Can't get enough Futurama
In Color

A sad sad day for human kind

After googling, I came across this article. As some of you might remember, 3001 is a movie that features some guy waking up in the year 3001(sound familiar?)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Twentieth Century Fox is rocketing Luke Wilson into the next millennium.

The 32-year-old actor will star in Mike Judge's comedy "3001," as a man who wakes from sleep only to find out 1,000 years has passed.

Although this project sounds similar to Fox's defunct cartoon "Futurama," Fox's comedy featured a spacey delivery boy lost in a technologically advanced future whereas "3001" sets up Joe Bowers (Wilson) as the most intelligent person alive now that civilization is dumbed-down, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
shooting is scheduled to start in mid-April and no futurama movie in sight :/

That really steps on hopes of a Fox revival of Futurama. However, at the same time boosts the potential of Fox giving Cartoon-Network full production rights. it doesn't hurt to be optamistic...
NickJan 31st 2004, 09:55
so basically. They cancel our favorite show. And just to add insult to injury steal the entire idea and make a movie out of it.....
KazzahdraneJan 31st 2004, 10:21
This movie might be funny, and it sounds like it doesn't steal as much from Futurama as we'd once worried.

Also, looks like it will be a flat out comedy, probably with a stereotypical villian and a love interest, so nowhere near Futurama's depth :P
JonJan 31st 2004, 11:49
Luke Willson? e I'm sure he's a good guy, but I don't like his movies.

What is Mike Judge thinking? God.
GreggJan 31st 2004, 12:00
#2 bang on the mark.

Fox are really taking the piss by doing this?

They'll ask the Futurama actors to be guest stars next
OtisPJivefunkJan 31st 2004, 12:15
Those bastards...
DOOOOOMMMEEEDDJan 31st 2004, 12:38
Mike Judge is a wanker. Screw the movie, use the money to bring Futurama back.

Why oh why did Matt even go to FOX to pitch the idea of Futurama?
MacPhistoJan 31st 2004, 14:19
Adding insult to injury fox. I love the fact it revolves around society being dumbed down, kinda what fox attempts to do by cancelling witty and intelligent shows in favour of Worlds Blankiest Blank.
MouseOnVenusJan 31st 2004, 15:30
...such as World's Laziest Idea?
johanleyJan 31st 2004, 15:50
.........

Perhaps Groening and Cohen can file a lawsuit for plagarism?
MouseOnVenusJan 31st 2004, 16:16
I think they've made it legally distinguishable enough with the "intelligent man in dumbed down society idea". Curse them!
RassleJan 31st 2004, 17:41
As opposed to a dumbed down man in a (relatively) intelligent society?
johanleyJan 31st 2004, 19:06
It's similar enough to "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid!" There's their lawsuit!
BNLbumJan 31st 2004, 19:18
The "waking up after being frozen for X ammount of years" is kind of a science fiction cliche. Besides, after the first couple of episodes, Fry's suspended animation only came into play in episodes like "The Why of Fry" and "Jurassic Bark", and we can be sure that this movie won't be similar to episodes like that. Still, screw Fox anyway.
FRinGesJan 31st 2004, 20:13
whats good about frys dumbness, is that it always works out in the end.
futuramaMADJan 31st 2004, 20:34
Hey, Even though They have stole the idea, It might be a good film
luvnpeeseJan 31st 2004, 22:21
"Hey, Even though They have stole the idea, It might be a good film"

You are TOO generous.
AndieJan 31st 2004, 22:25
It's just that they are spending money on a movie that could be a flop... while for futurama they already have a established audience, and I'm sure a great movie could be made around the futurama concept... oh well!
HyPnOtOaDJan 31st 2004, 22:44
why not just call the movie " modified version of futurama" as apposed to 3001.....

incedentally i'm working on another futurama fan site called "everyone loves hypnotoad" and i'll gladly link cgef to it if they would link hypnototad to theirs, and the adress is

p.s: it's not finished yet but most of the stuff is up

Jimi-FuraiJan 31st 2004, 23:19
That's really ripoff galore! Doesn't no one got no mo' self respecy no mo'?
RorschachFeb 1st 2004, 01:18
Heh. Everything those retards at Fox do these days is shocking but never surprising. It just proves that creativity, originality and coming up with their own ideas is something totally out of their league. After all, they did make a "contest" to have anybody sending them ideas for a new cartoon. What a bunch of losers.
johanleyFeb 1st 2004, 03:46
Still, even if it is a bit *ahem* similar, it will probably be a great movie. I'd still rather see a huge 100 million budget live action Futurama movie. Think of the set design, big names playing the characters, etc. Like Batmans 3 and 4, except, you know, good.

