Talk about Futurama Direct to DVD

Good news, everyone?

Over the last week, several sources from within the animation business have indicated to us that there is renewed talk at FOX about bringing fresh Futurama content directly to DVD. We corroborated this with other sources close to the show before publishing the information.

The talk is of course still in a preliminary stage. Options reported to us include one or more Futurama movies in case of a go-ahead.

Even though Futurama is not sure to return and the likelihood of its return is currently unknown, this is the first time in the past few years that we have heard of Futurama being discussed at the upper levels of FOX. They'll likely have a good look at the sales of the upcoming Futurama Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection.

As soon as we get more information on the Direct to DVD story, we'll let you know right here.

That would be so cool! Let's hope it happens.
LukeMay 18th 2005, 19:34
Sounds good, PROVIDED they bring back the orignal writing staff!
CazMay 18th 2005, 20:54
Everyone get out there and buy those DVDs!!!
scummbuddyMay 18th 2005, 20:59

VenusMay 18th 2005, 21:22
Fangasm commencing in three...two...one...
PhillMay 18th 2005, 21:32
Fresh Futurama, that would be great
ZmithyMay 18th 2005, 21:33
The dvd looks like a great idea for birthday presents. I'm buying in bulk :).

The really nice thing about this rumour is the reliable sources- still, early days...
jamdav86May 18th 2005, 21:56
Any chance of naming the sources?
[-mArc-]May 18th 2005, 22:00
Re writing staff: Bringing back the writing staff won't be a big problem really. You don't really need all the writers back from Futurama for a movie.

Re sources: I can't give out names at the moment really. But we've been pretty careful with theis news item and didn't publish on the first sight of a rumour. Think we've also shown to be trustable in the past on those things.
pansenkillerfromgermanyMay 18th 2005, 22:30
Yeah new Futurama episodes would be great!
I think this is a great chance to show FOX that they still could make money with futurama so that they perhaps think about renew futurama. that would be really fantastic.

Like always: sorry for my bad english :-)
T-VeronicaMay 18th 2005, 22:42
HELL YEAH!! I certainly hope they decide to go through with this, I'll definitely buy as many DVDs as it takes to make this happen! <insert fangirlish squeal>
BanditRulerMay 18th 2005, 23:03
Heaven.... it's pure heaven. You can guarantee I will be invading all their stocks at Best Buy, prepare for a sell-out!!

CharlesMay 18th 2005, 23:55
You guys should post addresses to the Fox Execs and anyone else who has some pull with this so letters can be written to them supporting new episodes or a movie.
PandaMay 19th 2005, 00:49
Great..ill be picking up my copie of the new futurama dvd is futrama came back it would be the best thing in the whole world even better than marmalade on toast....
FuturamaNerdMay 19th 2005, 01:21
Yes!!! Believing the thread and posting in it wasn't for nothing!!!!! Thank god there is some talk about new Futurama stuff. Lets all cross our fingers!
slyMay 19th 2005, 01:23
hmmm...Maybe that bender apperance on Simpsons was a little hint, by Matt ;)
Eyedol7513May 19th 2005, 01:54
I definately agree with you, #2.
johanleyMay 19th 2005, 02:06
This flimsy hope is sadly the best Futurama related news we've had since before February 2002. Nevertheless, I'll take it.

Commencing blind hope...
ExTwisTMay 19th 2005, 02:56
I am glad to hear this great news!!! I must buy more copys of DVDs.

I am having my fingers crossed.
JonMay 19th 2005, 03:22
this statement I'm about to make is purely a guess, and not an actual fact or anything.
But, it would make sense that maybe they'll air 4 episodes on cartoon network, that all link together. kind of how they did with that star wars animated thing.
then just release it as an uncut movie.
seems possible, at least. considering ive never really heard of a tv show that just has a straight to video movie aside from scooby doo in the last 10 years.
JoeMay 19th 2005, 03:57
I was thinking that since family guy came back the ratings must be good for fox to start thinking about futurama again. But the little appearance by bender on the simpsons a few weeks back changes that since I know it takes a while to make a simpsons episode..
Although I could be wrong on the appearance by bender, it could have just been something by matt to show that he still has hope for a return of futurama...
None the less I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of monster robot maniac fun collection.
MitchMay 19th 2005, 04:31
if its true (which im praying it is) im looking for my check book now lol
NickMay 19th 2005, 05:44
This sounds so odd-- Futurama is an expensive show to produce, why wouldn't FOX air it?

