I don't care if I lost, it is pretty cool having it on the site anyway, also I can read other pretty funny comics.
chumpbenderFeb 17th 2004, 02:20
Congrats Jordan Ratzlaff! That was a very good comic, lots of laughs, and a great story. It was good enough to be a backup story in an issue of Futurama comics. In fact, that
t0mFeb 17th 2004, 03:06
Now I know I am getting off subject but I just saw a commercial and realized that Billy west (voice of Fry) also is the voice of the bee on the Honey Nut Cheerios commercials!
t0mFeb 17th 2004, 03:28
They should have more contests like this! Even if you DON'T get anything! this was actually pretty fun!
RassleFeb 17th 2004, 03:44
#3: He's also the voice of the red M&M and the voice of Stimpy
youwhaFeb 17th 2004, 03:51
only one of the winners was funny, the decisions seemed to be made on artwork.
ThomasFeb 17th 2004, 04:36
I concur, the winner was truly deserving of first place while the 2nd place it seemed (nearly) anyone could be picked for it. Especially that black and white one, truly undeserving of second place, semi-good artwork but simplistic and flat idea.
youwhaFeb 17th 2004, 05:16
the winner was a quality comic but i feel the entries that can get a funny joke across in only a few frames deserve the win.
yoyoyoFeb 17th 2004, 05:39
I demand a recount. What a travesty. While I agree that the 1st place dude deserved to win, it's only because it looks like he worked harder than everybody else. The winner should have been that abstract looking one. The rest are junk with few chuckles. I would also like to know if screenshot comics were discriminated against. You made a note of them on the comic. Anyway, thanks for the contest.

P.S. That black and white one in 2nd? Where was the joke?
yeahFeb 17th 2004, 05:43
"The important part: It has to be funny."

quoted from the rules.
whats funny about that black and white one?
ThomasJKruseFeb 17th 2004, 06:03
Well that was fun! i think every one who won was as well deserving to win as anybody else who participated, i just want to know one thing.......................... did i come close :P
[-mArc-]Feb 17th 2004, 06:20
The people who invest lots into the art part tend to also think about the joke some to make their work time worth it. Also, good visuals can actually make something more fun to read. That's why there is some correlation. But no one was kicked out for having less good art as long as it wasn't obvious that someone placed 0 effort on that. Comic size was not a matter as long as it had 3 panels, so everyone was free to pick as many panels as he/she needed to get the story/joke accross. Screenshot using entries did get a penalty since it was a comic *drawing* contest.

I didn't take part in the judging myself, but I think the black and white one simply made points with the angrydome. All three jurors kept it in the winner mix right to the end. If it made the jurors laugh, it counts. As I said, it was tough for them to single them down.

In anycase, there will always be disagreement on juried awards since tastes are different. We'd like to have more contests in the future though, so don't ruin it ;)
yoyoyoFeb 17th 2004, 06:26
Sorry. It was fun.
trentFeb 17th 2004, 06:53
hey australians season 4 is in stores such as myer, hmv, target and sanity so go down and get one if got mine.
JonFeb 17th 2004, 08:03
I personally loved otis'. I think it deserved what it got. All 4 deserved what they got. there were a few I would had liked to see win, but in my opinion, this was the top 4. and thats who won.
WezzoFeb 17th 2004, 08:34
Just.. wow. Congratulations to every single one of you - you all deserved it. The top 4 were simply goddamn amazing and have some real great talent, and pretty much everyone there could have made the top 4. Well done to all of you- they really are excellent.
fryfanFeb 17th 2004, 08:36
Will you guys ever reward fans for fanfics? I wish I entered this contest, but I can't draw. However, when I comes to fanfics, I think I might have a shot. I believe CGEF should have a contest for best fanfic. Fanfic writers should each submit one of their best work and be rewarded just as well. Kryten, Allen, Officer 1BDI and many others would be top contenders. I'd be willing to submit a fanfic of my choice. Basically, I speaking for others who weren't good enough to draw, but can write good stories.

I THINK WE FANFIC WRITERS SHOULD GET AN EQUAL SHOT.
fryfanFeb 17th 2004, 08:46
I just added to also state, that I don't mind if I entered and lost, but proving that we fanfic writers are good by entering a fanfic contest is good enough for me. SO PLEASE TAKE THIS FANFIC CONTEST INTO CONSIDERATION.
KazzahdraneFeb 17th 2004, 08:49
I thought the winning comic was amazing, really good artwork and Zapp dialogue down to a tea!

