Can't get enough Futurama

What Makes a Hit a Hit?

Dr Dave notified me about an article on Animation World Magazine called "What Makes a Hit a Hit?". For Futurama fans, page 3 is of special interest as it recaps and details the situation Futurama was in compared to The Simpsons and Family Guy.
Talking about the possible resurrection of the later, Cartoon Network's Mike Lazzo tells us
Family Guy has sold a large number of DVDs for FOX, so there has been interest to a degree in that property. We've been talking for months about that type of thing [a joint effort] with FOX. [...] There hasn't been an equivalent situation with Futurama to date. It did quite well on DVD but didn

What about the new DVD damn it, its out!!!
ScottONov 26th 2003, 15:01
How the hell does this happen? I know one person who watches Family Guy and he didn't even buy the DVD!?!?
JimboNov 26th 2003, 15:13
Wow, a Family Guy revival! They renew the absolute dumbest cartoon in recent memory. That gives me hope for such overlooked classics as Fish Police, Misfits of Science, Manimal, and the XFL!
RorschachNov 26th 2003, 16:08
OK let's see.
1) Both Futurama and Family Guy received a shitty treatment because those incompetent retards at FOX didn't like them. (check)

2) Complaints kept coming from the angry fans, and in Futurama's case even a petition, for a better treatment of their favorite show. But those incompetents bastards did nothing. (check)

3) Both show got cancelled because they were not immediate hits. (check)

4) CN takes the shows and both have a great success. Plus the DVD sales are good too. (check)

5) Family Guy will probably come back because it sold very well. And there may even be a chance for Futurama. Though I'd like to see the figures I order to know how much better it sold over Futurama. I'm a bit skeptical here. (check)

6) KotH, which apparently DID NOT do as good on DVD sales, is still on the air today and has never been mistreated as far as I know. Obviously, it wasn't an immediate hit. (check)

Conclusion: Another article that is again confirming how much FOX SUCKS!!!!!!! How much they don't care about what the viwers want to watch.

I think Futurama should come back, its much better than Family Guy and here in the UK it was just about to get the recognition it deserved.

Why can Fox allow another season of bland Simpsons, when Futurama breathes in fresh direction for cartoons.
KimberlyNov 26th 2003, 19:03
FWIW, Futurama may not be selling as well because it's SO DARN HARD TO FIND! I've looked every time I've been to Worst, er, Best Buy and CompUSA, and even Wally World and I have yet to see Futurama at any of those stores. :-/

BTW: Fox, you suck. Please bring Futurama back so Fox will suck a little less? ;)
OtisPJivefunkNov 26th 2003, 21:37
I can assure you that Futurama is selling increadibly well in Britan, without a doubt! It's easily availble here too, which helps. I have no idea how well Family Guy is selling, but I'm almost certain it's not doing that much better than Futurama, if at all! At least not here anyway. I'd really like to see some genuine reliable figures. But maybe it's just elsewhere that Family uy has sold a lot more. Maybe in the states, because not all the Futurama seasons are out there yet. Which leads us right back to Fox, so it's still their fault!
BrainSluggoNov 26th 2003, 22:15
In a study, Futurama was found to have the "most liberal audience" on TV. A relative of Al Gore worked on the show. Stories dealt with global warming, political corruption, flag-burning, and Nixon was (accurately) portrayed as a scumbag.

FOX is run by Rupert Murdoch, and home to "fair and balanced" FOX "News," Bill "Shut Up!" O'Reilly, and various other right-wing propaganda sources.

That is why KotH is still there, Family Guy is coming back, and Futurama isn't. FOX only tolerates "liberal" if it means "titty."
NickNov 26th 2003, 22:45
Fox executives are a bunch of retards. How can they even begin to compare the dvd sales of the two shows when the last two seasons of Futurama still haven't been released in the states because of those retards themselves?
Un-fecking-believable.
fryfanNov 26th 2003, 22:59
let be known that fryfan is a big fan of Futurama, but you can't blame Family Guy. Blame FOX. Futurama was and still is one of the best shows ever, but I also like family Guy for its humor. I'm glad Family Guy may see a revival, but if Futurama was getting a revival, I'd be 1000 times happier.

This has been a fryfan comment
blahnessNov 26th 2003, 23:57
i would say that people buying the dvds from the UK. would shorten the US sales for futurama

I'm a conservative and I *heart* Futurama, and I think Tricky Dick was a crook and a scoundrel (although I'm too young to have witnessed his speeces - I was one or two years old at the time of that scandal). I found Futurama to be fairly well-balanced in its satire and parody. They just took jokes and went with them!
KimberlyNov 27th 2003, 02:27
Also, FWIW, I find Family Guy to be far more liberal and far more offensive (and yet it's enjoyable to watch because it's witty).