Perhaps they could air it in a summer season, or some other sort of mid-season replacement. There are plenty of times when there is nothing but crap on FOX.

It just seems really odd that FOX would spend all that money and not show it on TV, especially when having it on TV is probably the best way to boost DVD sales.

Still, though, I hope it's true either way.
Officer1BDIMay 19th 2005, 06:07
Oh man, please let it be true.... As long as we get the main voice actors back I will be a happy, happy Futurama fan. Z8D

I'd actually prefer a movie (or three) over a set of new episodes, because I think this is one of the few shows that has enough depth to create a successful feature-length DVD, and I'd love to see what the writers would come up with. Plus, a movie would be long enough to tie up a number of loose ends while throwing new twists our way.

Well, regardless, I'm still buying Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection.
EndocromMay 19th 2005, 07:38
I'd buy that for a dollar... well, I'd spend much more than a DOLLAR. (within reason)
Zibumorph9000May 19th 2005, 09:34
I am posting this from the future and hoping that it doesn't fall on deaf ears. We now know that the continuation of Futurama is the only thing that would have prevented the downfall of our society in 2078, which will begin with an invasion from the planet Spatulon 5. A series of financial crises will wreak havoc on the planet, followed by a shortage of brief underpants. Only by the continuence of Futurama can civillization as we know it be saved. Please alert the folks at FOX that new content MUST be produced to save our fair planet. Thank you.

I prefer a movie (or however many) over a new series too. It just seemed that in the 4th season it was starting to make its downfall and I hate to say this guys but if I were from Fox I woulda cancelled it too.
Look how much ppl hate the simpsons now because of its continuation. Thank god it was cancelled.

Anyway, this is probably going to get flamed and all but I hope there are others who can see where Im coming from.

A movie would be the best way for Futurama to tie up its loose ends.
idontgiveoutmynameMay 19th 2005, 10:34
yah, I think we see where you come from, but even after The Simpsons first started going down hill it still managed to give us some gold. 4 seasons to cancel Futurama was way too early, since they have so much more to explore in the Futurama universe compared to the simpsons universe, and the Simpsons managed beyond 8 seasons before it started downhill.
lawoftheclawMay 19th 2005, 16:03
as for the dvd-sales:
Finally I'll become a crafty consumer! Hello...? I take eight!!!
BrianMay 19th 2005, 17:30
My dream is coming true! I always dreamt of a movie or fresh episodes! Fox make a movie and I'll sacrafice my older brother! The thing is I already have seen new episodes.....every night......and I'm in them.........I dream about Futurama........Every night.:|
BrianMay 19th 2005, 17:33
The day this happens will be know as FUTURAMA DAY
NutcaseyMay 19th 2005, 17:33
Please let it be true!
SerineMay 19th 2005, 19:42
If they don't do this, then they can bite my shiny metal ass! Let's hope they bring back futurama, and straight to DVD is fine by me, it means no commercials.
benderloverMay 19th 2005, 20:29
If this isn't ture I'm suing fox!!!!
ScottOMay 19th 2005, 22:28
Don't get your hopes up, losers.
JeremyFeinMay 19th 2005, 22:39
Well If Family guy came back because of DVD sales....then bring back futurama and cancel King of the Hill and AMerican DAD.

It's not working out and too much Seth McFarlane is a bad thing.
icweinerMay 19th 2005, 22:45
I hope this is true. It better be. I'm going to buy maybe at least 5 of the Robot DVDs.
BarryMay 19th 2005, 23:30
As much as Fox is touting its new animated Sunday night lineup, you'd think they'd be more than willing to fit Futurama in there. They're listing "Animation Encores" for the coming Fall and Spring lineups - who knows what that means - and a probably crappy non-animated show called "The War at Home" which is going to try to be a MitM ripoff with slightly older kids. My recommendation: Ditch TWaH after the 13 episode order runs out, and replace it with Futurama, right after The Simpsons!
keithMay 20th 2005, 00:56
I really wish Futurama would come back on the air because the simpsons r getting boring and i got all seasons that r currently out and i want more! lol well id be nice if id come back!!!!!!!! :)
dnvillalpandoMay 20th 2005, 01:34
Season 4 was going downhill???? Whaaaaaa???