And I liked the b&w one, it was different, and having the missle cross frames was a nice touch.
[-mArc-]Feb 17th 2004, 08:54
I can't see a fan fic contest to work out here. We simply don't have the resources (time) to read through 20 to 50 fan fics and remember them all for judging...

The next contest will probably a trivia one (US only, sorry).
fryfanFeb 17th 2004, 09:10
maybe for you had a few rules, like don't make the fanfic too long and that one fanfic per writer. There are a handful of writers out there. Kryten, Allen, Missy, Rye Guy have written some good stories and it would give more people a chance to read them.

If a fanfic contest is too much, how about a Futurama Song Parody Contest? They would be shorter and faster to read, but I'm still in favor of a fanfic contest. CGEF is the best Futurama website out there, if you guys can't have a fanfic contest, than I don't see any other website having one.

you should judge based on humor, creativity and staying in character from the show.
ChrisWilsonFeb 17th 2004, 12:40
I reckon having a fan fiction contest would be awesome. It could have rules like this:

a) There is a certain minimum and maximum in how much you can write. Preferably it'd be the size of one 22 minute episode of Futurama.

b) The contest is judged on the quality, how good the story is AND the humour. No offence to anyone but if I see another story about Leela and Fry getting married I will barf!

c) No exploding babies, of cause! :P

d) Some restrictions on content like no nudity, the swearing can only go as far as you'd see on an uncut Futurama episode.

e) Have fun.

I think having a fan fiction contest would be a fantastic, incredible, marvellous idea.
OtisPJivefunkFeb 17th 2004, 12:46
The winning comic is absolutely amazing; it kept me gripped the whole way through, and was extremely funny and well written. It
WezzoFeb 17th 2004, 13:46
Marc - how come US only..?

Fryfan - a fanfic contest would be good, but remember - the owners don't have hours and hours a day spare :). A song parody contest would be better - and sounds like a really good idea!
t0mFeb 17th 2004, 14:22
Wezzo, they will probably do that because the prize will be from the U.S. or something like that. They made an exception for this contest because they never thought of this.

P.S. This was REALLY fun! If you could have another contest (whatever kind) It would be AWESOME!
someoneFeb 17th 2004, 14:43
seems you didn't get mine... which is probably a good thing, as it sucked

all the entries rocked
fryFeb 17th 2004, 15:07
to bad we dident get to vote
BofrFeb 17th 2004, 15:48
WoWy,
yeah the winning comics really rock,
i think i print them out and put the best ones
of the contest to my original Futurama Collection,
so i know that my comic had no chance against this
comics, but can you tell me what you think about it?

and i hope there will be a new contest soon, beacause i allready started to draw in school again for my next comic.

see ya
Bofr@
fryfanFeb 17th 2004, 16:56
wezzo- thank for saying my idea is a good one.
rezerFeb 17th 2004, 17:33
Wow great entry's. I never expected the quality to be this high. The winner was short of time to finish all the frames I guess, but the current version allready blew me away. Also the b/w winner with the angrydome was great. I really liked the diversity of styles shown.
JerryLanerFeb 17th 2004, 17:52
"US only" would really suck, since this was one of the coolest contests i have seen - although i didn't win ;)
WezzoFeb 17th 2004, 18:36
fryfan - No problem :) On the downside of that idea though.. you'd probably win outright before any judging began as your ideas are so good ;)
fryfanFeb 17th 2004, 21:34
It terms of coming up with great ideas...maybe. But writers like Kryten or Allen would probably have better shots.
futuramaMADFeb 17th 2004, 21:55
That guy who won had connections with someone who knows someone that has a brother who knows a guy that works for BONGO comics. Trust me on this one!
P.S mine wasnt there I got a message saying undelivered mail this morning! Can I send in it for people to read anyway?
ChrisDFeb 17th 2004, 22:00
Otis: I think the reason people didn't like your comic is because they didn't catch the "angry dome" joke. That's why people asked, "Where was the joke?" I thought your comic was probably the funniest (or at least top 3) on there.