I have a very low opinion of Murdoch. "Gee, let's play musical timeslots out of revenge because Groening won't sell the rights to his creation outright, and then we'll blame Groening when ratings stink." Mr. Murdoch, we see through your games and we want our show back. You've already eaten crow by admitting you screwed up with Family Guy, now regain some respect by bringing Futurama back. Whether you own a tiny slice or the whole pie, what does it matter as long as it produces SOME profit? Who knows, if you give it a good AND CONSISTENT timeslot, perhaps it will even surpass the popularity that the Simpsons has enjoyed for all of these years?
RoverNov 27th 2003, 04:41
Well, in my case, we just won a battle. Hooray! Now let's see if the rest of us can win the whole war. "We shall overcooome!"
BeamerNov 27th 2003, 11:06
Also, Rorschach - you mentioned that Futurama had a petition to bring it back. Family Guy did too. In fact, that's why the show got revived for a third season - the fan response. Not to mention the fact that Family Guy's a cheaper show to make.

Still, I agree: We should all buy as many DVD's as possible! Also, if you have any friends that are even remotely into Futurama - try to get them obsessed with the show (War Is The H-Word is the episode that triggered my personal obsession) and hopefully THEY'LL buy the DVD's too. The bigger the show's success-after-cancellation is, the bigger the chance of a revival is (although it will always be a slim chance anyway). And if not, we can always be proud that when Futurama was forced to walk out Fox's door - it was Fox who got hit on the ass by the door.
KazzahdraneNov 27th 2003, 13:11
It's important to remember that there are still 2 DVD box sets to be released in the US. That's two more times we'll see articles about the show and the episodes in magazines (well, not *me*, but Americans will) and more noise being made about the show's death.

That's the best time to make a racket, when the next 2 box sets are released.
johanleyNov 27th 2003, 13:26
It was the middle segment of Anthology of Interest II that triggered my obsession and A Flight to Remember that cemented it. I've only seen a couple Family Guys, fairly funny, but not my type of humor. Still, lets get em both back to FOX, and fans across the board will be pleased.
jmgZZNov 27th 2003, 19:05
you know I would buy some-more Futurama DVD's if FOX released them all already!!

Family Guy already has the entire series out, hurry the hell up with Futurama FOX!!!
EzyRyderNov 27th 2003, 23:02
Well I for one have bought all Futurama DVD's and Family Guy. The reason Futurama sold more poorly than Family guy was the
SilentGregNov 28th 2003, 01:13
If all of Futurama seasons dvds are already out in the U.K., then what is the freakin' hold-up for the R1 release? It's not like the commentaries haven't been or are in the process of being recorded like The Simpsons Season 4 dvd. If the hold-up is because of creating the new menus on the R1 dvds, then they should get finish with it real soon so we can all enjoy the new dvds.
JenNov 28th 2003, 01:24
Futurama didn't appeal to women at all?! Scum-sucking weasels! It did too! I thoroughly love it to bits and I think Family Guy, King of The Hill, and even The Simpsons pale by comparison. I know loads of folk disagree, so I'll probably get razzed for that! :o)

Bit unfair to make such judgements when they never gave it a proper chance - where do they get their figures from? Rats.
LeelasTwinNov 28th 2003, 04:12
Well, I'm a 10-YEAR-OLD FEMALE, @!#? it!
JitterroNov 29th 2003, 04:46
I'm a female who'll be 15 next week! A good deal of my female friends love Futurama too!
...Yeah, where the crap do they get those figures from?
And if they'd just release the last two DVD sets in the US already...
StinkyNov 29th 2003, 09:08
I can't believe this... here in Belgium we don''t even know Family Guy...
SeanNov 29th 2003, 20:50
I have never met a person who openly amits to liking KotH and have only hear people insolting it.

RoverNov 29th 2003, 21:12
Yeah, I'm a girl who'll be fourteen in January. I think they couldn've left that part out.
TheHumanTornadoDec 2nd 2003, 19:01
"yea im sure they have a lot of 18-34 and not 12-17 watching"

At 11PM and 2AM ET, it probably *is* mostly 18-34 YOs watching...
TheHumanTornadoDec 2nd 2003, 19:05
I'm still amazed that Family Guy got on the air in the first place. A cartoon about fat, loutish moron and his equally dysfunctional family. Where have we seen that formula before (and done much better, I might add)?
johnDec 2nd 2003, 20:28
I am glad the family guy is coming back as its very funny and truly original....I hope that provides a glimmer of hope for our beloved series futurama but i would not count on that..The costs to make the series far exceed the profits fox can squeeze out of it....I would complain about the way fox promoted futurama when it was on but they had no promotion for it.....Fox would rather put on stupid sh1t like "banzai" or those 2 stupid sluts putting their hands up cows asses on a farm in arkansas...outta boy fox you assholes your doin it!
WesleyDec 3rd 2003, 10:01
Another big reason the Family Guy sets sold so much better is the fact that they were actually advertised.
sadfuturefanDec 23rd 2003, 02:35
I'll bet fox has the Region 1 dvd's released so much later than the other regions so it looks like the sales are worse. I think FOX has a serious grudge against Futurama.