HELL NO! Season 4 was the best of the 4 seasons. Shows like Obsoletely Fabulous, The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings, The Farnsworth Parabox, Where no Fan Has Gone Before, Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles, Love and Rocket are EASILY among the best of the entire series.

Futurama was a show that just got better and better.

This is the BEST news I've had in almost a year!

david
squishy-fishMay 20th 2005, 01:59
Let us now bow our heads and pray.
RichardMay 20th 2005, 02:57
I agree with whoever said season 4 was starting to go downhill, although there were some fantastic episodes, there were some duds (300 Big Boys, Spanish Fry, etc.). And after I've seen what happened after Family Guy came back from being gone for a few years (2 of the 3 new FG episodes were awful), I'm worried what would happen with new Futurama episodes. Despite all of that, I'm very excited at the idea of new episodes, even if there's a chance they won't be that good, I know they still had many unused ideas and I have to see what they have left. (I'd even accept bad episodes ;))
BrianMay 20th 2005, 02:57
I was gonna buy a Family Guy box set....but screw it I'm getting Futurama! Family Guy is funny but no where near as funny as Futurama! This is the best news ever after Futurama came on! I can't wait! I'm so gonna throw a "Futurama's Return Home" Party the day this Direct DVD series starts with it's firs dAy!
futuramaloverMay 20th 2005, 03:28
first off:

season 4 downhill......... wtf are you on
futurama only gets better with age

second i want another season then movies
a new season to get non nerds like us interested

then we hit em with the movie

ticket sales+ mechandise+ dvd sales

alexMay 20th 2005, 05:05
wow dont get my hopes up... u dont know how much i love this show and how happy i would b if it came back.. i would probally jump around the room goin crazy lol... o well i hope some more good news comes soon :-)
AdamJGiessMay 20th 2005, 05:32
I approve of this decision.
waffyMay 20th 2005, 05:38
I personally thought the series generally got better with each new season. At least, I liked each next season more and more.

Anyway, this is awesome news. I'm really really hoping something good comes out of it. If it turns out to be a flop... then that will be quite the disappointment.
bigwolleyMay 20th 2005, 06:37
We can all thank the continuously high ratings it gets on [adult swim] and the DVD sales for this awesome news! *crosses fingers* Here's hoping!
r0seMay 20th 2005, 06:54
fresh futurama will be great!
why did they axe the show in the first place when there are many futurama fans out there
turkinaaMay 20th 2005, 06:56
basing it on sales for the new dvd is stupid. its not new. look at the sales of the 4 volumes and ratings on adult swim. fox loves to mess things up. they just don't think.

No offence or anything but the people who think Futurama only got better are probably the losers who still watch the simpsons. The first 2 seasons were amazingly good, the third season had a few bad eps but sesaon 4 just had too many bad eps to be considered good. Spanish Fry, 300 Big Boys, Obsoletely Fabulous.. terrible.

Season one: 8/10
Season 2: 9/10
Season 3: 7/10
Sesaon 4: (although holds my fav ep the sting) 6/10
waffyMay 20th 2005, 13:14
"No offence or anything but the people who think Futurama only got better are probably the losers who still watch the simpsons"

Actually, nope. :P I just happen to greatly enjoy the more story-driven elements of the later episodes, but I guess perhaps you're not capable of understanding that other people have different tastes than you. Also, seasons 2 and 3 had their own mediocre episodes, you know... :/
goodnewsMay 20th 2005, 14:24
checked amazon.co.uk the new Futurama Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collectio is out on the 30th of may in the uk.

to #55: 300 Big Boys is one of my all time favorite episodes, different strokes for different folks.
nameMay 20th 2005, 15:45
Waffy, I realise season 2 had its flaws. I too liked the story driven episodes of season 4 but there were hardly any jokes and not as sci-fyee as the others.

Yea I guess I just have a different taste to all you guys.