1st place had beautiful illustrations, and he really captures the spirit of the characters, but I just didn't find it funny. I felt that way about a lot of the other comics too. I think the FOX-bashing is just too overdone (though I thought that line in Ryan's comic about the comic strip being pre-empted by football was great).

Any chance of another comic contest anytime soon? I was working on one of my own, but got distracted with school and my job, so I forgot to finish it up and send it in on time.
yeahFeb 18th 2004, 04:41
yeah i definitely didnt catch the angry dome joke, it is pretty funny after realizing that...sorry for ragging on your comic.
trentFeb 18th 2004, 07:20
who gives a crap
fryfanFeb 18th 2004, 07:39
just so you know, Kryten at PEEL says he supports my fanfic contest idea.
ChrisWilsonFeb 18th 2004, 15:04
Hey Otis, I guess your jokes are too intelligent for common people to get... Just like the show's jokes!
JadamsFeb 18th 2004, 17:21
Wow Jordan that was spot on. You haven't said anything about it...speak up!
How do you know about what you said, "Futurama mad"?
How come the next comp will be US only? Will there be any more for Britain and Australia?
I've been reading this talk about a Fanfic contest. Might seem a bit thick, but what's that??
Good work guys, they were all lots of fun to read ;-)
yoyoyoFeb 19th 2004, 05:55
Oh I got it. Me and my common brain. Sorry I'm not an astrophysisist like you but I just didn't think it was funny. It did have really good artwork though.
FRinGesFeb 19th 2004, 07:20
hey i got a Quest for # 12 aka second place. my Q is i dont get it? none of my bodys do either
fryfanFeb 19th 2004, 07:56
What I was going to say, before I was rudely distracted, I love the Zapp Comic. It was in character and deserved to win. I tip my hat to the artist.
KJ--]Feb 19th 2004, 12:52
Yes, the b&w one does have a certain charm to it. Simple ideas are always the best. [Of course I may be just saying this in an attempt to make it look like I got the joke, when in fact i'm too stupid to really understand anything... But I like pretending i'm smart!!]
;]
Congrats to the winners...
But don't you think it would have been funny if Fry read off the "comeback-o-matic" -- "No you're not!"
;]
MikeyFeb 19th 2004, 18:38
are you going to have another comic contest and can you put different prizes in the prize pool like futurama collectables thanks mikey
t0mFeb 19th 2004, 23:16
Or comics
[-mArc-]Feb 21st 2004, 12:36
The next comic contest or other creative contest will have to wait some. We don't have unlimited prize money and time resources either ;)
Having other things as prizes is a slight problem since they're hard to assure. The DVDs and the game is about all that's restocked all the time at most outlets now.
ZombieJesusFeb 21st 2004, 13:59
Why isn't my entry on the page? It's a conceptual minimalist three panel MS Paint job.
Was it because of the nudity? Was it because I disqualified for some reason?
athena1999Feb 22nd 2004, 02:57
The one about the slideshow was effing hilarious! That showed talent when it came to writing jokes. And about the first place one-- it deserved to win because not only it was hilarious, but also... ZAPP RULES!!!! All I'm saying is, next time there's a comic contest, I'm definitely entering. It seems like fun!
LeighanneMFeb 24th 2004, 16:19
Fun contest! Some of the comics that really made me laugh were the ones done by J. Waters, Mike Mueller, Ryan Yoo, Jacob Stock, Veetee, and Ryan DiGiorgi. J.P. Mackey's and Randy Koreman's were very clever, and there's something about the "internal examination" of Nibbler (by Paradox) and the cute king lobster (by Matthew
Jacques) that I really dig.

And of course Jordan Ratzlaff's... wow! Awesome. Especially Zapp's new look after 12 seconds of serious thinking. (*Sniff* It's the same thing my dear old granddad was wearing on the day they kicked him out of the House of Pancakes and into the House of Representatives. Oh, I miss you, you damn kinky GRAMPIEEEEEEeeeee.......!)

Anyway. Big thanks to athena1999. And Jon, edel, and Andie! And Wezzo in comment #16. You're all the bee's knees, the cat's meow, and the mole cricket's vestigial ovipositor. Seeya!
jacobstockFeb 25th 2004, 02:45
hey thanks, i cant belive someone actually liked my comic. i think everyone who won deserved it. you can tell that they all put tons of time and thought into their comic.
