Lots of good advertising, a consistent and appropriate time slot, and being able to catch the entire series (in order) in a few weeks are such obvious ways to make it a success - too bad it took moving to CN to do this! But... as a show Futurama is an acquired taste for many, and it has a very definite audience. This, and the quick release on DVD (at least on Region 2), is the best possible outcome now that the show is all but dead.