No harm intended with my posts.
MitchMay 20th 2005, 16:45
i can be happier with fox's fall schedule. malcom and arrested devlopemtn off sunday night and hopefully animation encores or war at home will get dropped and replaced with futurama.
fydiousMay 20th 2005, 19:13
all the episodes of family guy are awful. it shouldn't have been made and it shouldn't have been brought back.
CeliaMay 20th 2005, 19:43
How do they know if the dvds are selling?

also, I have an idea for a movie. It involves a fry/leela wedding, zoidburg and a bunch of stuff, maybe I should write a ff......
gloriousgoldenassMay 20th 2005, 21:55
EEEEE!!! Oh God, I hope it happens.
pandaMay 20th 2005, 22:37
i dont agree with #61 family guy is not awful...and a few other people are saying that fuurama went downhill..what the hell..i thought season 4 was f**king great
nameaddresswitheldMay 21st 2005, 02:19
According to Billy West's website forum, it appears that David X has been in contact with fox execs and they seem very interested in doing 3 DVD movies... so it's not just an idle rumor. Billy says Mr. Cohen was "very jazzed".
So am I!
charlesMay 21st 2005, 02:59
look it, everyone here seems to be futurama fans, so why bicker. so yes season 4 could have been more sci-fi oriented, but there were still some very good episodes and besides, the writers have had a ton of time to think of stuff to do.
more futurama is always a good thing
TonyMay 21st 2005, 03:34
Yay, a pogo stick!

the simpsons is stale
american dad is total %$^#
family guy is dumb
futurama is.... incredible
MorbowillkillyouallMay 21st 2005, 05:31
I don't need to tell all of you to go out and buy as many dvds as possible. We must get the ball rolling because I will eat the all of you MORBO DEMANDS AS SUCH. HIS WORDS HAVE BEEN SPOKEN.
RichardMay 21st 2005, 08:08
To be fair, "300 Big Boys" had two good parts. Fry reaching his higher state of conscience after 100 cups of coffee, and Dwight spending his penny on many shares of amazon.com.

"Ah, a risk taker! That's my boy"
slyMay 21st 2005, 08:38
ya when fry drank the 100th coffe cup, and reached his ultimate enlightment type idea, was IMO one of the best moments in the series, sort of like in the simpsons Bart The daredevil home almost making the jump, these moments have been with me for years!
JeffbotMay 21st 2005, 10:44
Please, God, let this be true.
TheLight6May 21st 2005, 12:37
What needs to be done if Futurama is put back air is a 2 parter. You could it at the begining of the new season so more people will watch it (though the fact that it's a 2 parter would have to be advitised) or you could do it at the end of the seasons with the last episode being a cliffhanger so they will have to do another season so we can find out what happens. I go with the later chice of making Fox make another season after they make a new one to finish off a cliffhanger.
mrderpMay 21st 2005, 14:52
i would buy a DVD with new content, but there is no way i would buy that maniac monster crap just based on the unfounded notion that its sales MIGHT influence the new DVD

and by the way, if you honestly don't think family guy is funny, you have no sense of humor
skynyrd45May 21st 2005, 21:29
I loved season 4! It is my favorite out of the all the seasons. I really hope they bring out some new Futurama, that would be awesome!
boboMay 22nd 2005, 03:29
fox should cancel that simpsons and koth they both suck very badly. They have run out of ideas for the simpsons.
ChazMay 22nd 2005, 07:35
You really missed the mark #29... Season four-I thought-was the smartest and most mature in both story and animation of the seasons.
RichardMay 22nd 2005, 10:03
Perhaps, but they just weren't as funny as the older episodes.
Ecco1980May 22nd 2005, 19:57
I AM SO EXCITED!! My prayers, wishes, and numerous letters to FOX are finally being answered! Yippee! I can just see it now: for the 1st movie Fry and Leela can get together, for the 2nd movie they can get married, and for the 3rd movie they can have a baby! A be so adorable! Thank you so much, FOX, for keeping our wonderful "Futurama" alive! Now we can all go "back to the future!" Woo hoo!!! :)
MiaMay 22nd 2005, 21:23
I bought season 1-2-3-4 I would buy ALL of the new ones without having second thoughts.
jo3May 23rd 2005, 01:46
oh god yes
riotMay 23rd 2005, 03:13
Futurama is the stuff. Me and my friends watch it all the time on cartoon network, even though it is reruns. Some new shows would be great even if we have to buy them.
snowpuffMay 23rd 2005, 03:54
Hey Fox execs,

That's an interesting idea to do a few movies direct to DVD.

But let me explain why you should broadcast these first. The practical reality is the movies will immediately be swarmed on the internet. I'm not condoning it, that just's where the industry is right now.

