Can't get enough Futurama
In Color

And the Emmys go to...

... not Futurama, I'm afraid.

With two nominations for the 56th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards, Futurama lost in both categories.
While the episode "The Sting" had to give way for Samurai Jack's "The Birth of Evil" as Outstanding Animated Program (< 1h), the Outstanding Music and Lyrics Award went to "Until The Violence Stops" on Lifetime Television.

The Simpsons were also nominamted in these two categories and in addition had one nomination for "Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Dramatic Underscore)". That award went to "Star Trek: Enterprise".

Now the question is if it's good or bad that no Groening show "stole" the Emmy from the other...

Well, I can't really say the winners don't deserve the award, until I watch the Samurai Hack (yeah, no typo there) episode, and listen to the song that won for Until the Violence Stops, if I can actually find it anywhere. But the latter certainly looks like some pretty namby-pamby crap suckfest that appeals to our emotions only as a sellout, rather than as genuine good writing, as in "The Sting" and "The Devil's Hands". Oh, can you tell I'm still a little bitter about this? That'll subside by tomorrow, though.

fox are dickeads cancel futurama huh, everybody knows its better than the simpsons, comman sense mate, just look at beaudens comment, says it all
dedvirusSep 13th 2004, 08:10
I'm happy that Samurai Jack actually beat The Simpsons. Maybe there's a hint of common sense over there after all.
BrainSluggoSep 13th 2004, 09:34
Let's drop the whole "if it's not Futurama it sucks" routine, huh? We love "Futurama" but there are other things in the world, believe it or not, that have just as much value. Grow up.
AcidFrySep 13th 2004, 09:38
Sad that "Devils hands..." dident win, one of the best episodes in season 4 i think... sad, its the last emmys futurama gets nominated for, and no winners.
LittleJimmySep 13th 2004, 09:56
Samurai Jack?! I think we've been cheated!!!

Zoidburg: And the winner, instead of any of the nominees.....
JeremyFeinSep 13th 2004, 15:34
Zoidberg: But Futurama Fans the Epidode and Scroe Got Nomiated.....

Bender....That's a Fancy term for losing (Takes out his aggression by beating Zoidberg.

Zoidberg : Forgive me my friend.

Bender: Never

It's all good, im not suprised that we didnt get nominated cause we havent had new episodes in a while, lil over a year
OmicronPersei8Sep 13th 2004, 18:15
Jeez, it didn't even go to the Simpsons?
AdamJGiessSep 13th 2004, 18:23
I'm just glad that musical Simpsons episode didn't win. I saw it and it was bad. Devil's Hands was much better. I don't understand people who still think The Simpsons is a great show. My guess is that they never really appreciated what the show really was to begin with, and now that it's not that anymore, they don't notice any difference.
I miss The Simpsons. The old Simpsons.
humanhornSep 13th 2004, 18:42
The Samurai Jack episode was actually pretty good. It had zero dialogue. It premiered during the blackout in august of '03, so it was timed similar to the Futurama finale.

As much as I like Futuram, Samurai Jack was different enough that it deserved a win.
OtisPJivefunkSep 13th 2004, 19:42
I'm not surprised that Futurama didn't win, but The Simpsons didn't either! That I am surprised about. Could this be the beginning of the end for The Simpsons, or just an unlucky year for Groening?...
turkinaaSep 13th 2004, 20:03
im just glad simpsons didn't win. i love the simpsons but i love futurama more and futurama needs to win the awards and such to show its still alive. but i don't want simpsons to win because its the simpsons thus it must be good idea. face it simpsons are going down hill because its getting...well...poor. there is so much more to futurama and i was hoping if it won an award then it might mean its time to bring it back. guess i have to keep waiting. at least simpsons didn't win.
BreeanneSep 13th 2004, 20:35
ok i hope i dont afend anyone here but awards mean jack! i mean if Futurama did win they may of had a little more of a chance of comming back but it really wouldent have made much differnce.
WesSep 13th 2004, 22:01
It may help Samurai Jack, as Cartoon Network stopped production on that show and is considering cancelling it as well...
futurefanSep 13th 2004, 23:44
How did you guys at CGEF know they lost?
AdamJGiessSep 13th 2004, 23:56
Some awards are given out before the show because they decided they aren't important enough for it.
MikeSmithSep 14th 2004, 00:12
Wait till Jack come to Adult Swim!

