New Matt Groening interview in EW

Matt Groening (Creator, Futurama, Simpsons) was interviewed in the September 10th issue of Entertainment Weekly - But hey, guess what? We nerdy computer people get an extended online-only version of the same interview thanks to ew.com. Here's a snippet:
Reruns get great ratings on the Cartoon Network. Any chance of a ''Family Guy''-like resurrection for ''Futurama''?
We're trying to figure it out. If we can do more episodes, we'd love to. It's a very ambitious show, and it's very expensive. That's been a sticking point. What [co-developer] David Cohen and I would love is to continue many of the stories we worked out in advance. All science-fiction epics have an underlying theme, which is ''things are not what they seem to be,'' and that was certainly the case with ''Futurama.'' David and I worked for a couple of years [planning the show] before we even pitched it, and we haven't revealed all of the secrets that are embedded in it. There are even characters that we created back in the beginning of the series that we never got around to introducing. It looks like a goofy cartoon, but the underlying science-fiction ideas are pretty good.
Remember to read this in context of our earlier report on come-back rumors. So please, don't post "OMG futurama iz teh back!!!! LOOLLZz" in the comments feature of this article.

OMG futurama iz teh back!!!! LOOLLZz

Sorry, I just had to.

Now on a more serious note, I know this will probably get some bad responses but why can't Groening and company just scrap the CGI effects that make the show so gull darn expensive?

I know it wouldn't be the same thing. What makes Futurama special is its hi-tech flashy animation, not just its witty writing. However, isn't the character developement, plot, and writing of Futurama the most important factors of the series?

I think we could bare a Futurama without the neato CGI effects. If the show is truely as good as we all believe it to be, then perhaps there is a way they can bring back Futurama and make it more financially sound for the people behind what is the great cartoon in the history of television! Or atleast it is in this viewer's opinion.
JonSep 25th 2004, 09:17
#2, problem is, the way futurama is animated, is just as expensive. It's not sent to japan, or any of that. it's all done here. If they were to change the way the show is animated, it would kill the feel of the show.

Remember the few times Bender appeared on the simpsons? He was dull looking...that's how the show would look if they changed styles.
[-mArc-]Sep 25th 2004, 09:52
While Futurama isn't sent to Japan for animating, it is sent to Korea for the brunt of the animating work. The CGI parts and the rough key frames are done in the US though.
RichardSep 25th 2004, 11:03
I disagree, #2. If Futurama can't come back 100% (meaning no more cgi) then it shouldn't come back at all.

I, and I'm sure no one else, wants a half-assed resurrection.
ShadowSep 25th 2004, 11:20
I agree with #5. As much as I want Futurama back it wouldn't be the same. I love it and all and I want to see what happens in the end, but it'll be no good. Whats the point really?

I didn't used to think this but after watching the episodes over and over you really start to think that it would'nt be as good without the animation. You need the animation.
OtisPJivefunkSep 25th 2004, 11:48
I don't think it'd be right to completely cut the CGI, it's needed for the Planet Express ship flying and stuff. They could easily limit it to just the essentials though, and save money that way...
NickSep 25th 2004, 14:52
Well, this is more good news. If teh creators of the show are behing it, and talking about it things are heading in the right direction.

I've never liked Family Guy, but netowrks always use what has worked before. If a million people watch Family Guy, they are much more likely to re-launch Futurama.

I don't want Futurama to come back if it cannot come back %100. Remeber the Ren and Stimpy resurection? The new episodes blew. I hope that doesn't happen to Futurama. If they can't get everything completely back to where it was, I wouldn't want to see more episodes.
AndrewMSep 25th 2004, 16:51
Look, face it. The fact is, the creators would'nt bring it back without the animation it used to have.
They feel like Richard does. They gave us 4 good seasons and they don't want to ruin the whole over all feel of the show.
DavidGalindoSep 25th 2004, 17:39
If family guy does really, really well, we have a real good chance of seeing more Futurama. Definitely.
futuramablinks182Sep 25th 2004, 18:19
No one has talked about American Dad yet.. or Team America..
TJKSep 25th 2004, 19:24
if they could get it to the way the animation was in the first few eps, that'd be fine by me cuz those eps were freakin to die for
dyingformorfuturamaSep 25th 2004, 20:37
I can't believe they're gonna bring back family guy and not Futurama. This is why television SUX! I think of ALOT of good shows that were on FOX and now are cancelled and it drives me nuts! If they really cared about the show they should have had it on at 8:30 after the Simpsons or at least on at Prime Time. That 7:00 time was crap! During football season just how many times was the show pre-empted anyway? Just the fact it got to stay on for 4 years at that crummy time shows what size of audience it could have had if they had it on at a prime time. This show will NEVER come back..wish all you want but once again the viewing audience got screwed. Thanks FOX!!....for nothing.