It's of some debate whether or not such an occurence would drive sales or decrease them. I believe it can happen both ways. Be that as it may, you might as well produce projects that take advantage of broadcast as well as direct sales. I'm not sure three movies make as much sense as greenlighting a new season, negotiating with Cartoon Network for broadcast and then following with DVD sales.

Sincerely,

Snowpuff
GregMay 23rd 2005, 05:26
Where can I buy new Futurama? I want it!!!!
tweaqMay 23rd 2005, 05:58
^^ i agree. thats what i was thinking, once the war at home bombs, they could replace it with futurama. especially after the simpsons it would get more views (or even more after american dad, or family guy) and it wouldn't get raped by football again. but straight to dvd is cool too, as long as it is the same peepz. GO, COHEN, GO.
SerendipityMay 23rd 2005, 06:44
I think that's a fantastic idea. I really hope this will go ahead. I won't be able to survive without more episodes!

And I agree with Jeremy Fein - King of the Hill is the worst animation series ever.
JOhnMay 23rd 2005, 07:20
I *LOVE* Futurama! I hope Fox does write new episodes! Go Fox!
spishakMay 23rd 2005, 08:01
I heartily endorse this event or product
Ecco1980May 23rd 2005, 15:50
I think it would be a good idea for FOX to begin showing Futurama's 4 seasons on its network to anticipate the 3 new Futurama movies they are talking about producing. For those people that don't have satellite of cable, this would be great to bring the show back on network, as not everyone can get to watch the reruns on [adult swim] on Cartoon Network. This way, FOX can get old and new Futurama fans all excited and lead up to the new movies and/or new Futurama season next year! Just think, if FOX starts one Futurama episode per week on its "Animation Domination" slot (instead of showing 2 Simpsons episodes they can plug in a Futurama one) and they'll have plenty time to go through all 4 seasons leading up to new Futurama movies and/or episodes!

Let's all go "back to the future" with Fry, Bender, and Leela!! Now if I may quote Zoidberg: Hooray!
nullMay 23rd 2005, 17:04
I would absolutely love to see some more Futurama, anywhere, anyhow, anytime.

KimberlyMay 24th 2005, 02:44
"300 Big Boys" was an excellent episode. I think it ranks somewhere in the top 72! ;)
(continued)
KimberlyMay 24th 2005, 02:48

Seriously, it was a great episode. So was "Spanish Fry"

The only episode I didn't like was. . . Hmm, I can't think of a single episode I don't like. It's a lot like Pink Floyd - they never produced a bad track, it's just that their good stuff is just "meh" compared to their really stellar stuff. It's much better than anything anyone else has to offer, but compared to say "Comfortably Numb" or "Welcome to the Machine" the song "See Saw" is downright plain by comparison.

Or to borrow Meg's situation from Family Guy: If you stand next to someone reallyreally ugly, you look like a knockout by comparison, only it's reversed. Next to " The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" an episode like "Spanish Fry" is plain by comparison. . . but still far better than say, any "American Idol" episodes.
ElizabethMay 24th 2005, 05:57
If they can spend money on bring back 'Family Guy' again, why not bring back 'Futurama,' a show which is ten times funnier? Come on, FOX, you know you want to corner the market on prime-time cartoons!
handscraftersMay 24th 2005, 07:42
It's interesting to note that Fox released DVDs of the unaired "Wonderfalls" series after axing it 4 episodes in... and made a bundle with a best-selling DVD set.
I wonder if they make more money from DVD sales of shows than they'd make by airing them?
RichardMay 25th 2005, 07:16
Not sure how Pink Floyd got brought into this, but I'd just like to say they are my favorite band ;). But sure, "Spanish Fry" isn't horrible, I just expect more from them. And I think it's ok for a fan to admit that.
ShaBuBuMay 25th 2005, 10:31
All the episodes were very good. Just that the first 2-3 seasons (imo) were exceptionally good. I still liked season 4 though.

Some people are saying they would want the movies to be about Fry and Leela in love.

*shudder*

for the love of god please do not do the love stories.
I really hated Kif and Amy's love story.. I mean it wsa a joke on the titanic ep and shoulda been kept that way.

The Leela and Fry one was a better love story but Fry just never got the hint. I think the movie would be better off without a love plot. Some love in it would be good but not a whole story around Fry and leelas marriage or kid or whatever. Hey what would Fry and Leelas kid be like...

Rabbi Zoidberg-- I miss you!
