Futurama Direct-to-Video Greenlit?

Update by [-mArc-]:
Due to some communication hiccup within CGEF, the following had been posted without all information attached. Most importantly, our latest information from David X. Cohen is that the movie(s) have NOT been greenlit yet. So, take what Billy says as a good sign, but not neccessarily as the final word on it.

It seems that FOX has finally given the Futurama Direct-to-Video the green light. In the first of IGN's exclusive Video Blogs direct from San Diego's Comic-Con International, voice actor Billy West (Fry, Zoidberg, the Professor, and many more voices for many more shows) revealed to us that a brand-new direct-to-video Futurama movie has been greenlit. There is also an option on a second dvd.

Thanks to IGN for this exclusive information. The information has not yet been confirmed by Matt Groening or FOX itself, so let's just keep hoping

Excellent! I've been waiting for this news for years.

I like DrZizzle's the best. I also won't fully accepting this until Groening, Cohen, or Fox announces it. But until then, I'll do the hustle...or not.

Sorry, I know this is unrelated, but there is a site called , could people please sign it. I know you might have reservations about these petitions, but it will only take a second. I know the movie might bring it back as well, but if fox decides not to then it will be good that this preperation was made. Once again, please, it will only take about a minute of your day. Thanks again.

It is not very famous in the netherlands.. but that's just because nobody knows Futurama...

I really really reeeaaallllyyy hope that this is true..
i just readed it on ignpc.com ( )

and i hoped to find more info about this here... but still.. the same information...

owww got.. this is just the one thing i want in my life...
maeJul 19th 2005, 02:13
# 60, I thought the Futurama movie was already written and Matt Groening just needed the money from FOX to produce it. FOX definately needs to bring back Futurama. Arrested Developement is moving to a new night so Futurama could take its place or they could just cancel American Dad because it isn't as funny as Family Guy.
StarriahJul 19th 2005, 02:58
I really hope this is true, unlike that rumor awhile ago that turned out to be a hoax! I'm just worried if the sells would be good enough to start the series again. That would be great. The websites I've been on confirmed the return. I hope the people that went to Comic Con are telling the truth about Matt Groening announcing the return of Futurama in a DVD movie.

It may return with another season of Fox in one or two years from now, which will be great! My guess is that it will take American Dad's place. To be honest, I like American Dad a little, but not as much as Futurama and I think it's going to be cancled soon.
jjtheocJul 19th 2005, 03:27
I'm cautiously optimistic for Futurama's future too...

I'm sure it isn't lost on Fox that if they produce one more full season, they'd have enough to syndicate the show too, another lucrative source of revenue, something which would work considering how well it's done over time on Adult Swim. So yeah, the movie's a great sign they're giving this some more thought, and considering Family Guy's performance this summer (outrating the ratings The OC was getting during the regular season, for instance) there might be some hope yet!

DamitolJul 19th 2005, 19:01
There was a time when my three favorite shows on TV, Futurama, Farscape and Firefly - all starting with "F" due to some strange alignment of the planets - were all cancelled within months of each other, and my TV became more of a DVD monitor than anything else.

Farscape got it's miniseries, Firefly has the Big Damn Movie coming out in 73 days and now this. Even though it's confirmed then not confirmed after all, it is clear that something is very close to happening with Futurama post-cancellation - and life is good. Very, very good.
DevDictJul 20th 2005, 00:26
I don't even know what to make of it.
If it's true...

ARRISARRISJul 20th 2005, 21:03
...i so hope this news is true, here in England until Dr Who recently returned Futurama was the only programme id go out of my way to record on first showing, then i had to get the DVD sets, i agree that Futurama was never bad, but i think it was really starting to rock at the point of cancellation...
KimberlyJul 20th 2005, 22:29
#78 by donald-
I second JeremyFein - Don't try to make me choose. Without any one of the characters Futurama just wouldn't have been.
KimberlyJul 21st 2005, 01:04
FOX execs: if you bring Futurama back to TELEVISION I promise to watch at least one of your crappy "reality" shows - every week.

