Groening on Adult Swim & Simpsons

Matt Groening will make a rare television appearance on Adult Swim (Cartoon Network) when he introduces his favorite episode of Futurama each night at 11 p.m. (ET, PT) during a weeklong event Sunday, May 23-Thurday, May 27. In addition, USA Today reports that Groening will have a guest appearance in one of the upcoming seasons of his other show, The Simpsons. He'll be introduced as the famous inventor of Futurama signing Bender dolls on a Springfield comic convention.

Introducing him as the inventor of the Simpsons on the Simpsons would not have worked, of course. Now the continuity geeks have to work out how he can be on the Simpsons as the Futurama inventor when the Simpsons is a TV show in the Futurama universe. Whaaa!

UPDATE: It will be on April the 18th!

Maybe the R1 DVD set of Season 4 might include any of these introductions that are for 4ACV eps?

First off it sucks for all of us who either not in the US or not stealing US satilite signals, knowing the phenominom we're missing.

Secondly, (in reply to Jon) while sighting of Mr. Groening may not be as rare as a fart joke on Fraiser they're not exactly common either. Sure, if you consider the appearence of his name in the credits an appearse they might be, but noboby does. I do recall some cameo apearences in Simpsons and at least twice in Futurama, but when you consider the collective volume of Simpsons episoides there are those appearences are quite few. Pluse he hasnever had a speaking role on either show.

I'm looking forward to seeing this episodes. I hope they get a few zingers in at Fox's expense. I know it's not much but at least they're keeping Futurama in the public's eye. (By them I mean Matt & Company). Fox can burn for all I care.

Well Futurama is being brought back to the public eye in a big way, so it is possible that they are getting ready to bring it back. All we can do is hope..

If John Dimaggino is the Voice of the singing Bender Doll then alllllllllll is right again, Look at it this way if Family Guy is comming back because of DVD sales and high ratings on CN's adult swim you got to figure that Futurama will be back 2005....2006,

Season three sales seem to be doing well and Futurama also provides high Adult Swim ratings.

I think I've got it figured out. Though The Simpsons does exist within the Futurama universe, the time period is not specified. Therefore, it could be a different show about the Simpsons inspired by the true life Simpsons (in the Simpsons Universe) that took place after the episodes of the Simpsons we've already seen. Okay, I admit it's a long shot.

The season 3 sales are doing wonderful.. whoever mentioned it... I went to taret and saw them... A couple days later when I came back there weren't any left... Best buys stocked with 'em though... They've got everything... And their stuff is so rare to find you ca only get it off the internet,like the action figures. I want a talking bender doll. DO you think matt groening will really be at a convention signing them?

#11, the problem with your theory is that Matt has explained in a commentary that The Simpsons is very much fiction, whereas Futurama is "the truth".

Also, we've seen a flashback of Fry in his youth and seen a Homer Simpson doll there with him.

*My Futurama DVDs stay in their original cases/boxes. The video game, however, sits in a DiscSox with no ill effect.

Futurama exists in a universe where The Simpsons, as a family, didn't exist; but "The Simpsons" TV show did.

Ok, as said. Futurama exists in an actual univers giving meaning to time. Where as the simpsons are a show. As we have seen in futurama the simpsons were a show also hence the merchandice in episodes we've seen.

We have seen bender(and others) appear in the simpsons. Is it possible these charactures have traveld back in time as fry has? Maybe it is something they have had planned on writing or have written(Movie, unaired shows) Who knows<shrug>

The time theory would work, I think. Bender has appeared in barts dreams, why not others? As far as I can think of, the simpsons aired in 87, so the simpsons are set in a 1987 world. I don't think there are refrences to a time period that I can think of off hand. So it is possible Matt is bringing out that Futurama has been something he has been working on since 1987? Maybe...

They're not in the same universe. As can be clearly seen in examples from both shows, Futurama is a show in The Simpsons universe and The Simpsons is a show in the Futurama universe. However, this would form a paradox as well... Also, comics don't count towards the show universes.

Looks like they've updated the Groening caricature - the previous model (which is on this website!) looks like the Groening of 15 years ago. The newer version looks too slim, though...

I hope Matt gets a better intro than the typical Simpsons guest star - nothing like "Wow, Prime Minister Tony Blair!" or "J.K. Rowling!" or "Paul McCartney! But where's your wife Linda??" Remember the good old days when the guest star was reasonably important to the plot? These days they cram as many celebrities into an episode as possible, and have them casually stroll down whatever street Homer is on...

...sorry, this is really turning into a typical Simpsons post for "Jump The Shark."

The article says SIGNING, not SINGING, though I had to look twice to make sure.

Anything to get Futurama into the spotlight is fine with me. They need to bring this show back, and soon!

Anyone ever see the episode of the Simpsons "Behind The Laughter"? That episode destroys the 4th wall of television making the Simpsons living breathing people in our own world. In the episode, it reveals that Homer came up with the idea of a sitcom starring his family which he sold to Rupert Murdoch as the fledgling Fox Network struggled to find an anchor show. The Simpsons are 100% aware of the merchandise bearing their images, and they love it. SO, Matt actually COULD conceivably guest on The Simpsons as Futurama's creator, and still write Simpsons jokes into Futurama. That settles that.

I knew they would save Matt until close to the end. I didn't much like the episode, I wish he had more air time, but it was great seeing new references to Futurama. I hope they do that in future Simpson episodes.