*fantasizes*
AndieFeb 1st 2004, 12:22
We all still cherish hope for a futurama movie one day being released ;)
MJacksonFeb 1st 2004, 12:48
It could actually work to Futurama's advantage. When every movie magazine and website writes about 3001 as an upcoming project, you can be almost certian that they will mention the blatant similarity to Futurama. I bet most people will side with Futurama.
DOOOOMMMEEEDDDstillFeb 1st 2004, 13:10
I think:

a) Groening should sue Judge.
b) We should boycott this crappy film and everything else Judge has doomed which I believe also means that incredible boring outdated King of the Hill show.
c) Bring back Futurama.

Also if the film sucks, whats that going to do to Futurama?
ClaviusFeb 1st 2004, 16:20
Why in the hell does Fox give so much time and attention to lowbrow crap like King of the Hill while two of the funniest shows they ever had (Futurama, Family Guy) consistantly got the shaft?
We'd be lucky if Futurama and Family Guy was aired in the same time slot each week or not pre-empted for football, while Fox goes out of their way to make sure they air their requisite 4 back-to-back episodes of KotH a week. ! What the hell is up with that? Who exactly is Mike Judge blowing over at Fox?
PlastercastFeb 1st 2004, 17:58
i used to really like beavis and butthead, and i admired mike judge for it... what what bunch of credulous whores the FOX network are! FUTURAMA is my all-time favorite cartoon (that and 'family guy'), and im utterly dissapointed that there going to make a suck-ass rip-van-winkle show when there could be more FUTURAMA!.. but... a few episodes in season 4 sucked hard - specifically all the ones about Fry trying to pull Leyla. KING OF THE KING BLOWS HUGE MONKEY COCK!
MouseOnVenusFeb 1st 2004, 19:01
MJackson, I wouldn't count on it. It wouldn't surprise me if a large portion of the media sided with Fox on this one and conveniently erased all memory of Futurama in the no doubt numerous column inches that will be devoted to 3001. Fox can be very, VERY persuasive.
JeremyFeinFeb 1st 2004, 21:48
So Mike Judge........It's bad enough your Show did Better in the ratings than Futurama you decide to make a Futurama Wanna Be, Judge I boycott your Beavis and ButtHead DVD's your show King of the Hill is Unfunny..........man does it ever suck, and I hope the film 3001 Bombs......In fact I hope that King does get cancelled and you never find work after this. Wow I mean how orginal of you make a film out of a recentally cancelled TV show and I wouldn't even Pick up my Dogs Droppings with your King of the Hill Scripts.
RavenXFeb 1st 2004, 22:12
Well, looks like fox just proved how gay it is. Neway, i really hope CN gets the rights to futurama, its a good possibility, the hopes for a movie though are looking more grim... o well, somthing should happen soon now that this movie is coming out
RoverFeb 2nd 2004, 00:07
I hate Luke Wilson, I think he's a horrible actor. They could have at least found someone relatively good for a rip off.
JamesFeb 2nd 2004, 00:08
Does anyone know if CN are contemplating the idea of taking on Futurama?
ErdrikFeb 2nd 2004, 00:31
Boycott Fox! Down with the Evil Overlords!!

... damn, I hate Fox. At the same time tho, We should stop hoping something should happen, and MAKE something happen. And forget about online petitions, they don't work. I say talk to a lawer(not to sue, but just for advise on what to do) or send in a mass of snail mail to BIG NAME news papers condemning the movie and the treatment of the show. Stop sitting on your a$$es, and DO something damnnit!!
ErdrikFeb 2nd 2004, 00:34
And I mean American Newspapers. Sending mail to Non-USA media componies will probly be ineffective. You can get the mail addresses off the net, just do a little searching. ...
JerryFeb 2nd 2004, 01:29
While I'm no fan of B&B or KOTH; I loved Office Space, so perhaps this movie will be ok. Yeah, it does sound a bit too similar to Futurama, but I think we should give it a shot before we get angry about it.
johanleyFeb 2nd 2004, 05:30
The only thing that gets me real mad about this is that I can picture the FOX executives greenlighting this.

