Cohen exec-producing new Project

According to a Variety news item Futurama executive producer and co-creator David X. Cohen is working on a new animated TV show for FOX.

The half-hour "Grandmaster Freak & the Furious 15" will be centered around a 17 year old rap crew leader in Englewood, N.J. around the year 1982.

If the pilot ordered by the network and written by David is successful in convincing FOX to order a first season, they hope to have a musical performance in every episode.

Executive producer Ice Cube will likely voice some character on the show, albeit not "Grandmaster Freak" himself.

This sounds reeeeeally weird. But I'm open minded, and with David writing and producing it there's a good chance it could be a work of genius.

I guess this is the final nail in the coffin as far as Cohen is concerned, if this new show takes off it's unlikely he could go back to Futurama unless it was a one-off movie.

I gotta say I'm a little iffy about it also. I trust David very much, he's a great writer. But the show idea just seems odd.

Yes, I think likewise. I still had hope for Futurama to return, even if it sounds ridiculous, but now my hopes died.
Some thigns are not made for this world...

AndieOct 22nd 2004, 18:26
knowing fox it'll get like 18 seasons!
bigucOct 22nd 2004, 18:33
this show should be hillarious. it's about a suburban teenager thinking he's a rapper. it's in the 80s too. what more do you want?
BenderisGreatOct 22nd 2004, 20:54
But will Collio be in it?

Since I listened to the Futurama Season three DVD commentary and David Loved Coolio

Just curious
fryfanOct 22nd 2004, 21:33
Who's doing the animation? What will it look like?
enoOct 22nd 2004, 22:25
I'm sure the show will be funny, but I don;t see fox keeping it around for long.(if fox even lets them make a pilot at all) After all, if they can cance Futurama and Family Guy then they can cancel this new show. Fox likes to keep there television show slots open for crappy shows(except The Simpsons and a FEW others)and sports. Also, fox already tried a hip-hop show (Method and Red) and it didn't work.

this idea sounds awful. and why do people still mention family guy as if its good? its a horrible retarded show where all of the jokes are right on the surface. Plus, the animation is pathetic.
fydiousisstupidOct 23rd 2004, 00:23
how dumb are you fydious? family guy is nearly as good as futurama if not just as good. just because you all the jokes are over your head doesn't mean it's a stupid show dumbass
LoveForFryOct 23rd 2004, 01:08
I think this show will fail miserably. I will only tune in because of David. this also tells me that my hopes of futurama comin back are slimmer. Maybe AFF will help.
Eyedol7513Oct 23rd 2004, 01:10
Family Guy does have good animation, and this is coming from a huge Futurama fan. The jokes are simple jokes, right on the surface. It's successful if it's like that, because a lot of people don't want to think for jokes, and some are just plain stupid to understand and appreciate the humor of Futurama.
I hope David does well. Hell, I hope everyone who worked on Futurama does well.
ZmithyOct 23rd 2004, 01:25
Remember in the 'a tale of two santas' dvd commentary when David X Cohen mentioned that he really liked the rapper Coolio's voices, and would be "casting him in his next animated show" ?

I'm just wondering if this has been on the cards for quite some time...

And Futurama was then lost forever.

Say goodbye.
FuturamaNerdOct 23rd 2004, 02:12
Well good luck Cohen. I'll watch it,just to see how it is.
WooterOct 23rd 2004, 03:21
David X. Cohen doing a rap-based show? That realy doesn't soud like his style at all. What will al the nerds think? I'm so confused.

two days and counting
fydiousOct 24th 2004, 09:16
family guy is nearly as good as futurama if not just as good. boy, that person told me.they obviously know what they're talking about. i suppose we should all love animation that looks like shockwave.
fydiousOct 24th 2004, 09:25
i also hope that swinton scott isn't one of the directors.
mshdOct 25th 2004, 22:35
#23 fydious,
You may not like Family Guy's animation but it was one of the reasons that Fox decided to bring it back instead of Futurama. (besides the DVD sales which Family Guy had a lot more of, showing that more people like it) After all, Family Guy's "crappy" animation is cheaper to make than Futurama's animation.

I don't think there's any good reasoning behind calling Futurama an over all smarter show, in the sense of comedy, than Family Guy. They both have their obscure jokes, and they both have their obvious jokes. Just because a joke references something only a physicist would get, doesn't mean it's a better joke. You can't throw away classic Family Guy lines like "Cigarettes killed my father.. and raped my mother" when Futurama has it's share of "Honey comb big, yeah yeah yeah, it's not small no no no"s. Family guy references just as much obscure pop culture as Futurama does, as well. You're fixated on Family Guy's small assortment of poop jokes, and you seem to be forgetting that Bender literally shits out bricks for comedy's sake.

I love Futurama and Family Guy almost equally, I think both shows have the same amount of smart, obscure refrences and silly, potty humor and they're both excellently written.

But to those who allege that Family Guy lacks any intelligence in it's writing, I refer you to the following scene from the episode "One if by clam, two if by sea"...

Lois: All British men are charming!

Peter: Yeah right, that's what they said about Benjamin Disraeli!

(cut to Disraeli writing at his desk)

Benjamin Disraeli: You don't even know who I am!

I mean c'mon. Any show that can make a reference to Benjamin Disraeli funny, has got to have more on the ball than just potty humor.

And to head off the obvious next question, He was a British Prime Minister, the only Jewish Prime Minister the UK has ever had, and had a rather insulting wit about him.

music in every episode huh............