Deal?
KimberlyJul 21st 2005, 03:48
JeremyFein>
Heck, I'd agree to watch Pinhead, er I mean Paris Hilton's "Slutty Life" er I mean "Simple Life" in exchange for getting Futurama back on the air. THAT is the kind of extreme I am willing to go to!
donaldJul 21st 2005, 04:56
i like all the futurama character but i think bender fry and zoidberg are the funniest of the planet express crew
konshussJul 21st 2005, 05:47
i sure as hell hope this dvd happens.

i feel like i've been left hanging concerning at least one storyline... gee, i wonder which one that was.
donaldJul 21st 2005, 16:07
if you guys dont need to make fun of fox to make yourself feel better ps a good thing it would be if tbs/adult swim bought the contract
konshussJul 21st 2005, 16:41
it's pretty simple. if this dvd of a MOVIE version of futurama does well (and it will, because the seasons have sold incredibly well) Fox will have no more excuses to keep this off the air.

family guy, which can be argued as being a more risque show made its way back and they didn't even have to put out a movie. of course futurama will be back.

oh, and rupert murdoch wears diapers. really shitty diapers. and fox news is a hypocritical joke that needs futurama on the air to keep some sort of balance between the relevent and the totally absurd. you know which are which.

i feel better.
donaldJul 21st 2005, 17:00
there going to make three movies and then air another season i hope they release them straight to dvd
GnadeJul 21st 2005, 18:29
JeremyFein,
Bernie Mac isn't cancelled so you're getting close to having to watch that list of shows of yours
scummbuddyJul 21st 2005, 19:10
Titus was a great show. Thats a show that shouldn't have been cancelled.

I can't wait to hear more confirmation on this possible first DVD. To hear all you convention go-ers say that Matt stated they were coming is great, but I need solid proof, and I'm sure you do too.
wantFrywiththatJul 21st 2005, 20:26
Oh, I desperately want to believe that, so I do.

Really, though, I want confirmation before I get my little hopes up.
donaldJul 22nd 2005, 01:38
there never bringing it back on air if you keep ######### about fox being stupid first of all you praised the idea now that they ok it you find little things to whine about plus straight to dvd is good
DrZizzleJul 22nd 2005, 04:19
If Futurama does come back because of the movie, then I hope that they ATLEAST get to their 200th episode. Then futurama fans could have a wide selection of episodes to choose from to watch. Preferably, I hope it goes on to around 400 episodes, and it stays as good as it has been for the past four years. Well hell, if it remains as good as at the start why not forever?!!!!!!
lostinseganetJul 22nd 2005, 05:59
I hope they make each movie 3 hours long.
hugecookieJul 22nd 2005, 12:07
hey guyz wats a DVD??///
ScruffysPAJul 22nd 2005, 14:36
Altho i feel like a trator for saying this (altho i do rele wnt the show back) i dont believe this dvd movie is such a good idea:
1. There will only be a limited amount of sales coz the public wont be that intrested.
2. Movies of tv shows are always dissapointing, and i dont think a movie can ever capture the magic of the series

and also lets not celebrate untill weve heard from david x, matt or Fox. Dont expect much then u wont be dissapointed
donaldJul 22nd 2005, 15:59
i 100% sure about the movie
TsumikiJul 22nd 2005, 21:28
at the end of the day a dvd movie would be a brilliant idea. But at the end of the day its FOX and FOX alone who can bring it back so stop whining and stop going on about how crappy FOX are and just deal with it!
anneJul 22nd 2005, 22:58
do the bender c'mon: uhmmm ahhh uhmmmm ahhhh move it!
smilingbagJul 22nd 2005, 23:16
Without the constraints of the FCC will we get to see Bender do, say and abuse the English language more than we ever have before? Will Lela and Amy finally bare all? Will we get to see what Zoidberg keeps under his shell? The mind reels with possibilities...
KimberlyJul 23rd 2005, 00:56
re: foul-mouthed Bender>

We don't need Futurama to be more crass than it is. I think it has the perfect balance of low-brow humor (farting, beer-guzzling, decadant robots, a self-indulged skirt-wearing wannabe-ladies'-man space captain Branigan, etc.) and intellectual humor (physics, math, and computer jokes, not to mention sometimes not-so-obvious puns). To mess with that humor by making it more low-brow would be to ruin the show.

There already exists Family Guy and South Park for that. Groening hit on a great thing when he came up with Futurama, and even though it's not like The Simpsons (if it were it'd be called The Simpsons) it can reach a wide audience if only Fox were to give it a chance. It does very well on Adult Swim, but seriously, how many people who didn't LOOK for Futurama heard about it? I never saw it promoted on any other cable channels, ever. It pretty much spread by word of mouth and this web site (thanks, mods!).

