The CGEF Restoration Project

With the new season coming up on August 3, I have decided to move forward with the restoration project I started three years ago with some of my students. I tasked them with taking the code from the old CGEF and porting it into Next.js instead. The old code was Perl, which was only maintainable by our own tech god [-mArc-], who is no longer actively maintaining the site. I have replaced him with mARC 7G, who will now be taking on the role of lead technical contributor in his place!

In any case, first of all, a shoutout to Ortwin, Bo, Robbe, and Yaseen (who sadly passed away a year after completing his project). They helped me in a huge way by creating the first prototype. Since then, it has been lying on my hard drive doing nothing. Then I realized that I could use AI to fill in the missing gaps, so, full disclosure, I used Claude Code to finish up what they started. I know a lot of people dislike the use of AI, but without it, I would not have been able to accomplish this feat. The usage of AI is justified in my opinion with full disclosure, and it is not to be used to generate art (I promise I will not do this on this website).

You will notice that a lot of parts of the code are now marked as legacy content. Because I think CGEF has become a source of nostalgia and has historical value, I decided to bring back all the old content, but with a banner stating that it will no longer be updated. If anyone still needs those Nokia 3210 ringtones or Winamp skins from 20 years ago, yeah, they are still there!

Now enjoy the almost fully restored version of Can't Get Enough Futurama!