Fox Executive 1: Hmm. Not a bad idea, what do you think?
Fox Executive 2: Wait a minute. It sounds a bit similar to that show we just cancelled. What was it called? Futurmania?
Fox Executive 1: Yeah, I think so. Oh well, that was a piece of crap. Who's going to care about it?
Fox Executive 2: True. Mr. Judge, sold! How much do you need...
ElZilchoFeb 2nd 2004, 13:43
Is this going to be a made-for-tv movie? Made-for-tv movies stink and I can't think of one that was worth watching the first time.
StarmanYotolyFeb 2nd 2004, 15:15
Perhaps I don't speak for everyone, but really... I had long since grown to dislike FOX for number of non-Futurama related reasons, though with Futurama, it was like icing on the cake. This is like the fricking candles blazing on fire and sending sparks into the crowd of eagerly awating children in flammable party hats unaware that they're DAY OF GLORY IS ABOUT TO BECOME AN INFERNO OF ETERNAL PAIN AND SUFFERING!!!!! You, Fox, YOU are the flames that lick the flesh from their horrified little faces! You, Fox, YOU are the reason that the resultant cake companies worldwide will have to take out extra insurance.
I'm sorry if my analogy got a bit stretched, there, but I just feel like that had to be said. The buggers.
StarmanYotolyFeb 2nd 2004, 15:22
...and I also apologize for my misuse of the proper 'their', 'they're', and 'there' in my posting.
IbogaFeb 2nd 2004, 16:46
Personally - i could care less what fox does and what Judge makes - but its such a stupid idea. Why would you make a movie based on a TV show that got canceled. I would much rather see new episodes of the show i love them a rip off version made by someone who created the dumbest show ever (King of the hill).
SomeguywithanopinionFeb 2nd 2004, 17:41
fox should treat groening like a king i mean without simpsons fox would have went under a very long time ago
Nibbler99Feb 2nd 2004, 19:21

SaddenedFeb 2nd 2004, 19:53
Too bad Spencer Tracy couldn't have been in Futurama - then Steve Martin could do ANOTHER horrible re-make - let's face it folks creativity is in short supply these "reality-TV" days. Not much hope - watch CN - get on with our lives.
FreddieBFeb 3rd 2004, 01:03
Actually, I think the story basis of 3001 is more of a rip-off of the 1951 CW Kornbluth story, The Marching Morons, which depicts someone waking in the future to find the world is incredibly dumbed down. (Read the story, it's great!) I loved Office Space and King of the Hill and look forward to interest to what Judge'll do with this.

I really don't think he's stealing ideas from Futurama (and I say this as someone totally devoted to Futurama) -- Futurama stands on its own and will be recognized as such. No need to tear down Judge to build up Futurama.
t0mFeb 3rd 2004, 02:38
To #37 What is B&B? I am just asking because I am curious
PCCFredFeb 3rd 2004, 03:21
Mike Judge has to be the craftiest man in Hollywood. Not only has he ripped off the Simpsons and become the darling of FOX because of it, but now he's managed to pull the same trick with Futurama!

Mr. Judge, I applaud you and your inability to devise an original show in over a decade. May you find many teenage boys whacking off in your toolshed.
fryfanSpyOramaFeb 3rd 2004, 08:39
Yeah Fryfan is back after some computer problems. However, I'm sad to learn that there is still no plans for a Futurama movie. I just hope this movie doesn't rip-off Futurama too much.

What that hell makes fox think that this guy is gonna be able 2 make a movie ripped off a show Matt Groeing the coolest animator, right befroe the guy who made family guy which i mite add you should watch, ever made that just got cancelled? that is SUCH crap, i mean use the $$$$$$$ to bring back Futurama. Damn........

Fox, you really suck! Bring back Futurama!
RobbRobertsFeb 4th 2004, 17:57
Let them make the movie, and I hope it makes lots of money! Maybe then, Matt and Company can go to the powers that be and say: Look our idea made money, now will you let us make our "Futurama Movie". All Of us, lets hope the Luke Wilson movie makes it big, it just might be a turn-around for Futurama.

How can Fox violate their own copyrights, or copyrights they've licensed? I'm confused! ;)
Blackadder11Feb 11th 2004, 05:04
Well, FOX does own the rights, but they are really screwing Matt, and all the other people who worked to bring us Futurama by doing this.
TedFeb 11th 2004, 23:27
Folks, there may be an issue with the Futurama movie that no one has either thought of or expected.

There is a reported Simpson's movie in the works. How's that for screwing the Futurama fans?

I'm about 33/66 love/hate with Judge's stuff. I loved Beavis and Butt-head, but hate KotH and hated Office Space (though, working in an office, to quote Dr. John, "I can so relate"). Beavis and Butt-head was genius at the time. Granted, that was 12 years ago, I was in the target audience for it, and I had friends that WERE Beavis and/or Butt-head. That doesn't mean that it wasn't funny.
BuzzFeb 16th 2004, 04:02
Fox treated the show like a doormat, keeping it down by the NFL and "King of the Hill", I hate KotH too and "Family Guy" died the same way "Futurama" did. Both of those shows are on Cartoon Network and the ratings for "Adult Swim" flew. As a superstitious Chicago fan, I say, "Fox will never have another successful show (successful meaning more than 3 seasons) until "Futurama" gets the respect it deserves."