DerStummelSep 25th 2004, 22:56
i agree with #13. Futurama is way better than family guy, and IT got reput on fox. Plus, if family guy got cancelled once from fox, what makes them think it wont happen again? if so, then it will blow much more than it already does.
PJSep 25th 2004, 23:38
negative thinking ain't gonna help matters
HermesSep 26th 2004, 00:36
right now i would give all the money i have, which is not much, to help develop the next episode of futurama.

LeelaLoverSep 26th 2004, 02:58
As I've said before, at least make a special episode. (It would have to be 1 hour though.) See what happens from that, after good promoting.
On a side note, Matt Groening has gotten fat or what? I mean absolutely no disrespect, but he looks different. I apologize for even saying that about him, but I'm telling it how I see. He looked much different than what he looked like in the videos of him in Volume 1.

You guys may be mad Family Guy is back and Futurama isn't, but face it, Family Guy sold alot of DVD's.
SooSep 26th 2004, 08:41
And Nsync sold alot of CDs.
your point?
RichardSep 26th 2004, 08:53
Ok...Family Guy sold quite a few more DVD's than Futurama...more viewers means higher ratings.
RyanSep 26th 2004, 09:18
I think the point made is that that doesn't make it a better show.
BrainSluggoSep 26th 2004, 10:04
If all the CGI were cut (save--maybe--for the ships), it wouldn't affect me at all. I love "Futurama" for the acting and writing, not the technical stuff.

If CN can produce something as decently-animated as "Venture Brothers," I would be more than happy to see them do "Futurama." All I would want is as many of the original cast--and writing team--as possible. (And the Groening character design, but that's a given.)

When you're going under for the third time, you don't bitch because you dislike the color of the life preserver someone's thrown you.
RichardSep 26th 2004, 10:44
I never said Family Guy was a better show because they got more DVD sales, I'm looking at this from Fox's point of view...money, money, money.

I love Futurama much more than The Family Guy.
sEanSep 26th 2004, 11:02
Even if they were gonna start right now on makeing new episodes, we wouldn't see squat till 2006 or later. So *farts real loud and poops in pants*
blackUpSep 26th 2004, 12:27
Well,if we knew there'll devenetly be more eps waiting shouldn't be a problem because you can look foward to it.
NickSep 26th 2004, 15:59

Futurama is a great show, better than Family guy, but that is, perhaps, why it is not as popular...

True, Futurama was hard to find on the TV sceduel, but I believe the real reason it was cancled was because you have to be smart to enjoy a large portion of the jokes and, you have to know a lot about popular culture. Family Guy has a much wider audience because it appeals to stupider people; you don't have to be smart to laugh at "Licking Toad". There are more stupid people in the world, and even more stupid TV watchers.

Fry said "Clever things make people feel stupid" I'm afraid that is what Futurama did to many viewers.

scummbuddySep 26th 2004, 21:00
along with #17, jeez, if Matt is making buttloads of money off the simpsons, in its not-needed-to-be 16th season (dear God), then why doesn't he just fund the show back to life. Hes got a huge hold over Fox. (ala Cartman: "Be all like "hey, if you dont put futurama back on, with my finacial help, then I'll take my simpsons off and f-up your channel even more")

okay, so thats not plausible, but why doesnt he take the show to any other network, he may be, but we dont hear of it. F*** fox, they obviosuly dont care, and Cartoon Network do. Jeez, Futurama has been getting better ratings on Saturday then Family Guy has been getting on Sundays, by 50,000 people. thats a hell of a lot of more viewers.
ShadowSep 27th 2004, 01:55
The thing is Matt doesn't have the money to spare. If you read the article it he quotes that it takes a lot of money to make a show. He needs the money to pay the Simpsons writers, animators ect. He also needs to pay Fox for using their station. Nothing's free in this world.
JokillerSep 27th 2004, 02:25
I completely agree with #31

Amen.
MKizzleSep 27th 2004, 04:35
I think that Family Guy makes you need to know popular culture also because of many of their flashbacks, but it had more spontaneous-ness than Futurama. Futurama always made me feel better though and that's why I bought their DVD and not the Family Guy DVDs.

NoAPOlogiesSep 27th 2004, 06:28
I really think that Groening's best shot at a resurrection of the show lies in the hands of "Billionaire" Ted Turner, since Turner is the parent company of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim and TBS and TNT. Now that the last season DVD has come out, along with a big box set, I think FOX will let go of the show since they would get nothing out of it. I would love to see Turner stick it to another fellow billionaire in Rupert Murdoch.
RichardSep 27th 2004, 08:41
#31 has it alright, what other show would make a joke about the Uncertainty Principal. You have to be a real nerd to truely enjoy this show and sadly, there just aren't enough nerds ;)
fizzleSep 27th 2004, 10:44
IT IS OFFICIAL "FUTURAMA IS REBORN" This morning fox announced that they have revived futurama. Ted Turners bid to buy futurama has been rejected and Fox has realised its potential.