We owe the admins of this site a debt of gratitude for playing no small part in keeping Futurama alive, even if it's "only" a series of direct-to-DVD productions.
StarfishChrisJul 23rd 2005, 01:37
Am I the only one who wonders what they're going to put in this movie? One big adventure or lots of small ones? Any conclusion to _that_ storyline? Or even - gasp - a new character! These comments are decidedly lacking in it (or maybe it's all happening at PEEL...) And with widescreen we can see more great acting from Zoidberg in the peripheral area. The possibilities...

re: foul-mouthed Bender. I expect they'll keep the balance of the series and limit it to one every 20 minutes or so. Either that, or they use them all up in one scene. ;) Any more just because they can would ruin it - though I'm happy for them to make a 'director's cut' of eps like Spanish Fry!
donaldJul 23rd 2005, 04:50
mom is probly the villian ever notice fry bender and leela are very developed at the end
scummbuddyJul 23rd 2005, 06:32
I doubt that the movies would be in 16:9 aspect ratio. I would think that it would be standard television ratio.

I would also think that Adult Swim would do, like they've done before, devote a whole night to a movie. They've shown an Inu Yasha movie on a saturday night, which was cool, because they still played the futurama fo the saturday night, then the movie.
RichardJul 23rd 2005, 08:33
Re: StarfishChris

I also have wondered about the content of the DVD movie. I've always loved this show for it's great mix of humor and science fiction (and humorous science-fiction). Now with a 90 minute movie, just imagine what they could do with a great sci-fi plot. (Just look at what they've done in 22 minutes at a time - Parasites Lost, Roswell that Ends Well, Godfellas, Jurassic Bark, The Why of Fry, The Sting, Farnsworth's Parabox and more I'm sure)

I just hope it doesn't revolve around Leela and Fry getting together, that just...wouldn't be fun.
OtisPJivefunkJul 23rd 2005, 13:32
I just hope the movie has something to do with Zapp putting the universe in jeopardy while everyone else is trying to save it with him being completely oblivious to everything but himself and Leela...
donaldJul 23rd 2005, 19:20

#99 Matt stated a while back that he was only going to do 365 Simpsons episodes, so I think he'll only do that amount for Futurama. But who knows...
tomisagothJul 24th 2005, 11:32
#100 I don't think each Futurama movie will be 3 hours long because most movies are 1 hour and a half long, and FOX does n't like Futurama much.
tomisagothJul 24th 2005, 11:37
#108 it was also advertised by magazines, promo posters, and a promo lucky bag, the lucky bags are very rare though.
donaldJul 24th 2005, 16:41
what 2 dvd sets should i get first
JettJul 24th 2005, 17:47
I'm guessing the movie would be around one hour and ten minutes long. An average episode is only really twenty-two minutes long, and basicially this movie is going to be as long as three or four episodes of Futurama.

Also, I think the release date would be around June of next year, to be honest. It will take a while, but it's not going to take as much time an average movie would.

The price will probably be as much as one regular movie DVD.

StarfishChrisJul 25th 2005, 21:04
"I just hope it doesn't revolve around Leela and Fry getting together, that just...wouldn't be fun."
I don't see how they could do it satisfactorily in a movie. Touched upon, yes, but develop it in the series, please.

#113 (OtisPJivefunk)
You can be almost certain of that!

#124
Personally I think it would be a little longer - 80 minutes or so. Without looking to Family Guy for comparisons... it'll be interesting to see what they do with their 80 minutes.

#136
Don't they get a lot of it anyway? ;)

donald: Get seasons 1 and 3.
BrainJul 25th 2005, 22:04
I hope it IS about Fry + Leela.Cause it can't just end with that then a movie were they think there JUST freinds. That would suck!
DrZizzleJul 26th 2005, 02:13
I think it would be cool to see fry and leela get together because it seemed they would. Maybe it would work if they are together in the movie, but then they realize(or more leela does because Fry doesn't realize anything) that their relationship gets in the way of there work, and then it has some sappy ending where Leela says she loves Fry, but that it just won't work or something. I don't know maybe that is to sappy.
WierdJul 26th 2005, 04:49
It's probably going to have some kind of mention of the Fry and Leela relation, but it will still be like a regular episode, except with a way better plot. I don't know, nor do any of us know right now. I do like some plots with their relationship, but sometimes it just goes over my limit, you know? Every now and then it should have a Fry and Leela relationship plot, but not like the fourth season DVD! That was crazy! I'm talking about the third season.
