I'll return my current copy and wait a few weeks for the new batch.
thespiceweaselOct 17th 2003, 14:17
Good news everyone!!! The box set is cool.... I must have been lucky enough to get a new box with all the bugs ironed out...
KevinBakerOct 20th 2003, 14:50
I purchased my S3 boxset the day it was released here. Bought it from K-Mart in Hoppers Crossing, Victoria. I've got the same problems - D1 and D4 won't work in the X-Box at all. I'll be phoning them up tomorrow - thanks for the information guys! I'm hoping I won't have to send it in straight away, still watching some of the other episodes!
orangemanOct 21st 2003, 06:04
I have had mine replaced by target and fox themselves and it still doesn't work on my toshibe dvd or my friends playstation. Three faulty sets!!! It is getting beyond a joke and fast becoming a waste of my time and money (twice i will have had to pay for it to be shipped back to fox).
KevinBakerOct 21st 2003, 08:28
Well, I've just phoned Fox up and they said to take it back to K-Mart where they'll replace it with a new set. I'm off to do it now, will update with how it goes.
KevinBakerOct 21st 2003, 10:32
Well, I've just returned from K-Mart, they exchanged it no problems. The woman hadn't heard about the problems, but believed me, she was very sympathetic about it too (She got affected when the Lord of the Rings had to be recalled). I've stuck in Disk 4, and its loaded up fine, so fingers crossed for Disk 1!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention guys, I'd noticed it didn't work but didn't even think that it'd be such a massive, widespread problem.

Good luck to all in getting theirs fixed!
KevinBakerOct 21st 2003, 10:41
ARRGH! I spoke too soon! I read somewhere that 1 in 20 odd times it'll work, and guess what, that disk 4 I tested is still faulty, and I got the 1 in 20 times when I tested it. Grr :(

Time for another phonecall to Fox methinks.
TheDrainpipeOct 23rd 2003, 05:06
I got a replacement set last week, and in that time I've gone through every episode (yeah, I have no life) and all the special features - thankfully, it looks like everything's in working order. I'm still gonna get my Season 4 set from the UK, though. I've been burned by Fox Australia and the wound runs deep. Plus I can't be arsed waiting half a year to see Season 4 - for one thing, the bloody Rugby World Cup is keeping episodes off Channel 7!!
centralcoastkidOct 25th 2003, 14:51
bought by season 3 set from K-Mart at bateu bay. disk 1 and 4 like every fricken owener of the box set is trucked. disk 1 goes straight into the first episode with out going to the main menu. disk 4 just dont work at all. the cheap shits at fox should make special replacement batch's for us as well as given us season 4 for free for all the trouble it has cuased us.
TroyDec 6th 2003, 12:45
I just thought that you would like to know that I believe that the new batch of Season 3 are slowly being released. I picked up a copy at JB Hi-Fi Chadstone (Victoria). They seem to make their DVDs with the month and year they came into the store. I had seen copies at JBs marked 10/03, but this one was marked 11/03 and it has absolutly no problems.
knowsfordsDec 30th 2003, 22:44
well I just got mine and it definately is of a bad batch... the first and fourth discs won't even load.
slurmsFeb 1st 2004, 04:14
JEEZ!! Lucky Euro and auzzies! I still have to wait 2 freakin months!
adamMar 17th 2004, 11:18
I'll be picking up the Season 3 DVD box set from my local JB tomorrow afternoon since they've slashed the price down to a low $35. :D

I'm hoping I won't have any problems with the discs. If I do I'll be back to let people know they're still being crappy, but the set has been out for about 3 months now so it should have been rectified by now I'd think.
AndrewMar 20th 2004, 12:33
I just bought Season 1 & 3 for $35 each and they work perfectly fine.
reGGieFeb 1st 2005, 02:24
Just spoke to the Fox Customer Service line and they have offered to replace the Box Set for me free of charge.
IvanMay 21st 2006, 14:31
I got the 2005 re-release of the set and it works fine. Someone on the first page of comments noted that one of their discs had spots all over it. My Disc 2 has them, but works fine.