-Sorry, I just had to post it. There's a chance, but my hope has been lost ever since I found out the Movie Hole Rumor was false.

I think that if Fox showed some of the favorite episodes of the series, starting with the first four. If Fox got an unbelivable amount of veiws, they can return the show.
OrrazibSep 29th 2004, 05:16
Futurama recently got the best ratings for Cartoon Network EVER (beating Family Guy) [source:
And continues to do well on DVD. As a fan of TV, and hopefully working on a certin unnamed TV show soon, I can tell you the world of TV ratings is screwed up. But networks still LOVE the ratings. Knowing Fox, they *may* consider it - in my opinion, it depends on the ratings the return of Family Guy. If it does even halfway well for Fox, they may try to pull it off with Futurama too.

Of course, I thought Fox was certainly going to renew "John Doe", so I could be wrong, but this is truly what I think.

Oh, and I have almost no doubt the return of Family Guy will do will. (as long as Fox deosn't mess with scheduling again....grr...)

Takr that to mean what it will.

Good news everyone!

Amen to life preserver analogy and smart-media-often-fails observations. We're reading these comments here because we love the show fanatically -- so please rally around the revival without factions. Twin Peaks, Trek, Famioly Guy and others were expensive revivals. Are the comics, video game, toys and DVD extras or packaging lifeless? No way!

Before you tsk tsk folks like me who tolerate 2D animation or less than %100" new episodes, please remind yourselves new episodes will (patience) be unproduced Groening-Cohen episodes.
One episode specials are impractical and prone to shark-jumping anolmolies that won't revamp the staff or network.

I don't applaud sock-puppets (except Triumph and the Anipals) or stick figures with crap writing and voice over. R&Stimpy waned because John K (voice and visionary behind series) bolted. Original Series Trek fans no doubt bemoaned TNG. films, and anything new. Breathe and hope.

bragaOct 2nd 2004, 04:30
I totally agree with #12 but with the nuance brought by #22 minus what #9 said. Nah don't read those back I'm just messing with you.

Honestly, I loved both Family Guy and Futurama, both great shows. Someone said that Futurama wasn't as popular as FG because it was too clever. The fact is, the really clever jokes were always in the background while the less subtle ones were right in your face. FG was more absurd and quick on-the-go comedy (which is easy to sell) while Futurama had many layers. That's why Futurama reruns are doing so well compared to FG: jokes you missed and deeper universe.
AJRimmerOct 2nd 2004, 10:03
Well, wasn't it posted here sometime ago that futurama made the top three list of merchandise profits and they were one step above Family Guy? There are no Family Guy DVD here in Sweden but almost everyone I know own a Futurama DVD.The show's more popular than any other show (at least animated ones) and it's Matt Groening for pete's sake! There really was no good reason for FOX to cancel it. I hope to God that they bring it back!
Bisected8Oct 2nd 2004, 11:53

One way for futurama to come back is to lower the prices of the season box sets. In Australia, a whole family guy season at full price costs about 28 dollars, but futurama seasons cost about eighty dollars full price. if the prices are lowered, that will mean more sales and the return of futurama.

PulpFiction94imdbcomOct 2nd 2004, 19:23
I love Futurama and I really hope it comes back. But I also really love Family Guy and am... well, surprised to see how many people here don't like it. And before people jump to conclusions, I also am a huge Simpsons fan, so don't day I am biased in any way. I don't see Family Guy as a "clone" or "rip-off" of The Simpsons, I just think the two shows are similar in that they have surface similarities. This is what I said an ignorant Simpsons fanboy who trolled the FG bords several months ago, saying it was a Simpsons "rip-off":

"As I and other users have stated in countless other threads, the creator of FG (Seth MacFarlane) has stated that he was a big fan of TS in college and wanted to put his own spin on how he saw an animated primetime sitcom family. And this is about as similar as these two shows get. You have to be pretty brain dead to see the obvious differences between the two shows- the storyline structures and executions of each shows episodes, the style of humor, the pace, etc. The Simpsons WAS a great show because it USED TO have excellent writing (in terms of storyline structure and execution) and generate warm; feel-good moments and send out great messages illustrating family values, whereas FG has better writing in the area of dialogue (yes, I said it, the dialogue in this show is funnier than in TS) and overall randomness, shock-value and edginess (if you cannot see that this show was much more edgy and controversial than TS, use facts: most episodes from TS are certified with a TV-PG rating while most of FG's episodes are certified with a TV-14 rating). Also, FG's episodes are better on repeat viewings than TS's episodes because of their lightning-fast pace, resulting in the consistent entertainment and an extremely high joke-to-laugh ratio. So while FG may be a basic spin-off of The Simpsons (in other words it has somewhat similar characters) it is much, much different on the inside. The Simpsons has been on the air so long that it has developed a signature style and vibe that it emits which I feel no other show will ever be able to copy.

