Can't get enough Futurama

David on Grandmaster Freak

Looks like some people on here were having sacrilegious feelings while reading about David Cohen's new project yesterday. Evil people! After repenting for a while, see what David X. has got to say:
Hello, all!

David X. Cohen here. I just wanted to reassure everyone that even if my new show "Grandmaster Freak & The Furious 15" gets on the air (always a long shot in this business), I will never stop lobbying to bring Futurama back -- unless it does come back, in which case I will stop lobbying for it to come back. This doesn't put any new nails in Futurama's coffin; at the same time, it doesn't pry out any nails that were already there. I guarantee you that if FOX is interested in bringing Futurama back, Matt Groening & I will find a way. In fact, if FOX ends up paying me to do another show, then if anything it might make it more economical for them to bring Futurama back.

The new pilot is an idea I've been working on for over a year. Obviously it's completely different from Futurama, but I am very excited about it. It's based somewhat on my own school years... I grew up in Englewood, New Jersey, in the time and place where the show is set (the early-to-mid 1980's). Englewood was home of Sugar Hill records, where many early rap hits were recorded.
I have long been a rap fan, and especially a fan of Ice Cube, so I approached him to see if he was interested in being involved... and he was. The show is not actually about music; it's about the intertwined daily lives and adventures of the many odd characters in the show. We are not currently planning musical performances in every episode, as the Variety article said, though there will be music when relevant to the episode.

The Variety article leaked out early, hence there were no comments from me or FOX that might have better explained some of it.

If I can quote Matt Groening for a moment: When executives told Matt that they had expected Futurama to be more like the Simpsons, he replied, "It's just
like the Simpsons -- new and original."

I'll try my best to make the same apply here!

Yours,

- DXC
OK, so maybe I was a bit concerned too since I wasn't really into that or any kind of music around the early 80s. But if it turns out to mostly be the backdrop of the series, all is fine. I just hope it will be branded/advertized carefully by FOX in order to not put off the "rap is stupid"-people before even seeing it.
We know who's behind this show and should - if anything - not hold that against Grandmaster Freak in a "it's not Futurama" way. It isn't Futurama, but it's also not aiming at replacing Futurama.

Now doubt Fox will put "From the creator of Futurama" in the promo to increase ratings...

I will watch this show with interest, its good to know that the great X Cohen hasn't given up on futurama for this new venture.
I still want to know if Coolio will be in it though.
SlackJawedMoronOct 23rd 2004, 09:46
I love that man.

And hey, if I can put up with 80's rap in Vice city, I can put up with it here!

Except that I didn't so much 'put up with it' as 'switch to Wave.' Ah, well.
Eyedol7513Oct 23rd 2004, 10:18
More economical... If this show is a hit, bringing back Futurama would possibly bring FOX more money, and we all know that's what they're interested in.

Off topic a bit, I got so pissed when I saw the promo for "The Swan". It looks so freaking gay. And they put this crap on, instead of Futurama.

Oh well, at least David hasn't given up.

I'll be very interested to see who mans the voice acting on this series. C'mon Billy and Jon!
JonOct 23rd 2004, 11:56
I'd love to do voices on the show!
KazzahdraneOct 23rd 2004, 19:58
He made a reference to my "nail in the coffin" comment!

Yes David, I'm a sad fanboy :-p. Anyway, glad to hear he hasn't given up on Futurama, and I for one will definetely be aquiring the pilot episode of the new show through some illegal means. (I ain't waiting months to see it on TV over here, plus I don't have a TV!)

I'm so happy that Mr. Cohen is trying his hardest! He's so great! I'd LOVE it if Billy and the rest of the cast came back! Who else would they get to do the voices? These people are the greatest voice over actors of all time! They make the show fantabulous!

Nice!
I'm looking forward to this - let's hope FOX doesn't ruin a new, innovative show... again.
Concerning Futurama, it's good to see that David will keep fighting.
Maybe some day FOX will realize that Futurama can make lots of money when properly advertised and handled. If they hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate!
FuturamaNerdOct 23rd 2004, 20:37
It's good to know Cohen is still pushing for Futurama! Maybe his new show could possibly draw attention to Futurama. How,I don't know, but we can wish right?
In terms of his new show,I wish him the best and hope that Fox won't cancle/ruin another original idea.
RyanOct 23rd 2004, 23:03
I like the idea of Rough Draft being on board for the animation. And that there will definitely be a person who beatboxes on the crew (David had damn well better get John Dimaggio)
SpecificHeatCapacityOct 24th 2004, 02:21
Hey, what happened to "That Poor Bastard" show? On a side note, if Futurama did come back after all the anchovies on the 25th, David could do both shows, similar to Matt with Futurama and The Simpsons
RobOct 24th 2004, 02:30
Hey, if they cant get new Futurama episodes back on the air...how about doing a Futurama Movie? That seems to be the way a lot of TV shows go these days anyway. And I, for one, would L O V E to see that!
TheDrainpipeOct 24th 2004, 03:24
From what little I've read, I think David Cohen's new show could be great (well, given the obvious talent involved, how could it not be?). I'll admit, when I first the premise it seemed like a retread of the sixth season of "Married...With Children" (in which Bud Bundy tried to reinvent himself as streetwise rapper "Grandmaster B"), but David's follow-up comments here are reassuring.