You'll see!
frySep 14th 2004, 00:56
The emmys are a lie!!!
whats this about Samurai jack
BenderSep 14th 2004, 01:25
What the hell??? if only the show was a person i would break his neck !!!
johndoedoeSep 14th 2004, 02:51
If anyone is interested in trying to get Futurama back, ckeck out this website:

LeelaLoverSep 14th 2004, 04:23
If you piss off FOX with anchovies, they may never bring back Futurama. Maybe a food that won't spoil could annoy them, and letters would work.
Again it's a slim chance, but if it's true that Family Guy and Futurama cost the same to make (Futurama a little bit more expensive), and that becuase of high ratings on Cartoon Network and good DVD sales (which Futurama all has. It's #8 on that Billboard Top 10 DVD sales. Which is good if the information is legitimate.), why not bring back Futurama for a trial season, or even a movie. See how everything goes (with FOX actually putting it on a decent time, like right after Simpsons, and promoting it, and not premepting it), then Futurama could come back, and be profitable.
But I'm not getting my hopes up. As for the awards, it sucks, but as someone said, it's been a while since new episodes have been made. And at least Simpsons didn't win.
If Simpsons go downhill, it could help Futurama, because if FOX was smart, they'd try out Futurama.
PersonSep 14th 2004, 05:32
Well, I think atleast the nomination was good, considering production stopped awhile ago. Not a big fan of the Simpsons, and plus I remember the old episodes were much better anyways. We lost to Lifetime? Pretty sad.

I don't believe Futurama will get back on air. I prefer no to get my hopes up, because I'm always wrong bout these things. So if I say it won't happen, it will ;)
bigucSep 14th 2004, 06:06
it's a fair bet that when the simpsons is finally put down, futurama will come back to take its place.
RoverSep 14th 2004, 23:32
#23, Futurama is costlier than Family Guy because Futurama uses special effects and other such details that amount to quite a bit of money. But it is bullshit that Futurama lost to Lifetime.
LeelaLoverSep 15th 2004, 00:58
It's been said before, but I'll say it again:

If FOX had promoted the show well, put it right after the Simpsons on Sundays, and tried not to pre-empt it (and if it did, it should be shown in it's entierty later in the week), then Futurama would have been a huge success. Maybe not huge, but it would've done well.
I can't believe that they wouldn't want to bring it back for a measly trial season. If they bothered to listen to fans, they'd realize they made a huge mistake, and could make money if they could bring it back.
ThomasVeilSep 15th 2004, 02:03

I don't think it's a good or bad thing. The fact still remains that two episodes were at least nominated. Now, if DVD sales stay good for a while, that could potentially be good news for the show. I just got mine to help the cause. Time will tell, I guess, but I like the positive news that's been coming out in the last week or so.
GingerSep 15th 2004, 02:47
I'm really upset about the emmys. "The Sting" and "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" are great episodes. I'm really upset that Futurama didn't win these awards because it won't be nominated for an emmy again.(unless if Fox gets some brains and brings it back). I am also surprised that The Simpsons didn't win.

The Emmys seemed to be messed up this year but I hope Fox brings Futurama back with new episodes so it can have another chance at an Emmy.
johnonymousSep 15th 2004, 04:39
Ken Keeler's work on the last episode of Futurama wasn't good at all. Even in the commentary he admitted it and said the entire melody was just a layout, in which he would've written something better later. I don't know why the Futurama crew talked him into using this one. It was bad - especially in comparison to his other work, like the song from the most recent santa episode. I love Futurama to death, but the only good thing about that song was Billy West's performance on the word "dork."
LeelaLoverSep 15th 2004, 06:24
I can't believe a show with pratciaclly no dialogue won. (That is Samuari Jack right? Or am I mixing it something else?)
My hopes were going up, but I'm trying to tell myself not to get my hopes up. I'm pissed Futurama lost, but I'll be happy enough with the episodes I have now.
It would be nice if it came back, even for only 1 hour, as long as the Futurama crew patched everything up.
LeelaLoverSep 15th 2004, 06:32
^^^Patching everything up, meaning that we find out whether or not Fry and Leela really got together, if Bender got his shiny metal ass back, etc...
FuturamanerdSep 17th 2004, 03:00
How can they do this? I mean Samuri Jack? The Simpsons didn't even win, that's a outrage! At least the Simpsons if not Futurama. And Lifetime? Isn't that the network people make fun of? The Emmy's are really messed up this year! Plus,we needed that win to put in the letter that we're sending to Fox for AFF.This is soooo not cool.
BigAlSep 17th 2004, 21:15
#26-Family Guy and Futurama cost about the same to produce. Granted Futurama's budget goes to such things as special effects and computer animation, but Family Guy uses things like a 35-piece orchestra for each episode.