And speaking of how TS used to have great writing and great feel good moments, the emphasis strongly applies to the phrase 'used to' because I and many others have found TS to be very lacking in these areas that made TS a wonderful show and turned it into the cultural phenomenon that it is to this day. The writers just use the characters as vessel to do whatever they want with, their quirks are exploited to their extremes (i.e. Homer being even more of an idiot (and less funny) and Lisa being more of a genius (and less of a likable character)). Also, in addition to the characters becoming less appealing, the storylines are becoming more stupid, random, and childish without being funny (in an obvious attempt to copy FG's style of humor and still claiming that FG is a rip-off because TS has become such a cultural phenomenon that the people who work on TS know that it superficially seems (to the less intelligent people in our country, which makes up most of the population) that FG is a rip-off). Sitcom-esque American families, even animated ones, are practically a genre for TV. There WERE TV shows that had this genre that came before TS (i.e. Married... With Children, The Flintstones, The Honeymooners, etc.). But for arguments sake lets say this was not a genre for TV. So according to your outlook, just as FG is a 'rip-off' of TS, TS is a rip-off of any of the three above mentioned shows in the parentheses."

So that's how I feel. You don't agree with it? Fine. I totally respect that. I just wanted throw in my two cents here.
heatherOct 3rd 2004, 12:53
i have sent an e-mail to fox and i agree with #58 whos with me and jay fund raising for the revivel of futurama
SlackJawedMoronOct 3rd 2004, 14:30

Hey, while I can agree that Family Guy isn't a Simpsons rip-off, I still find it a vastly inferior to the Simpsons, and overall very disposable show. It's random-ness, ironically, becomes predictable after a while, and as for 'edginess'... well, great, it can crack more jokes that are likely to offend people, but they aren't that much funnier for it. Or all that funny at all. (This from someone who loves a good baby joke). And also, you must understand, that whilst the Simpsons is rather tame these days, go back a decade and you'd find that the show was more controversial that Family Guy could ever hope to be. It's all about context, people (and South Park out does them both as far as general offensivness goes).

It's funny that you say that the show does better on repeat viewings then The Simpsons, as, as far as I'm concerned, this is Family Guy's crippling weakness. It's jokes... just aren't that great. Sure, I'll watch an ep, have a few laughs... but I'll never get the desire to watch it again. The humour's all one level. You'll eiter get it, or you won't, and you aren't likely to miss a gag.

All in all, if you were to ask me, Family Guy's a laugh, but not really worth getting that interested in.

(And it goes without saying, but yes, the Simpsons went of their rails of hilarity some time ago).
Rymd-BjrnOct 4th 2004, 23:20
I predict that Futurama will retain its most fanatic followers, who will organize conventions and dress up as Bender. Then, 20 years from now, the show will be resurrected in the form of Futurama - The Next Generation. That one will be great, even better than the original series, but we will all be old and bitter and will hate the new show.

Futurama just keeps gettin funnier the more i watch it. If i were comparing each cartoon to a woman, id say family guy was the one night stand type, futurama is the type you love and gets sexier the more you see her

Wow #87, that was very poignant. I feel the same way, except I like men. FG loses its shock value after several viewings, and Futurama just seems to get funnier. There are so many jokes in the background that I don't notice until after several viewings.

Family Guy is just as brilliant as Futurama, I'm afraid =(

Maybe not in an intellegent sort of way- but it angers me that you assum that was done intentionally for money. The makers happen to be nice people too, you know. It *is* a good, clever show as well, but in a different way.

Family Guy and Futurama are quite easily in the top three shows of all time (the other is obvious). And for you Mr. its gets boring i say "your an idiot". Both good shows, both deserve to be shoown over and over again, both deserve to replace all those other crappy reality programs and the criminal ones, and the rest of that shit. Power to Family and futurama. The TV line up should show one episode of the simpsons, one family guy, and one futurama, one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama, one simpsons, one family guy, one futuramaone simpsons, one family guy, one futurama one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama one simpsons, one family guy, one futurama. For the rest of time.

Hey! I've got another reason why Futurama should return... on the list for best tv shows for men, it ranked 7, according to this one website. It may not be a big reason- but it's a reason!
Go here for proof

I'm in the UK. By the time Futurama was even slightly well known over here, it was already cancelled.
Now, near enough everyone I know with an average-or-better IQ, loves the show and so do their kids.

OK so it's expensive to make, but hey; how many people would like to see it back? How about a Futurama fund?

can't we all chip in $5 through paypal or something? that'd raise about five squillion billion dollars. we could start our own network with gambling and hookers Etc.

How about it?