I think it's great that David ain't giving up on Futurama...and if it never comes back, I hope the fans don't get all anal and vindictive on "Grandmaster Freak." Who knows? Maybe we'll all fall in love with "GF" and Fox will cancel prematurely and rip our hearts to shreds, again. Sorry if I just jinxed you, David...

ONE DAY, FOX IS DOOMED!!!!!!!!!!!!
fydiousOct 24th 2004, 09:21
thankfully that musical number in every ep was nonsense. thats what made the show sound like it would suck to me. musical numbers are the largest wastes of time.
unknownOct 24th 2004, 12:22
can't they just return futuram doesn't fox notise the fans like me... BRING BACK FUTURAMA!
ChrisDOct 24th 2004, 13:27
Kind of off topic, but Maurice LaMarche (voice of Kif, Morbo, Calculon, and other characters) and Phil Hendrie (voice of everyone in the Waterfall family) both do voices in Team America:World Police. LaMarche voices Alec Baldwin and Hendrie voices I.N.T.E.L.L.I.G.E.N.C.E. However, I don't recommend taking anyone under 17 to see the movie (some pretty graphic puppet gore, puppet sex, and profanity).

Back on topic, bravo to Mr. Cohen for not giving up on Futurama. It really goes a long way towards explaining the quality of the show that the people who worked on it love it every bit as much as obsessive fans like us nerds.

Dear Santa,
How have you been? Well christmas is upon us again, and this year I ask only one thing... A miracle.

As you know Futurama was cancelled by the evil goblins at the Fox network, if possible can you show them compassion... maybe make thier hearts grow three times in size?

I have been extremely good this year, well except for that crippled guy but that wasn't entirely my fault but I won't go into it as you probably already saw it anyway... it'd be cool if you could do this for me Mr Nicolas.

Man, at first I thought this show wasn't going to be very good, but thanks to his comments, I'm casualy optimistic. This show sounds very interesting, and I agree that Jon would be perfect in it.

On another note, BRING BACK FUTURAMA DAMMIT!!!

Good luck, Dave.

The grandmasterfreak website is great.
I was especially amused by the following (even though it is incorrect):

"He is a graduate of the Berkeley postgraduate program, where he recieved a Ph.D. in Computer Studies and Mathmatics. this is an impressive feat, considering this program only has about 50 graduates per year. That means that out of the 6 billion on earth, divided by the average human lifespan on earth of 60 years, only 1/500000000 people can do this. The is way better than winning even the least fair lottery."

After reading the DXC article, i am resured. Now theres still a chance futurama might come back!
BlythyOct 25th 2004, 21:26
So thats where coolio will go.
MKTaiOct 25th 2004, 23:11
David has given me hope that Futurama will return. I really do hope it's not false hope...Go Futurama!
BoxyRobotOct 26th 2004, 01:58
David wouldn't keep telling us to keep the faith if there were no chance of a comeback... right?
mazuioOct 26th 2004, 05:08
Dave is such a nice guy. I can't wait for his new show.
unknownOct 26th 2004, 07:47

I wonder whats going to get the 8pm spot once The Simpsons is "over"? Thats the best time to get Futurama back. Hell even now is.. If Grandmaster Freak lasts and gets picked up by fox for that matter t'ill 2009, maybe it will be headlining and Futurama afterwards :D or perferrably vice-versa..

It would be cool to see Billy and Jon doing Grandmaster Freak. And all the old cast of Futurama. Im sure if Billy gets casted for Grandmaster Freak, it will be all the rage...

Im hoping Grandmaster Freak gets picked up by Fox. If not I might use for something else. Ive probably just jinxed myself by posting the url here but meh!!
JoeNov 1st 2004, 22:06
strangely enough, the url didnt show up its grandmasterfreak.net
ilovemymommyNov 21st 2004, 00:25

This is a pretty smart idea, rap is still selling, and rap is still funny to laff at. I love metal, but I think metal would be too hard to create a show around. I can't wait until they parody the fat boys.

"noticably F. A. T. rewind the track.
hebebewhehbhehehbhhwhhebwwhe."
something like that, it's been months since i've watched futurama.