They're both very good, very expensive shows.
LeelasTwinSep 18th 2004, 05:16
What. The. Fuck.

The single best Futurama episode EVER lost to Samurai Jack, a show with zero dialog and just nonstop action and very little plot. Sickening.
confusedSep 19th 2004, 18:04
wait, am i missing something, i looked at the emmy site, and it said that they had won an emmy. please clarify!!
confusedSep 20th 2004, 05:50
never mind i'm a dumb ass that can't read. But futurama did get fuckin robbed. i can't believe this happened yet again.
ikillkennySep 21st 2004, 00:18
Enough of the Samurai Jack bashing. Just because a show has little dialogue does not mean that emotion and story is not expressed. The animation (especially the color and atmosphere) in Samurai Jack has always been superb and IMO the plot is very good. I've seen both The Sting and The Birth of Evil several times and The Birth of Evil is leaps and bounds better than The Sting (which I didn't think was a particularily great Futurama episode).

But there is no reason to hate either show. They're actually in similar predicaments and I wish that both shows would get the renewal that they justly deserve.
FhqwhgadsSep 21st 2004, 18:09
No emmy, so what? Samurai Jack was a better show, they deserved it. "The Sting" wasn't the best Futurama episode out there. Samurai Jack won and hope Cartoon Network brings that back.
benderSep 22nd 2004, 22:28
Oh crap!
boxcarracerOct 2nd 2004, 19:03
Samurai Jack???? Are they serious?????? THAT'S A LITTLE KID'S SHOW!!!!

#39, something's wrong with your brain. YOu're not a five year old anymore.
PulpFiction94imdbcomOct 2nd 2004, 19:42
"The Sting" was not THE best Futurama episode, but it was one of the best. Extremely well-written. I didn't think any of the other nominees were even up to par with the above mentioned Futurama episode. The other nominees were South Park ("It's Christmas in Canada", a good episode, not better than "The Sting", but it was my second choice), The Simpsons ("The Way We Weren't", a crappy episode from a (IMO) mediocre season), SpongeBob SquarePants ("SpongeBob B.C.", a stupid episode from a genrally funny and well-written show (as far as kids shows go; you have to be more lenient with them)), and Samurai Jack ("The Birth of Evil", an episode I have not seen, but I have seen enough of this show to know that it's just an OK kids show, and most likely not better than Futurama no matter what episode you're referring to).
SuperLuigiangrymodeNov 14th 2004, 21:05
Bender:What the f*beep*k,Samurai Jack?I could kick ass!
Me:Futurama should have won!Or at least The Simpsons!Even the the worst episode of Family Guy was 100,000 times better than all the Samurai Jack episodes. Also South Park was better than that.EVEN Spongebob was better than Samurai Jack.#39,BITE MY SHINY METAL ASS!The show should be called Samurai Jackass!
SuperLuigiNov 14th 2004, 21:09
Hey they posted my name wrong! It was supposed to be "Super Luigi (angry mode!)"
CarlNov 21st 2004, 14:50
Meh
i've always hated samurai jack.
I could never take that show seriously. The simplistic animation mixed with cinematic action sequences didn't impress me at all and most of my friends feel the same way. Genndy shoulda stuck to dexter's lab. imho, that show was infinitely superior to samurai jack back when genndy was still workin on it.
